Data On AOSP? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hey guys i currently have a VZW SGS3. I might upgrade to the s4. I wanted to know how the data is on any aosp builds. For the sgs3, aosp roms all have very bad sometimes no data connection. I really like aosp preferably over TW. please if anyone has an experience how is the data on the sgs4 on an aosp rom
thanks!

Anyone?

I've been running CM10.1 on mine since the day I got it. Data is about as good as you can get with Samsung radios. I haven't had any issues with data kicking, or anything like, and coverage and speeds have been about the same as what I had on my Galaxy Nexus for both 3G and 4G.

I'm running aosp on my s4 and my wife is running touch wiz on her s3 and we have the same signal strength. Hope this helps.

I've run speedtests on my S4 with TW and CM10.1, both were pretty much the same: about 25 down, 5 up on Verizon's 4G. You needn't worry.

Thank you guys! For someone on the s3 aosp data is awful. Looks like I'll be upgrading

[Q] What modems are my gingerbread brothers using for TMO?

i have tried them ALL all of the ICS ones and the GBD ones and when im in my apt i get 1-3 bars and alot of dropped calls. im currently on kid based blaze to see if the ****ty reception stops. if im out in my area (Downtown Pensacola,FL) ive got all bars and the phones fine so im just wondering what everyone else is using.
I'm on tmo using Team Perfection Objection ICS. usually have 4 bars! Also great battery life and smooth as butter. As far as modem goes the one that came with objection. No 3g/4g but don't have either in my area and hookup to eifi anyway. Hope that helps.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 running Objection
Im fine with staying with gingerbread until the note comes to tmo, then ill go back to ics. Theres 4g everywhere here but i just was not getting it on ics. Im using "the unofficial,Emily" as my rom and there is an update but the update uses ics. **** sucks

Trade my GSM galaxy nexus for a galaxy note. What's your opinion?

I am interested in trading my nexus for an unlocked note. I plan on using T-mobiles 4g on the note. The GPS is horrible on my nexus and the reason Im trading for the note is because I've read that it is great with gps. That's pretty much the only reason. What are your opinions, how is GPS on ur note? Let me know everything that u think. And I do plan on rooting the note.
Edit : I plan on running cm7 due to the responses here. I've read that it does great when it comes to GPS but I understand that its a hit or miss when it comes to GPS

GPS is hit or miss. Why not keep the nexus also? I'm starting to consider getting a gnex for when I don't want to lug this thing around, plus the updates. I've had this phone since release and have been waiting for ics for the source for the kernel got over clock and find myself waiting for jb ports now. GPS with ics radios is so so.

After the ICS update I can't get a hard lock without wifi on... Really sucks and there are a few more peeps with the same issue. It definitely was a winner with GB, but with ICS it's not (though I'm running stock ICS). If the price is right I say go for it, maybe you'll have better luck with Tmob 4G than I'm having with ATT LTE.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this, there are several of us who would be greatly appreciative.

I updated to stock jellybean. Deoxed and rooted of course. And GPS is working amazingly now. Like never before. I took it for a test run around my city and its just amazing now.

How is the Radio?

Samsung devices don't have the best history with Radio quality. I am debating an upgrade and trying to decide between a DNA and N2 on Verizon. I know the S3 and a few other recent Samsung devices have had problems with dropped calls, weak signals in fringe areas, etc. The DNA uses a Qualcom radio so it's pretty stable. It looks like the GN2 is still using their own in house radio design?
My wife's iPhone5 and my N2 seem to get the same signal strength everywhere we go.

After coming from the galaxy nexus anything would be an improvement. But, actually the radio has been great for me
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
The radio pales to the quality in the DNA (which is likely more due to antenna), but is miles ahead of the galaxy nexus.
Personally working in a 4G fringe area, I had better handoff on my thunderbolt than the N2. Both devices forced into 3G I think the thunderbolt performed better on 3g, while the N2 does better on 4G.

