Do we really need to root right now? - T-Mobile HTC One (M7)

So I've been debating if to root or not for a couple of days now, I just got the phone last week, so I'm still getting used to sense 5.
Now heres what I ask myself, knowing that the development for our specific device is a bit slow, and flashing one of the international roms will make us loose some key features (like wifi calling).
It has me thinking what would be the real benefit to root out device right now?

If you have to ask, then don't root.
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium

Bingo. Don't root without a compelling reason.

Im still not rooted and I have not missed it that much,
When AOSP gets stable on this phone however I will probably root and try it out and see If I prefer it over sense

i will be getting mine today, and i will root right away, mainly because i want to use the htc logo as a menu button and disable those three dots

I rooted mine day one (I got mine the day they released last month)
I am running a great ROM and I dont regret rooting one bit, it was totally worth it for the ROM that I am using right now. I still have WiFi calling and more.

Which Rom are you using?
And what features does it have if you don't mind me asking.

It has the latest HTC build for this phone, that includes better camera and GPS fixes and better response with the touch buttons. The phone seems snappier and it has better battetylife and it has no more bloat and in benchmarks I score higher now. I can install adaway on my phone now. And more will be in the 8.0 release. I also like the mods (like the percentage battery mod)

From what I've read none of the international roms have wifi calling....
I mean I know I can flash custom kernels and get certain things like HTC2menu or back2menu...
But as far as roms I thought they werent none out for us specifically right now... Or maybe I'm mistaken...

I have rooted every phone I've owned within 3 days of getting it. However, ive had my one for two weeks now and honestly I don't have a compelling reason to root. Bloat? Virtually non-existent. And what is there is "freezable" within the stock rom. Sense5 is remarkably robust, fast, and solid.
But that's just me.

I've been wanting to root but haven't yet. Only thing I want is WiFi tether and HTC button to work as menu key.

To me, I have to root HTC one due to annoyances. Don't get me wrong, sense is neat... But 3 dot menu bar needs to go, GPS indicator in the status bar is too clunky, and power saver message that won't go away??! If those things were different, I wouldn't root.

Gotta have Root for Me
There are alot of reasons for root for some users, and for some not so much. It is always one of the first things I do. You can have root and keep a stock ROM it just gives you options, and when you get bored with stock these amazing cooks on XDA always have something brewing for you to check out. Some of my reasons to root specific to the HTC One on TMO.
Flash a writable kernel so my system files are now writable. Currently using Bulletproof.
DoubleTap2Wake so I don't have to bang on the IR blaster all day. HTC buttons don't like to be used, they always end up failing or plain falling out.
got rid of the 3 button menu bar and now have the HTC Logo as the menu button. Sweeet!
Makes it easier to back up and restore. I use several devices so I can Box my Titanium files and quickly be in the same position across whatever device I decide to use at the time.
Customization. blue % battery mod, transparent app drawer, transparent blinkfeed clock. I can do custom icons and get rid on annoying ones likd NFC or GPS.
The most important is to beat the stupid enterprise settings on exchange. I have to have email on my device, but i cant stand using a PIN or Pattern. solution=root!

Root to use your Playstation 3 controller. =.3
That's the main reason. And there's a MOD that lets you map the HTC button. That's pretty cool. (Not to repeat what others have already stated)
Also, how important is WiFi Calling? People seem to really want that. I haven't used it. LoL!! I'm guessing it's good for those that travel a lot?

WiFi calling is pretty important to me, mainly because where I work I have zero signal but do have access to wifi (I'm right underneath the access point, which is nice).
Some people depend on it at home as well, such as my boss' son.
As far as root goes....I haven't rooted yet, I just haven't felt the need to.

Only reason I rooted was to use my MOGA Pro as a regular gamepad. Now I'm running rooted stock ROM and cruising through FF7 in an emulator during my train commute

I am rooted running the ARHD 7.4 ROM with WiFi calling. It works great. Rooting allows me to use titanium backup for all my apps. Also making onandroid backups. And lots of little changes. Remove bloated apps, etc

HTC launcher has to reload after exiting apps! Please help!

