WiFi tethering - AT&T HTC One (M7)

Has anyone been able to get WiFi tethering (without an AT&T plan) to work?
If so, did you root it and then use an app or did you have to install a custom rom?
I have tried FoxFi and that doesn't work, but have yet to root my phone.

I have the at&t tethering plan and it does work with no issues. I kept the plan from my iPhone 4s as at&t gives you 5gb with the android vs 4gb for the iProducts

I'm rooted and using "WiFi Tether for Root Users" without any issues.

Theres also a mod in the dev section for all att stock/unlocked users to enable native wifi hotspot, without the need of a 3rd party app. You'll need your bootloader unlocked and need a custom recovery though.

what am i missing with mobile hotspot?

my tb is rooted and running bamf 186. my native "mobile hotspot" app still works as an active hotspot . i guess i was under the impression that this native app should no longer work and i would have to use an alternative wireless tether app.
am i missing something? i purchased my tb about 2 mos ago.
thanks

Free tethering will continue to work on rooted Thunderbolts, as it does on nearly all other rooted android phones. It's only non rooted phones that have to pay now.
I updated to the new stock rooted rom and the new radio an now my Hotspot says that I have to call in to get the Hotspot. I can still use wireless tether program but that only does adhoc connections and not Infrastructure. Is there any way to get rid of tetherguard.apk and go back to the old hotspot so it is still free? or is the only way to go back to the old radio?
where is the link for apk of wireless tether? anybody?
no apk
It's hosted on a Google android development page.. If you google it you can find all the developers apks pretty easily.
Don't forget to click "Enable HTC routing fix" in the settings or you'll have some issues getting it to work.

Tethering on S2 withouth paying for tethering service?

Does anyone have a working hack, tweak, mod, or app for the Galaxy S2 without paying for the tethering feature from the carrier. Something that does not require root will be preferred but rooting is an option i'll take if necessary

PDANet
Not sure if it works on GSII or not.....
Try Barnacle Wifi Tether from Market... but you need Root for this...
Sent from my GT-I9100, using Oxygen (2.3.7 Gingerbread)
PDA Net does work on the SGSII without root, I'm using it right now.
is PDAnet fairly quick? I used it awhile back on an iphone 3gs but mywi was always quicker so I stopped using pdanet
I did the same thing on my iPhone 4. However, I was told PDANET is more secure than MyWi. Supposedly it's easier for AT&T to track that you are tethering without a policy when using MyWi. Of course that doesn't matter anymore now that we are on Android devices.
PDANet is pretty decent. I just did a speed test through my browser and it got 7mbps.
Edit, just did a speed test on the phone. Also got 7mbps, so PDANet is full speed from the phone to the PC.
Is there a Rom I can install which will have me do FREE tethering
without Att finding out
or another easy way Free Tethering
Please

[Q] Wifi Tether ?

So the phone is rooted and looking to start using tethering....
anything special needed to avoid verizon turning on the hotspot on my account?
which app seems best in your opinion ?
You don't even need root for wifi tether. Just use one of the tether toggle widgets and it enables tethething without subscription.
A couple threads on this.

[Q] PDAnet NOT working (need help tethering) (unlimited data plan)

As the title says I'm having trouble setting up pdanet fullversion to work properly. I've been reading a lot the past 2 days since I got this phone on tethering with it. I have the grandfathered unlimited data plan which complicates this. Ive also read that verizon has done something so that tethering apps in the playstore wont work for unlimited data plans (guessing this is why i cant use pdanet)?
Anyone tethering successfully with unlimited data plan and this phone?
Do i have to root my phone and flash a custom ROM on it to be able to use PDAnet?
Please help.
Anyone?
I have done wireless tethering w my unlimited data plan
I have not tried pdanet or wired tethering
You can only tether if ur rooted using the app wireless tether
You cannot use the built in hot spot cuz verizon will say you need to buy the monthly service even if ur rooted
I am unlocked rooted and on ukb 1.21
Using wireless tether
Put your settings on generic ics/jb wlan0
And force wifi driver reloading

WiFI Tether/hotspot Options

Hello everyone,
I am trying to gain some general knowledge about the current state of tethering on android in general but more specifically for my situation on a unlimited data plan on Verizon on a Samsung S4 i545. I'm currently at Android 5.0.1 on OF1.
From what I have gathered so far there are two basic ways of doing wifi tethering these days.
1) Mod the built in tethering application so not to check with Verizon for the tethering plan.
2) Install an app that uses it's own or iptables type of network routing to do the tethering.
3) tethering apps that don't need root (ie FoxFi)
First off if there are more options that I'm not aware of please let me know.
I would like to "fly under the radar" as much as possible being that I'm on a grandfathered unlimited plan. This leads me to believe that using a app that does routing would be a better option. I have tried many of the free apps in the app store and most do not work with my setup.
I believe the following apps are apps that actually do routing.
"WiFi Tether Router", "WiFi Tethering by OpenGarden", "Barnacle WiFi Tether", "WiFi tether" (also known as Wireless tether for Root Users or android-wifi-tether)
I have root but I can't get any of these to work. (with the exception of WiFi Tether Router as I haven't actually tried that app because it's a pay app)
Other options are installing mods that modify the built in app tether app like
I545_OF1_tetherAddOn.zip
And last the option of running an app like FoxFi that doesn't require root. and looks like it is using some kind of VPN to get around tethering? not sure how this works or where it stands but I think it's also using the built in tethering app and just somehow bypassing the Verizon server that checks for a tethering subscription.
if anyone could help shed some light on how these apps are working I could then decide at what level of exposure I was comfortable with. As of right now and my limited knowledge of how they work I think an app like WiFi Tether Router (if it works would be worth the purchase)
Thanks,
Chris

You should look for the WiFi Tether Router paid app apk online, i have the same problem with WiFi Tether, and also flashed the I545_OF1_tetherAddOn.zip and still no result, so I'm going to look for the app's downloadable apk link and share it with you, I'm also going to try it ☺☺

I'm wondering what can help us with WiFi Tethering too, so I tried a lot of apps and methods and nothing worked, the only tethering I was able to get was USB with FoxFi, tbh works really nice, even better than my home internet, I'm foreign so I cannot enjoy 4g on this phone but still got a pretty much decent speed, it's not WiFi tether but it doesn't bother me because works really nice. Still will try to find any other alternative to get WiFi tether but for now FoxFi USB tether seems to be our best option
thanks for getting back to me on this.
Again I'm not just looking for a solution to my specific situation but rather trying to gather information on how the different methods and approaches work. I feel as if I only have a slight understanding of how each approach works. I'm pretty curious to what all the VPN stuff is about that some of the non root apps are doing.
WiFi tether router by Fabio works also for USB tethering KLINK works with option "mimic mobile device" set to on both paid for apps.
A little feedback about Foxfi:
I didn't wanted to connect my galaxy to the pc so I decided to try WiFi tethering and it worked! just follow the instructions it gives you and it will work, if you wanna change WiFi name or password do it from Foxfi, default tether manager just turn off tether and doesn't change anything
Thanks mahn
