I see the issue come up frequently on various forums on the 'net, people with Atrix 4G's that have a lot of trouble getting their sms/txt messaging to work with car on-board systems, like Ford Sync, BMW's System, and Mazda's Bose/Navigation system, etc etc.
The systems in question support SMS/txt messaging via Bluetooth (PBAP and MAP) from various smartphones. Hardware-wise, the Atrix 4G is compatible. BT specs say it should work as well. The systems should download any texts that show up, display or read them back to you, and show you the sender/#.
I've been experimenting on both my Atrix 4G's, and it seems any blur-based ROM has a poorly/improperly implemented bluetooth stack, or possibly an incorrectly configured messaging db. I have tried regular unmodified fruitcakes for .91, .141, and 145. on both phones in several different cars.
* .91 completely fails, will not upload messages/sender at all.
* .141 and 145. will allow message uploads, but cannot upload sender properly (always comes back as 'null' on cars display ). It should be noted, that both can be temperamental downloading messaging on rare occasion.
I have also tried the .141 based Nottachtrix ROM, and the .145 based Laytveyit ELITE ROM. Both has same issues and the OEM style fruitcakes.
To further test the theory, I installed CM7. It works perfectly will all the mentioned car systems, no issues, never misses sender or message info.
At this point, I dont even know if the blur-based ROM's are fixable, but for sure in their current state the BT messaging is kind of useless. Doesnt do much good if everything that comes in is from 'null', i.e. cant tell who its really from while your driving. I have heard of some people getting these to work sometimes, but I sure couldnt.
Despite going over log-cat info during BT events, I wasnt able to pinpoint anything obvious. But that may just be me not recognizing something.
Hopefully that may give some relief to anyone whos' been frustrated by the poor (or lack of) functionality with BT messaging.
For myself, I'm using CM7 as my daily ROM now. Unfortunately it doesnt support webtop, so I keep a backup of CM7, and a Nottachtrix 2.1 build I setup, on my external SD so I can switch between them if I need to use my lapdock.
Kinda sucks, but thats pretty much what I expect from Motorola these days.... Crappy software... broken promises.
If any development/programmer type guys have any idea on the 'null' sender upload, I'm all ears.

Hey guys... long time no see..
Before I start -- I know very little about Android, so be gentle. The last experience I've had hacking a phone was with my HTC TyTN and Kaiser back in 2008, before I switched to an iPhone... I've been an iPhone fanboy for a few years now, and am now looking at Android because the iPhone 4 and my new car's media system don't play well together.
My big question is if anyone in here has any idea if the Atrix can support the Bluetooth MAP Profile? That's the profile that lets another bluetooth device (like a car's media system) send and receive text messages via the phone. Moto's site says 'no' at http://developer.motorola.com/products/atrix-mb860/.
But here's what confuses me: every other Motorola phone running Android (even 2.1) does support it... and all of the phones that have been upgraded to 2.2.1 (including the Droid X) do support it.
How come a newer phone, with a newer version of the OS, doesn't support it?
Any idea if anyone is working to add such support to the Atrix? Is there any chance anyone will release a ROM that can be applied to the Atrix that will support it?
BUMP for this as i am curious just bought a new ford with the MY touch, looking for an android phone that has the MAP profile and will work in canada.
I have ford sync and it functions well, however, whether due to inadequacies in sync or the atrix itself text functions are hit or miss. It does however work well for media applications such as using the using the bluetooth for media such as music playing and all of the steering wheel functions work correctly to pause, forward etc. To be frank, I don't really see the need for text functions through the head unit as apps like vlingo are much more intuitive....
so you couldn't get the texting to work at all through the sync system?
Vlingo is a cool app, but you still need to have your phone in your hand to control it that way

