[Q] Droid DNA network unlocked? How does ESN effect users outside of the US etc. - HTC Droid DNA

I recently posted this in another thread, however I am desperate to buy a handset so I will post ot here too.
I am now again looking at buying the Droid DNA due to being screwed around by previous seller on eBay! I wanted to ask this: Everywhere seems to state that the Droid DNA is network unlocked. Is this true? If it is then why are people sometimes stating on eBay that only GSM will work and no DATA outside of the US! (I live in Australia and this is obviously important to me)
I am seriously getting so confused because of mixed seller listings. Some people say it is factory unlocked and some people say it is locked to Verizon. What is the deal? Also if the phone has a bad ESN or they fail to make a payment later on down the track and it does become bad, does this mean it will stop working in Australia or is it solely based around US and Verizon in general?
About the seller on eBay, I have now been refunded my money for my recent transaction. The seller did not mention that the device didn't come with it's box, instructions, charger etc. He also has no intention of mentioning it because he has relisted it without even indicating it. He is just trying to get an international buyer to deal with it is my guess. It was just a handset and a case. Very misleading, I am lucky that I confirmed with him just before he was selling it. It was one of those buy it nows that need to be paid upfront.
Thanks guys!

It is factory unlocked. You can pop a SIM in and it'll work, assuming your carrier uses one of the band's the DNA supports. Mms is apparently an issue for some though.

Bad ESN won't affect you 1 bit on GSM network in Australia.
There are always some noobs who sell products on eBay without knowing what their product can actually do. Like those who mention it being Verizon locked. Cdma and LTE is Verizon only. HSDPA is unlocked.
From my Note 2, right in your face....

Thank god! Now I can just buy whichever one is the best price, rather than it telling me it is Unlocked and such. I am so damn happy now. I was worried that DATA wouldn't work! I am best to find one with a bad ESN and from someone who thinks it is Network locked then

Hi, Can someone answer this query. I am looking to buy from one of the auctions on ebay US which says the phone is "verizon locked" and has been activated on verizon. I will be using this in India. So I need to be confirmed that all Droid DNAs are factory unlocked.

All Droid DNA are carrier unlocked. As long as your network is supported then you are good to go.
2G Network CDMA 800 / 1900
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network CDMA2000 1xEV-DO
HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
4G Network LTE 700

Thanks, but based on responses above it looks like outside Verizon, 4G and CDMA bands are network locked and won't work. Is it correct understanding? Or if my carrier just supports those frequencies it will work?
In other words is it fully factory unlocked for all bands?

You might have to pm funky and ask him. If your 4G is the same frequency as what is listed then I don't see how they could block it outside of the US

I just found out that even with a blacklisted ESN the phone will still work with any activated SIM. lTE phones uses the IMEI and VZW can't block those. there is another thread in this sub forum that talks more about this

[Q] Do we know the extent of the AT&T-friendly UMTS hardware in the T-Mobile Vibrant?

[Q] Do we know the extent of the AT&T-friendly UMTS hardware in the T-Mobile Vibrant?
So as a lot of you know, the T-Mobile U.S. version of the Samsung Vibrant turned out to have hardware support for AT&T's 3G. But from reading user comments, it sounds like the T-Mobile Vibrant only has UMTS 1900, and not UMTS 850 as well. Obviously this isn't a problem if you've only got 1900 in your area, but I'm pretty sure we do have UMTS on 850 in my city.
I'm wondering if anyone with the T-Mobile Vibrant has tried using the extra 3G band(s?) and can confirm which are present. Is it 1900 and 850, or just 1900? Further, does anyone know how can I check to see which frequency AT&T provides 3G on in my city (short of relying on the clueless CSRs at my local retail store)? I've got a buddy with a Nexus One on AT&T, is there a quick way for him to see what frequency the UMTS tower he's connected to is using?
In the interest of completeness, I'll cover the questions that I'm sure will get asked so that folks don't **** up the thread with them.
Why not just get an AT&T Captivate?
Handful of reasons. I prefer the Vibrant's aesthetic, but more importantly because AT&T doesn't have T-Mobile Vibrant IMEIs on file. This means you can add and drop data at your own discretion instead of being required to use it, and it also means that their system will treat it as a dumbphone. Definitely a perk.
Why not just get a Galaxy S Vibrant from Bell in Canada? It definitely has 850 and 1900.
This is what I'll end up doing if the T-Mobile one doesn't work out, but it's a pretty big pain in the ass to get Canadian phones shipped down here whereas the T-Mobile version is readily available. Also, no warranty!
Thanks guys.
From what Ive read, the Vibrant works on 850/1700/1900/2100. --See edits below--

It doesn't work on WCDMA 850. Doesn't support it. Try selecting it only and put a AT&T sim in and see if you get 3G. Yea you won't, then try selecting 1900 only and what happens? Yea exactly.
Well, I dont have one in front of me to experiment with my AT&T and T-Mobile SIMs, Im just going off the side of the box and whats listed in the menu (both say 850). I currently have a Captivate and a Fascinate, but Im looking into getting the Vibrant instead for a number of reasons so I was just poking around. Sorry if I was passing on bad info.
~T.J.
EDIT: I thought I read of some people getting it to work on 850, but that could be wrong. Im looking again... Could it be there just isn't 850 coverage where you tried it and instead was 1900 coverage? These are OLD maps though...

