[Q] Error during nandroid backup - HTC EVO 3D

I rooted my phone after the OTA update for ICS. Now I'm S-off, Unlocked, Android 4.0.3 and Clockwork Mod 5.0.2.0. So I want to get down this flashing Roms road and the first step is to backup my current Rom.
I'm using Rom Manager for this but I never get the "backup complete line" at the end. The phone reboots every time I try. There's a backup file ate the end buy I don't know if it's safe. Basically friends, I want to know if it's normal. I

I suggest using 4ext recovery. Here's a pg86img of 4ext for you. Just rename it to PG86IMG.zip and flash it through the bootloader. There's an app for it so that you can do it from the android system like Rom manager.
http://db.tt/iL588Uib
Edit.. it'll also restore backups made with cwm

Don't use Rom Manager, just make backups and flash roms in the recovery.

Is there a way to save EVERYTHING? I've done app backup and data backups, but there's always missing info. Last time all data from apps like whatsap and the progress in games was lost. A nandroid backup image isn't the best way?
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk 2

A nandroid backup will back up everything unless you do an advanced backup and choose not to backup something.
When you restore a nandroid backup it should be in the exact state as when you made the backup. Texts, call log, app data, etc.

Nice. What's the best Rom you've tried and why?

Well, it seems like you're used to stock. I woulent go trying jb if I were you.
I'll suggest ZR3DX, its just as stable as any other ice Rom but its heavily themed. I've been using it for months. I also like sense 4.0 so I use ViperRom by virus. If you want stability+eye candy go with ZR3DX. If you want eye candy+cutting edge, go to infectedrom.com and check out venom/ViperRom.

Thx for the info. Going to try those. Just two more things. What makes Virus cutting edge? Jb is for Jelly bean? Is it unstable on EVO3D?

Sense 4.0+ more tweaks than you can shake a stick at make virus' venom Rom cutting edge. It's got issues though. I can't download from the native browser, sometimes get random reboots, can't get roaming data, and no 4g. Plus you'll have to have hboot 1.58 for venom.
Yes jb is jelly bean and its not very stable yet.

Comments withdrawn

I have hboot 1.58. I don't need roaming or 4G. I might try the venom. Right now I'm on ZR3DX, so far no issues but; when I restored my data partition all the themes where deleted, couldn't try them. I'm really interested in themes and launchers for those Roms, wanna make my own themes later on

Yeah I'd advise against restoring data from one Rom to another. Having to manually sign in and re-customize each time we flash a new Rom is a small price to pay for a flashaholic.
Use titanium backup to restore data on non system apps only. Use sms backup/restore for texts.
As far as launchers... The only Rom I'd use a 3rd party launcher on is miui. I love sense too much to mask it.
As far as themes... Can't help you there. I can make splash screens but I've never tried themes.

Why the hell didn't I try to restore my Nandroid backup done in Bootstrap ? I thought, "nah, I'm wasting my time, it's 2 different recoveries". Glad to see I was wrong. It's a long winded process but since nobody offers further P-Roms or any 2nd-init one, our only option for a while.
Cool beans.
Step 4 is what I missed, good thinking there Loki!

The reason I put bootstrap in step 4 was so you didn't have to install it later and to also provide a fall back on a fresh restore.
So how you liking the MoPho? I know I made a few people mad in the Evo community when I switched but consider what the MoPho can do out of the box was there any doubt where I'd end up?

I based it off of the unroot/root testing method I used when I was testing and providing analysis for teamwin and orrbemas on the Evo. I was hoping the original exploit I used for the Evo would work for Juggs' unlock but it didn't. I know it's not pretty and will most likely require that you repeat it for every custom ROM install but it will do for now.
Awesome, now I can get my 4g back to tether the iPad.
I registered just to say thanks! You guys do amazing work around here, been reading for a long time. This worked perfectly!

The short version is:
root
unlock bootloader
install recovery
install custom ROM
backup custom ROM
lock bootloader
root
restore custom ROM
enjoy 4G
Until there is a fix for unlocked 4g this is the only way to use run custom ROMs and still retain 4G. Every time you want to flash a ROM via recovery you need to repeat the steps.
Nice! I'll test this myself after work and add to the guide! Good job man!!

I don't get Motorola devices. Why do we have to run bootstrap instead of just going into the custom recovery and backing up the rom there?

Bootstrap isn't needed til after the relock and root so you have a rooted stock backup and the ability to restore the custom ROM.

