[Q] Help with Galaxy S II jelly bean update - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am new to this forum and this is my first post.
My Samsung Galaxy S II is on official 4.0.4 firmware. I wanted to know if I could update to 4.1.2 Jelly Bean official update using the "install update.zip from the sd card" option in recovery mode without rooting.
Thanks,
Ayush

Re: Cell Standby draining excess battery
Don't. Wait patiently for the official JB for your region.
You'd probably need to perform full wipe in order for the JB to work properly and wiping on 4.0.4 is risky becase of the emmc bug.

Upgrading to XWLPi

I'm currently running XWLP7 firmware and there is an upgrade to xwlpi firmware.
The question I want to ask is, does anyone know anything about this firmware? I can't find any info on it at all.
Also does upgrading through mean I will lose things on my phone like Jkay framework and supercharger tweaks etc?
I've never upgraded through kies and don't know if this upgrade is worth it or not.
Any help/info would be great
Thanks in advance
If your using a Custom ROM then don't update via kies, you'll end up in a boot loop...and even if you aren't , from what I've read updating via kies isn't recommended+is the firmware 4.0.4?

Thank you for your reply,
I'm not actually sure what the upgrade is I assume it's 4.0.4 but it doesn't say. It's tells me it's:
PDA: xwlpi (which I can't find any info on) phone:xwlpx. And Csc: lp2
If it is 4.0.4 is there any point? Do you what thanges are from 4.0.3?
I'm running stock Lp7 rom but with Jkay framework and a few tweaks and mods.
Thanks for any help
From experience and what I have read, 4.0.4 is buggy and there is also the risk of the brick bug kernel so in my opinion its not worth upgrading, stay on 4.0.3 or use a custom ROM if you want 4.0.4 although there isn't much change!

-Yes, 4.0.4 has a brick bug on its kernel.
-Yes, it's not worth upgrading to it only for NOOBS who can't read or ask questions.
-presently, 4.0.4 is the most stable, fastest and smoothest stock ICS firmware for galaxy SII. I've tested and reviewed it myself

I probably wont bother upgrading as 4.1 JB for the S2 is just around the corner.....
You say it's not worth upgrading, but then you say it's the most stable, smoothest and fasted stock firmware?
It seems a little contradictory to me.........

I said it's not worth upgrading four a NOOB who can read it follow simple instructions
For other people not in the above category, it's a must have.

In a way, he mean 4.0.4 is good, but you need to use a safe kernel instead of original samsung kernel, otherwise you're looking for trouble.

Cool I thought that's what he meant
I'll just hold tight for jelly bean then as I use the MHL output too much to use a custom kernel.
It's strange that Samsung have made kernels with the EMMC erase command. I wonder why they did that, there must be a reason, they're not stupid. Maybe they were trying to stop people playing around with the software..

From what I read, the EMMC_CAP_ERASE was introduced as a feature, but too bad it doesn't work well with the controller, and ended up corrupting the nand. Having said that, the way they continue to release the bad kernel to the public despite knowing the bug is a pretty bad move IMHO.
p/s: Opps, that "thanks" is free.

-Yeah, the kernel bug is bad but I'm not sure if it will brick the phone if factory reset is done in the phone and not via CWM.
-All the bricked devices reported / I've known for now, have been through factory reset or restoring backup via CWM recovery

I said so because I read from this, better be safe than sorry.
Operations that are likely to cause damage when running an affected kernel:
Wiping in CWM (and likely any other custom recovery) (confirmed)
Restoring a Nandroid backup in CWM (wipes first)
Flashing another firmware in CWM (most flashes wipe first)
Wiping in stock 3e recovery (suspected, also wipes a partition)
Deleting large files when running an affected kernel (suspected but not confirmed)

Sure, it's better to be safe than sorry but the truth still remains, a regular user, who only format /reset his phone under SETTINGS-back up and restore will never hard brick his device while running stock 4.0.4.
Technically speaking, The main problem is not with the kernel but with some bad emmc chip in some phones (galaxy SII and note). We all know that some users still have normal emmc chip and will never brick their device even if they wipe in CWM recovery while running stock 4.0.4 kernel.

