Unable to use Odin - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

My Samsung Galaxy Note II (Verizon) won't show up in Odin. I've installed the samsung drivers but its doesn't recognize the phone. I can go into download mode on my phone, but I'm stuck in a boot loop. What can I do? Any help is much appriciated

I'm having the same issue on Windows 8 64 bit. I had all drivers in place and everything worked perfect. Usb MTP and PTP, in both regular and usb debugging modes. Adb worked and Odin worked. I unlocked a Note 2 for a buddy using the updated casual (as of 5/3) method. I had issues with Casual that I could only fix by uninstalling my drivers and allowing it to install it's own. Now when I connect my rooted Note or any Note, the computer can only see the phone in Camera (PTP) WITHOUT Usb debugging on. The computer can't see it in any other mode. No adb or odin.
I've uninistalled the drivers, reinstalled them, installed Kies, used another Note 2 tool and allowed it to install the drivers. Uninstalled them and let the computer decide which drivers. Every time I get the same result. I can only see the phone in Camera mode without debugging on.
Any help would be appreciated!

I had a similar problem with my Note 2, and eventually had to use a different computer.

USB Debgging Mode
Yeah, I am having the a same problem. Although I rooted my i605 and had the TWRP Recover, decided to go back to stock using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2040264 . Well Verizon sent an OTA last night and I clicked update on accident, and now it is in a boot loop. I can get into download mode but odin does not see the device, I am almost positive that this is because I cannot put the device into USB Debugging Mode.
More research is need for now, but your sounds like the same thing.

That has got to be the problem. Is there any way to turn on debugging mode even with a looping boot? It was on before this problem occured, but it must have been switched at some point when I tried to root.

Usb debugging and download are different modes. I've odin'ed countless times. The problem is in the drivers. I'm still tinkering but cant get them to see the device.

Believe me I am very new to this but extremely tech savvy, I have spent almost all of my work day searching XDA and numerous other sites and I have not found a way.
Unfortunately this is on me i know after i rooted and loaded the Jedi ROM, that I had set the updates to stop, but I guess I forgot to when I "unrooted". Oh well you live you learn, that's how I started on computers back in the day, break it and fix it all day long, lol

I've exhausted everything I can think of. I'm about ready to try my old W7 computer and if that fails, I'll go back to XP.

OP, will you update the title with "Unable to use Odin (Driver Issue)" to hopefully draw attention of a developer or someone with more knowledge. As stated, it'll quickly be dismissed as a noob problem where it is very clearly not at this point.

Josh I cannot help but think that if these two do not go hand in hand then why would every instructable on this advise to first set USB Debugging Mode to On, then reboot to download mode??
Like I said I am new to this and do my research before hacking anything up, so i may be incorrect.

If you're using an automated program to hack your phone then usb debugging is required so it can send adb commands to the phone telling it to reboot to download mode. However, without usb debugging enabled, you can power off and manually boot to download mode and Odin will work all the same.
Most tutorials and tools are noob friendly and it's easier for them to send the "adb reboot bootloader" command then to instruct the user to do it manually.
I've been rooting since the HTC Eris so I'm no noob. I'm not a developer either but I'm 99.9% sure the problem is driver related.

Interesting, thanks for schooling me! Now I am completely lost!!!

I have 2 perfectly fine Note 2's in my hand (both rooted and rom'ed) and can't get my computer to recognize either accept for in a Camera mode without usb debugging enabled.
Let's try to get a common ground here. When did everyone unlock their bootloaders? More specifically, when did you use Adam Outler's (big props to that guy) tool on your computer?
I just plugged my Note 2 in my work computer with usb debugging enabled and it sees it perfectly. So something driver related is messed up on my computer.