After step 5 CWM is no longer on the phone so you can't backup/restore using CWM only bootstrap. Also, restoring the custom ROM through bootstrap on a rooted but LOCKED phone is the only way to retain 4G at this moment.

What do i even do with s-off?

I have s-off, what can i do now. Was it only to get the *locked* back?
One big deal for a lot of people is that you will be able to make and restore nandroid backups without having to seperately go into hboot and flash the kernel (boot.img) for what you're restoring.
Also people want to be able to download and flash roms in a single file and installation process. Once devs begin packaging them for s off, you won't do the old two file method of rom in recovery followed by PH98IMG.zip in hboot.
Everything will be included in recovery.
And to me the big deal is that you can flash the latest ice cream sandwich radio firmware by flashing the RUU, and whenever you want you can how back to the gingerbread radio firmware and gingerbread roms. As opposed go how its always been where once you upgraded there was no going back for radio firmware.
Also people will tell you that's the reason that we don't have a lot more developers on our device is because of s off. I personally think that's wishful thinking, and the user base is a reason a lot of devs walked away, but I'm passing along the information since its posted constantly that once s off is achieved there will be a line of devs a half mile long begging to get to the rezound.

Quick question, Charlie. I came from the Dinc and am used to backup/restore including the kernels. If I were to do a backup right now(already did), after being s-off, will it include the kernel? Or, does something in the process need to be modified before the kernel is included in the backup? I have a feeling it will be included right off the bat, but just curious.
You can flash one of the awesome splash screens in my thread in the theme section

Backups done by amon ra included the kernel you just couldn't restore it without con's nandroid helper. So when you go to backup and it lets you select what to backup, make sure boot has an x next to it.

Does S-Off mean we have a better chance of getting RIL working on AOSP possibly? I think I kept reading that AOSP wasn't ever going to be possibly until we got S-Off.
Also how the hell did we get S-Off? Did HTC release it, or did someone find a bootleg way to get S-Off with their own research? I was on XDA like a day or two ago before S-Off was ever mentioned then all the sudden we have it.

Some guys advocate that AOSP devs will flock back to the rezound if we have s off.
We got s off because some developers from a completely different device put in a crapload of time and effort in order to figure out the exploit and then test it on our devices.

This is my main reason. My Rezound loves the radios and Incredikernel. So I did a mixture of the 3, s-0ff, ics firmware, & Ineffabilis. Also just re-packed a GB rom that included kernel boot.img flashing and it worked BEAUTIFULLY. No PH98IMG flashing done at all.
Also, can always go back to Rezrom Ex 3.4 via nandroid without issue.
Does anyone know if we will be able to get the mount points changed for sdcard and sdcard2? I know recovery reads the actual sdcard, but for apps backing up data, it all goes to the internal "sdcard". More than once have I gotten in a rush and forgot to backup my internal sdcard. just hoping we can get that changed around.
Someone should know this
Is there anything to gain with supercid on this device?

This process is DEAD SIMPLE ... Just time consuming if you can't get the "wire Trick" timing down.
All devices are different. All I can suggest is READ ... READ ... READ
Since you don't really even know what you want to do ... S-Off can wait. Then maybe a different s-off process may be available when you DO need it. I doubt it will be "easier" though.

ICS for Rezound... Flash working?

I'm rooted...
S-Off... (soon, anyway)
Now I'm looking for an ICS ROM. However, I think I heard rumors that ICS doesn't play very well with Flash... Is this true? If so, I'm not sure I want ICS... I use Flash a lot.
The other thing is... I have no idea how to even begin choosing an ICS ROM. I do want Sense because I like HTC's weather widgets and lock screen. But I really have no idea how to even know what ROM would give me what I want... Let alone try to compare different ROMs... yikes. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Sorry, I feel sort of lost with a lot of this stuff.
Next thing I will need is how to install the new ROM, now that I'm rooted and have S-Off. Haven't found simple instructions on specifically that, yet. But right now, I'm mainly thinking about the first two questions.

Flash is fine. As for the roms if you want sense I personally love viperrez its very smooth for a sense rom. The installation is easy. Even easier if your s off, as with most roms, just download it, full wipe, and flash it in recovery.
If you want to try out different roms just make a nandroid backup of each ROM after it boots that way you can switch simply by restoring the backup files

In addition to just rooting the phone, you need to unlock the bootloader, flash a different recovery and then flash a ROM that uses 4.2.2. I prefer ARHD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2183023
This ROM gives you 4.2.2 with full sense 5.0 experience without all the bloatware that your carrier most likely installed on your phone. :good:
