Current Evo status - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hey guys,
I just sold my Epic 4G Touch and I am seriously considering this phone. The problem is all of the reviews are from a long time ago. I'm just curious if the alleged screen ficker, poor 3g reception, poor battery life are still existent or even true as a whole. I know different roms will affect battery and all of those reviews were from stock newbs. What I did find interesting is one reviewer stated that an xda dev said the antennas are an issue.
So what's you're input?

Biggest complaint I've come across on these forums has to do with LTE connectivity. I can't comment personally because there is no LTE in my area. Many users have complained that battery life has suffered since the Jelly Bean update, but battery life is subjective because we all use our phones differently. I've seen a few people mention issues with their screens but overall it doesn't seem widespread. I like my EVO and would highly recommend it
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much

My Evo is great. I'd recommend it, especially if you're a fan of HTC Sense. It seems like HTC finally got it right, it's the perfect balance of speed, reliability, and not-hogging-the-CPU-ness. My only issue is that for some reason my camera will run constantly in the background and kill the battery, but I just use the recent apps function to close it after each use and the problem is solved.
I keep hearing about LTE issues, but I almost wonder if that could be fixed via software update. I only have 3g and it's fast enough for me.
Hope this helps!

I love this phone. After playing with this and a gs3 I would say this one. No issues whatsoever on mine. Battery life is more than enough until I get off work to a charger. Great performance, screen, everything you want in a high end phone. Even the feel of the phone.

evo lte is a great phone but the gs3 is just a tad bit better so go with that. or the note 2.

I'd have to respectfully disagree about the GS3. I've owned both the GS3 and the Note 2. I'd say the GS3 and the EVO are pretty closely matched. I feel that the screen, build quality, and camera are much better on the EVO. Now, the Note is certainly nicer. It's biggest selling point for me was the quad core and the battery life is freaking awesome. But, it really is a big phone. While I found it wonderful tooling around on the couch, putting that thing in my pocket and using it at work and such was too much. Just too big to be practical, for me anyway.

Only issue I think is a problem is the LTE connectivity but battery life is good on certain roms

I love my Evo LTE, but if you are going to buy a new phone and redo your 2 year contract, I would wait for the HTC One that is suppose to come out in March. Why lock into a 2 year contract with a phone that's been out for almost a year. Go for the newest and greatest thing. If you are buying used off contract then yes, the Evo is worth it.

High end HTC phones feel solid in hand.. Now everyone knos Samsung phones feel like a cheap a$$ peice of plastic.. I like the solid feel over cheapness This phone still is BEAST!:good:

is this sprints best phone today?

If you wanted to buy a different sprint phone today without committing to a new contract, I would argue that there is no phone better at this price point. The fact that this phone can be purchased used on craigslist for $100, rooted and rommed up with just a minimal amount of hassles is mindboggling. If someone can show me a better deal please do.
I consider that the Evo 3D with ICS is a better phone than S3(which is a crappy copy of iPhone)

You're joking, right?
1) Out of nowhere you compared the two phones.
2) The galaxy s3 is better than the evo 3d. What you said is like saying the Xbox 360 is better than the ps4. The ps4 will come out later with next Gen hardware. The galaxy s3 will come out later with next Gen hardware.
3) The s3 is a copy of the iPhone? Is that a joke? Just because they have a hardware home button doesn't suddenly make them iPhone clones. Other than that, they are probably the complete opposite of iPhones.

that might be a tad strong, but i just think if you don't already have a 3d, and are already on sprint, its a great alternative to using an upgrade. ( Can we PLEASE not mention that other phone for a while? It tends to make people angry and gets threads closed. Thank you)

Have to agree, a very fine phone at a good price, most of the time those go for about $250 in my area. I would say you will be good for a while with that phone.

IMHO Samsung makes great appliances(home electronics, washers, dryers, etc.) Their cellular phones don't do anything for me and as a previous user stated, the build quality is less than impressive. The screens always have that weird hue to them prolly due to AMOLED which i dont find appealing. And the samsung phones i've played with or friends that have them seem to have lots of issues with signal retention. Lets not forget the countless GPS problems that have been complained about on many occasions.

