[Q] JB update on I717 has rendered this phone officially obsolete... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

The Samsung update has been itemized and posted on numerous news blogs. Each details all the fancy new features.
Well has anyone actually been able to use them?
Isn't this already 10 months after JB was released?
Why are there more blogs about the features 4.1.2 is supposed to include, and not more about how none of them are actually there?
I have read a few posts about the features being activated "at a later date". Why is this necessary? I have come to the conclusion that the Note I717 is officially obsolete.
No mutli view.
No page buddy.
No "increased preformance" from butter.
no fun.
Ok this rant is really just to see if everyone else feels the burn. Maybe all our internet rage can make the developers realize they should stop pushing out lack-luster performance! Not that we keep things stock, I would like a better foundation to build something amazing onto though!

I dunno, I really like the release. I am happy we got it.

Nice first post. Now, maybe you should spend a little more time researching and you will find that when JB was released to our phone....the source code should not be far behind.....and the source code is what is exciting and needed for the devs!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

I for one am over the moon that Samsung came good for this update. I now have a fully functioning Google Now experience on a rom that is stock stable.
I went for a 12km run this morning using sporty pal to track my distance and listened to tune in radio the whole way...for fun, I whipped out my camera and took a few pics along the way. All this with decent battery stats.
Any other rom I have used would have crashed at some point doing all those three things at once.

Thread closed. Appreciate the angst and anxiety being discussed, but this is a development site.
Why not contribute to said development versus complaining about "stuff"?

[Q] new phone long wait?

i know i posted up earlier about the red border. Everything is good now. I just now have questions about this phone and its development stages. Since for some reason i cant post in dev page. I have to ask here.
So i was half tempted to not get this phone simply because i browsed the threads and saw no real roms or kernals that do anything fancy. I come from an evo 3d and could flash a rom every single day if i wanted because there were so many. I know this phone is new how new im still not sure upon. I see a real lack of any development on here. The best you can get is turning your og into a nexus 4 and than have cm 10.1 with the downside of only 8gigs of storage period. Well that was the whole reason i did not just pick up the htc one x was because there was no expandable memory and at most you had 10g of internal storage and thats it! so whats going on here? I know alot about the scene and though i have no coding experience myself nor rom building experience. I do love to test roms and i really want a not a stock feel to the phone. Where is the overclocking, where is the transperent status bar, where is anything to make this phone really stick out from stock? Hell i was running jb 4.2 on my evo 3d. Now im stuck being back on ICS? How is this possible that there is not stable jb port to this phone that is properly working. I have 14 days to return this phone. And with people releasing roms that the camera does not work, and storage is crap, and no overclocking support, is it because this is not the phone i thought it could be? Am i not doing enough research. Im currently rooted, unlocked, and running nocturnal limited, and i still feel stock and still 4.04.
Is this phone going to be heavily dev supported like the evo 3d is still today or should i return it and get a phone like the htc one that actually has dev support. All the roms i have seen for this phone is almost complete garbage interms of what this phone should be capable of. And the idea of turning into a nexus 4 is the most idiotic thing i ever heard.... let me change my phone to be another phone? Who wanted that and why did they just not go and get the nexus 4? I may be ranting but i could have got the htc one for .99 as opposed to the $100 i paid to sign a contract with att. I want to know if i am really getting jipped here. Is this not the phone plenty rave about? If your on this site there is no way you want a stock feeling phone and thats what i feel we are getting. I donated to get the freegee app to find out there is no good roms therefor no need to unlock the bootloader so i can flash roms that are not here..........
please dont come at me like a hard a$$ and talk crap, im simply expressing an opinion and asking questions. I loved my evo3d and if i have to carry both around because my 3 year old phone is 10 times better than this optimus im going to be upset. I would just like someone to explain what is in the works with this phone, and if and when there will be some real dev support and why there is almost non at the moment. It sad when devs are still all over the 3d posting new roms everyday, and this one has 5 that are garbage?
thank you for your actual intelligent responses, and cant wait for some nerd raging on me for blasting this out like this. Im simply being real.
Try reading this forum for the answers to your questions. Then maybe sell your OG to someone who appreciates it and knows what to do with it. Sounds like you'd be better off with a SG3. Good luck.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Wow.... I'll take your OG if you don't want it. Seriously, I will.
This is why I like having iOS around. That way we can weed out the idiots from android. You should really check out the iPhone. I hear it can make phone calls. You should like it.

