dead screen-how roll back to std TMobile ROM? - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

Have been using the XDA dev ROM and love the new features, but somehow my lcd has cracked and I need to send my XDA back to TMobile - (should be still under warranty).
What is the best way to change back to std TMobile ROM since I cannot see the screen and must do everything while sync'd in order to see the screen? (I can access the SD card just fine)....
Or, is it worth scrambling the system prior to sending it in? If so, how....
It's obvious the problem is not related to the software/ROM upgrade - it's a defective/damaged screen --- so I don't want to be hit with an additional charge if possible.
TIA.

I wouldn't worry about it, they normally flash the ROM to the latest version before sending it back anyway, therefore it won't matter which ROM you are using.

Rom Dump How To

Can anyone advise as to how I can do a ROM dump? I've not activated my new phone yet because I'm searching and waiting for instructions on this. I DONT CARE IF THE PHONE GETS BRICKED; i'm returning it to USCC since they sent me a new one.
Check out this invisible rom dumper posted by buzz_lightyear. I advise you to read the entire post before you go out and start getting dump happy all over town.

if you returned a bricked phone, or a phone with a custom rom and not an "official" rom image, they will charge you full price sinc eit invalidates your warranty. If you havent returned it, I would make sure you relocak it and put it back to its original state before returning it. I sent one back like that a year ago, and got a surprise $250 additional charge on my bill. I called them up to complain...they even know what verison of DCDs ROM I had upgraded to, so that means they turn them on and check them.

Flash back to stock before calling tech support?

Hey everyone, I like a lot of others have been getting a lot of dropped calls and my gps takes forever to lock on so I'm looking to get my fascinate replaced, hopefully with another phone. However, I'm currently running the newest version of MIUI right now so my question is, do I need to flash back to stock before I make the call? I'm wondering because I know they make you do all sorts of stuff with your phone like updating and whatnot and I'm not sure how my phone is going to react or what's going to show up to the techs I'm speaking with.
If so, what do I need to flash back to? Did they release a new update? Could someone maybe link something that can show me how to get it back to stock?
Last question and kind of a big one is that the phone is physically damaged... However, It's been that way for over a year and the problems have only come up recently. Do I have a shot?
A little bit of reseach goes along way...this topic has been beat to death. You don't need to flash back to stock until the phone is to be sent in! The official verizon Ed05 is the latest build and is in the development section.
Good Day
I went to stock ed05 and was put through a factory reset, software update check, and she even had me go through dial codes to change things which I'm not sure would work while on MIUI. Worst case scenario, make a nandroid of MIUI and flash back after the call. Just make sure to flash a mtd rom prior to restoring

Anything for the cracked screen problem? Like I said earlier the screen has been cracked for a VERY long time and the problems just emerged with the Ed04 update.
You don't have to flash until you send it back but personally, I would before I called. Only because they are going to ask you to try a few things and will probably ask what build you were on. Who knows, going stock may solve your call issues.
Don't know what to say about the broken screen. That's not covered under warranty but missed calls would be. Maybe you could stop by a store and ask them rather than having a tech note your account.

[Q] Samsung Repair Ethics Question

My Galaxy Note (Bell) has a loose micro USB port. It can charge from the wall and is recognized by my pc however I need to prop it up on a slant in order for it to maintain pressure on the cable input, otherwise it will disconnect. It was caused by my dog knocking it off an end table while charging. It's a pain and Samsung has sent me a UPS slip to send it away.
The phone is rooted and this is my first experience with an Android. I've had a good time loading Da_G's kernel, figuring out adb, cwm, dagr8's Saurom and all the rest. However its time to send it back and I really don't know what Samsungs procedures are for a rooted phone. I've loaded the Bell kernel back to the phone but it's not the 100% solution I was looking for so I got frustrated and just went back to where I was already at with Saurom rc4 loaded up and titanium backup now doing it's thing.
Anyone with previous experiences send back a rooted phone for a hardware issue and know their policies?
Is there a step after flashing the bell kernel tar I'm missing?
Thanks

I had to send my Captivate to Samsung for repair. it was rooted and they fixed it without any issues.
Most manufacturers will fix hardware issues clearly not caused by rooting. Of course, no promises.
That's the reassurance I needed. I'll get on with it and send it away tomorrow. I'll report back in a very long 2 weeks...

Best luck.... if you were in America you could just take it to an att store. Just be on a stockish rom and turn it in and they would not notice lol, get another device that day. Idk how things go up in Canada though.
Dont Do It!!!!
I dont know WHY there are people here sending the OP off....EVERYONE KNOWS that if you root it voids your warranty...it doesnt say "It voids your warranty except for hardware issues"
Why set yourself up to be disappointed when you can just revert it back to stock and not worry at all.....people always trying to catch a fool slipping....question is who will be the fool in this scenario????