Actually that's why I Un-Rooted mine, I used Adams Method and the loaded the Jedi ROM, when I connected it to the pc after after a couple days it would only recognize as PTP not MTP?!? This was only with USB Debugging Mode enabled, if I turned it off it did not recognize it at all. So I decided to Un-root the device, then a week later I get the OTA and selected update and now it is dead

Where is he? The issue is probably with the driver. He can connect and go to device manager. He'll have to open up some of the universal serial bus and see what the computer recognizes the phone as. If you can't tell, unplug it and see which on the list goes away. Re-plug if it comes back, update drivers with the Samsung drivers. That should put him back in business (you too).

And you're in Odin? It should be a Samsung Composite or Fastboot Device or something of that nature. I don't think it should see your phone as a phone in Odin. Have you tried changing the drivers or just uninstalling/reinstalling?

I have tried everything please help

Computer wont recognize my device anymore. I have downloaded every set of drivers from this forum, from the samsung website, I even tried downloading kies but it wouldnt recognize it either.
It worked before I did the following and now it doesnt.
First I rooted my phone with route 66 everything was going fine until I made the huge mistake (not knowing) and downloaded rom manager so that I could do a nandroid backup. Well as we all know now, you cant do that. So I got the deadly uellow verizon triangle saying unauthorized software bring it to the store. So I went through the xda forums and found the one that told me how to fix it. I used odin with the alternate restore and got it back up and running. So I wanted to go back and use adams one click unlock and root. I got everything downloaded and ready. I put my phone in developer mode and plugged it in. It starts trying to find the drivers and then it flips from debugger mode to media mode everytime. It starts seeing it as everything but a samsung phone. It says found camera and even cd rom but not the phone. I have read through everything and tried everything I could think of but I am at a loss. PLEASE HELP

I tried that, it is still not seeing it like it is supposed to. I was able to get Odin to recognize it so that I could flash the rooted stock again but I can't get Casual Jailbreak to work. I'm not sure if it is because the drivers or not but I am guessing it has something to do with it. Every time I plug it in, it starts searching for drivers and then always switches from usb debugging mode to media mode. The checkmark is still in usb debugging but I don't think it actually is. You can watch it go from device as installer to media.
Are you using the driver install app (zadig i think its called) to install the heimdall driver on top of "gadget serial". Looking at your other post it seems like a driver issue. One thing ive noticed is, if odin can see the device then heimdalll cant and vice/versa. So if odin can see it you have the wrong driver, if you are infact installing the heimdall driver my second question is, does windows xp x64 use driver sig enforcement like win7 x64 does? if so you probably need to disable it. Just throwing my $0.02 out there.
Are you using the official USB cable? I had an aftermarket cable that had worked for months, then decided to quit working. It works with other devices just not the Note2. Changed to my original cable and all is well.

Also try plugging it in to the PC and not through a hub/keyboard/monitor port

If it sees the device in the dumb verizon cd mode thing and ptp than it can see adb. Its not the cable. however i would try setting the usb debugging first than set it to camera mode. adb should still be able to pick it up

No data/odin won't recognize and can't connect to computer

I flashed up to 4.2.2 the newest 2,2 Liquidsmooth rom, didn't like it, so I wen't to flash back to 4.1 jellybeans build 13. I wiped everything, from, factory, cache/dalvik 3 times and then flashed. I loaded it up and it was buggy, so I wiped and reflashed again, and like the last time I have no signal and my phone no longer connects to my computer. Everytime I plug it in it says installing drivers but it will never connect. I get a message saying there is nothing on my computer to detect my phone even though it could 20 minutes ago. I have an odin stock file I wan't to flash but can't as odin won't recognize it. It makes a sound upon being plugged into my computer and shows up under device manager saying drivers are all up to date but I still get nothing. I can still use twrp though etc. What do I do?
Good luck dude I can't even root my new note because of this issue

I feel lucky that I rooted my phone as soon as i got it and everything went successful. Because like 3 days later my phone stops communicating with the computer...
Thankfully I have a micro sd card so i can do flashable zips... But if I ever have to Odin back to stock or use Odin for anything I'm screwed.
From what I've read it isn't a phone issue is a Windows issue? But I don't know if that's true because i have yet to find a fix...