exactly the responses i was expecting lol.....
Its clearly obvious i have read the forums as i am rooted, unlocked with twrp and nocturnal limited rom... so thank you for pointing out how much i have not read.
As for the sg3...... well thats is just an over priced piece of trash everyone i know hates them.... so thanks but piss off...
as for your iphone comment... only mainstream looooooosers have iphones as they are for the dumb...
no you may not have my optimus if i do anything with it , it will go back to att and ill get a htc one x+ at least people are doing things or at least talking of things they are doing.
HTC has huge dev support and this being my first LG i knew it was going to take some getting used to. I was just hoping for a little more out of this highly praised machine. It is a great phone, i will not say its not. I just was expecting from such a great phone a huge dev following of which i do not see. I see about 5 different roms, a custom cwm touch recovery, and hmmm..... turning your optimus into a nexus.. For you thinking that i am bashing on lg and should give it away.... there is people here pretending there phones are different phones... "hey look i know it says lg but is totally a nexus!" I can download a launcher that makes my phone look like a windows phone.... but hmmmm how dumb is that? At the end of this rant, i was curious as to what anyone knows about the future of the development on this phone. Clearly you do not have answers because that would take thinking, your idiotic comments and replys did nothing to offer any sort of answer nor did it show your IQ being anywhere near that of a 10 year old..
I clearly posted i await your nerd rage and therefore clearly enjoy it, however this thread was not started with the sole intent of it being a bickering fest. I wanted some serious answers, and I tried to express myself and thoughts on this phone along with questions that involved the future of this phone.
I am a flashaholic, i love to make my phones the best they can be. I love anything custom! So if you wanna cry about my thoughts on the phone cry, ill bring you a tissue, otherwise offer some real insight into what this phone is all about, and hopefully where this phone might be heading. Otherwise take your trolling, crying , butthurt comments somewhere else, as they are just absolutely humorous to me, and ill will reply accordingly.
Thanks and hope to hear some real comments...
btw: i cant wait for the grammer police comments cause it seems if no one has something good to say, they just like to correct your grammer, sort of like "your a tool" "no, your a tool" and we can definatly take this back to 1st grade if you like.

"have the AT&T LGOG and it's rooted with unlocked boot loader and is running a custom ROM called The Base. Devs are working hard to build a way to easily port any Nexus 4 ROM. They have CM10 working but are still working out the kinks before releasing it. CM9 and a stock AOSP rom are also in the works. The Base is a stock, rooted, and debloated ROM and it is already out. Development is going strong and everyday I see more developers move on over to it. Since it is very similar to the Nexus 4, once all the hard work is done building the device tree, roms are gonna come flying out."
by joecascio2000
I do believe its a great phone, but heavily relying on nexus devs to do all the dirty work, granted they are practically the same. Again i wanted to know whats up with this phone.
Stop. Seriously, just stop right now.
If all of these features are important to you, and flashing a new rom everyday gives your life some meaning, then you made an idiotic move purchasing this phone.

And...? Everything I said is true.
LGOG is rooted and has unlocked bootloader
Has stock roms (The Base, Slick, Noc)
Devs are still working on a way to port Nexus 4 roms (I believe it has to do with building a device tree and obtaining source for JB kernel)
CM10 (an actual ROM, not the N4 conversion) is "almost" done (About 3 weeks ago a dev said it booted and they could hear the lock screen but couldn't see the display due to driver issues.
A dev was working on CM9 but I believe they stopped because there was no point in releasing an outdated ROM.
Development is going strong and everyday I see more developers move on over to it. - Fact (Development is a slow process. They have made huge progress in only a few months. This phone isn't like samsung. They are working from a locked down system with no source code. They are amazing for what they do. They are some of the best devs on XDA.)
Once we have on bootable ROM, which will happen, Roms will be coming out quickly.
So I guess the real question is, "Do you actually know how to read?"