Well he should revert back to stock for sure but you can't roll back the counter. But as long as your stock they may not look at the counter and just fix the phone. It's been said before, there's no known case of Samsung voiding a warranty because of it.
Dont know how they do it up there but down here on AT&T we have a 30 day return/exchange policy I exercised yesterday in fact, plus a year warranty giving us refurbished phones if anything happens. I know you guys got it a little before us but I would check into this. Go back to stock there's a thread on how to do this in our development section and take it into your local providers store see what happens maybe you'll get lucky and they'll replace it on the spot. Say it was a hardware defect though.

Because in everyone's experience they'll generally fix hardware problems even if you're rooted. Of course they have to, but they tend to. We all said there were no guarantees.

It seems like one does not simply revert back to stock. Admittedly I'm new to this but all I can find in the development forum is the Bell kernel. The full bell system doesn't seem to be up, just the At&T. After a factory reset and old kernal I still have super user loaded and all of the bell bloatware gone. I'm sure with some due diligence I could have made a back up right after my original root but I didn't. Frustrated with the mess I created I just set the phone back up with Saurom the way I liked it.

It's only 14 days here. I've had it since launch on Feb 14th. Bell is synonymous for passing the buck off, contact them online and they tell you to call in, call them and they tell you go into a store, go to a store and they'll tell you to go to the original store of purchase or another another store with a repair tech on duty. Going directly through Samsung has been smooth thus far, I just hope if they have an issue they'll contact me before blowing whistles and charging my bill some erroneous fees.

restoring it to stock fabric way

so i finally got my prime back on track beacuse of the boot loop CWM 5.2.0.4 if not mistaking but for some reason is still flicking youtube n some other stuff and i restore it with jermaine 9.4.2.15.zip (STOCK ROM UPDATED)..is there a way i can take CWM out and the rest of the things back like normal i am planning to send it back to ASUS to see what they are going to say or eather a new one or fix it ? any help or advice here thnx
At this point in time there is NO way to relock bootloader.
they will know and it will considered outside its warranty regardless of whether something you did (software wise) caused the problem (ie even if it is caused by faulty hardware, main reason im still using stock just rooted).

[Q] Cracked galaxy s4 need advice on replacement/ repair

Hey guys, My name is Clint Painter and am I long time reader on the forum, so I dropped my Verizon Galaxy s4 the other day and it cracked the screen pretty good. The digitizer is still intact as the phone can still be used and responds. I have seen online that you can buy replacement glass, but am wary because theyre not samsung parts so I dont want to lose quality. I have also read reviews on them and many people complain about fitment or quality. Theres a kiosk in the mall that fixes phone screens but when they do it they replace the digitizer and display with it. When I was looking at parts online they come with the glass, digitizer, and lcd screen; my question is, the galaxy has an OLED screen not an lcd so would I be losing quality by having the guy at the mall fix it with replacement parts from amazon/ebay or wherever he gets his parts being the online descriptions say lcd rather than OLED. My last option would be to replace the phone entirely by buying a brand new one (no insurance) but my worry with that is my current phone is still on the original ME7 build number which is currently rooted and has Hyperdrive rom. If I buy a new phone would I be able to root it on the current build version and restore all of my custom rom, apps, data, and TWRP recovery or would I be stuck with the stock rom.
Basically, heres my options:
Replace just the glass myself and risk the glass quality and fitment issue - $15
Have the mall guy replace the glass, digitizer, and LCD with the risk of the LCD not being the OEM OLED quality screen - $300
Buy a new Galaxy s4 from verizon and risk being able to get all of my root/recovery/rom/data onto the new phone. - $700
What do you guys think help me out here!!

I just went through the same. Firstly, the original ROM is MDK (this is both rootable and has an unlockable bootloader), I was on this before I sent my device to Samsung for repair. If you send it to Samsung they will 100% flash ME7 or possibly the newer MI1 on your phone, I left them a phone message + note asking them not to but still they flashed it. Both are heavily locked down bootloaders, and the MI1 also uses the KNOX trip flags. So yeah, basically I'm never buying a Samsung phone again
On the plus side, Samsung's full repair that returned my device to pretty much brand new condition costs only $200, this is a flat price and has 2 day free shipping both ways (go on their support site and look for service request to do that). It replaces the entire display assembly, which includes the thin shiny chrome trim around the bezel, mine was heavily chipped so that was nice. Definitely don't try to replace it yourself, there is a special adhesive that lies between the glass and the LCD, which is very difficult to replace and if you mess it up you end up with air bubbles, bad touch detection and other issues.
Definitely don't buy a new one because the Samsung repair is far cheaper. BUT, you can easily get a used one off http://swappa.com/buy/samsung-galaxy-s-4-verizon for $400-450, and have the guarantee that it will be rooted (people list their bootloader state on there so be sure to check). They verify the IMEI / ESN numbers with verizon so the phone is guaranteed to work after you just put your current S4's SIM card in. Usually the device condition on most of these is extremely good.
Good luck, hope this helps
So basically what you're saying is that if I send it off to be fixed or if I buy a new one that the firmware, loaded on either the repaired phone or brand new one, I wont be able to put a custom recovery on it to get all my rom and apps back? So in otherwords dont send it off for repair or buy a new one unless I want to lose all of my custom stuff? Do you know anything about having it repaired locally, whether I DIY the glass or take it to the mall for digitizer, glass, and lcd replacement? I don't mind having the mall do it for 300 I just worry that being the description says LCD instead of OLED that the graphics and other quality will be less than the current one in my phone. I want the screen fixed, but I dont want to lose my custom rom or lose quality in the replacement components.
Thank you for your help!
Is there any way to downgrade MI1 down to ME7? If I make a backup on TWRP and with Titanium is there any way to put it all back on the phone if it is on MI1?

