[Q] Whats the best mod/theme/solution for me? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all! now i understand that threads debating the 'Best' ROM, theme, app, mod or setting arent something XDA is fond of, but thats not the particular reason I'm here, I've looked through countless threads in the mod/theme section and I'm wondering if someone can help me find the best solution for me. I'm relatively technically minded and a half-decent IT worker but I will openly admit when it comes to development/flashing, I'm one to follow instructions to the letter to get what I need up and working, but never learn the deeper workings.
I've an unbranded i9300 which I've had flashed with CM 10/10.1 and have kept updating with nightlies, but now I seek to branch out and find a ROM that will allow me the super-stability, additional working features (Allshare Cast [in particular], NFC, multi-view) of the stock Samsung image. I've since flashed philz custom touch recovery, and then proceeded to flash Sotmax Jelly Bean Ultimate Stock V10 available here. Its provided all the features I want, working, a good kernel and some customizability but the cartoony, colourful Samsung visuals are the reason I flashed from stock in the first place.
Can anyone help me find anything I can add to my device to get me a stock 4.1.2 lock screen, dropdown/notifications, launcher and settings? Essentially as much of the UI from CM10.1 as possible. I flashed Domination 1.4.3 as it looked and seemed perfect - but didn't change the lockscreen, and i started noticing lots of lag when scrolling/opening apps instantly. Is it thoroughly incompatible with the ROM im looking to use, or have i done something wrong along the way?
If this is a noob thread i do apologize but these forums can be so cluttered and misorganized to someone unused to searching through them that it can be hard to find something - if you dont know exactly what it is you need.

So you want some features from Samsung stock rom (camera, NFC, default framework and drivers), but the look of original 4.1.2 (CM10)?
I want this too!

Use any Sammy rom and use holo locker and holo launcher HD from play store for the vanilla android look

Thank you, i'll be checking those two out!
Ive since found the Null ROM here and it also seems to be exactly what we want/need from scratch, a mix of 4.1.2, Samsung Features, and a CM/AOKP look and feel. Still missing that lock screen though. Holo locker is the look that i desire - but it seems to lag when switching on, the normal homescreen displays for up to a second before it reverts to the lock. odd..

I use UltimaRom for same reason.
I wanted to use some of samsung apps but with look and feel of CM10.
And UltimaRom provides that. It also let me choose which samsung I want to keep and which I want to get rid of to keep my phone faster.

Ultima looks excellent! Thanks for the recommendation, nice boot loaders too and excellent file/mod support on his site

take a look at the null rom. Perfect for all your needs.

[Q] Quick questions re stock ROM

New owner of an SG2, which I'm liking so far. Am coming from N1 Cyanogenmod.
At present I've rooted my phone and am running the stock rom with Launcher Pro.
I'm liking a bunch of the features of the stock rom (well trying them out) and am deciding whether I keep the stock rom or move to a custom rom.
I do have a few questions about the stock rom, which I wonder can be answered here:
- With the pull down menu you have the options of wifi, bluetooth etc in the status bar. Is there anyway of changing these options (for example want to remove bluetooth).
- With the dialler, once I make a call it goes into a screen with a bunch of options, like, save contact, etc. Is there anyway of avoiding this screen and going straight to home? (incidentally you are given the option of "voice call". Is this something provided by your network or another service?)
- Autorotate. Is it possible to NOT have it working on the homescreen, but available in your apps?
In relation to custom rom, what do you guys reckon is as close to stock as possible, but with a bit more customisation. I'm guessing a custom rom would be able to deal with most of my queries.
1) majority of roms have that bar modified where you can slide it across and have upto 12 triggers, although you can't really remove them. However with cm7 and miui you can customize that bar to your hearts content.
2) no idea
3) look in the launcher pro settings, you should be able to set it there so it doesn't auto rotate
Give cm7 a try.

Cheers mate. Was using CM7 fine with my N1, guess just wanted to mix it up a bit. There are a bunch of features I do like about the stock rom though.
I'll run it for another week and then may give MIUI a go.
Checkout jkay mods and themes for stock roms in the theme section.
Can do basically what you want Plus more.
Also many launchers (home screens) can set whether to auto rotate. Set it to off in launcher and leave the system auto rotate on.

Thanks, will have a play with the custom themes.
Also, I presume, if I install MIUI or Cyanogenmod, I could still install the Samsung specific apks?

No, you can not install any Samsung apps on CM. (May be you're thinking you like the stock browser so you want to use it on CM, but you can not).

Cheers mate. I note you are using GingerMod, may give that a try as it seems to be the AOSP, with the ability to add certain TW apps.

Yes. CM7 and MIUI are build from scratch and doesn't contain anything related to Samsung. So unlike stcok based custom roms, these two roms doesn't support Samsung apps.