never said it wasnt true, just was in response to your ignorant iphone comment as well as the learn to read comment. Stop nerd raging for a minute, how hard is it to answer the questions? I already made a comment on the cm10.1 in my op.....all of the stuff you listed in your comment i already did... I asked what is next? What do you think the future dev is? Will this actually have a strong dev following? Will there be any decent , stable, overclocked, tweaked roms to come to this phone.
Thank you for finally giving me a little more of an answer than a mean spirited remark. I am no idiot, i did not post anywhere in this forum newb questions on how to root my lg, or unlock it, or flash a recovery, or install a rom..... I wanted to know what is really going on with this phone. So thank you joe for actually answering my questions.

You sir..... Is your computer broken, are you stuck on my thread and only my thread which is preventing you from looking at anything else, instead of making a dumb rude comment? Stop trolling every thread and post that is on the site.... you talk about giving my life meaning and here you are telling me to stop it? Hmmmm who are you? I asked questions and my personal feelings on the phone thus far, and in no way bashed the phone or its following. I simply asked questions. I posted joes comment because as i read i actually found it useful. So thanks for peeking in this thread but your comments are best left in that pea sized thing rattling around in your giant head some might call a brain.. I asked questions in the Q and A forum......your comment was neither a q nor an a thus GTFO! XDA is where is got a lot of my EVO 3D questions answered and i respect this site. Its arseholes like you that make people scared to ask questions for fear of some ignorant jacka$$ trying to put them down.
I however can not and will not be intimidated, if i have done anything to violate the terms of this forum, please report me and have me banned. Your STOP IT attack was in no way useful.
SO..... STOP IT, JUST STOP IT!

Wish I had better news. We are all eagerly and (in)patiently waiting for the first release of non-stock roms. Unfortunately, it's just a waiting game. Right now it's LG's move and they are taking their sweet little time. We do have a strong dev following. They are lurking in the shadows. We are very fortunate that we have both an international version of this phone and also the Nexus 4. That gives us two pools where ROMs can be ported from. Just like the Nexus S, i9000, and Samsung Captivate. All of which are still going strong. It took time to get things setup for those phones and like I said we are at a disadvantage because LG isn't as "helpful" as Samsung. Development will take off one way or another, we just have to wait.
IMHO though, nobody should be complaining because stock LG is amazing. And the stock ROMs are perfect.
Dude....
Your entire post sounds like one big vagina monologue.
"There is not enough dev support for this phone..... I can't believe we don't have a stable JB ROM..... I want to flash a new rom every day....."
Waaa waaa waaa :crying::crying::crying::crying:
No one is intimidating you.
Just making the point that you obviously did not act like a rational consumer by purchasing a product that does not meet your expectations, then complain about it in the QA section.
Not sure why you needed to create this thread. Return the phone and get something else if you aren't happy with it. It's not rocket science, lol.

Guys, settle down please. Let's not turn this into the i777 forums. I'd rather not relive that.
This phone is too powerful to not be developed, but developing for ICS is pointless when JB is coming. There will be much more development. You must just be patient. But in all honesty, Samsung and HTC will probably always have more development, so if you are a flashaholic, I would go with the SIII.

They wouldn't close this thread, it has been nothing but honest, intelligent, mature, informative discussion.
But honestly, this has been asked a lot... We are hoping development will pick up after the source is released and JB hits our device.
But there are no guarantees, it is kind of your fault for picking up a device (great as it may be) that doesn't have 20+ ROMs out for it, you should have looked here first and shied away from the device if development was so important.
Based on what we have heard from devs, the work is being done, it is slow going with no source and nobody wants to work on ICS when JB is coming so soon.
Also, one of the biggest problems here, you called what development we have seen released "garbage," most likely (hopefully) the devs can dismiss that statement as the angry rantings of somebody with a bad filter, but it is still terrible motivation to spur development further.
Work has gone into the development we have seen, it may not have quite the shock and awe factor you are looking for, but they are solid works.
It sounded like you were very unappreciative and then demanded more, maybe not your intention, but that is how it can be construed.
I'm not trying to bash you in any way, but the community does better when there is less... negativity.
Also, no need to be so defensive, you knew you would get the responses you did, should have just let them slide.