I would definitely stay away from local repairs, especially at $300 for possibly non OEM parts, would be better to just buy a used device for $400 thats got OEM parts.
ME7 and newer ROMs still allow root + safestrap, this allows you to use a few compatible ROMs, mostly all touchwiz based like hyperdrive. Read about safestrap here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441 . You will not be able to flash a kernel or custom recovery on ME7/MI1, meaning no AOSP ROMs like cyanogenmod. If you are ok staying with ME7 (check what you have in settings > about phone -- http://i.imgur.com/sRwvjjM.jpg), then $200 samsung official repair would probably be the cheapest option for you.

Options, IMO:
(1) Official repair + sell the device they return you + buy a MDK off Swappa
(2) Find a repair shop to just swap the glass (make sure they use LOCA to secure the replacement)
I just went and looked under about phone and the build number ends in ME7 but the Baseband version ends in MDK so im not sure why theyre different. I got the phone right when the 32gb version came out and rooted it with custom recovery; I have TWRP and Hyperdrive rom on the phone. I like the touchwiz based roms and wont need to go to an AOSP based rom. I am happy with hyperdrive and will probably stick with this rom. If I was to send it to samsung for repair, being it already has ME7 on it now wouldnt that mean I would be able to re-root it and put TWRP back on it as long as they dont update it to MI1? I guess I am a little confused with your previous post when you said on ME7 you can only use safestrap and touchwiz based roms being I have ME7 and TWRP?
If samsung was leave it at ME7 but without the root and custom recovery, would I be able to just reroot it and put TWRP on it and use the backup to restore all of my stuff or would it not be do-able?
My local repair guy can just replace te glass for 50 bucks

You flashed a ME7-based ROM but are still on the (moddable) MDK recovery. Once you get/end up with a true ME7/MI1 model (bootloader and all) you can't ever revert or flash true custom recovery.

Oh I see, makes sense! So if I send it off anywhere to have it fixed it will for sure come back updated to a newer version and I wont be able to get TWRP on it? What about that bootstrap thing in the above post, what would be the cons to going that route. If they give me an updated version ME7/MI1, could I put bootstrap on it and then restore my backup from TWRP to get all of my stuff back or would it not work since the backup was made on MDK rather than the newer version?
If I cant do that then what are my options?
1.) send off for repair and be stuck with out a custom recovery and without my custom rom and mods.
2.) try repairing the glass myself
3.) have the mall guy replace the glass, digitizer, and LCD but risk the quality of the parts not being the same as Samsung
4.) fix it and sell it then buy a used one with the correct MDK recovery. (this route just seems like alot of trouble, having to fix it, sell it, buy a new one, re-set everything back up)
I just want an option that lets me have my rom the way it is now with all of my mods and such and have a fixed screen that does not sacrifice image quality. I just worry that being the product description says LCD rather than OLED that the quality of the graphics and stuff will be less than it is now which is unacceptable. Is the new MI1 ever going to be able to have a custom recovery and is just a matter of time or is from this point on they will never be able to have a custom recovery?
Is there any other online services that will replace just the glass and not the digitizer or screen. Or if they have to replace that stuff with it, at least use 100% OEM Samsung parts? I don't mind having it repaired I just want it to be still the same quality of parts as when Samsung build it and to keep the firmware the same.
I went up to the mall a little bit ago and talked to the kiosk guy that fixes them. He says that the parts they use are oem and that the quality will be the same. He says it just says lcd screen on the descriptions online but that the parts are oem. Would you guys think it's safe to use him to fix my phone screen or are you guys wary on this too?
But he won't do just the glass he insists the proper way to do it is to replace the whole assembly and that's all.

Find another local guy.
Seriously, just check Craigslist in your area... the repair guys love posting to the cell phone FS section.
And yes, the OEM digitizer/screen/glass *is* a pretty straightforward fix... But it's expensive.
I checked with craigslist and the only one on craigslist is advertizing for the place in the mall I referred to. I also found a website that does them called Missionrepair.com and they seem to be a good company after looking at their website and using the live chat feature. Theyre located in Kansas and say they usually get them fixed in one day after receiving them. They have a store there that accepts walk-ins but they also take online orders like what I am looking at doing. They plan to charge about 200-250 including shipping and seem to be more trustworthy them my local mall guy. They said they use 100% original OEM parts and have a lifetime guarantee. If you break your screen again they fix it again for free you only have to pay a service fee. Seems like a good deal, anyone have any experience with them?
