[Q] Standby screen: how to add clock, etc.? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, all.
I'm slowly migrating from MeeGo (Nokia N9) to Android. One thing I really love about Meego OS is the high level of customization you can have for the standby screen. For example I currently have it displaying the current date and time, battery percentage and the current date and time in several different countries.
Is the same or similar customization available for Android (ICS 4.0.4, rooted)? Or am I simply stuck with a black screen until I access the lock screen?
MeeGo also allows the user to double tap the standby screen to get to the lock screen. Is this functionality available in Android?
I don't want to remove / disable the standby screen as I think it's useful, I just don't want it to be BLANK!
I've searched the forums and the Play store for answers, but am flooded with hundreds of things that are completely unrelated.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

I think ur looking for the Daydream feature in Jellybean 4.2. Its a screensaver that gets activated when the phone is docked or charged.
BTW, ur device's screen turns off when ur device goes to sleep for a reason - to save power. Using a standby screen will easily deplete ur battery!

I just want to have some things displayed on the standby screen when its activated, regardless of whether or not the phone is docked or charging.
There's no tool / hack that exists to provide this function? Or perhaps a replacement standby screen that is customizable? I figured there must be, since the Android development scene is so large...

The Nokia N9 the "sleeps" when a sensor on the front of the phone detects darkness. So when I have it in my pocket, or placed face down on my desk, the screen turns off completely. But when I remove it from my pocket, for example, the standby screen activates again and I can see the current time and all the other info I have displayed there.
On the SGS2 I don't think I should have to press the button to get to the lock screen every time I just want to glance at the clock. It's a clumsy way of doing things, especially when I'm at work.

Android devices go to sleep only when the screen is turned off completely.
I dont know if there is an app that can use the sensor to sense darkness like ur nokia phone.
Maybe someone better than me can help u..

[Q] Leave screen on during Charge option missing

How do I allow the screen to remain on during a charge?
I use my phone for music in my car, but find it irratating when I have to constantly turn the screen on and enter my unlock pattern.
On other android devices there is the option to Leave the screen on during charging under Applications > Development.
Any Ideas on the Galaxy S2?
Kind Regards
Lewis
I'm pretty sure they took this out because you'd get burn-in with SAMOLED screens...
Even if you do figure out a way of how to do this I would advise you not to. The screen can get pretty bad "burn in" pretty quickly, as I had found out with my old galaxy s.
I'm having the opposite problem the screen will remain on while charging. Cannot find a setting , four example woke this morning and left the phone in the charger returned a hour latter and the screen was still on, dimmed down but still ON.
is there a way to fix this, I'm worried about burning the screen early
This is a standard android feature that was originally found in the SGS but removed in the froyo firmware upgrade, there was no reason given but it was speculated this was to minimise screen burn.
There are a number of widgets on the android market that does the same, Widgetroid is one from the top of my head but even that's a bit of an overkill. Just install to restore the functionality.

[Q] Howto keep display alive while on AC or USB?

Hey folks,
just picked up my S2 today and its simply amazing. One thing that bugs me though is, that the option to keep display active while on AC or USB is missing with the stock rom. On CM7 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 roms the option is present in settings, just next to USB Debugging.
Is there any other way to keep the display alive while connected to AC or USB?
thanks
boba
You don't want to keep amoled display continuously on, especially showing the same picture all the time. Since amoled could suffer from screen burn, causing pixels which were continuously on to wear down faster and permanent ghost image on uniform colour thereafter.

Burn in is something to think about, but if he wants to then that's up to him really.
I use Tasker to do what the OP wants, although i don't do it often.
Settings>Applications>Development>Tick both "USB debugging" and "Stay awake".
But as both the previous posters have said, watch out for burn.

[Q] Keep screen on for certain applications?

Is it possible to keep the screen powered for as long as am using the applications? Kinda troublesome that it keeps turning it self off in games or Google maps for example when am actively using them.
"Screen On" tool on Market.
Thanks i'll check it out. Though a question, is it normal for the Galaxy S2 to turn the screen of when running games and such? Had a Desire before, and am not 100% sure, but i got the feeling that when it played games and such the screen stayed on... Thought maybe that was an built in feature, it's okay for the screen to turn off when your doing some light usage, but when playing games those tend to take up a lot of resources, which should tell the phone that the screen needs to be on in some way?
Yep, it's normal. Use screen on

There's a permission that games/apps can use that keeps the screen on. I'd imagine that if they don't request this at install time that they're unable to do this as the phone won't allow it to stop battery drain.