dood i agree the i777 forums was a nightmare with all the immaturity attitude around
I get the feeling OP is the kind of guy that complains when he gets free stuff.
As for getting a new phone, good riddance. You really didn't need to make this thread. A lot of us are waiting on custom ROMs and CM10 and all that. You don't see us whining about it like a little girl (no offense ladies )

MaceksMod Mecha Rebirth?

Why has this been locked?? There are no ICS ROM's that are any good??? Santod's basic ROM is just debloated stock.....
I really don't understand why they find the need to play God around here.... There are no ROM's!!! At this point there is no reason for an XDA Thunderbolt page!
STOP LOCKING THREADS... WHO GIVES A CRAP THAT IT IS OFF SANTOD'S BASE... THIS IS WHY THE PEOPLE DO NOT LIKE ANDROID... TOO MUCH POLITICS AND BULL CRAP.. JUST LET THESE GUYS MAKE GOOD ROMS SO WE CAN ENJOY OURSELVES...
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH BUILDING OFF OTHER PEOPLES WORK.. ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S CELL PHONE SOFTWARE!
JESUS H CHRIST..,..
Where can I find this ROM now? It has been removed from roots wiki as well?
5 custom ICS roms and 4 stock roms >>> HERE
Look around, there is more then just a stock rom there.
Don't speak about something you do not know the details of.
XDA has rules, so do other sites and when it comes to disrespecting me and the source from which you got your materials from, I then have rules too.
Besides, I have been told numerous times now that what I contributed wasn't anything, and easy enough to do.
So there should be no problem with it standing in any real devs way.
They simply make their own base and move on.
So crying about it is unnecessary for anyone involved, including me.
Everyone just does their own thing and moves on, simple as that.
I am hating on you Santod.. I have a lot of respect for you and i am sure everyone does.. I am on your rom right now.. The non eternity one... And it is honestly awesome, i just want a more aosp rom, i know you have a desense rom in the making but it has been pulled for weeks now.. I wanted to see mack, you, and jester all make a combined kick ass rom.. I am crying because i just want to see the tbolt finally succeed and with the help of all you great devs and hopefully an htc source code release.. The day may come.. I think you should all work together... Everyone respects all the devs but its awesome to see you guya work together.

Check the last few pages of the thread....
I believe I posted 3-4 updates on that rom, this week alone.
Wow now I remember why I just got over this phone and moved on. Santod040 is the only one that attempted to integrate the patches into gb to get ICS for you guys. It wasn't a typical ruu, a lot of work had to go into that integration. And then everyone acted like it was open season on his work. His attitude might have been better if he was ever asked in the first place for it to be used. But he wasn't, and none of the other ICS roms really were any different than any of his. And I have seen a lot of people say that integrating the patches was easy work, but yet no other dev has done it themselves. There's a difference between development and taking someone else's rom zip, theming it, adding other tweaks also developed by someone else, and calling it yours.

This is a pretty good explanation of where I think santod is coming from even though it isn't coming from him directly. All of you are acting like it was some walk in the park or something to assemble the ota but it sure is taking all of you a lot longer than it took him to do.

Not really trying to speak for him, just back him up. It seems the easier rooting/roming becomes the less people seem to understand (or care to understand) what goes into development. They just want it now and don't care how they get it.