Just want to repeat this. On the galaxy nexus I had to keep my phone in 3G just so I wouldn't constantly drop data. This phone however has been great! My wife has the S3 and she also has great reception and data reliability so they must have fixed something.
It's the first Samsung phone that gets reception similar to my old Thunderbolt. My Droid Charge, Galaxy Nexus, and Galaxy S3 all got poorer reception than my GN2 and TBolt (the Droid Charge and the GNex were tied for worst).
Thanks for all the feedback here. How would you say 3G connectivity compares to an old Motorola Droid X (Current Phone)

LOL, no kidding (I have had both devices)
Personally, I think the GNEX was the biggest POS ever made.
I actually loved my Droid Charge (i still have it somewhere) and after a TON of mods and radio swaps etc it was way way better than I could ever get the GNEX to work.
That being said, the N2 radio is hands down better than either one although it is not as good as the Rezound I still use occasionally and about equal to or maybe slightly better than my Wife's Galaxy S3.

Funny, I've only had the Note 2 a few days and haven't been in any good 4G areas yet, but I find so far that it's much better than my Rezound. Where I live I only have 3G, with 4G being across the lake.. my Rezound would pick up 4g for 30 seconds at a time very rarely (like once a week), and never transmit data, but the Note 2 gets 4g from there off and on pretty regularly, at least in my house. It's 3G signal also seems more consistent, at least going by signal bars and how it "feels" to use (haven't actually compared dBm). The Rezound would routinely drop it's data, sign out of Google Talk, take forever to re-establish it's connection, etc. I HAD to use it on WiFi or it was basically unusable. The Note 2 so far has been great.
While I have Zero issues its the radio, if your coming from a Motorola Device, it's not as good. Motorola just has killer radios. That being said, I have had no problems with the Note 2
I'm in an LTE market in Maryland and my signal is horrible. I can be only a couple feet away from any building entrance and my signal goes out. No 4G, no 3G... just straight up no signal. And the thing that kills me is that the icon will say it's on LTE. I have to be literally standing OUTSIDE to get a good internet connection. And tethering?.. forget it! My connection is intermittent at best. Frequently drops out to the point where I can't even download from XDA via the phone's browser. Love the Note II, been onboard since the first Note but... this is making me think either I have a bad radio or my choice to switch to Verizon from ATT wasn't a smart one. I need PRL's people. NOW!

Coming from the rezound and a inc4g for a week, this phone is just as good as those radios. I can get a 4g signal inside my work where the S3 can't. The exynos set is absolutely badass on this phone and the reason I didn't buy a S3.

I beg to differ. I had the Razr Maxx before my Note 2 (and Droid X before that) and so far I'm getting exactly the same amount of signal everywhere I go. Best radio on a Samsung phone yet. Very happy with it.

PRL only effects the 3g side of the radio from what I've read. I would try to get a replacement device

The radio here is southern orange county has been very good.. better then my Gnex.
I personally came from the Galaxy S3 and the difference in service quality is astounding. Before I got the GS3 I had a RAZR and had excellent service, with the GS3 I couldnt even send texts without hitting resend 5 to 10 times. I had to get something different so I went with the Note 2 and this phone has as good if not better service that all the Moto phones I have compared it with and has way better servixe that the GS3.

Slower data speed after ota?

I've noticed much slower data since taking the 4.1.2 ota. My phone is completely stock. Is anyone else seeing this? I've been perfectly happy with stock until now, but Verizon has crossed the line With this one.

Yes, I've noticed that too. So I tried different custom roms but no difference.
If i had to guess the ota had nothing to do with it, rather than vzw rolling out a bunch of updates at the same time thus congesting the network. My speeds and signal are drastically improved.

Your data speeds are primarily affected by the baseband that you are running. I'd visit the Android Development section of the Galaxy Note 2 and locate the Galaxy Note 2 modems thread.
I was getting slower data too with newer AMC3 modem, but I flashed back to ALL4 modem and blazing fast data again.

