In general, battery on the GS4 is great. One thing I and a friend have noticed is that even without touching the Maps app, navigation, or really anything Map related, our Maps battery usage shows between 12-20% across a day. Any idea what is going on there? Google Services is the only non-Screen item above it, at around 20-25% as well, but that seems more reasonable.

In my experience, it might be Google Now doing a little bit of over work if you're doing some traveling...
If you go into the Google Maps settings, make sure location sharing and location history are off. If they're on, it will rack up battery usage while the phone is on.
Note, this will disable a couple things in Google Now, but it still does everything I need.

Make sure to disable google latitude location if enabled.
go into Maps, settings, uncheck "Report from this device"
Thanks, trying those out. I want to make sure I don't disable Google Now though so I will see what happens.
It's probably just downloading all the maps info for your area. If it's still sucking up that much battery a week later, then worry.
And yes, turning those off does disable the location-based alerts in Now.
I think caching was the answer. Didn't even see it register today with all GPS options on.

What do you mean caching? I have it set to wifi only and there are no checkboxes in this section of the maps app.
I got my Verizon S4 at launch and went on vacation. I went to bed with the battery in the upper 90%s and woke up 7hrs later with the battery at 65%. Does this mean the maps app was downloading the maps around my area while I was sleeping?

turning both off will help with battery life, but enabling it is required for "location based" cards in google now. Things like Places near by, weather, public transits around you, all require those location options to be enabled. Problem is, once they are enabled, especially the Report from This Device option, the phone constantly wakes up and checks its location. It's a huge drain on battery.

I already did my research on this and found that people on older devices had this issue. I had this issue on my DNA today and it was eating up close to 30 percent of my battery. So much so that I was at 70 percent after 3-4 hours off the charger. I disabled everything I could related to location and it was still running. Eventually I cleared cache and reset the settings, still nothing. Uninstalled the most recent update and went back to "factory" and all is good.
Just posting this up for anyone else who has been experiencing the same thing.

Yeah, google maps does stay on pretty much all the time. However, according to Gsam, it only eats up about 2% of battery for me. Not sure why yours is chowing down that much battery. Do you use lattitude, I know that is a real battery drainer.

No sir, havent used latitude. It started when I installed widgetsoids for some reason. Uninstalled, stopped maps and did a reboot and maps was still going. Odd for sure. But it hasnt started back up since I uninstalled the update. I may reinstall them just to see if it was the cause.

That would be interesting to know. You can also use better battery stats (there's a free version posted somewhere on XDA) to help find the offending app causing the drain.
Did you per chance set up traffic on Google now? I had and found it pretty much left maps running all the time. I disabled that and haven't had an issue since

Is there a way to convert the Maps app to downloadable and then uninstall it and then install it directly from the market to see if that fixes any issues? I heard that might be beneficial, too. I'm not sure though. >_<

I was having this issue a while back and was finally able to resolve it after turning off most of the location services in the Maps settings. I read somewhere that there is a bug on some HTC devices where Latitute is constantly pinging for location services (but in a way that causes tons of battery drain). My battery wasn't making it until dinner time and now it goes about 24 hours.

I actually did have traffic enabled, I forgot to turn it off when I enabled google now. But this started happening after I had turned off traffic. So far so good, reinstalled the update and it hasn't been running more than 2% today. So what location services do you guys use? Verizon, Google or standalone, I have googles selected and it's only thing related to location that's enabled though so I can get weather.
Try getting a gps lock in maps before you close it. Seems to help me.
I have found that I have less issues with google maps, latitude, and google now, if my GPS has been allowed to turn on and get a GOOD lock. I like to run GPS status to initialize the GPS, and have it create a good GPS database. Seems like once the GPS has had a good lock (after flashing a new rom) then maps etc runs smoother, less wake-locks, and less battery usage.
Yeah If I go into maps, I let it get a lock before exiting, been having good luck so far.

Open maps, let it grab your location and show it on the map then leave it. That way its not searching for your location like it would be if you opened it and closed it before the map showed up.

I only leave Google location services on, never use Verizons, and only use stand alone for navigation, etc.
Ok, ever since the new maps update, it constantly turns itself on. It never use to be a problem before. I've been monitoring with GSam. I don't have anything turned on. Having the same issue since I did a wipe. Last time around in was able to resolve it by disabling location settings in maps. Now that doesn't seem to be working. I'll probably enable everything and run it for awhile and then disable again. I use navigation all the time so I can't disable maps.