Everybody respects Santod... but his ROM's are not on XDA they are on Infected Roms.... I am on his NuSense Rom for a while now.... It just seems ridiculous that Mack and Santod could not work together IMO... Now if Mack was refusing to give Santod his fully deserved credit for the Base and Stock Rom then yeah I understand.
I am not hating on Santod what so ever... I am getting the best battery life ever on his NuSense Sense 3.6 Rom... With Nova Launcher it actually moves pretty nice too for stock kernel...
Let's be honest though... Sense 3.6 sucks... Sense Sucks... We all want AOSP.. That is not happening until the Source get's released... so a Desensed Rom is something of extreme interest.
I can not wait for the Jelato Santod Rom to be done... I just figured maybe Mack or Jester may be able to throw Santod some ideas maybe and before you know if we would have a 10x better DeSensed ROM then if it was just by one particular Dev.
Yeah I mean the only thing that bugs me is that while Santod makes a good rom, he cant help himself from customizing it the way *he* likes it, and not the general public at times. Every time I use one of his roms I'm like "wow, amazing performance, sweet battery life, all the features but wtf is up with this font? Why this theme?". It'd be like getting a rewritten AOSP rom built from HTC's source, and then shipping it with a hello kitty theme I liked Mack's work because it had that truly vanilla feel to it with all the under the hood tweaks a launcher like Apex can offer. The new Jelato rom actually runs worse than the unsense rom, albeit just slightly. It's certainly better than Sense, but still kinda leaves something to be desired.
I guess what I ultimately dont get is why anybody cares if someone else rips off your work. It's not like either of them are being paid here, which means it all comes down to fame and recognition. If your motives are pure, and you are simply doing this for the community, then you should be happy that someone went and tweaked a new flavor of your rom for everybody to use. Why there's this whole desire for credit is beyond me. Seems kinda conceited. "How dare you steal my charitable donations!" What have you got to lose?
Like I said, I really dont want to see just one rom developer out there. If santod is the only one left with the skill to properly port these things, then he should be supportive of others customizing his work. It does do him or the community any good to horde all his development unless there's some sort of financial incentive in it for him and he needs revenue from this somehow. And if he gets bored or offended and quits then the TB community just dies forever? That sucks. If the only people left willing to contribute are kanger's, then let them! We cant have our entire community rest in the hands of one developer.
I support and help anybody and everybody that treats me with an ounce of respect.
IT IS NOT ABOUT CREDIT!!!!
I could give a **** about credits or your complaints about my theming.
Maybe the theming is my way of saying it's mine.
The original UnSense was about as Vanilla as it gets really.
If you don't like what I have to offer up, then don't use it, it's simple.
If the fact that someone else left their rom half sense and half aosp makes it more vanilla for you, then fine.
Use his pieced together rom, I don't care.
What do you guys want from me?
Sure, treat me like an asshole, but feel free to help yourself to my stuff....
Anyone whining about this still, needs to get a life.
Any real developer wouldn't have batted an eye, made their own base and rolled along.
If what I contributed was "nothing" and easy to do, why all the fuss?
By the way, everyone else loves the theme, you happen to be the first to complain about how it looks.
There is this thing called UOT and another called apktool, maybe you should find those and learn to use them, before you go criticizing anymore work of others.
You may find yourself with ZERO rom options!
Any useful thread on the matter that is not just santod vs the world or people complaining about locked threads will not be closed.
This is not such a thread.
They serve no useful purpose for the community.
If you have issue with this PM me, I am not looking to "play God" or any some such activity, but the denizens of this community must be spared such drama as found in this thread.
Let's all work together to create a better development community.