Is anyone else having this issue? Whenever I exit an app and go to the home screen, I have to wait for the home screen to load up again. EVERY TIME!
Could it be the stock task manager closing the launcher? Also can I put it on the ignore list, because I didn't see an option for that.
If anyone knows how to get rid of this inconvenience, please let me know. Thanks.

That used to happen on my EVO Shift all the time after gingerbread was released. Decreasing the number of widgets helped back then. Hopefully this is an issue that will be addressed as I have seen it mentioned a couple times.
To fix it on the Shift if you were rooted you could download an app called AutoKiller Memory Optimizer and change some setting. I can't remember since all the custom roms I used made the change. Maybe it would work in this case as well. I think the memory management section is what helped. The presets HTC uses are aggressive I think and kill off the Launcher to free up more memory before it's really needed. The app isn't really a task killer but more of an app you can use to tweak the point at which the phone starts freeing up memory.
It's happened to me after using the phone for a while. Noticed this after WiFi at home is not connected and been using the world's fastest way to get frustrated, using 3g service. What I've done is restart the phone and works excelent. Don't think that's he right answer but it's been working.

My phone randomely does this as well...I dont understand why since it has plenty of horsepower and I dont run any heavy widgets..they def need to release an update to address these issues as well as the multitasking issues..two things that my older evos had no issue with
One app that bugged my phone was McAfee security, uninstalled and runs more smoothly. Have had all 3 EVO phones and same thing, one app running on background takes up to much memory.

there is a fix for this in the one x forums somewhere. you have to modify and recompile some system files if you are rooted. I am not rooted, and I hate this. sense 4 is seriously hog-party sloppy
there is a way to fix it if you are rooted,
what you are doing in esense is keeping the launcher from being dropped in the menory and making it a pryority app
In terminal emulator:
type
Code:
su
Then type
Code:
echo ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 >> /data/local.prop
and enter
Then reboot.

Been a known and frustrating problem with sense for some time.
Take a look at the last post on this thread is you want all the links that discuss this.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1680020
Problem started on my OG EVO a few months ago and was right back on the LTE. From reading the threads it looks like it is worse on the LTE for a lot of people. I did get a response from HTC to a Facebook post about this, they suggested I take out the battery and wait a bit then put it back in! LOL
What stopped me from going nuts about it and perhaps returning the phone was the Nova launcher which has stopped the problem completely.
Rooting and tweaking of course can solve it as well, but I'm wanting to hold off on that for a bit until we see if any major OTA will be coming out.

Has Verizon or Moto replaced your phone?

I have had many lengthy discussions over the last few weeks with verizon customer support. My intent has been to have them swap my ICS upgraded razr maxx for an non upgraded one. I have not had any luck.
Have you? What tactics/facts supported your needs for the swap? The phone is non functional for my needs now, but verizon wont seem to agree with me.

People need to realize that with you cannot go back to GB from ICS IF you updated your phone with an ICS version >= .8x. Once you have flashed that, you are forever on ICS. This is due to a new bootloader being put onto the RAZR. There is no going back to GB once you've update to ICS version .8x or greater.
Go to one of those used cell shops, they can do it usually, it's how they fix bricked phones, they usually have the Dev software required to do it

First, I've owned the phone since it was released.
Second, If clicking a widget and finding a better alternative to the mediocre stock keyboard is too much trouble to you, then I realize trying to help you is fruitless. First: You expect me to believe you have no experience with the RAZR GB keyboard if you've owned it since its release?
Second: Are you truly claiming that you have the ability to stream embedded flash videos, off of websites, with your DROID RAZR on the stock Verizon ICS release? If so, you have one unique RAZR, as you'd be the only one with the ability to do so.. Adobe Flash streams do not work on our phone with the update... visit the Google Play store and read the RAZR comments on Adobe... It's broken.
Third: If you are the type of consumer that is comfortable with needing to adapt and use alternative methods to use your purchased products as they are intended and advertised, then you are of a unique breed.
I appreciate and expect merchandise to operate as advertised.. I like the items I purchase to remain fully functional.
I haven't even mentioned the issues with the battery, but I'm sure you'd disagree there is anything wrong with cutting down the life of a battery by 40%.. Got an app for that?