Help Decide

I am looking to get a new Sprint phone this week. I have narrowed it down to the EVO LTE or the Galaxy Nexus. Both look great in person, not sure what route to go. Thanks guys
evo for sure...the specs are much better and it will be even better when roms like cm9 and aokp get some stability
I say wait a few more days and then you can compare the EVO 4g LTE, galaxy nexus and the Galaxy s3.
I agree. Go with the evo. In a couple months you will be able to choose a really good aosp room if you want like the person before me said plus you get better cpu, better screen, kickstand, better camera, sd card, and the phone just feels better.
EVO hands down.
If the choice is between those two models then the EVO winds hands down, but in my opinion, with the Galaxy S III coming out very soon, you'd be foolish not to wait and AT LEAST compare/play with both (EVO and GS3) before making your final decision.

I thought the same but figured I would try it out and see how the battery was first. I'm glad I did the battery in this one is way better then my OG Evo and my 3D.
Yea the battery is not as big of a deal as ppl make it out . Don't let that make your decision
The EVO lte is on a whole different level buddy. The screen is pretty Damn accurate, unless you prefer over saturation, the battery is surprisingly better then my EVO 3d/og.I can get 6hrs screen on time and standby is ridiculous,I charge once a day when not gaming. Removable sd card ,oh and I'm a sense lover! The camera still amazes me day after day or should I say night after night lol. I hardly use the kickstand (got used to my evo3d). It is VERY fast for a dual 1.5 ghz. Honestly all I could ask for is maybe 512mb of more ram. It doesn't lag,but I do catch myself sometimes with only 180mb free. The only thing I like about the galaxy nexus is the ability to swap batteries. Which really isn't needed.

Plus the camera, I love this thing.
The kickstand is also superb.
But the screen, the SCREEN is by far the best ever IMHO. "I popped out my Otterbox Defender Screen protector excellent" not overly saturated & crisp.
I thoroughly enjoy the hardware of the EVO LTE.

If the battery is a deal breaker I'd go with the gn over the gs3 reason being you will get jelly bean on it gs3 who knows when you will get a official ota without bugs.
Not to mention stock Android experience is amazing I have yet to unlock my nexus.

You WILL get better battery life with the evo lte, that is if the nexus is still using the stock battery. Honestly I would take the 28 nanometer any day over the omap! This sucker is fast. The gs3 would probably be quicker,so if your a Samsung fan I would wait for it. That is if you like plastic lol

A few questions about sprint

So some of you might know me... Some may not but, I've been developing roms for Verizon's HTC phones for year's, and I think I might want to try a different carrier for awhile and sprint is at the top of my list... Don't get me wrong I love the user base from the Verizon peeps but it just keeps getting smaller and smaller... The last 2 devices I've had Incredible 2 and Rezound just seemed like they died before they got going by that I mean no support other than me and a couple other devs...
So what I'm asking is what are your thoughts about sprints service... And do you think the LTE should be my next device? I've played around with a lot of the new HTC phones and the LTE seems to be better than the other's, so it will most likely be my next phone, but I want to hear what you all think?

I love my LTE and have had Sprint service for nearly 15 years. No complaints here...Sure, the 3G speed isn't that great, but that should change with Network Vision project. I live in Baltimore so I get pretty decent speeds right now, but there are plenty of others that are not.
Customer Service: never had an issue with them
Dropped Calls/Missed Calls: not nearly as many as with AT&T and some others that my friends use. Seems pretty stable.
Data: 3G isn't great, but, it works and is unlimited.
Bills: Never had an issue with Billing
Hope that helps somewhat.
EDIT: I ran your NEWTS RC3 on the EVO 3D and loved it. Couldn't change ROMS after flashing yours because nothing came close...
You should definitely come over to the EVO 4G LTE forums and hook us up. LOL...
Do it newt. Data speeds are pretty decent in major cities, price is right and this phone is a beast. Two best parts: screen and audio quality. I came from the 3d and am glad I left the drama and subparness of that phone behind. Ran your sense 4.0 port at the end of my time with the 3d and loved it. Lets just hope sprint doesn't forget about this device like the 3d. Oh and there's no drama here like the 3d. Come join the party newt, we need more devs like you.
The phone is a beast, sprint is what it is

I've been with Sprint for 11yrs, it's been a rocky ride at times but they've improved substantially over the last several. I love my LTE but a friend of mine just got the GS3 and I was playing around with it and it's a really nice phone. That being said, the selfish part in me wants as many quality developers as possible committed to the LTE to try and bring development here to the level it was with the OG EVO. Since you're a developer and the phone will likely stay bone stock just long enough for you to root it, it really comes down to specs and personal preference as to design and build quality. LTE is a little lighter and seems a little thinner, GS3 seems a little more soldly built (even with it being all plastic). There's an issue of the LTE bending just above the kickstand due to the aluminum being so thin and weak in that area. IMO the LTE has a slightly better screen but the GS3 screen is still beautiful. GS3 has far more storage available to it and a removable battery. I've actually been thinking of switching to the GS3 just because all I really want is a fully working, solid, stable AOSP build and I have a feeling the GS3 is going to get there first.