go to rom

So I'm giving my note i717 to my niece who just destroyed her s2 skyrocket. I just picked up a note 3 on launch day. Since I have been out of the loop and already spent well over an hour browsing threads I figured I should ask for some help. What is everyone go to rom. would like to give her a 4.3 rom but not sure how development has gone lately. Just need stable and best battery life. my old favorites where carbon 4.2 and the only 4.3 was the 8-14 cm 10.2 or something like that. I really appreciate it and I know these questions are sometimes frowned upon. I also remember the stock att rom being complete garbage.I appreciate it so much!!:good:
by ROM I also mean a really good date. Not all bids are equal or w/e eg:cm10.2 8-14
I prefer stock based like Padawan and Blackjelly. But the most stable 4.3 for me is Slimbean. Its light weight and blacked out which means good battery life.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
Yes I remember slim bean baing extremely ..... slim=) Thanks for your response.
I have had very good success with Hellybean also, but Profresh is probably right.
4.3 have come quite a ways in a short time and are much better and more reliable than 4.2. question though, and this leads to why Profresh has made a wise suggestion. is it your intention to sort of monitor the progress of the Note after you give it away?
even though 4.3 is very good, there is still work continuing in a feverish pace. updates galore. good for most folks like us. but is your neice going to come over every week or so, so you can update her phone?
Black Jelly and Padawan are both super solid. requiring little to no maintenance. perfect for the teenager on the go.
just something to think about
XDA is a development site not a support site. As such members are expected to do the research, read through the development threads and decide what is BEST for them. The only results that would be posted here are what each member has found to be BEST for them by experimentation based on their phone/usage/setup/apps/signal strength. I appreciate all the effort and all the time developers and well wishers have put in.
But im afraid the actions of adobe sabotaging flash, the introduction of more java based (html5 browsers, inc Opera :crying leaving my poor ghostry plugin on its knees, and the fact its one 'fix' after another just to be able to USE the thing, has left me weary and shattered..
A real problem searching for help and answers is soooo many damn 'How to's', blogs, lists of blogs, blogs on lists of blogs, mega links, threads, mega links on how to's, threads with lists of current and old devices in posts that search engines pick up on, with no relevance.
I've just seriously wasted days and days and weekends.
So im calling it a day, and going back to the last good, really good rom I had on the touchpad where at least stuff I want worked.
Forget all your fancy updated, nightly working but not working, use at your own risk, but.... roms.
Yes its great fun, but there comes a point where enough is enough. For me, for now anyway.
Cool down my friend. Relax. Everything will be fine.

Could always nix android and just use WebOS as HP intended. Or flash one of the froyo testing builds. Lol.
Seriously, respect the devs, and testers, bite your tongue, grit your teeth, and accept what we've been given. CM9 is super stable, use that and be happy. Starting a thread in the Dev section to rant is pointless, and will only turn those willing to help against you.

CM9 is your best bet, its stable and flash works great on it btw.
The thing is old. Be happy with CM9. Or but a new tablet.

Just what ive done now. Posts been moved. Only posted there as there are few if any looking at the bigger picture. After all a device isnt only about what it can / cant do. But how you can use it, how it makes you feel when you do. Anyway im back to the last tenderloin (never knew what that meant) but its much better and importantly, its much more usable. Much happier.
Also quick mention, check out the new Next launcher 3d. Amazing, and my touchpad luvs it. So do i

Are all custom roms slowly dying?

I notice quite a lot of rom threads are being closed...
only a few are being updates while lots were lasted update near the beginning of the month...
Lol.. There are too many roms already and almost all of them are very stable. So why do we need nightly/weekly updates if we have something like pure nexus or chroma running solid? Custom roms will live forever especially for nexus devices.

Another one was added today. I'm patiently waiting to see if pure nexus appears with cmte. Its in the works.I hear
No end in sight! This is XDA ftw!

The community legit doesn't deserve for him to continue.
His threads would literally make me sick the way ppl treated him. The way they DEMANDED alterations as opposed to asking. The way they asked over and over, despite his firm NO.
I'm gonna miss the hell out of his ROMs. The best. If some major changes happen, maybe Ill move to Pure Nexus, but for now... and a long while... I think the latest Cata mod will be on my phone.
This community truly sucks, sometimes
This has definitely been true for non-Nexus phones. I was big into LG phones, I had the G2, G3, and G4 (all on Verizon). The G2 had tons of development, both stock and AOSP ROMs, and the G3 was similar but noticeably less. The G4 has been non-existent. I remember the days when virtually all phones were rooted and unlocked by devs, with lots of custom ROMs, but this seems to be going away very quickly. Now it's likely if you buy a non-Nexus device, it won't get root at all, let alone custom ROMs.
Looking at the 6P development, I see what you're talking about. Lots of ROMs that started when the phone came out have ceased getting updates, and you only have a handful of solid ROMs to choose from.
I wouldn't be surprised if custom roms are a dying breed. IMHO part of it is that Android is slowly moving towards getting the basic feature set and UI tweaks that people want, and more manufacturers are trimming down their bloated UI's (some exceptions obv, unnamed). But also --- this may sound cynical, but just from my own observation: Many of these enthusiast-worked/powered/funded projects are far too often met with self-entitled users (in the very literal sense of the word) who think their use of the rom/software/art/w/e entitles them to complain endlessly about every little thing and every minute lack of an update (or desired/demanded feature) for what is usually a free or donationware product. Not to mention the people who are too careless/hasty to follow instructions and end up bricking their devices, only to blame the devs and spew a bunch of vitriol. I don't blame anyone who quits at all.

