[Q] Brickbug? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello! I read about brickbug but theres something that its not clear to me.
I used "emmc check" and it says that my chip is sane. But, the insane chip comes from with the phone, or it can appear with time?
Actually I have Android 4.0.3 and I want to update to 4.0.4, I can update without worries? Because I scared about bricking my phone. Too much threads says that 4.0.4 will brick your phone.
So, the question is, Can I update securely with odin?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
If it says "sane", then it would be very much fine. And, this brickbug effects only ICS 4.0.4 version only.
So, it would be very much better to stay away from it.
If you still want to flash this 4.0.4, then better to flash a "SAFE" kernel like siyah or dorimanx, then you can go ahead with flashing what ever ROM you are interested in.
Regards,
Hereticnine.

If you are not going to root your phone and install custom roms, I suggest you to update your phone to 4.0.4 using samsung kies. It will not brick your phone by any means. But after updating to 4.0.4 do not wipe or factory reset using stock recovery.

1. the Brick bug comes with Stock ICS 4.0.4 kernel, and if you flash 4.0.4 firmware, then you will have a "brick bug" kernel, but this doesn't mean your device is bricked. I believe you already know what can brick your device already
2. Your flash counter will never change
3. It's better to stay away from hardbrick rather than preparing to solve it. If you read the guides/ instructions and can ask good questions as you are doing right now, then you shouldn't hardbrick your device.

Thank you very much so I will stay away from this update until Jelly bean one comes out or a better firmware for 4.0.4.. as I am interested only in stock kernels and rom..

If you are interested in stock kernels then stay away from CWM recovery, very simple.
Why? because, the stock kernel of Jellybean update will most likely come with the bug.

So the only way for me to update and be sure of no brick is, either use Siyah kernel after 4.0.4 I9100XWLPX flash or flash 4.0.4 and hope there is no need for CWM (as I understand CWM is needed in case the flash gets stuck?), or flash and don't care until february 2013 when my warranty expires..
Sorry if these Q's. are a bit noobie

there is another way like in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1619525
but is not the best way.
I was waiting my warranty expiration but there is no misteries to install a secure kernel and start installing custom roms.
i'm much happier with my CM10 than with my 4.0.3 touchwiz

1. yeah, the only way to ensure no brick after update is to flash a custom kernel. Some of the kernels you can flash include: SpeedMod kernel (very close to the stock kernel), Siyah kernel, Dream Kernel, Dorimanx Kernel etc. But seriously, you should consider this option. If you want to claim warranty, you can just simply flash the original stock kernel.
2. If you flash and you get stuck, you can also use the stock recovery. but you shouldn't get stuck anyway.
3. If you flash 4.0.4 now, you will still get Jellybean in November even before your warranty expires and If there is any need to claim warranty, you can always have your phone back to the previous state.
I recommend option 1. Update to 4.0.4 and flash a custom kernel.
good luck

need help about brick bug

i checked my phone with that app and it shows me "brick bug? yes. insane chip" so my phone can be bricked right?
right now im using android version 4.0.3, baseband version I9100XXLPW, kernel version 3.0.15-I9100XXLPW-CL413606
and i have some questions:
1. is my version that im using dangerous? or maybe its only 4.0.4?
2. there soon will be jelly bean 4.1.2 (or 4.2 im not sure) version of android so is it also dangerous? or it's only ice cream sandwich?
3. when 4.2 jelly bean will be officially able to use how upgarde my phone to it safely? odin? kies? or it does not matter?
4. what excatly i cant do if i dont want to get my phone bricked?
i know there is a lot of topics about that but i dont understand them.. i mean people are using hard language for me.. shortcuts etc..
so it would be nice if someone can answer for my questions in more simple way and explain a little bit what he mean.. please (than can erase topic )
for example im not sure what mean that dont do "wipe data and factory reset". so i cant go to settings>>back up and reset>>factory data reset?
or i only cant do that in that menu "volume up+menu+power buttons" (no idea how it's called)
and sorry for my english it's not my native language

1. You have the insane chip bit it`s only dangerous if you flashed an unsafe Kernel and do a Wipe data/factory reset using the popular ClockworkMod Recovery or also called CWM (Stock Samsung Recovery should be safe). However, as far as I know all 4.0.3 Firmwares should be safe from Hardbrick.
2.Yes the Jelly Bean Leak for the I9100 also has an unsafe Kernel and can potentially hardbrick your device if you do what I have described in 1. And yes Samsung will probably put out unsafe Kernels even in final Android releases because they don`t give a damn about the community.
3. If you have warranty then it`s the safest bet to do the update via Kies, altough if you flash a stock final firmware through Odin, it shouldn`t void your warranty (correct me if I`m wrong). However, from the moment you apply Root and/or a custom ROM to your phone you can forget about your warranty.
4. Stay away from unsafe Kernels, that are present on almost if not all 4.0.4 Stock Firmwares and the new 4.1.2 Jelly Bean leak.
So if you have plans to install something through CWM which requires Wipe through CWM, make sure you are using an safe Kernel like Siyah or Dorimanx etc. or of course a safe Stock Kernel.
Also reflashing a Nandroid Backup through CWM is also dangerous.
But if you don`t have CWM and won`t install it then you should be safe.