I need my phone to stay awake AND locked!

Hello folks. I have a Galaxy S5. Couldn't be more happier (!) with this phone. First it had overheating issues since I had updated the phone and now its screen does not open UNLESS I heat the screen with pressure or hair dryer. I had checked this out and it is turned out common problem with AMOLED screens.
What I need is to stay this damn phone awake AND locked or frozen. Why because I go outside and if the screen goes dark I need to heat it up by myself and it takes LONG to heat the screen with my hand. I need to stop this phone goes dark and while stay awake I need it to be locked because I may accidently press something when it opens.
I hope I make myself clear. English is not my native language. Thanks in advance.
No help from XDA but at least I was able to find a workaround so I leave it here
I have found two apps called Stay Alive! and Touch Lock that suit exactly what I need. It is possible to download them at Play Store. One is responsible for preventing the phone goes dark and the other one is lock/freeze touch screen and buttons to prevent accidental touch while the phone is in my pocket. Cheers

Avoiding screen burn-in while Tab-S6 sleeps

I notice when the screen on the Tab S6 sleeps, text notification of the battery charge level will persist on the screen. This only happens if the USB power adapter is connected to the tablet and "screen saver" is disabled. The text remains fixed at a consist location (bottom center) of the screen, and remains for the whole time the device is sleeping.
My concern is that this text will eventually cause SCREEN BURN-IN.
MY PROBLEM ...
Display off, with wall adapter powering ON
. Screen is blank except for battery charge state is permanently displayed
. Bottom of screen shows "100% / Fully charged"
. My fear is this will eventually cause SCREEN BURN-IN of the displayed text.
MY SOLUTION ...
Make a black JPG file, which is used for screen saver, during sleep.
. Place a JPG file in folder: \DCIM\ScnSaver
. JPG file should be sized as 2560x1600, with pure black content.
Display > Screensaver > ON/OFF
. Photo frame ON.
. Select photo frame from folder "ScnSaver"
APP FOR SLEEPING
. Optionally, Install from App Store, "Screen Off Trial", by Iwashi Soft.
. This app will sleep the device and activate screen saver.
. Many other "screen/power off" apps will not activate the screen saver.
Yes. Same issue with the Note 10/+.
No need to worry. Assuming Samsung is still doing the same thing, it will occasionally move the text around.

I watched the charging notification on my N10+ and it does not move. At all.
And even if it just moves a pixel or two in any direction, nitnwikl still burn in over that area.

It will not burn in that area. It does move the pixel around, it's the same for Note 10 series. I'm sure Samsung should by now already know how to combat screen burn in.

Even if it moves a little (it doesn't), it doesn't move the whole charge icon. Just a couple pixels to the side leave about 90% of the pixels in the same place, so Ilit will eventually burn in.
By the way, I'm holding a N10+ in my hands right now, and the charge notification does NOT move.
I found this issue last night as well. I share your concern. I'm likely going to be powering the tablet down for overnight charging till this is addressed more completely.
I really don't understand this. I have changed of course. All time screen off. When wake it up, it said fully charged...
Then it must be a question of a setting. I'll go looking for it tonight.

If it's like the Note 10, there's no setting to turn it off. But there is a work around.
Go to Display settings and turn on screensaver. Set it to "Photo," but don't hit the settings icon next to it or point it toward your Google Photos. That way, it won't have a pic to load for the screensaver and will instead load a black screen.
When you plug it in, it will time out to the screen saver, which will be a black screen WITHOUT the charge notification.
If it doesn't time out to screensaver, just wake the screen up then let it time out on its own.

Thanks for the information, but if I understood the previous poster, this issue is not happening on their tablet. Tells me it may be a settings thing.
I am on vacation, tab not with me. I will check when back

Interesting. Mine lights up temporarily showing that it *is* charging, but that light turns off after 19 seconds or so and does not turn back on.
Of course