I have Android 2.3.4 and I have not been able to get text messaging between Ford Sync and my Motorola Atrix to work. (mb860 w/system version 4.5.91.MB860.ATT.en.US)
Anyone with this setup got it to work?
I think it depends alot on the car model. I have a 2010 Ford Fusion with the nav system (big lcd screen) and after a recent (not the one that may or may not have just come out) Atrix update I am able to receive text messages through the car. Pops up, though I still have to press the screen to read/hear the message. I cannot, or do not know how, to get the car to send anything but the built in reply options. It dulls the effect when you send "I love you. -Sent by Ford Sync". But yes, it works. Also make sure your car's sync OS is updated to the newest version.
As for audio it makes the sound go without a problem, but the controls only seem to work if the application is open and not in the background. Minor annoyance, and there is a few second delay but it works pretty well if you need to shut up a podcast (I love Stitcher).
On another note I just changed from stock moto rom to Cyanogenmod 7 and have lost the SMS abilities entirely it seems. Looking for a way to get that back.
Atrix 4G with bluetooth MAP
I have a Atrix 4G and 2012 Ford Truck with Sync. The 2012 version Sync will read your SMS to you, but wil not send any Text. The Atrix 4G is not listed as having Bluetooth MAP but the Atrix 2 is. And those of you with older Fords, if you have a SyncMyRide account you may be able to upgrade your version of Sync, or your Ford Dealer could do it too.
The Ford web site has a list of compatible phones (in PDF), but I don't remember where I found it. The list is old and many of the newer phones isn't listed, but the Atrix 4G is.
Oh! I had down loaded Go SMS pro on my phone and my truck stopped talking to me. So I had to remove that app.

So… What Android 2.2 ROM is available that is as close to the Unlocked factory default as possible? Or can you download the Unlocked Factory Default from HTC direct (I have tried and failed)

Most of us (it seems) in this forum got our phones when they were running 2.1 and we were able to easily root them with unrevoked. People who have gotten the Gratia or warranty replacements recently with the official 2.2 system in place have not been able to root.

Thanks for that mtnlion. I thought this was my last hurdle but then I considered the implications of syncing outlook contacts and calendars… It appears that you need a third part application to do that. FFS why can’t someone port WM6.5 to the Aria HW? It would make life so much easier.

I haven't used it in quite awhile but I'm pretty sure the HTC sync software will sync outlook and calendar when you plug in your phone.and there are apps on the market also.

Thanks again mtnlion, but this still leaves me with the issue highlighted by stone ship that some systems won’t let you root break them and put on non official ROM images. The Aria as a solution is so close I can taste it… But I am just not confident it is going to be without issues.

Well... after rereading your post it seems that you may not be aware of this.
The phone you purchased will most likely (if new) come with software preinstalled from the factory that will prohibit you from rooting it via software methods.
You will need to send the phone to someone else to downgrade it for you. Then you can root it and install the software above.

Cross your fingers that you got one with 2.1 on it so you can root it easily. If not I can point you to someone who can s-off it for you.
The Aria is a great little phone and once you get things sorted out I think you will find you can do what you need with it. Syncing outlook contacts and calendars should not be an issue either through activesync or HTC sync regardless of official or cooked rom.
You say Active sync or HTC sync??? Does that mean that M$ Active sync can sync with an Android device? That would be weird.
The device is advertised as unlocked and 2.1 As long as it is unlocked then I am good even if it is 2.2 I don’t expect to need it rooted in the immediate term, though I do expect I am going to have to hack around a little to get the Audio on my Cardo Scala headset sorted (it doesn’t support A2DP) so I may be eating those words in short order.

Seeing I am asking these questions I may as well outline the Bluetooth issue I have and see if any one can shed any light on the Android solution.
As I said in my previous post my Bluetooth headset doesn’t support A2DP, so to get music playing on it (or get GPS spoken directions) I need to perform a couple of hacks
The first one is to combine the stereo channels so on my Windows mobile I do this by applying the following to the registry.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings]
"UseJointStereo"=dword:00000001
The second (And more important) is to change the Bluetooth channel behavior which is done by making the voice command attribute do nothing (remove the path of the executable) and keeping the channel open for an indefinite amount of time (VoiceCmdDuration being a large number)