That's one breathe taking letter! Wish him the best and this Developer will be missed by XDA...
I love custom ROMs!!! I remember when I unlocked my first smart phone the first evo and I found the perfect stable ROM for it...now every time I get a new phone I find myself searching for a ROM I think it makes whatever handset you're using perfect. Thank you to everyone that takes the time to develop
the past roms I used, have not closed down.. Cataclysm was the second rom I used and liked...
I try not to use any roms that are CM based.. lol.. not sure why... I like the AOSP based roms better...
XDA has been going downhill for years now. Seen some amazing devs and funny members just up and leave over the years for this very reason.

Every ROM will meet its end some time... Beanstalk disappeared. Avatar halted. AOKP is no longer active. ParanoidAndroid and PACman had gone big in form but small in functionality and usefulness. Even CM, with Google incorporating more and more changes into each new Android version and limiting features these ROMs can touch, might die out someday.

Yeah some people here do not understand devs do this in there free time, for fun theycowe you nothing and you are very privileged to be getting such incredible free software. This upsets a lot if devs and makes them leave the community.
I stopped publishing my own approach of a ROM after I got rid of my old Samsung Galaxy S3 and moved on to Nexus devices. I'm happy with a customised Stock based ROM which suits me well. I'm not sure if anybody else would be interested in it since the Nexus forums offer a great number of custom ROMs, some of which are filled with extra stuff. I can somehow understand the guys who stop publishing their work. I never asked for donations, in fact I don't have a PayPal account linked to my profile Maintaining a ROM is a huge effort, especially if you're on your own and not part of a team.
ROMs are no longer needed plain and simple. Back in the hay days of ROMs, Galaxy S2 and 3, HTC EVO, ROMs were a necessity considering how badly optimized phones were back then.. running great software with horrible specs. Developers made the phone a lot better... I still remember the days of running Viper ROM on my samsung epic on the Sprint network.. those were the days.
Fast forward today I'm going on two years without flashing a ROM and reality is I see no need for it.
I pose a question to the great Nexus community, what's the purpose of flashing ROMs when the device runs perfect out the box?

Root is a must for me since it allows you to get rid of some unwanted Google Apps (eg Google+, Google Play Games etc), use a Adblocker and special Apps like eg Titanium Backup or LMT
Custom roms, with the exception of a select few, have always been highly overrated imo. Most of them take software that is already created, debloat it (which we can do ourselves) and add some features that anyone can get through xposed, etc.
I used to always laugh when people would jump in a rom thread with outrageous claims like their battery life doubled, it's 100x smoother than stock, etc. Placebo effect runs high on custom roms imo.
With that being said, I've flashed just as many roms as most of you. I still see the value in some of them.
But as other people have said, it's just not as necessary anymore. As long as you can root, you can debloat, add xposed if you wanted, etc.
Doesn't seem to make as big of a difference as before.
Yeah it's not how it used to be and that probably for the better, most anything you could want can be done through Xposed and a custom kernel. While most custom roms are more stable than they were in the early days(seems to have more to do with a more stable aosp), there isn't much incentive and there are often still bugs. It's not because devs are bad at what they do, but building a stable rom requires a team of people and testing environments that people just don't have at home. Early in the days of windows mobile and Android roms were very poorly optimised out of the box, but it'd not really like that anymore.
