Updating to 4.1.2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Today was released v4.1.2 for my girlfriend SII.
She's still on 2.3.3, the phone is rooted but she can't update through kies because of binary count.
What's the easiest way to solve this?
1-Using triangle away and update using kies (assuming that after using triangle away she can update)?
2-Using odin to manual update? Does she still needs to use triangle away?
3-Her carrier is TMN Portugal. But since it' probably full of bloatware can she use TPH (no carrier) from Portugal firmware?
4-Can she use triangle away on gingerbread (2.3.3)?
Thanks

Download the 4.1.2 firmware you want from Sammobile.com.
From what i know, if you flash a stock firmware your binary count will revert to 0 (not sure though)
About the carrier thing, i don't know. But you can root it aswell on 4.1.2 and then you can use titanium (or other software) to freeze or uninstall bloatwares..

Get the ROM you like (it doesn't matter if it's from portugal or not, branded or unbranded) from sammobile like the above poster said and Mobile Odin (play store), that's the easiest way to do it.

Thanks for the replies :good:
Instead of mobile odin which is a paid application on the market can i simple use the windows version of odin?
I know there's a lite version here on xda, but we have to manually install another file, and seems easier just using odin pc version.
Sorry for the newbie questions but it's not my phone.

Yes.
Put the phone in download mode. Connect to pc install drivers etc, then make sure you kill kies in task manager on windows. Or whatever OS your using. Then open odin. And flash the desired rom.tar to your phone. Simple as that
There are many guides for using odin. If you need any help just ask.
Edit-
as far as im aware, triangle away works on every version of android i have tried. As long as its rooted.

Try triangle away and them update via kies if is not working put phone in download mode and flash latest firmware from sammobile via odin
Send from my SGS2 I9100 with HassanROM and latest DorimanX 8.xx kernel

The M.O app is free, M.O Pro is paid.
M.O will flash and wipe.
M.O Pro will flash, wipe & Root.

Kies update after Odin update - F1 - my boss will **** me

Hi guys
I am new here and i have, for me, a BIG proglem...
My boss gave me his phone, i9100, to update it on ICS 4.0.3. I updated phone through Odin, everything went ok, my boss was happy
Then, he noticed some minor bugs and he asked me to downgrade phone on GB 2.3.4
I used checkfus to download 2.3.4 for our contry and restored GB 2.3.4. Again, everything went ok.
Then, my smart boss, connects phone to KIES and KIES showed error that he, KIES, cannot recognize phone?!
Now my boss is freaking out because he thinks he lost warranty and he is blaming me about his "loss" of warranty.
When i entered, Volume UP+Home+Power, it shows "0" in counter and "samsung official"?
What seems to be a problem? How can i restore GB so phone can be recognized through KIES?

He should have waited for Samsung to upgrade his phone .

You have not reinstalled the original firmware and codes no longer match on Kies server .

No stock is still Samsung warranty .
Download your original firmware via CHECKFUS flash via Odin then connect to KIES .

Your boss sounds like a real dickhead.
It's probably a difference in region, hence Kies won't allow you to upgrade.
Samsung are very relaxed regarding user firmware upgrades. I had 10+ counts in firmware upgrade counts and Samsung still fixed my phone free of charge (faulty proxy sensor)
Just tell your boss to chill out.
Flash your country CSC file and choose your CSC:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
But 2.3.4 is very old, I suggest you to flash 2.3.6.
Tell your boss to go **** off if he cant do it himself. Useless piece of ****... I hate those people who got a high position on the on cost of others.

Tnx for reply
I allready did that
1. Open checkfus
2. i am looking window > choose a firmware?
3. selecting android
4. gt-i9100
5. serbia (telenor) - gt-i9100LKAMSR
then download and flash through odin, is that step-by-step guide correct?
if this is correct i did that and KIES cannot recognize
Is something in my procedure in odin wrong?

How can i access those codes?
@Faryaab
I didnt make any backup before updating ICS, was that my mistake? Plz dont tell me thats it for making ****ing KIES to recognize phone...
He had that GB 2.3.4 before updating via Odin.
ps. sorry for my modest knowledge about my OWN problem, i know how to flash but thats it
Anyone?
Has he tried uninstalling Kies and Samsung drivers, rebooting PC, reinstall Kies + drivers, reboot and then try connecting to Kies?