Thanks! Simple, but it worked for me, too. Took about 2 seconds to find it and install it.
Windows did need to update a driver first on its own so that it would have something to update. Otherwise you may not get the Update driver option when you right click the driver in Device Manager.
Something like this:
1. Connect the phone in the mode (phone on, or phone in download mode) that isn't working
2. Start/Right click Computer/Properties/Device Manager
3. Right click on Android or Samsung drivers that appear
4. Choose Update Driver, Browse computer for drivers, Pick from a list on my computer
5. Click on the most promising looking drivers that come up until one works

I have read and read....googled and youtube just about everything to get my note 3 AT&T rerooted! AT&T had an update on Friday 2-28-14 over the air. i noticed it was updating while i was at work. when it was done it removed my root by Kingo. I have tried like most of you numerous times with no success. I took the advise from this thread and used Vroot it took about 96 seconds and Bam....rooted! then i followed the instructions on this link ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2532818 ) and now I'm done! THANKS!!!!!!!! hope this helps. I did this on my mac through parallels 9 my device is note 3 SM-N900A 4.3 build N900AUCBNB4
I had the same problem as everyone else. Odin would not recognize my note 2 (Windows 7) or acknowledge that it was connected. I got the correct drivers to load by going to USB options on the phone and checking Connect as: Media Device (MTP) while connected to the PC. Windows automatically installed the drivers. I then shutdown my device, put it in download mode, and Odin recognized it and I was able to flash.

Make Odin Recognize Note 2
1. Open Odin
2. Get Samsung Note into Odin Mode (on off state, hold down volume down, home, and then power button)
3. Plug in to USB
4. If it doesn't recognize your device, take out battery (keep it plugged in!), wait a few seconds and put battery back in
5. Odin should now see your phone under ID:COM

Not adb connection or odin

So im trying to root my new s4 and after installing the latest Samsung drivers adb will not find my s4 or s3, and odin same thing. Ive updated sdk and not sure where to go from this point... Any ideas?

I'll assume that you have also enabled USB debugging (just want to ensure )
try
Code:
adb kill-server
if that doesn't work if you hadn't already rebooted I would try that.
if that didn't work try another usb port/cable

i have never had any problems with any USB cable i've used, but it doesnt hurt to give it a try. Maybe you'll find it is the cable's problem.

i had a problem with a driver just going kapoot on my recently. i tried uninstalling and reinstalling, still no good. i removed all other drivers and software that i thought may be related to the problem, but the problem still persisted.
in the end, i just backed up all my important data to an external HDD and did a complete restore of Windows 7. All my problems were gone. I'm not saying this is what you should do or that this is your only options, but what I am saying is you could always restore to this.

I had the same issue and found that after plugging into my laptop where I initially rooted, the phone wanted me to allow USB debugging from my desktop; perhaps I had never done so in the first place...
Anyway, long press on home button and see if maybe you just need to find the notification, as I understand it can get buried under everything and not pop up...
Other than that, I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe try the universal ADB driver from the folks at CWM?

Also, remove all your samsung drivers and try the universal adb driver from CWM.

i605 Note 2 to PC will not connect.

hey everyone, so ive have went thru all the threads i can find, done alot of research and have come up short. seems like alot of the users with the Verizon I605 Samsung Note 2 have the same problem, not connecting to their PC's.
-ive restarted both my note 2 and my PC numerous times.
-ive installed/uninstalled/re-installed the official Samsung website device drivers
-tried other USB ports
-tried up to 4 different USB/Mini USB cords
-made sure USB debugging was switched on
-Tried Samsung Kies, come to find out it doesn't support the I605 Note 2
-called Verizon and Samsung directly and both actually offered me a position as a tech after i told them all the things i did to figure it out, because it was way more then they could handle.
i know it has connected before, as i have done it once or twice a few weeks back but now it wont connect, drivers fail to install, and nothing else works. i have also tried every other method mentioned in the other threads. nothing has worked.
is there any fix for this? was it cause by the latest update?
im running 4.1.2/ VRAMC3
and im using Windows 7
please anyone lmk if there is a fix for this. ive exhausted all avenues known to me. thanks in advance.
Happened to me too, it's USB port in your computer. If you have any other computer or laptop try using that.
You can also try wireless connection for file transfer.