Did I say it didn't work? Or did I say it wasn't working as it was before the update?
He probably likes alternative keyboards so wouldn't touch stock, i hate swipe and like the stock ics keyboard.
My friend uses better kb or w/e, there are a few ppl that claim to have flash working on some websites.
And on stock ics my phone chewed through battery.
So root it and use a different cpu governor which will fix it. Custom roms will eventually (they might already) have a 3/4g toggle.
Motorola's ics updates are mostly fine, you should have read the problems ppl were having.
So you can't complain
Nothing isn't perfect, and i wouldn't expect stock to be as good as this, if flash worked fine, this would be one of the few phones i'd recommend to anyone AND it will not require they come see me to "set there phone up"

But let's start with the wifi reminder in the notification area.. Do you like to see it there constantly?
I like to use different apps in multi window.. Gmail.. YouTube... Would you like to have additional ones?
Either way it's a great phone and stock is solid... A few more bells & whistles for the rooted ppl...

Honestly I kept my Note 2 stock unrooted for a while, at least until Scott released CleanRom. I was perfectly happy with unrooted and heck a lot of times I flash it back to stock unrooted relocked for a few days. To me The only reasons to root are wifi tether, and with a toggle widget you can use the hotspot unrooted.
I still use CleanRom Ace though. Going to see what kind of battery life the new kernel gives

I also upgraded from a rooted Thunderbolt (put it back to stock yesterday just for the experience) a week ago and rooted my GNII the next day. agreed. My main reasons:
Titanium Backup
Root Explorer
full access for Lightflow
Root Call Blocker Pro (to replace the deleted-by-Verizon call/text blocking function)
get rid of WiFi nag notification
use any app in the multi window function
customized toggles
WiFi hotspot
turn off shutter sounds on camera
Otherwise, my phone is mostly stock (running CleanRom 1.0, which is basically stock with a few of these mods)
happy happy happy
No need for for me to root, the main reason I root is for battery percent and that is possible to do while not rooted. Adfree messes with some of the websites I mainly use so no thanks for that.
Another reason why is because I like to be able to get OTA updates and install them without wiping the phone.

Since you have the Verizon GN2, I'm surprised you're ok with what they've done. Doesn't the persistent WiFi notification bother you? How about the lack of all of the available toggles? What really got me was the removal of the stock email widget. It's such a basic feature - it's mind blowing that this isn't available on stock.

Why do you need root so bad ????

Silly question but what's the need to root this phone, is great as it is.
Don't get me wrong, all my past phones were rooted OG Evo, Evo 3d, Evo LTE and now DNA is stock , but rooting seems unnecessary really.
If it's not broken why fix it.
Not fixing but enhancing. The phone is great as is... Adding in a few tweaks can only make it better plus the option to have the latest without waiting on slow big red... That's why I can't wait to root this bad boy.

I agree with the op on my old phone I needed root and had mods and roms installed but this phone is so good as it is I have left it completely stock.

Being able to flash custom edits (no more wireless charging pop up!), user a custom recovery where I can make full nandroid backups, and titanium backup of all my apps are the big ones for me. Also custom splash screen (that default HTC screen lights up my whole house) as well as boot / down animations is something love. I was making custom boot animations and hacking my old moto razr era flip phone back in the day.
Oh, and we'll probably get a ported sense 5 way before it comes from Verizon.

I personally cannot tolerate the default LCD Density. I got the DNA the day it came out, and I had to wait a few days before I could root it (locked bootloader wasn't cracked yet)... Longest few days of my life.