The Limitations of Android are really annoying. (Unrooted)
I can’t Leave the device Synchronizing and also copy files back and forth (I Can in WM5)
I can’t copy files directly to the device only to the SD Card (I Can in WM5)
I can’t access the SD card from the device while I am accessing it from the PC (I Can in WM5)
I can’t edit configuration files to alter how it interacts with things such as Bluetooth (I Can in WM5)
I can’t store resources such as ringtones on the device, only on the SD card (I Can in WM5)
I can’t control the phone from my desktop computer such as MyMobiler (I Can in WM5)
And these are just the limitations I have found in 3 days when comparing it to a 6 year old Operating system.
And because it came pre installed with 2.2 I can’t root it…
It really appears that if it isn’t rooted it is pretty F#$ked.
Android is not really designed to be synchronized over USB. Yes, you can do it, and HTC makes a program for it specifically, but I suggest abandoning that habit and getting used to wireless syncing instead. The only reason I ever connect my phone to a computer is to copy a file, and even then I sometimes choose to do it with Dropbox instead, or send the link to the phone through ChromeToPhone.
Even if you don't want to use Google Calendar/Contacts as your primary calendar/contacts manager, you should be able to set up Outlook on your computer to synchronize with them. I don't personally use Outlook so I can't say what the best method for doing this is, but perhaps someone else can chime in with a suggestion.
As for the SD card, I don't think there is really any significant disadvantage to storing files on the SD card. Assuming you just leave your SD card in the phone, what's the difference? Some Android phones do have internal memory you can use for copying files to though.
As for the bluetooth issue, yes, that sucks. Good luck finding a solution for that if one exists.

It is O.K. But does have a nasty habit of rebooting the device if you don’t shut it down properly before disconnecting the bluetooth connection.
It still doesn’t allow me to initiate actions from the headset other than picking up calls, but at the end of the day this is all I require.
After my torrent of negatives I have found a few starters for what Android is doing better…
When you mount the SD card to the computer it is fully available, you can read & edit files not just copy to and from (I Can’t in WM5)
Once you throw a file manager on the device it browses UNC paths well
Though It does appear I am getting some really weird $hit happening with my Outlook calendars.
And I have noted that I can’t have different screen timeout behavior dependent on weather it is plugged in or not.
If I could have the best of WM, and the best of Droid, I would be a happy little camper.
Hello to you all people of XDA, firstly I must state that I've scoured the forums far and wide and have yet to find some valuable info regarding my problem.
So what we're doing is developing (or trying to, as is obvious from this post) a custom rom for the Galaxy S2 which would be used for a single medical application for sensor tracking and the processing and displaying of said data on the SGS2, while at the same time sending it to his/her doctor.
What we need to be able to achieve with this rom is to put it into the hands of the end-user (a chronical patient which will in turn be able to stay at home instead of being hospitalized) and be able to completely lock down the phone for his use (I know, it sounds terrible) so that he loses the phone/sms/games/youtube/internet functionality as we need the phone to run as stable and for as long as possible without any additional battery stress (the constant sending, processing and processing of data seems enough of a problem for now).
I've searched into some custom roms but we eventually came up with the need for a stock Samsung rom which could be modified as we want to.
See this is where the problem begins, we can't seem to get the phone rooted, the ROM customized and then unrooted again so that the phone can't be fiddled with anymore, except when it's completely dead and we need to fix it.
So to cap it all up:
It needs to allow for a custom load and bootscreen (I almost got this to work)
It needs to be completely locked down for the end user.
It has to have full BT, NFC and WiFi functionality
It has to be able to call out and reciev calls, but only to/from specific numbers (911, doctor, etc..)
It has to basically allow for 2-3 programs to be running, while the others simply don't exist on the phone.
I am terribly sorry if anything like this has been asked about before, I swear I put 2 days of me life into researching already.
Any help, any help at all, ideas and solutions, but mostly links are welcome.

Just a detail, but the SGS2 doesn't have the NFC functionality. Project seems to be possible, I would look into CyanogenMod sources if I was you.

Is he so uncritical that he can search the web and find means of unrooting a mobile phone and then get around to actually doing it?