Hope you found your answer. If not have this moved. This was posted in the sprint version of the note 2 forums.

The appropriate forum would probably be more helpful.
Plus, are you getting any error messages? I've had issues with connecting the Sprint GN2. If I install the Samsung Drivers, I get a "Missing Hardware ID" error. I just found it's better not to install drivers. Let Windows install what drivers it can. Not all the drivers will install and will get an error message about device not successfully installed. But enough install that the GN2 will connect so you can move files around for MTP. See a thread I did back in December, linky
Also, you can try out SG Flash Drive Enabler. I've tried it out. It works pretty well. It has quirks, but does allow you to use your SDHC card as a flash drive. You have to use the MTP to access the phone's storage.
oh man...*face palm* sorry about posting in the wrong forum guys, i was about to crash and i didn't even realize. my mad.
MODS: please move this to the correct Forum section at your earliest convenience, thanks :silly:
i have found that airdroid does work for wifi file transfers for such things as pictures, music...etc. but im wanting to root my note 2 and it needs a direct line from the phone to the pc to work.
ill check out those links posted up and see what how it goes. but we still need a fix for this. kinda lame only (well most) the verizon SN2 is having this problem.

You may want to use ToolKit. I believe it's setup for AT&T tool. Uninstall KIES and all the samsung driver on the your PC. Choose to have ToolKit install the drivers. It should get your enough connection for ADB to work and be able to root and install a custom recovery. I had to use it a couple days ago to get a custom recovery back on the GN2 and I was getting the Missing Hardware ID error and still worked.

Ive done that very process. Uninstalled kies and installed the toolkit drives. Some reason it would sort of connect but then disconnect. Never stayed on and wasnt able to be picked up as connected on the Odin program.

I had a problem in windows 7 where it would connet to Windows update and try to get drivers for everything once they were connected. I turned off windows looking at windows update for drivers, uninstalled the driver for the phone, then installed Samsung's drivers. my phone showed up in windows again. now im able to get to both sd cards.. did you try that?

where did you go on windows 7 to turn off the above mentioned? the middle part confuses me a bit. so your saying you turned off the windows feature to look for driver updates when the phone is connected via USB?
if you dont mind, please walk me thru your process. thanks in advance.

Kies was un-installed per instuctions on the toolbox. i guess i could try and re-install it and retry everything.
EDIT: just remembered that Kies dosnt support the Verizon Note 2....lame sauce.

i am going to try to download a older driver that was working before and see if that works. its linked near the bottom of the above posted link in one of the replies. ill come back with results.
ok so i downloaded the samsung drivers version 1.4.6.0 and followed the directions on the link i provided above. the drivers installed successfully, but the CASUAL(R515b) No You Verizon! program doesn't seem to see the phone connected to the computer. and just continually loops. sigh...this is getting to get stupid. such a simple task yet its not connecting.
EDIT: the drivers SAY they have installed successfully, but the computer still doesn't recognize the phone is connected. even reads on the phone that the software wasnt found to connect to the computers, and the CASUAL program also tells me that the phone isnt connected....sigh...seriously....WTF.
When you install your driver's on your pc you need to restart your pc...have you tryed that?