You wrote them down before you flashed .
They are specific to the phone and its origins its provider etc .

As shaq1907 said you need to flash the correct csc file. If I understanded correctly, the kies says "Kies can't update this phone" or something like that.
I had that problem.
Look for an apk called spoofFW if you are on GB

Kies update after Odin flashing
Just flash your phone into older firmware and update via OTA. After OTA update, Kies will support update for your firmware.
Here is how I did it.
1. Flash XWKL3 (2.3.3) by Odin
2. Update via OTA (Under About phone=>Software update) <- Still Gingerbread
3. Connect to PC and now it is supported by Kies.
4. Update to ICS using Kies.
If you encountered update failure in Step 2, don't worry and keep trying until it success.

[Q] unsuccesful root! plz help!

Hi guys noob here!
keepin it brief, i have brought a rooted galaxy s2 I9100.
it all works fine except:
- i cannot upload any data (songs/videos) to the fone
- update to ice cream sandwich (error message after data download)
- i cannot connect via kies air (browser error after connection)
attempting to re-root i have found a CNET how to root guide but with no luck
- my current kernel v is [email protected] #2
i have matched the closest insecure as well as secure kernel (I9100XWKDG) & attempted to flash them using Odin 3 but no luck
- i cannot unroot the phone either as i cannot flash a secure kernel using Odin 3
can anyone advise how to get the unusable phone features working again?
i dont mind if the phone is rooted or not
Grab a branded or unbranded stock rom or go to samfirmware and get a stock rom from there, flash the device and start fresh if you not bothered about root and want the stock apps back.
Selection of stock ics roms here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
im not to keen on wiping the fone just yet as i haven't backed it up fully,
in the meantime i downloaded odin3 v3.04 (was using v1.83 earlier) & re-attempted to flash the insecure kernel
the result was ''complete (write) operation failed''
any idea what this means ?
Edit: removed as I think I misunderstood some of your post.
So you are unable to flash the stock rom using ODIN?
Any how, not sure what it is going on, maybe you are not flashing the correct file.
I believe it is better not to use ODIN to root your phone, the new method to root is the safest and the easiest and you dont have to worry about your baseband version.
Here is the link on how to root GS2, the files needed can be downloaded from the link below the video.

Good Luck.

Odin.
Remember that you need to download Samsung Kies Drivers previosuly. And, remember, WHILE YOU USE ODIN, KEEP KIES CLOSED.
Good luck!

[Q] Why won't Kies give me the option to update firmware?

I have Kies on mac and when I connect my GS3 it says I have the latest software. I have XXALE8 and I need the XXALF2. my phone is silenced during calls. You can't hear me and I cant hear you. i'm sure it's the firmware. i have an unbranded UK version. Now why does KIES say my firmware is up to date when it's not. I really need to flash the lates firmware before I sell this phone
Probably because Samsung hasn't made it available for your phone yet, but you could update offline with Odin.
This happened to me some days ago. Kies reported last firmware installed. No problems with stock rom ALE8, but I flashed stock ALF2 with odin, then flashed cf-root 6.2.
Try to flash with odin. Hope this helps.
I have a MAC, is there anyway besides ODIN and Kies? I've tried Heimdall (ODIN equivalency) but that does not play well with MAC like it should. My phone is busted. i need to upgrade or I will sell this baby.

You can try to use odin in parallels (http://www.parallels.com). I've found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13157189&postcount=7
But I can't ensure you that it works fine with s3. Don't forget to install drivers on Windows.
Or use bootcamp....
You might've heard of a magic place called 'Google Search'.
Here's the result of a few seconds search:

You'll then be able to flash any firmware you want through CWM

[Q] KIES does not show latest firmware

I got a Galaxy S3 around a week back. The CSC was set to COA and it was running the old firmware. KIES used to show the current and latest firmware.
I have updated to the XXALF2 using ODIN and also set the CSC to BTU. However KIES does not show the lastest firmware anymore. Just the current firmware. Does that mean, KIES wont be able to update my phone?
i have done exactly the same & getting the same result in kies, i think you have to be on unmodified rom without flash count triggered? i could be wrong though
Right after the flash. My CSC was set to KOR. However I changed it to BTU using *#1234*IMEI*. I was getting the message that KIES cannot update the firmware when it was on KOR. That message seems to have gone.
This problem is quite confusing.
i flashed mine with stock LF2 BTU but kies states "your device does not support upgrading via kies"
and my CSC shows "CSC:LF2 (H3G)" is this normal?
Hmm. I had that message on KIES when my CSC changed to KOR. After changing it to BTU, that message was gone.
Initially - XXALE8 -COA (KIES showed the version the phone and the latest version).
After flashing - XXALF2 -KOR (KIES states that it wont be able to update firmware).
Now - XXALF2 - BTU (KIES does not show the latest firmware. Just the one on the phone).
I got this problem too i think it`s bcuz i rooted my phone..i have stock firmware btw
I have seen that on a few forums that rooting might trigger that. However I am on the stock firmware only. I haven't rooted my phone.
sry for double post but i fixed my problem
the only thing i had to do was to reset the counter with triangle away
Where is this triangle located?
anyone with rooting experience explain what the problem is or is this normal after rooting?
should i have only flashed PDA & not PHONE & CSC or is that not possible?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494114
here u can find triangle away all u have to do is install the app and then press reset counter after u open the app
then it will reboot and then u have to press the volume up button to reset the counter
sry for my english
Do I need to root my phone. If so, how and how can I unroot it after using the application?
if ur not rooted u dont need to run triangle away bcuz ur counter is set to 0 by default
there must be another solution for you...just wait to somebody else answer..
i thought even flashing stock with odin without root still bumps up the flash counter?
So I have managed to fix the problem. Here's my solution.
1) Root the phone.
2) Run the triangle away application to reset the counter.
3) After that's done, wipe the data on the phone (volume up+home+power button) and select the options:
a) wipe data/factory reset
b)wipe cache partition
c) advanced - wipe dalvik cache
4) Remove battery.
5) Put the battery back in and hold (volume down+home+power button).
6)Start ODIN and restore to the firmware that was ON THE PHONE.
7)Reset the phone to default after thats done.
I did that and now KIES is back to normal for me. And now it show XXALF2 (BTU).
How do you fix it & keep root?

Ive rooted using cfroot and kies is still recognising my phone for updates
Although i have not done anything but root
Kies upgrade depends onan actual upgrade for the firmware being on the server .Also the phone codes you present it matching firmware on the server.Root may or may not alter such codes.
Solution ignore Kies join XDA and learn how to flash or download stock firmware .

kies will not update firmware on rooted phone

Hi
I have rooted my SGS3 using the ALLINONE root from SGS3 Toolkit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488) and it works fine. About a month ago I got a notice about a firmware update and I installed it using kies. The root ofcause dissappeared but I used the toolkit to re-root the device. No problem so far.
a few days ago I got a new notice about another firmware update and wanted to install it using kies. Now however kies tells me that the device does not support upgrading (something with "initialising").
What can I do to get this firmware update installed?

Flashing stock rom wipes your settings. Make a choice, either get root and forget about Samsung updates or flash stock and forget about XDA, can`t have it both
Moved to Q/A
I am not in it for the ROMs but merely for the rooting. In general I like the stock-rom as it is but do need to have the device rooted in order to use some apps.

Last time, once you have root you can no longer install OTA`s, you can however upgrade witk Kies provided you have no custom kernel. You will loose root and you may loose all your settings. So it will be easier for you to download the new rom from sammobile and install it with Mobile Odin Pro and keep root and loose no settings and files.
I have the same doubts/problems...
Where do I find in SamMobile the ROMs? Are those the zip under OTA files?
Do I the use Odin? Is there a guide somewhere? (I did search and ended up in this post)
Cheers
P.S. I read on SamMobile something about not being flashable via recovery (correct?)

Based on my experience you can take an update via Kies or OTA with root as long as the stock rom remains intact (no major mods). I have generally upgraded with a stock kernel. I have mostly lost root or at least had to fix permissions each time.
The settings have remained intact each time (titanium should take care of this any way)

Cool ... I should have mentioned I have always had a stock recovery if sticking with stock Rom. Because as you say the updates don't work with non stock recovery