ahh sorry i forgot to write one more information about my phone..
yes i rooted it.. by uploading that 1 file. so i have that yellow triangle and 2 apps (supersu and cwm)
so i have unsafe kernel.. cause i have that yellow triangle but im using 4.0.3
but still i will simply avoid using that CWM and doing anything on it and when there will official 4.1.2 jelly bean release i will upgrade to it by kies without using cwm so i will be back to stock kernel which i hope will be safe
thx that was more usefull than reading in some topic 100 pages which i dont understand perfectly.. and on each page there is different info cause nobody is sure for 100% what he is writing

Yes you have void your warranty.
No you should be safe, because you are using a stock kernel from an 4.0.3 Firmware and at least to my knowledge they should be safe and Root itself has nothing to do with whether a Kernel is safe or not. If you would update to 4.0.4 then you would have an unsafe Kernel.
But of course if you want to be 100% sure you can always flash Siyah or Dorimanx Kernel with Odin because those Kernels are safe.
Pm me in your native (PL) language and I'll explain everything.

yeah i lost warranty second day i bought it cause of rooting it it was ginger bread 2.2
ahh okey! now i get all that stuff with kernels.. i thought rooting phone is doing something to kernel..
ok you are right that unsafe kernel that can brick my phone is from 4.0.4 only (and its stock one.. firmware.. wtf samsung! i can understand some modified kernels.. so hard to them to fix that and make it safe like Siyah or Dorimanx?)
i wont upgrade to 4.0.4 but good to know there are safe kernels to that version
and no reason to do that cause i think in 1 month firmware jelly bean 4.1.2 will be released
so lets only hope its stock kernel will be safe and wont brick phones.. or someone will do safe kernel to it
well i think thats all.. i know all i can sleep well now
thank you for help ^^

[Q] Assistance needed with first root of SG2 i9100

Hi guys. I have been a frequent visitor and learned alot about android and features. I am ready to root my galaxy s2 i9100
My details are :
Android version: 4.04
Model number gt-i9100
Baseband version: i9100XXLQ6
Kernal version: I9100xxlbq-cl911584
build number: IMM76D.XXLQB
I downloaded
ODIN 1.85
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LQB-v5.6-CWM5
I am not seeing the original kernal file up for download for my version. What else do I need for my root? Is there any advice such as best method and such. Thank you kindly everyone. Mods, if I posted in the wrong section, please move my thread to the correct location.
That's all you need mate. This kernel is declared safe by Chainfire but as any 4.0.4 kernel should not be used to wipe data because of possibility of emmc cap bug rendering your phone bricked. Root with this kernel but make sure to switch to custom safe one before attempting to wipe data.
Best of luck

Essentially flashing using a 4.04 firmware will brick the phone? or is it when I flash, it will be bad to flash using a 4.04 firmware? Sooo confused.
If anyone has the steps what I should do, please tell me. I am worried about bricking.
If I root the phone, when official JB comes out, will I be able to update?
any help guys? The thread isn't very clear what do I do if I have this kernal. Do I downgrade before rooting?
Insted of flashing that Cf root kernel with Odin or Cwm, flash Siyah 4.1.5.

I actually have the same HW version in my new SGS2 and I have checked with eMMC check (downloaded from Google Play) that my chip is safe from "brick bug"
Now the question is: which kernel to choose, CF or Siyah ? I'm planning to use CyanogenMod 10 on this phone, does kernel version matter at all in this case ?
/edit:
ROM will be either original CM10 or one of the variants (like HellyBean for example)

If GotBrickbug app by CF said your chip is safe than it shouldn't matter what kernel you use. Safe hardware.
Personally I always prefer rooting with CF kernels that match my FW version. Then if you're still unsure about the chip... flash siyah, go to advanced (while still in recovery) > reboot recovery. Then wipe data with siyah kernel just to be on the safe side. I always keep siyah 3.5.2 (the first transisiontl ics/jb kernel) for those purposes. CM10 built in kernels are all considered safe so that's the last time you'll ever be worried about it.
Best of luck, man
Thank you very much, I ran emmc check and I have a sane chip.
if I flash with the CF LBQ, what is my next step?

Samsung releases firmware in various regions and with varied carriers. So I bet that till it is officially released it will take time but when it does you will get OTA if your are on 'STOCK' ROM. but if you move away to custom rom then you will have to update manually.