Well, the reason you wanted to try is exactly the reason why so many users love GingerMod rom. It has some good apps from Samsung, like the gpu accelerated browser, camera app, fm radio. Rest 95 % is aosp.
So it's pure google experience,no Samsung bloatware, and we can still enjoy some of the real good apps Samsung made.

heh, would love a cyan-samsung bastard child port. If only I had the skills to do that.
Love the ability with Cyan to tweak a whole bunch of settings, but am liking quite a few of the Samsung apps.
Will look into GingerMod as it may be a good compromise.

There is one more reason why i personally like GingerMod.
It is 99% (or 100%) bug free. Infact, i find it more stable than any official firmware.

Which ROM will make me feel fuzzy inside?

Hey guys,
I'm still trying to get my SGS2 figured out... I've got it set up with GoLauncher and GoLocker and I love the look and setup etc but I would love to know what ROM people suggest.. I've read all the guides on how to flash custom ROMs, what apps can be frozen etc etc. but I don't know which ROM to go with because I'm not sure if they will change the look and feel of the phone.. This is what I want the ROM to do:
- I want to keep the current look and setout of apps/home screen etc
- Something quick and easy on the battery
- To be able to get rid of all the apps I don't use
I only really use SMS, Phone, Email, Camera, Facebook and Shazam. Nothing complicated really
Thanks in advance for your suggestions! Any advice is appreciated.
Oh boy, it's going to be fun on these forums today.
I use MIUI, it's based on CyanogenMod so there is no bloatware, very customizable, very fast and very efficient battery usage with the Android OS battery bug fixed.
Or use CyanogenMod 7 and use your same configuration of GoLauncher and stuff.
CriskeloROM is if you want to have a very customizable Samsung based ROM.
Rooted stock. Yes, I'm serious.

I definitely won't be going for CriskeloROM then
So will MIUI change the whole look of my phone or can I keep my current look? And what's the difference between it and CyanogenMod 7?
Sorry if the questions sound basic to you guys!
Cheers
CriskeloROM is like stock Samsung ROM with extra added features like CRT on, off, ICS animations, etc...if you want Samsung stuff, and your current UI looks, go with CriskeloROM, I used to use it until I switched to MIUI.
MIUI is different from CyanogenMod, because it has a different look and feel with all MIUI's thousand's of themes and you can make your phone so customized with different boot animations, lock screen layouts, etc.
CyanogenMod is stock Android, with nothing on it and you can put any look on it. MIUI has it's own launcher which is part of the entire theming architecture it comes with, which integrates every aspect of the UI with the launcher, lock screen, and other MIUI apps so that one app controls all.
OK I checked out the MIUI website and I don't really want to change the look so I'll rule that out.
Which is fastest out of CyanogenMod and CriskeloROM? I don't care about Samsung apps (assuming phone + sms etc aren't included? I'm guessing you mean the social hub, music hub etc etc, right?)
Try out CyanogenMod out then, its fastest and speediest because it has absolutely no bloatware. Try it out, there's no harm trying

Try checkrom. Its stock based but has an kitchen app with everything you need to customize the rom the way you want..All bloatware are removed and the kitchen is a must....Or try Hyperdroid...Another good rom and the team are great and they give great support...Those are the two roms that i would suggest
I use checkrom and nothing else.
But for you I would suggest you just root your phone with cf root, install titanium backup and use it to freeze or delete the apps you don't want.

I would suggest going through android development threads and looking at the features, screenshots and videos and compare, then root, make a nand backup and flash as many roms as you like until you find the one you want to stay with

Insanity II, it's based on CM7 and it only has the basic features. Superfast and looks like stock Android. Have fun.

Thanks heaps, I just used cf-root and then froze heaps of unused apps with Titanium Backup Pro, and I have saved a lot of RAM in doing so! I read somewhere there is a battery fix you can apply when you've rooted your phone but can't find it now.. Does anyone know what it's called?
And are there any other essentials to install now that I've got the phone rooted? Maybe the SetCPU program? I'm guessing that would save a lot of battery without sacrificing performance too much, right??
Cheers!
Just flash any Samsung based ROM (I like Androidema), flash Chainfire's Kernel for simplicity and you're set.