If your willing to take the sacrifice from insanely fast data to Sprints mediocre data until LTE really starts going, I think you'll see this as a nice upgrade from HTC's previous devices. The build quality is something I didn't expect, because its really that nice. The one thing that I still have yet to get over on this phone, is this beautiful screen.
If you decide to come to the EVO-side I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

The EVO LTE is awesome compared to any other phone out there, period. Only draw back on the phone is not being able to take out the battery. Everything else on the EVO destroys the competition. (Well not destroy, just get the phone you won't be disappointed.) Sprints service is better than they get credit for I think. Though they need to work faster on 4G so we can stop getting charged for something we cannot use and so they can stop BSing that it is for data coverages. 3G speed is what you would expect really. Unlimited everything is a big plus. And their customer service is sub par but I think most carriers are.
From what I read here, your the man. Make it happen chief!

Word... I WILL NOT buy a phone from another manufacturer. I feel that HTC's build quality is unmatched and honestly I love Sense with Nova instead of Rosie (i know that isn't a popular opinion).
Sprint has been good to me here in Charleston, Wv. I have the OG Evo, the Evo 3D, the HTC Flyer tablet and now the Evo 4G LTE... wouldn't trade this phone for anything currently on the market.
In this area on 3G I seem to average between 1500 and 1700 mbps and that is plenty for me as I am usually on Wifi... I honestly don't care much if 4G even comes to this area and of the handful of dropped calls I have ever had, I was talking to someone on AT&T so I tend to believe that it was on their end.
Sprint service is decent i have had worse t-mobile "cough" phones seen alot nicer on sprint if your an htc fan..excited to see you considering the lte

I'm a huge fan of completely rectangle phones. Samsung Galaxy S 3 is far too curvy for my preferences.
However looking for these forums it looks like you guys have no end of troubles with this phone?
Have the multitasking issues been solved yet?
Is it possible, likely, that the LTTE connection issues will be resolved with the jelly bean update?

Some of the best battery life I've seen in a long time and that's before root. With meanrom I get something like 18 hours constant use that's music, YouTube, regular browsing, netflix and maybe 20 minutes of gaming. I can browse for about four hours on 3g and hardly dent the battery. I have some pretty bad wakelock and still get awesome battery life
As in problems you mean that we can not put this device down??!!!

As far as LTE, it depends on the area your in as to weather Sprint has the towers opperational yet.
Multi tasking? Look to zepplins thread its titled" Multitasking breakthrough" in original developement. This phone is bad to the bone. Dont underestimete the developement of it until you actually read through the forums and find out whats here.

Yeah I did some more research through the forums after this post and found the one you mentioned about multitasking. It looks like this is quite the popular phone.
Best one x variant out there. SD card slot. Sprints network is getting better everyday. I have some friends and customers on it and they love it. I have the att one x and I have never been happier. Best phones out there.

It is an amazing device for sure. BTW, zepps multitasking mod osnt just for this device its for all android devices which makes it pretty unique. Also its now fully automated, the ultimatic script will run adb and install for you right from your desktop. He also added the V6 supercharger install at the end of it. It really is awesome man. Whenever you decide be it this phone(wise choice) or another try it, i swear by it. Hope to see you around bro, later

Also check-out flex's stock w/ goodies rom. No multitasking mod needed.

Agreed with everything here. I think most of the "complaining" you've seen is us wanting more out of an already incredible phone. Trying to break past the limits the manufacturer was so gracious to bestow upon us.
But as a few have already said, even completely stock, this phone rocks with it's c*ck out. Blazingly fast, one of the best screens available (better than SG3 IMO), incredible battery life, and the list goes on.

Most complaints lately are from uninformed, impatient people who quite often spread misinformation under the assumption that they know what they are talking about because they've used every one click solution for every phone they've owned. Tried to help a guy who kept arguing against me saying this isn't my first rooted phone blah blah blah. When I asked simply what is a governor no answer, what is a scheduler they said task manager. It gets quite frustrating

I do not recommend this phone to anyone. Yes a lot of people on here like to complain just to complain, but if you decide to get this phone. Test the phone out as MUCH as you can and where ever you can in the 14 day period so you can return it if you experience the same crap I do.