To revert back assuming you didn't do backup before, download 4.0.4 firmware for your region on sammobile and flash it using odin.. Then to upgrade it when official update are up just hit OTA, kies, or flash it via odin the same way like you flash 4.0.4..
If you don't have idea how to flash then google it, theres plenty much tutorials out there.. hope it helps
Ohhhhhh. I get it. Flash using CF, or CM 10, use triangle app to remove warning triangle and if I need to unroot, flash with 4.04 (my region) using odin? Sound pretty simple. Am I missing any steps?

Actually I get confused myself hehe, by "Flash using CF, or CM 10" you mean flash what? The rest are ok..
Well, let's put this simple, Flash the CF-Root for your phone then you're rooted now, if you want to flash custom rom such as cm10 then flash it (the cm10 zip file to be flashed on recovery mode and don't forget to read the cm10 instruction before & after flashing), if you want to get rid of the triangle then do it with triangle away, finally to unroot and revert to stock, just flash stock firmware via odin..
Hi everyone! I just rooted my phone and it was sooo easy.
Thank you so much. Your advice and help definitely made it much easier than I though.

Can i flash this 4.0.3 if 4.0.4 cannot be flashed? (I had that 4.0.4 as stock ROM b4 i went to JB)
But i prioritize the 4.0.4 version, if its safe to flash 4.0.4 please tell me and i'll do it.

4.0.4's kernels are affected by brickbug.
Some devices got a Sane Chip (not affected), you can check yours by downloading got brickbug? app from play store.
Yes, Insane Chip
You can use that ROM but should be aware of its risks.
For example no wipe data on recovery mode or cmw, don't make back up nor restore them.
No, Sane Chip
You are off the hook and can do whatever you'd like with your device (regarding flashing, wipping, backing up, rooting, etc that is).
So there you have it, ALL NON 4.0.4 kernels are safe.
Well i cant check right now i fi have brickbug since i am on JB atm
But i'll flash 4.03 then
Thanx for help mate
If you run 4.0.4 stock rom with stock kernel and have an affected chip then you are at risk if you "do the wrong thing".
To remove risk, you flash a custom kernel that has emmc cap disable removed, or as stated earlier, stay away from 4.0.4.But you can use it if you wanted to.
And dont be fooled by users with high post counts etc.Ive seen people spamming 20 posts per day, most are useless tripe.

[Q] Do I have the superbrick bug?

Hi,
I've been trying to figure out whether or not the phone I have has the superbrick bug... Is there information that someone can link me to find it? I plan on loading CM onto it but I am afraid that the superbrick bug may affect the phone.
The superbrick bug was associated with at&t 4.0.3 firmware (& maybe 4.0.4). It sounds like your phone is currently working, so even if you are using the affected fimware, it hasn't reared its ugly head yet. our best course of action: DO NOT FACTORY RESET, and ODIN to UCMD8 4.1.2.
find out what you have:
menu > system settings > about phone > android version (or baseband)

Hi,
the baseband version of the phone is i777UCLL6
Build #: IMM76D.CLL6
Kernel: 3.0.15-CL1174199
Currently on 4.0.4 stock
Does any of that info indicate superbrick bug?
UCLL6 is android 4.0.4, which is the release after the known-affected firmware (see quote below)
to be on the safe side, DO NOT FACTORY RESET BEFORE FLASHING UCMD8.
Since you plan to move to CM, and your phone is currently functional, then your path forward is clear:
1) flash the ucmd8 firmware to get the latest bootloaders available for the i777. This will also leave any superbrick worries behind you.
2) root and cwm the phone
3) flash whatever firmware you want.
The AT&T ICS leaks leading up to the first official ICS release, UCLE5, had a very serious flaw in the kernel which caused several people with the I777 to lose their device due to eMMC chip damage. The distribution of that flawed kernel was fairly widespread, and affected a number of different devices. There were very few confirmed cases of eMMC damage with the UCLE5 release, but evidence indicates it may still have contained the flaw in some form. The current UCLL6 kernel appearantly fixes some issues that appeared in the previous 4.0.4 release, such as the sleep of death issue. It is unknown if the original eMMC cap erase flaw has been completely removed from this release. Therefore, it may be advisable to either not run this firmware, or use a modified, rooted version in which the kernel is replaced with a known safe kernel. Such a modified, rooted version can be downloaded from the Android Development forum for this phone. It is unknown at this time if the bone stock installation can be rooted.

the baseband version of the phone is i777UCLL6

Hi Thank you for your help...
I have some questions about the process you gave me to flash my phone:
for step 1)
Would I use odin to flash?
Will I need to unlock the bootloader?
If possible should I try to do an OTA update to get to UCMD8?
step 3)
Would it be the same program to flash with as step 1?
Sorry for these questions
Kies. I wasn't even thinking about Kies. that's surely the easiest way to get from stock UCLL6 to UCMD8. Install Kies, plug your phone in, and go.

Once you're succesfully to UCMD8, use this guide to get yourself rooted and rom'd.

No, our bootloaders should already be unlocked.