Because the T-Mobile 3G network in the U.S. is listening for 3G data in the 1700MHz and 2100MHz bands, it’s the only U.S. network with which the Nexus One phone can communicate. AT&T’s 3G network listens for phones transmitting 3G traffic in the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands, which the Nexus One cannot do. All it can do is send 2G traffic in those bands, so it does, making a slower data experience for those using the Nexus One in Ma Bell’s mobile network.

Just because the it's listed in software doesn't mean it can work. The Fascinate is a CDMA phone and your gonna tell me because you see the bands listed in software that it will work on a gsm network? Really? Either way I'm not trying to get you down. Just saying if that were possible, it would have been mention already. To conclude though, it all comes down to hardware support, the software is just mirrored on all galaxy s phones. The Vibrant only does 1700/1900/2100 for 3G. The 850 band would have benefit you better for in building support, but it's not supported.

That picture is from the screen of a Vibrant. Notice the T-Mobile branding at the ear speaker? But, I do understand about the listing in the software not necessarily having the hardware. Also, I edited my post above.

Heres the test report from the FCC (showing 850 Mhz GSM):

Heres the rest results for the Specific Absorption Rate (showing 850 Mhz GSM around page 25):

My conclusion? Id say its capable because it has all the hardware (since they were able to test it), but depends on the network around you. That, or they literally software blocked it for some reason.

EDIT: Ok, had to DL the PDF files and I temporarily uploaded them on my web site server for now. Dont know how long I will leave them there however.
850 gsm != 850 umts
D'oh! Talk about needing to sleep! As I said I'm just here to learn too as I want to pick up a vibrant, but apparently I need to sleep before thinking and posting. Sorry about that!

Thanks for all the responses, guys, I really appreciate the thorough feedback.
Sounds like 850 is a bust, which is really disheartening. There's loads of T-Mobile Vibrants on eBay in the $340-380 ballpark, but it's going to cost closer to $500 to get a Bell Vibrant down here.
yeah the phone supports 850GSM but not 850WCDMA/UMTS/3G

[Q] Carrier

I have a brand new unlocked Streak with an AT&T sim card in it, from my old lg vu. All I have is just the calling plan. I want to get a no contract unlimited plan to get online, etc., since I now have this beautiful new phone. Which carriers can I use and which are the cheapest? AT&T's data plan seems too pricy. Thanx, in advance, for the help...
Your only alternative to AT&T is T-Mobile, and if your phone was bought direct from Dell, it will be a very painful alternative in terms of speed. Streaks purchased direct from Dell cannot see all of T-Mobile's frequencies, and thus data will be limited to EDGE (2G) speeds.
Bite the bullet and get an AT&T smartphone plan. Even though T-Mobile has an unlimited everything plan, the penalty you pay in speed offsets any savings you might gain from changing carriers.
Carrier, Network
I bought my Streak off of Ebay from someone in Canada. It was brand new from Rogers. I unlocked it through Dell. Does this make a difference? I have seen unlimited plans from Boost Mobile and Straight Talk and was curious if my Streak would work on their networks. I read on another site that the unlocked Streak would work on any network. Just looking for other info... Thanx.
Unlocked GSM type phones will generally work on any GSM type network.
Boost mobile is a CDMA type network and straight talk is by tracfone? Straight talk might work depending on the donor phone (or if you can get a bare sim card)
Rogers is basically the At&t of the north in the way they handle the streak, and more importantly in compability between phones.
They're both 3g 850/1900
Tmobile is 1700.
The US streak is 850/1900/2100 (which is the one offered by the dell website/rogers/at&t)
straight talk uses verizon/at&t/tmobile as it's base network(?)
You'll get call/2g off either tmo's or at&t's networks and straight talk if it uses their network for coverage.
You wont get 3g except on the at&t 3g available portions of the network.
You cant use boost mobile at all if it's only CDMA, only if they offer GSM service on top of CDMA
TheManii... Thanx for the reply and the help. At least now I have a starting point. I am really new to all this and any help and advice is really welcomed and appreciated. Keep the info coming... Thanx again.
Unlocked Tmobile phone, ST sim
Hello, noob here... This is the closest thread I've found to my problem after extensive searching, and not being "senior" enough to post on more experienced threads. My issue: I have an unlocked Tmobile branded Moto Defy. Put the sim from my Straight Talk E71 in there, and, as many have said before, I only get edge speeds. I've read other forums of people claiming to pick up the HSPDA 850 band, but would have to travel hundreds of miles from SC to actually prove that. My real question here is, why can't my truly quad band Defy pick up the same exact HSPDA 850 / 1900 bands that my Straight talk Nokia E71 was picking up? Do I have to root it? Can you explain why exactly it doesn't pick up the AT&T 1900 band? Themanii, you seem knowledgeable here. Any info is much appreciated. Thanx.
Here's the info for the two phones:
Defy: 2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100 HSDPA 1700 / 2100 or HSDPA 850 / 1900
E71: 2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100 HSDPA 850 / 1900 - American version
info derived from gsmarena.com
Firstly dont bump old threads, to granted this one isnt THAT old.
Which carrier are you on exactly?
If you're on Tmo USA your e71 doesnt support AWS(1700)
If you're using At&t with your AWS defy it doesnt support 1900
Defy = 900/1700/2100 OR 850/1900
E71 = 900/2100 OR 850/1900