I can't wait to get rid of the bloatware and get my inverted apps back.
I don't need ROOT I need the bootloader unlocked so I can flash custom recoveries which leads to custom ROMs.
Example:
So when HTC says oh sorry we can't upgrade you to Sense 5 because you don't have an IR blaster I say thats ok because Newtoroot already has a Sense 5 ROM that I've been using LONG before HTC decided they weren't going to upgrade me.
With a good ROM you ALMOST don't need root.
exactly

Yea, I know, and I am very thankful of that. However, in most cases (if we get an official CM ROM) we can get updates much much sooner than you can with stock. Who knows how long HTC/Verizon will make us wait for 4.2.
For me, it's wifi tethering. No way big red's getting more money from me than they already do.

I guess you have unlimited, because it doesn't cost anything if you have tiered data.

Why do we need air? lol JK! For me part of the reason is that I love to tinker and strive to make the phone perfect, which theoretically is really impossible thus I always have to tinker! But I enjoy trying out all the cool custom ROMs and kernels to find what suits my needs best. RIght now I'm UV by 100 and UC 10 1.24 and it still runs as smooth as stock (though obviously my qudrant score has dropped from 8200 to 7100). I have unlimited data, so WiFi tether is a huge bonus. And getting rid of all the annoying icons (GPS reticle, etc). And as awesome as HTC's weather clock widget is, the transparent one in the Viper ROM is the most gorgeous widget ever to me.
All that being said, and there are not many, the DNA is an Android phone I would recommend stock to people.
I'm actually surprised its taking this long to get the ROM going on the DNA. Not that I have any idea of the amount of work that must go into doing something like this, but these guys that are much smarter than me usually have these things out very quickly. In the past it always seems like there is that group of developers that are trying to be the fist to crack/hack/unlock anything that comes out.
There are plenty of ROMs for the DNA man...check the android development section for the DNA...

For me, I can't wait to kill that damn annoying Droid bootsplash with the loud noise!
I forgot how annoying it was on my old unlocked one. The screen on that one shattered and my new one has the OTA.

I have to say I agree with shayne....The offset for lte is development which for the i527 will never go anywhere will Knox and all the att bootloader crap...If you can live without lte the i9205 is much faster and smoother than the att megas I've played with and you'll have at least ssome dev support.

i am on conbtract and i am not.
i have 4 phones on my acct with AT&T, obviously 1 was for upgrade. i am on the Next program with this one and my 14 day trial ends today.
i have unlimited data grandfathered and wouldnt want to lose that.
and others are right too, in the sense that any other phone is going to be smaller. how can i go back? even my Note seems like a Pez dispenser compared to this thing.
i like it, i just want to do stuff with it.............you know

I'm in the same boat with grandfathered unlimited data plan...honestly the mega is sick...and if you root your i527 and put setcpu on it you'll see a massive improvement. I think shayne is testing out the settings I run mine on with stock kernel. Just keep it and see how it goes. I'm a huge tinkerer and dev, working in a custom kernel for the mega and still run rooted stock that I themed with xposed and wanam, combined with max clock it's as near as a custom rom as you'd want, with all the stability and speed of a rom. If you just download xposed and wanam the amount of customizations are literally endless.
Mega
Also tinted status bar module is dope ...any color you want upon opening any app you want ...but I won't post 100 pics lol

Are you running the ATT version also?
I have often wondered in my 100's of flashes I have done, is it the custom rom that is necessary, or can I get all tge tweaks I really need just by using the Xposed Module.
I do like the phone alot, but I have held off on the root until I decided to keep and I feel I have read enough about it. As Shayne knows, I can really EFF things up if I want too.
In the past with Xposed, I have had reasonable success in modding, of course it could have been me or conflicting options on phone. Does it seem to be fully functional with rooted Mega?