While Kies does not officially support the VZW Note 2 it is the only way me and my friends can get our PCs to see our Note 2s, that's the only reason I ask and it is usually par for course. Its what's suggested in these cases if it isn't already installed. It can hurt to give it a shot and see if it helps anything, if not you can just uninstall it again.
Also check out the OP in this thread:

ive redownloaded it, so ill give it another try. are you saying just have it downloaded and then do nothing with it? or do you somehow get it to connect? i mean just having it as a presents on the computer to have something else connect seems odd to me but hell im down for whatever at this point. ima load it up now and try.

Please help! Sudden brick :(

I have a note 2 rooted and on jellybean rom. I never took any update. My phone won't boot up or get into recovery. I can get into download mode but I can't get Odin to work. I've tried different USB ports and cables (have not tried different computers yet). When I plug in cable and phone to pc or outlet it gets stuck on the battery logo and circle. When I try to get into recovery it displays Samsung name off and on. I'm trying Odin back to stock but like I said it won't see my phone when connected. I will get a new cable ASAP to see if that makes a difference. I have pulled battery sim and sd several times to no avail. I will leave them out for the night and try again tomorrow. Anyone else have any suggestions? Thanks ! I really appreciate it !

looks like you've gone through most of the steps. Have you tried reinstalling the samsung drivers? Plug it in and let it charge for a few hours? Maybe the battery is too low.
Thanks for your suggestion! I have reinstalled the drivers and restarted PC already. Last night I left battery sim and sd card out but today I will leave it charged for a few hours to see if it changes. I have also ordered an new OEM charger and battery to see if that helps. I am currently transferring all files and programs for returning it to stock to my sd card so I can try it on a different PC. I will keep you posted as to my progress. Thank you so much for your help!!

Hello,
I see that you state you can not get into recovery mode, But can you get it into download mode. If so you maybe able to use adb and push the pit file to it and then install the stock rom again.

I'm unfamiliar with the steps I need to take to do adb. I've only used Odin but to update my progress or lack thereof, I am still unable to get Odin (either version) to communicate with my phone when it is connected. I have tried both my pcs (they worked in the past). I have tried different USB cables and ports. Do you know the steps I need to take to use adb? I will google it and see what I find. I will update soon. Thanks again for your help!

If you phone will not connect with your computer in download mode as well as recovery mode. I do not think there is much you can do other then see if you can get it replaced. I had have run into an issue like this before. Once I was able to get into download mode and push out the stock recovery onto the phone. But if it will not go into download mode as well there is not much I think you can do.
It will go into download mode. When connected to the pc Odin won't see it. Do you think using adb would be pointless at this point? I have not used a new USB cable so I wanted to wait at least for that to arrive along with an OEM battery I ordered to see if that helps any or is that pointless as well? Also does it matter where you store Odin on your pc ? (Internal vs on a sd card? Thanks for your help ! I may just need to send it in but wanted to try everything I could come up with.

I would first try the new cable and but it into download mode and try to push the pit file that is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207
I would try to follow the un-root section I know there is a lot of issue with the note 2 and updates or unrooting where it will not find the recovery because when you use Cause it moves the location of it. This might help. good luck.
I have my new battery. Just waiting on the cables

Sounds, Like a bad EMMC, If Your Phone doesn't get in to recovery and if it wont get recognized by Odin. Try updating the drivers, than Try Flashing back to the First firmware that came with the note II which is 4.1.1 So Try it, If it doesn't work like that, than it's indeed a bad EMMC on the board. Good luck my Friend!

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm already on 4.1.1. I've never updated my note 2. I have updated drivers (although I can't find it in device manager but I've indeed downloaded it via my pc not via phone/ cable) I'm hoping its not a had EMMC because I don't know what that is but it sounds like that would make it a hardware issue correct? I'm hoping its just bad cables (I have old cables) and a bad battery (I still have the original battery on moderate to heavy usage) but recently became second device when I got note 3 (just in time lol)
Edit: is it still necessary to flash 4.1.1 if I'm already on it ? Thanks again!