Thanks. I decided to go with the Samsung Galaxy S 2 and the HTC EVO V 4g on Virgin Mobile. Combined it's much cheaper than getting on Sprint's network with this phone.

Phone is awesome except for the non removable battery, Sense freeze ups, and Sprint's horrible/inconsistent network which will have you on 2G in many cases. Those were enough reasons for me to go to TMobile after being with Sprint for 12 yrs and get the S3 and save $40 per month (3 lines) on my bill after Sprint slowly increased their prices for each 4G line with insurance (+$13) since the launch of the first Evo.
The Screen, Camera, Keyboard, Craftmanship, and Interface are better on the Evo LTE. It also has the FM Tuner.
The GS3 has better LTE connections on Sprint, has more intuitive software, removable battery, better multitasking, and 2GB RAM which you notice after using both phones. Nova Launcher and HD Widgets are great additions also.
If you are like me and are used to having extra batteries stashed at home, work, and in your car the nonremovable battery will get to you. I even bought one of those portable battery juicers and it just wasn't the same.

Evo appreciation

Can I just throw some love to the evo's display. I've had mine for like 5 months and this display still blows me away. Colors are perfect and text is so sharp.
Also the build quality still amazes me and people I show it to are always impressed with how thin it is.
Battery life is also great and I can pretty consistently make it through the day with typical usage.
I don't use the kick stand much but when I do it is very handy to have.
Been running stock sense for like a month and dont hate it. It adds a lot of functionality and the keyboard is pretty accurate with very few mistypes.
Love this phone!
That is all

Build and hardware are great. Sense camera is best out there but whenever I use another same tier android phone, I'm reminded of how slow sense is, even after the jb update.
im a lover of stock sense tooo
Do you have any screenshots or stats of your battery life? I'm thinking about switching my gs3 for my mom's evo but I want to make sure that the battery life won't be much worse.

I definitely noticed the little extra lag when I went from cm10 back to stock but I don't notice it anymore. Everything I'd smooth and the stability is top notch.

Yea loving my evo 4g lte right now and not too impressed with the m7 specs might actually keep this phone til my upgrade date depending on what windows phone comes to spint and when.
I love my evo as well but that isnt gonna stop me from getting that m7 on release day...gotta have the latest and greatest ...I'm sure it will improve upon an already terrific and very underated, underappreciated device which is the LTE ...don't think I can ever stray from the sense camera now..it has spoiled me lol
I love this phone as well. The camera and screen still amaze me. I'm also a huge Sense fan.

I just came from the optimus g (which I still have) now in terms of speed lgog beats the evo hands down, not by a lot tho. But with overall experience and screen quality and camera quality evo all day. I am so happy is bought one. With a good Rom & kernel evo is a beast with great battery life. Only if you coukd install another gig of ram, this phone would be my primary for a lot longer. It is truly sad how under rated it really is.:beer::beer::beer::beer:

I don't understand why people think Sense is "slow". Sense is not "slow". It might make UI framerates a bit laggy at times, but it's not slow. Unless you use a stopwatch and measure app opening and operation times between Sense and AOSP, there's really nothing "slow" about it. The processors we have in these phones are so insanely fast that OEM overlays basically do nothing to the speed at which Android operates.

The new camera is nothing to scoff at, to be fair.
The One looks nice. Low light camera performance is super important to me so I look forward to seeing how it performs.
Stereo speakers are nice but I'm sure ill still want headphones. Hopefully the evo lte gets some sense 5 love.

Love my evo. Best phone I've had to date. Even if I had an upgrade I wouldn't use it right now. I don't see any device as a big upgrade from what we got

Coming from a nexus 4 the EVO LTE is awesome. My Nexus (bought directly from google) had this weird thing where it rattled, and it honestly felt cheap. I like the back glass of the n4 more than the plasticky look of the evo but I stuck a case on it and now I don't notice it at all. Basically the same in terms of processor speed, and the battery life on this phone is light years better. Also, having a microSD card slot makes me feel privileged.. 16GB just doesn't cut it. Oh, and i personally like the Sense camera better. Not sure which one the tech gods think is better but the only advantage the N4 had was that "photo sphere" garbage which quite frankly wasn't that special.
So compared to the N4, I love my EVO.
Oh, and the GS3 felt like one of those toy candy-filled phones you see at the dollar store.
That is all.