I've thought about selling my i9205 to get something newer but its grown on me. But 400 dollars sounds nice too ha. Xposed will hold you off for a bit capt

Not with the mega...i have a note 3 n900a att...at least for me, I still try rom, and help some of my friends develop them but I pretty much stopped doing full devs of roms since all the tweaks you'd want can be done to stock with xposed and now wanam, plus stock rom stability. I really only build kernels and flash kernels and theme or tweak my own stock builds. Always heavily themed, sometimes I do some xml or build prop alterations...but since 4.2 I've run pretty much stock with tweaks as I've found it generally faster, smoother and more stable...Especially with certain kernels. And I have to say for a stock kernel the mega has a great one, and is really streamlined and efficient in the source code.
stick with your megas fellas trust me I have several devices l around and I always go back to my mega
(Even changed my xda handle lol)
Mega
---------- Post added at 03:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:41 PM ----------
And just for the sake of clarity...everything I do, or other devs do either can be done, or is actually done thru xposed and the subsequent modules...so yes you can do everything I woukd do building you a rom in xposed, minus say deodexing or other tweak, which these days with the new krait chips is really unnecessary tbh. The chips are so powerful and efficient in the mega and the quad version of it in the note 3 don't need or show really any noticeable gains by many of the old tricks anymore. So my 2 cents on it...keep the mega, it's the best all round device I own, and by far my favorite. Run xposed, and wanam and I can almost guarantee you won't be missing a single thing.
Mega
I haven't used Xposed, but I'm pretty darn happy with the Mega stock rom. I'm running 4.4 on my captivate and my asus tf300t. The 4.4 is nice and smooth and small! I'm sure we will see a 4.4 update eventually for the mega. Google's ART feature is still very experimental, once they get that matured and implemented in their 4.4 builds, I'm sure even light weight devices will see the performance benefits.
Having root and being able to remove bloat was a big bonus for me. If I like themed roms, I would most certainly play with Xposed. The battery life on this Mega is something wonderful! Worth keeping the phone just for that reason.
Actually, after rooting and removing ATT and Samsung bloat, I am pretty happy with stock. I alternate between Nova and everything.me launchers.
Believe me, I have been a flashing addict. I have tried every rom available for my 3yo Nook Color, Captivate, Infuse, Note 1 and Nexus 7. And I have tested roms for 4 different Devs.
I find it's refreshing for everything on my phone to work without having to use a third party app (although it is boring)!!! I'm keeping my Mega, but I will probably never use ATT again, unless all the other carriers start locking their phones also.

Im in the same page here.. if rooting works for me is more than enough. I have removed all the "junk" apps and im happy with the stability of the mega and software. Yes is nice to use different roms and have options but at the end of the road as long as there are ways to "personalization" of the mega software im happy. I might miss the kernel abilities.. specially overclocking...
I appreciate the feedback folks and I am in. Stability is the key and I have experience with multiple device. Trusted advice is a valuable thing to and I beleive that is what I am getting here.
I now only need to find the trusted files and instructions on rooting this thing. I think I found them last night, around p40 in the "bounty for root" thread. However, I have always been hesitant about going into build prop and making changes. So I guess I need to read more.
Thanks again folks, ill be around.

With root, exposed, wanam, and nova launcher, I am happier with this phone then I ever was with my note1 or 2. I will still push for a way to flash but funny thing is, I probably would stick with the setup I have now. I guess it's a matter of knowing I could flash if I wanted but No, I don't think I need it or would even use it. What's wrong with me, wanting something, I don't think I will ever use?

Kingoapp.com is the easiest method I have used....ever....bar none!!!!
I may have told you this before, but I went to manage apps and looked at every app....if it gives you the option to "turn off", then you should be able to delete without any problems. I've never had the balls to delete any thing else....
az probably has a complete list of what can be deleted.

This. Once we got root and I used Xposed I'm happy as hell. I just want to be able to flash **** that I'm never gonna use.
Go to kingo and download the app on your pc...its a one click root system for a myriad of devices including the mega i527. I used it on my note 3 n900a with locked bootloader without issue. Enjoy
Mega
We should make a comprehensive list of **** that we have turned off
And another of the mods that we have done
For me I always wanted the clock in the middle with wanam I have it, also changed the battery and some other icons as well so for now even though I can't flash I am sticking with the Mega