You got it all wrong bro.
4.0.4 is the most stable, fastest, smoothest stock ICS firmware for our GALAXY SII.
I was only telling him to be careful because of the brick bug on stock 4.0.4 kernel

one more thing how can i perform a clean install? Can i wipe data/factory reset format system and do all the other format options?
or is there an other way?
If you have insane chip then no as you will brick your phone. You can wipe safely under 4.0.3 ROM. Once at 4.0.4 change kernel to be safe.
i'm experiencing some rom bugs... facebook is bugged etc etc i want to wipe everything for my phone and do a clean install i'll flash 403 not 404
should i wipe data/factory reset and dalvik/cache only?
what about format system and all the other format options? should i do those too?

Yes, but any recovery will do for factory-reset. (There are others than CWM)
ok let me see if I got the instructions correct
download the fw from sammobile, the stock one
flash through odin
if stuck on samsung screen, access to recovery (missing how)
wipe data
enjoy??
sorry for asking this too much but I'm still a noob with samsung devices

to boot into recovery, whatever recovery it is either stock or CWM.
turn off the phone ( if it does not turn off by on/off button, just pull the battery and leave it out for 5 seconds),
press and hold with this order: volume up+ home button+ on/off(power button) and keep pressing until the logo. release power button and keep pressing the other buttons.
wipe data + cache + dalvik cache. reboot

well we downgrade in order to go back to LG8 and install a new OTA, even though we are using OTA's if we have (i.e) LI5 we cannot update to LI9 unless we're on LG8 which is the base, also for warranty purposes hehehe

Hi, Does this work for Galaxy S2 -I9100 also, as I would need to downgrade to ICS 4.0.4 from Jelly bean XXLS6 (Leaked Rom).
hi
my wife is driving me crazy...she upgraded to jellybean 4.1 on her Samsung Galaxy 16GB and is now complaining about the lag time and that she misses the bigger keyboard. She wants to go back to the original ice cream sandwich that came with the phone.
How can I find out what version it is?
SGH-I747
SW-VER: UCLG1
I don't know if sammobile has the firmware...4.0? 4.04? Any help is appreciated--- and what steps to take to complete this....thanks in advance
and I'm in Chicago, USA and ATT is my carrier

that is not because of flashing Jelly bean on ur phone ma8, but its there right from day one on ur phone even i have the same on my phone
there is no need to worry about the same, as long as u dont do anything silly in the stock recovery ( like wipe Data/cache etc) u will be safe

No, it wont since the insane chip is a hardware thing and will not get changed by installing a diff firmware for sure, but u will be safe with GB and ICS 4.0.3 since the stock kernels of those do not have the 'mmc_cap_erase' thing in them as its disabled

[Q] Galaxy SII won't boot up!

Help! My Galaxy S2 isn't working anymore! I decided to replace stock recovery with Clockworkmod recovery 6.0.2.7. The process went well but on the reboot there was a yellow triangle and then it doesn't do anything. I'm able to go into the Clockworkmod recovery though. What do I do to go back into booting my phone normally? I was running the leaked version of jelly bean (4.1.2) on the international version of the Galaxy S2. Please help!!
Whenever I try to boot up normally the Galaxy S2 logo will pop up, followed by the sound of the phone booting up (Samsung sound) but no display. Seriously, what can I do to fix this as I am really worried. I've heard that my phone isn't bricked because I can access recovery but please, what do I have to do to make my phone accessible again?

If you're referring to the version of jelly bean I got, yes. However, I want ICS and I am confused at the minute on how to get back to stock. In Clockworkmod recovery I did a backup to my internal SD card and then did a wipe of data and of my cache. Could you give me the perfect stock rom thing to get back to ICS, as if it was out of the box?

How bad a situation am I in? Is my phone bricked? When I flash a stock rom will I still have CWM or will it be gone?
Also, can you tell me, if you know, what I did wrong in the first place? This seemed like a simple procedure...
Wait, let me read the OP again.
And don't bump the thread, edit like I'm about to.
Here's a thougt, why not focus on get your device up and runing insted of trying to get ICS?
1) wipe dalvik & factory reset your device (recovery)
2) didn't work? flash lsd or ls8 (single tar file in pda) in odin.
3) should be up and running, search for an ICS ROMs thread and flash ICS.
what happened? maybe a bootloop.

Cheers mate! Think I've sorted it! Gonna flash lsd tomorrow after the dentist Not going anywhere near clockworkmod recovery again!
I'll come back here if I have any issues. Hopefully I won't, I've flashed lsj before successfully! Thanks alot!
Btw, would you recommend lsd or ls8? Are there any differences. I know that lsj did not have pop out video player but had pretty much everything else that's available for 4.1 jelly bean.