Block all internet access apart from ones you want or you can just setup iptables rules, shouldnt need root apart from when setting it up
As far as removing programs, just delete the apks from the zip, or before you remove root. My sig has a list of all apks in a upto date rom and what they do.
You can use gemini app manager to control autoruns (stop them etc) also to block (hide and disable apps)
As far removing root, your best bet is to once you are done, use adb (from the android sdk) to remove the superuser.apk then flash the stock kernel back, as far as I know without superuser apps cant grain root permisions.
OR
This app will allow you to block any app behind a password
This app will block incoming and outgoing sms and calls on white and blacklists
Custom boot logo (the first screen before the animation)
Custom boot animation need to go into system/media, I am not sure about the format but there are loads around, like this thread has loads, stock kernel should support them.

Most of that is easily possible.
If you listed the apps needing removed, the apk files just need deleted.
To control calls, you can use a third party app from market for that.
It's possible to have the custom rom unrooted, and easily flashed, regardless of how badly the phone gets rooted
Boot animation is easy anyway... If you can provide it in a zip like other ones (zip containing numbered png's) then it's a piece of cake.
A little bit of clever firewall stuff would prevent any web traffic, in or out, except to your defined server, which is obviously a concern when a phone is handling sensitive medical info.

LucLucLuc, not sure where you live, but you're entering the patient confidentiality minefield with big, big boots.
Apart from the legal considerations, your question is definitely OS related and not device related.
I see what you want, but legally - where I live anyway - it's too much of a grey area to get involved with.
I use call recording a lot for referrals and info from other doctors, but I've always asked the other party if they're OK with it. I won't record patient conversations, and I won't accept any files whatsoever that have seen RIS or PACS first - not worth it.
Can't see it's worth your while, but I'd appreciate it if you keep me informed should you decide to work on it.

I'm actually just a student doing the research and some basic Android programming, thank god I wasn't let into the bigger of the projects
But yes, this project is a colaboration of several european firms and you can read more about it at chiron-project.eu - it's a very very interesting project afaic.
I don't think we'll be swimming with lawyer piranhas soon though, the project uses sensor data (which sorta is a privacy issue) which will be monitored on a tablet running Android (currently testing the Galaxy tab 10.1 - we were lucky to order one before Steve had another one of his fits), proccessed in real time and then stored on the central server, from where it will only be accessible by the patients doctor.
Patient consents are dealt with before we even start talking about mobile hospitalizations.

Back Story:
My phone was left in my house (shared with other people) yesterday while I was at work. When I got home I was checking missed calls, voicemail etc and I noticed that some text messages were missing. I looked a bit more and it seems that 2 seperate sms message threads had been deleted and a number of contacts had been deleted too. Now, this has happened before to another housemate but we couldn't prove that it had been done. We are pretty sure we know who did it but I need concrete evidence that the phone was accessed.
Phone Specs: Samsung Galaxy S2, rooted, running CM7 latest nightly. I also have Cerebrus installed if that helps.
So my questions are as follows:
1) Is it possible to see what activity was happening on my phone yesterday? I don't have any "logging" software running.
2) Is it possible to retrieve the deleted SMS messages?
I work in IT so am pretty tech savvy, just not in the workings of the Android OS!
All help greatly appreciated.
P.S. I have already been able to restore the contacts that were deleted using the restore functionality in gmail.
The short answer is no. It is, at least in theory, possible to "undelete" stuff, but it isn't usually practical. Even if you did, you wouldn't have "proof" in the legal sense.
That said, I have been involved in a similar situation. Here's the approach we used. It is reasonable to assume that this behavior will continue. Therefore, get some logging software installed. Do NOT talk about it. Do nothing out of the ordinary. Just quietly install some software that will let you see what is going on with your phone. I know there are apps which will email an alert when accessed, snap a pic from the front-facing camera, log SMS to email, remotely lock the phone, etc etc. Based on what you need to accomplish, get these set up and then BE PATIENT. wait a few days (unless you normally leave your phone at home) and leave it again when the person in question might be around.
A pic would be sufficient proof I would think for confronting a roomie. If nothing else log your sms's. I use integrated Google Voice so I'd get an alert on my PC even if I didn't have the phone (very handy, that), but that may not be an option for you.
I also use SeekDroid for remote locking, and I -think- there's a remote camera provision, but it's at a higher paid level than I am subscribed to. At any rate that's my suggestions.
Or, the simple solution: Put a better lock code on your phone.