For a few days now I've noticed a massive battery drain of Google maps, up to 60 per cent of the battery use, without evening opening the app (must have been running in the background). I have temporarily disabled the app on my phone, but am I the only person with this problem?

Make sure the "Location reporting" (in Google Maps settings) is disabled if you don't want the battery drain. Moreover, Google Now activates the Location reporting so you might have to disable Google Now as well...

I have google now disabled all the time, and the location reporting was unchecked too.. Besides that, even if that had been activated, it shouldn't have taken 60% of my total battery (I had about 70% of my total battery left when I noticed it today), should it?
(...and yes, this one should be in the Q&A section, hadn't thought about that when I posted it though...)
I had the same issue. I turned all location reporting off and turned off Google now, also made sure GPS was off. All that helped a fair amount but Maps still kept running in the background even though I'd never used the app. In the end I used an app called Greenify to hibernate maps and a bunch of other background apps and it made a world of difference. Use wakelock detector to see which apps are causing wakelocks and disable any you don't need running.

Only location service thats working if you have this bug, is gps. Rest of locations services (wifi, mobile newtwork etc.) wont work.
Who couses it? - latest updates for google services.
How to fix it? - atm google is working on fix. There is some type of user fixes you can try. (see post).

Hi, I have a stock i9300, rooted.
About 3 days ago, I noticed that my device, which normally gets through a day comfortably, was running out of juice by early afternoon.
I've checked the data usage meter and it shows that Google Services is doing something with data constantly. It's not a lot of data (500MB over 7 days) but it's enough to keep my "H+" showing data uploading and downloading all the time, which is not normal behaviour.
As a result of this, the battery is running dry. Even when plugged in, the charging isn't keeping up and eventually the battery runs out, and I have to leave the phone off for a bit to recharge.
I have since turned off background data for Google Services, and I'm hoping this works, although I don't know what I'm going to lose in terms of functionality as a result of doing that.
But I'd like to know what the problem is and why this has suddenly happened as it's really bugging me. Hoping someone else has experienced this. I have searched for other threads on this topic, all refer to battery drain but I don't seem to have the same issue. If I look at my battery stats I'm not seeing Google Services at the top of the list like others. Mine is more to do with data.

I cant answer why or what it is, but one thing I did notice wasted a lot of battery for me (other than google now of course) was the google backup. You know the one you tick when you first go through the set up wizard on the phone? "Backup this device with google".

if you have various system or user apps wakelocks, first do a monitoring it with your favorite battery monitor and analysis tool to details.
gmail, google services, backup, sync contacts, other syncs google plus, etc, localization services, call direct or indirectly other apps, bringing more wakelocks (partial, kernel, network - your case I think) ... and more battery drains ... facebook is a classic example ... hungry app

Bear with me. If you are an expert on android maybe you can help me out here. First off, I have researched the crap out of this problem and still been unable to fix it, so YES, I did search before making this thread.
I am on a stock, rooted Verizon Galaxy S4. I have been watching my battery consumption carefully via the integrated battery settings menu, battery stats plus and wakelock detector apps. Mainly, there is a program or set of programs that typically is called "Google Services" that according to the integrated battery menu is consuming anywhere between 20-45% of my battery, sometimes more than the screen on time! My battery life is around 48hrs with 10hrs screen time but that is on the massive zerolemon 7500mah battery which I just bought, so I am not sure if that is above, below or just average (i.e. I have no real standard by which to judge).
Like I said I have read probably every thread about this problem with remedies such as; disable location, turn off google now, turn off google maps reporting, uninstall updates for google play/google play services/google framework settings, turn off google sync etc. I have tried them ALL, none seem to work. I have a feeling the issue is perhaps more in depth and above my head.
It gets more complicated. Although the stock android integrated battery menu reports it as using a massive amount of battery, the other two apps I mentioned above do not even report it, or at least not under a name that I regonize (perhaps that categorize it under a different process?). Under them screen time is by far the highest consumer.
So what to make of this? Is it a false report that the stock integrated android battery menu is reporting, and thus something to disregard? I doubt that because there are many other threads out there of people with the same problem and questions I have. But It's also not like my battery drains within hours. For instance, today I have been off the charge for 12.5hrs, with 3hrs and 40min of screen time and have 63% remaining on the 7500mah zerolemon extended battery.
If you can help, please do. If this is indeed a major drain I would really like to fix it.
EDIT: Maybe I should have posted this in the general S4 forum?
Make sure you're running the most recent version of the Play Store, version 4.1.10. There was an issue with the previous version that was causing battery drain. Just do a search for the most recent play store .apk file and install it with the package installer.