A few easy CM10 and CM11 questions

I'm tired of my phone lagging, freezing up and just being slow. Installing the fastboot files and starting over from a completely clean slate didn't fix my problems.
I wanna try Cyanogenmod 10 or even CM11 but I'm not sure if 11 is supported on the droid razr maxx and what doesn't work with it.
Can someone please tell me or point me to a thread of what's different between cm10 and cm11.
I saw an old post that said on cm10 the camera flash didn't work. Has this been fixed?
What doesn't work on cm11?
I haven't flashed a ROM in over two years and that was on my droid x. I flashed darkslide and a cyanogenmod ROM but I don't remember what one.
I've been eligible for an upgrade for a few months but I don't wanna lose my unlimited data.
Any info would be appreciated!

Simply, CM 10 is Jelly Bean, and CM 11 is KitKat.
Spyder XT912 CDMA
CM11 Kitkat (OS 4.4.4). Pretty much everything works, at this point they are mainly adding features and working out the bugs. Some people still report having orange bars, APN issues, some audio issues and slow screen wakeup but those problems do not appear to be consistent and may depend on which nightly build they are running.
Most of the current ROM's seem to be running very well with few problems. There is of course CM11 and there are several other good ones.
Paranoid Android: the current version is streamlined and has few options, it looks and feels pretty close to stock android.
Liquid Smooth: the current version has lots of options, feels fast and smooth.
PACman: recently rebuilt and seems to be running well, it's a combination of features from multiple ROM's.
Other good ones include slimkat and carbon among others. There are some newer ROM's but some are still a little buggy.
So there are plenty to try out and play with to see which one suits your needs as far as features go. I use Safestrap which does provide multiple slots for ROM installation. You could always wipe the stock Verizon ROM but I like to keep it installed as a backup.
Good luck.
Please ensure you use the Question and Answer section to ask your questions.
Development is for the advance on development.
Thanks
Thank you both for the info. I'm charging my phone now and I'll try a rom or two later tonight or tomorrow. I had safestrap on my droid x but never used it. The last time I flashed a rom I had to use bootstrap recovery and flash a rom in recovery.

start with officialy supported custom rom for our razr, for example AOSPA and Cyanogenmod... or both at the same time since safestrap has multiple slots.
Does the mobile hotspot app work on cm? When I had safe strap installed, mobile hotspot wouldn't work and WiFi would only work when I'd reboot.
I removed recovery for now and I'll reinstall it and flash a ROM either tomorrow night or Saturday.
I was all set to do it today but I have to work a different shift tomorrow and don't want to have to worry about my alarm not going off and oversleeping.

You can kiss your unlimited goodby in October!
Its going to screw me over because dsl or cable is not on my area.
http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/mobile/verizon-throttle-speeds-some-heavy-4g-users-starting-october-n166721
Well if they throttle me then they throttle me. I could probably get by on 4 gigs if I didn't tether as much and used my WiFi at home.
I tether because I have verizon dsl and it's as slow as molasses. I could get cable but that's kinda pricey and their rates keep going up.
I mainly use a lot of data at home during the week and hardly any on weekends.
I haven't gone over 20 gigs in a few months and I'm not doing too bad so far this month... just under 7 gigs.

Guess I will switch to the more everything plan at 10gigs of data for 3 smartphones for $160
Why stay with the unlimited when it cost more for less gigs.
Verizon says it will only throttle when you have used over 4.7 gigs & the tower you are on is congested.
This is bs, I have already been thru this a few years back with the 3g unlimited plan when it was throttled.
Either tower was always congested or Verizon just lied about it, I would say they lied.
The initial hardware cost is high, but Verizon thru Millenicom is $89.99 for 20gigs a month for 4g data hotspot only.
Satellite internet is really fast now with Exede but expensive, no cost for hardware but plans cost more.