A lock code would help prevent the behavior in the future. For catching the vandal red-handed, I believe an app like Gotcha! may do what you need.
I just switched from an iPhone to the G-Note. While I love the phone and the great screen on it, I have a few issues I just don't get and I would "hope" there are work arounds too. Not being in this world of android long however, I'm lost so after digging around and trying to fix things on my own, I'm coming back here with the few remaining questions / issues.
1) Contact Images - WTF is up with the 96x96 crap? I'm pretty sure my old windows 3.1 could handle those too. When my iPhone rang, it would show great full screen images of the caller and not this crappy little image. I've played with a few apps to overcome this, but they all feel like a kludge to me. I am sync'd with both google and exchange contacts, and the problem is on both of them, not one or the other. I know ICS will up that to 256/256 (only on the local device, the sync data to gmail will still be 96/96 acording to the post i was reading by a google dev), but still, most ALL new phones are at least 720p ( or close ).
2) Quality of Apps - No description needed. The quality of Apps for the android, with a few exceptions, doesn't even compair. As an example, where are the real GPS apps? And those that do exist, I can't find a single one that lowers the volume of playing music etc to give directions. This is a STANDARD for all gps systems today, including my aftermarket in car radio...
3) WHY is 1-202-555-1234 not the same as 202-555-1234 as a contact phone number? Really? I get seperate logs for them this way, as well seperate entries in the contacts info ( when for instance I sync with say facebook and they included a "1" in the info there ).
4) Music Player - Similar complaint to #3. But why is the band "Van Halen" not the same as "van halen" in the info? For that matter, it does the same with the album name as well. This does not just hold true for Music player either, many many apps on this platform do this. This has forced me to spend COUNTLESS hours going over my music library on the old PC to make sure everything is the exact same in each and every mp3 file. EVERY programming language in the last 20 years allows you to do case insensitive comparisons...( strcmp, stricmp anyone? ).
5) Ya know, my list is MUCH longer then this, but for the life of me, now that I'm sitting here to rant/ask how to overcome some of these issues, I can't think of them... Story of my life.
Just alot of "little" things like this that make it feel very.. "clunky" to me. I love some of the features, but some of the little unrefined parts are just a pisser.
Jailbroken / rooted what ever. Yes I was jailbroken on my iphone and yes I'm rooted on the GNote.
1. Try GO Contacts or Dialer One(from Market)
2. No can do my friend. Personally I don't think so.
3. Again, Go Contacts or Dialer One
4. Umm... Alternative music player? WinAmp, PowerAmp, DoubleTwist etc.(I don't know why, but that didn't happen on my phone)

This is a samsung touchwiz issue/feauture. I first had an HTC desire then I got a Samsung Galaxy S2, the hardware is great but the software still (after a year of owning the SGS2) feels pretty rough, unlike HTC's Sense

Sygic and Navigon are there I guess only TomTom is missing; If you really miss a feature in Sygic usually if you post it in the forum you will find a in an update with 2-3 months.

3) WHY is 1-202-555-1234 not the same as 202-555-1234 as a contact phone number? Really? I get seperate logs for them this way, as well seperate entries in the contacts info ( when for instance I sync with say facebook and they included a "1" in the info there ).

2. Really, I've used a friend's iPhone and the apps honestly are the same. I'm not sure what you are talking about...? Google Maps with Navigation Beta is an awesome free navigation system. It's gotten me out of messes just fine. And I think your audio issue is a problem with your OEM. Mine handles lowering the volume just fine. Maybe try another ROM?
3. The numbers are different due to a number of issues. Gosh, how do I explain this.... Ok. All outside-of-area code numbers are now supposed to be dialed as 1 (555) 201 2222 instead of (555) 201 2222 to help the system establish the country. This is especially true for landlines. Since you're on an international phone it helps to add the 1 (or even +1).
So just make it a habit to add +1. So enter it as +15552012222.

You mentioned you were running CM9, is that ready in any "reliable" form for the i717? ( I don't have the international , I'm in the USA with "good old" at&t ).