Yes! I saw this recommendation a million times. I was runing 4.1.6, which without much thought I assumed was newer than 4.1.10 (I interpreted the .10 to be a one instead of ten). But after your post it "clicked" for me, so I manually updated the play store and will see after the next charge whether it worked. Thanks again.

If it were me, I would next try flashing the no-wipe stock image from open1your1eyes0. I'm pretty sure that will fix your issue while leaving your apps & settings intact. It'll save you a lot of time and aggrevation as well.
I've been having a similar problem as well where every day google services seem to take up about 40% of my battery... I just updated to 4.1.10 play store and unchecked the Wifi & Mobile Network location in location setting yesterday evening. let see if this helps... today 3 hrs with no Google Services in my battery reading yet...

Well, I may have spoken too soon with my above post. As soon as I unplugged my phone earlier today I saw google services eating up the majority of my battery. But of course that only accounted for 1 or 2 minutes as I had just unplugged it. As the day progressed the amount used by google services did go up but not by as much as it previously had. So perhaps the update of google play store to 4.1.10 did work.
Currently, after being off the charger for 8hrs with about 1hr of screentime google services has used up 9% of the battery, which although not where I'd hoped is still much better than before.

well thats progress. As for myself, 1hr 27m screentime and 1 hr 40m voice call and off the charger for 10hrs 30mins. currently the battery is at 65% with no Google Services usage in sight. This is with Wifi, bt, and gps all enabled.
Go to data usage and tap on EACH program you do not need to have running background data and disable the background data. I only leave things unchecked like google play and services, email, just only a couple of things needed to get your messages. I freeze maps untill i need them and only have google location service on and gps and VZW off obviously. I only have email sync once an hour and only work email as i manually check for personal email.
Do that and your google services will behave. Android System never goes above 2% and Android OS is never above 5% unless im using wifi and such then it might creep up to about 9% after a few hours. Nothing else is ever above 9% unless its screen or device idle or cell standby.
Well, according to the stock battery report google services is still eating up my battery at 34% usage at 2h 19m. I unplugged 13h ago and used 2h 42m of screen time and am down to 28%.
BatteryStatsPlus reports google services as "Google Account Management", and although it says it has used the same time (2h 19m), it reports it as having used 6.42%. So I wonder if this is an issue of the stock battery report being too high, or whether google services really does consume 34%?
I'd really prefer to not start flashing things or wiping the phone. I hate messing with it and although I rooted it that is as far as I'd like to go. But that google play store 4.1.10 update didn't work.

I won't cause you battery consumption too much ( it used to be ) but with the new Google Play Service, it consume battery very low and it's really good if you leave it on.
1. It help you if you get picture and have G+ to make a Story for you.
2. It help you for your favorite location and trip time and traffic time to there.
And lots of other thing that I don't remember now.

It's strange to think how he draws our daily route without consuming battery! So I think he does this with the help of cellular networks! If the device used the GPS, we would have a huge battery drain!

Particularly I not use Google Now, much less G +, believe not be advantageous to have this option enabled! I mean, it would not matter to me!
I saw on Google's help page that it uses a considerable amount of data, which can be harmful to the battery!
I disabled both functions and deletes my history. My big fear was disable this function and impair functioning of any device, such as speed of access Maps, which tested it and did not notice any difference!
I believe that this function would be for Google to know what my daily route and enter it into the database of Google Now.

Particularly I not use Google Now, much less G +, believe not be advantageous to have this option enabled! I mean, it would not matter to me!
I saw on Google's help page that it uses a considerable amount of data, which can be harmful to the battery!
I disabled both functions and deletes my history. My big fear was disable this function and impair functioning of any device, such as speed of access Maps, which tested it and did not notice any difference!
I believe that this function would be for Google to know what my daily route and enter it into the database of Google Now.

Exactly! Higgs, you leave these options enabled or disabled?
I leave this option always on! It's helps several services and apps.
Experience tells me that when this location is ON together with Google Now then it is a battery killer!!! Google now is always looking for information to show on the cards in the background and uses fairly more battery.
But of course it can be cool when Google Now tells you witch buses you can catch and how long can you be at home...

I disabled these options, given that I do not use Google Now for now! Here in Brazil is very limited!