Confirmed: TMOUS Radar does 3G on AT&T

(Forking original thread)
I confirmed that the TMOUS Radar *is* capable of 3G on AT&T.
I unlocked it this morning and put in a prepaid AT&T SIM (GoPhone). HTC Connection Setup ran and a few minutes later I was on AT&T with 3G support. The phone recognizes the HSPA+ signal and lights up the indicators with the '4G' label.
The phone's box says it supports UMTS 1900 -- this fact is not listed in any other spec I've seen on-line for the device. That band is only one of the 2 AT&T use for UMTS, so if you are unlucky and have only 850 then 3G/4G probably won't work. Guess AT&T uses 1900 where I am.
Do you know of any way to tell which band at&t uses in various areas?
Sorry, I don't know of any way to know that. I am not an AT&T expert -- knowing whether the phone could be used w/ AT&T 3G was an academic exercise for me just to satisfy curiosity.
What did you use for unlock?
Wonder if it'll work, roaming on AT&T 3G, with a T-Mo US prepaid SIM...

I got the unlock codes from T-Mobile.

anything required to use AT&T Atrix on non-AT&T carrier?

Such as, unlocking the GSM...
Hard to search for this since most "Unlocking" is referring to the bootloader and loading custom ROMs...
thanks.
Hi!
In what country you are? If your country use:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
then everything will be okay.
Only thing you need is Sim-unlocked Atrix. If you get sim-locked Atrix then you can easily unlock by yourself with unlock code what you can buy. I bought that code from ebay a while ago. I paid ~$14.
Good luck!
If you're at&t customer, call at&t customer service and state your reason why you need sim-unlock (going out of country), they'll give you a code for free.
I see. I'm not the AT&T customer. I suppose I shall need to purchase unlock code.

I think there is a post for this here. But if not google it. All you need is sim card from straighttalk nokia e71. Then you need to enter new apn settings. I am noon and switched mine and my wifes to ATRIX on straighttalk. Thinking of unlocking mine a
nd new rom cause of random reboots and sod. But scared. Wifes doesn't have these probs
After AT&T waved my ETF and I had a $0 balance with them they supplied unlock codes to me for both my Atrix & Captivate, sold them both on Craigslist. Luckily I had a friend at the house with T-Mo so I just popped the sim in and was prompted for the code while I had AT&T customer service on the phone.
I have a similar question, my atrix is ATT and i want to unlock the sim and use it on t-mobile, but I want to use the pre-paid/month to month type of service, will it work the same way?
They have unlimited text/talk/data for like $50/month on the month-to-month type plan, so i wanna jump on that lol

Need unlocked code for T-Mobile version

My girlfriend just bought the HTC radar 4g on craigslist but her service is with at&t. If anyone has the unlocked code and could share it with me would be great.

If you are referring to a SIM unlock code, there is a unique code for every IMEI. From knowledge you will need to purchase one or find a friend with Tmobile and see if they can request you an unlock code
On eBay sir, they're about 4 dollars, and its a Code Based unlock based off the IMEI number. Don't always count on full functionality, as some bands are different.... But Phone calls and TXT should work perfect.
Just got mine unlocked this week in fleabay for less than 2 bucks.
I had T-Mobile unlock mine. And I can tell you that the Radar works great on AT&T. My data speeds are between 4 - 6 mbps. Either HTC was kind of sneaky putting in the AT&T bands, or T-Mobile was less than forthcoming about the specs of the phone.

Neither is true. The 1900MHz UMTS support is declared right on the Radar's box.
True. And the information is out there - if you know where to look.
But notice the difference between the phone's specs on T-Mobile's website and on the HTC website.
The T-mobile site only admits that the 850/1900 GSM bands are there. The only UMTS bands they list are the 1700/2100 -Mobile AWS frequencies.
The HTC site reveals that 850/1900 is supported in both GSM and UMTS.
You will see this listed in almost all of the T-Mobile material and it was quoted that way in most reviews.
It's not a big deal - what does it matter to someone buying a phone from TMo? It's just interesting that they omit this little detail in their promotion.