[Q] Theming On Galaxy SII

Well, I've looked around a lot and I can't find much clear instructions so I figure this post won't be only beneficial to me. I've rooted my GS2 and flashed a few roms and stuff, but I can never get some of the UI elements to my liking. There's always one or two things that's missing from one ROM, that's there in another, but that one misses something from the previous. Anyway, I'd really appreciate some help in learning to theme my GSII. I just got rid of CM7 #116 and went to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1168836&page=942
CriskeloRom V38. It's pretty nice but I'd like to change some of the icons and stuff. Firstly I'd like to change the battery icon, the wifi and edge icon, and maybe the icons in the notification bar. Also what I'd REALLY love is to figure out how to add my own animations or transitions and stuff. I've always been jealous of how smooth iPhones seem to be because of the transitions they have. And the overscroll bounce has been disabled, I'd also like to add that back. I think some of these things can be done thru JKay mod, but I'm not sure how and I don't wanna go around flashing stuff that I'm clueless about. All helps is appreciated, thanks a lot guys Oh and forgot to mention, I'd also like to know how to increase the number of apps shown in the recent apps
Read a lot, or get an iphone

you can enable the overscroll bounce with jkay deluxe settings. you can disable it if you want. regarding animations or transitions again you need to find a rom that supports them..look around in the threads and you will find roms that have them.heck themes now add them so if you want to flash a rom and then flash ics theme you are guaranteed to have what you are after...so here is what i would do in your situation:
either get go launcher from market. It gives so you so many options regarding animations or transitions between homescreens and app screens. that is what i am currently using. then no need to flash a rom since the launcher gives you all that
second. go into jkay thread and read on how the settings work and read the changelog
third find a rom and then a theme to suit your needs
Its the Devs and Themers that have that information but they tend not to read the Q&A or General section .
General section of XDA.com may have more info .

Thanks for the reply i tried enabling it but the option is there, and also there aren't any of the overscroll bounce packages available for XXKL1 as far as I've read.. I'm using a rom with an ICS theme and a few transitions right now but I thought it'd be cool to customise them how i like. I'll need to read a bit more about JKay though. I like Widget Locker but last time I tried it, I got bad battery drain. Think I'll give it a go again and see though.

[Q] JellyBean look with all samsung s3 function?

Hello guys,
I am looking for Jelly Bean ROM ( I mean JB look, i don`t like samsung overlay on android) but with all special functions of Samsung Galaxy s 3 such as S Voice, Smart Stay and touch options( zooming with two fingers on picture in gallery etc.) I spent whole day on searching but didn`t find any maybe looking in wrong place? or just doesn`t exist?
Also i would like to add that it isn`t my very beginig on flashing roms. Previously I had HTC Desire HD with plenty roms tried.
Please help

And does the "pan to move icons" works? I have already found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886332 MS Team HD 5.0 and it doesn`y support it but just it so it`s very acceptable. Another thing, but propably in every rom, lack of S Planner widget.
Would totally love this combination as well. Mainly so I can keep WiFi tethering which Vanilla JB ROMs don't have.
Nice to hear that I`m not alone
S Planner and other samsung applicatins might be in the rom, depending if the author put it in or not. I can not give you that specific advice because I am using cm10. So you gotta check some roms out and see whats in there.
You also have the option to flash deodexed stock rom and then vertumus theme, so you got the complete Samsung stuff. Here you get the rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1704185
Oh and perhaps also check this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1911572 Has the JB look out of the box
http://galaxys3.roms-db.com/ also very neat when trying to find a suiting rom!

[Q] Custom 4.3 JB with Touchwiz for i9100

Hi guys,
As the title says, I'm looking for some custom Jelly Bean 4.3 Roms based on official Samsung Rom for my i9100, so it would have Touchwiz also.
Currently i keep switching between CM10.2 (4.3.1) and Wanamlite 14.7 (4.1.2).
I like Wanamlite just because it uses the Samsung Touchwiz interface i like so much. Other than that, any other stock Rom, rooted and debloated would do just about the same.
What i like about CM10.2 and cyanogenmod in general is the speed and stability the Rom feels like. Also, the latest 4.3 Roms gave me infinitely great battery lives compared to any other JB Rom i tried since. And judging from other posts and reviews on the internet, Google worked their magic on 4.3 to help small batteries run through the day (almost double the life of 4.1.2 or even worst 4.2.x).
So it seems the perfect combo for me would be a 4.3 custom with TW.
Is there such a Rom, because it seems i can't find it.
Thanks.
There is no such thing. TouchWiz is more than a launcher. It`s a full system framework integrated in pretty much everything. For example, TW ads the speed dial and video call in phone app, the swipe to quick call or message in contacts app, SNS integration, FM Radio. And of course all the other "smart" features, like smart display.
If however, you don't need any of the features mentioned above, you can find custom launchers with skins that look exactly like TW and use them on any custom rom.
Thank you for your reply.
I realize i can install some Launcher apps to get some of the TW "feel", as i already tried Apex and Nova launchers. But they don't come even close to the real TW experience. As you said, TW is more than an icon set or interface color set. It's also about built-in apps and features. I know nothing about coding and programming on Android, so i thought one could implement TW along all those apps into some custom ROM like CM10.2 (4.3).
So, i guess i was wrong.
If so, this thread can be closed.
Thank you.
