Defective s4? Just bought it today. - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I just bought an s4 today with Verizon. I'm laying here in bed and I noticed something strange which I never saw on my note 2 or my s3. I was reading a Web page with my brightness turned all the way up and it seemed like every 20 secs r so it would get a little dimmer then it would get bright again. I have adjust screen tone turned off. Then I went to settings, display, brightness and I see this message that says something like max brightness had been turned down to avoid overheating. Is this why my screen seemed to be dimming then getting bright again? Yes, the phone was quite warm during all of this. It also only happens when the brightness is turned all the way up.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

Its because of the heat if your phone it turned the brightness down. Because it could be a big source if heat. Interesting enough that has never happened to me.

This happens at any brightness I think and not related to heat- some of the main browsers have a slight auto adjust brightness even if the phone setting is turned off. I read it a few times so I assume it is that. I see this as well using Chrome.
In a dark room, have brightness to middle or something, and be on a light/white web page in Chrome.Pull the notification bar down and without really noticing, the screen will get slightly brighter due to the darker color. But drag the bar back up and instantly you can barely see the screen go back slightly darker again for the browser.

It was happening using any app not just a browser. I literally sat here and didn't touch the screen at all and I could see it go from bright to dimmer then to bright.. Back and forth..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

And I've seriously never seen that message about brightness being turned down on my s3 or note 2. I don't even know why my s4 is so warm right now..
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

guys, it's a heat issue.
when the phone reaches a certain temp (i believe it's around 35 degrees C), it automatically dims down your display, no matter waht the brightness. you can be on 0 brightness, and it will dim anything that's a bright page, like a bright white.
test it by doing this: be in the browser when you notice it dim, and tap on the URL bar to bring up the keyboard...notice how bringing up the keyboard restores the brightness to what it was before that? that's because now the screen isn't engulfed in a super bright white screen..now it's divided between half bright white, and half darker from the keyboard, so it thinks "okay, the screen isn't fully white now, so we can go back to original brightness."
i suppose another way of showing why this is, which is much easier and idk why i didn't write this first lol but go into the brightness control in the display menu when it does it, and notice how it says "screen birghtness will be lowered to reduce risk of overheating" or soemthing. it only says that when you hit a certain temp.
the phone gets really hot, period. that's just how the S4 is unfortunately. so you may notice this happening often; i do lol

My phone does this too. I was wondering why it was doing this too. I guess the heat issue makes sense.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda premium

Yeah dude that's exactly what the message said and I've never seen that before in my other phones. Don't understand why it got so hot? I wasn't even doing much... So the s4 naturally just gets warmer? My note 2 never got this warm, ever. I just want to make sure mine isn't messed up...
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

I also turned the phone off for like 10mins and it feels much cooler now but that message is still there.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

My s4 does not really ever get hot and I charge while tethering all the time (same process would heat my s3 up)
Have you disabled the adapt display and adaptive backlight settings.

This was happening when I was charging it actually. It felt pretty damn hot. I turned off auto adjust but Idk what the other one is that you said.

Is there anyway I can check the tempature of the phone?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

System monitor lite

I'd really like to know what I'm still getting that message.. Phone barely feels warm..

Here's what mine says. I just downloaded it and went to tempature.

Seems like it's working perfect now... Hasn't got warm at all. Maybe it just did that one time bcuz it was the first couple hours it's ever been used and the first time it's ever been charged?

Also check for the "Screen mode". It is under Settings -> My device Tab -> Display -> Screen mode
I usually leave it at Professional photo for less saturated but more accurate color rendering. If you check "Adapt display" or "Dynamic" it will try to adjust contrast based on scene displayed which may look like brightening and dimming of display, if you had "Auto adjust screen tone" unchecked.

What does the auto button do?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app

I did notice that my s4 was warmer when i first got it than now... like i was almost hitting 40 often and now i hardly ever hit 35. don't know if it's because I ran a custom rom or not, or the phone was just settling. but yeah my first days with it I was worried

Superdim root required

Check out superdim (root), its in the market for free, it works amazingly well. I always noticed the atrix was particularly bright even at its lowest setting. I never *****ed because I was just happy to have a bright screen visible in daylight. Now we have best of both worlds.

Sweet! thanks
AdjBrightness works well too.
Nice, I will have to check these out. The blindingly bright "dim" setting was one of my pet peeves with the Atrix!
I have check it now, and it works like a charm, very low bright. excellent.

Thanks! I was actually just noticing that super dim didn't stay dark. What a great idea
Edit: I noticed that super dim actually darkens the screen while this new deal simply puts a dark patch over the screen. That's the difference between root and no root lol
Ps use both for super reading mode!

I've been using Elixir which does all sorts of stuff but one of the options is a tggle widget that lets you shuffle through up to 5 brightness settings. I use Auto, 5%, 12%, 40%, and 60%.

Well after playing with screen filter, I'm not crazy about it after all. It does nothing to the backlight but puts a grey tint to everything which makes it hard to read at the lower levels.
However, I've been emailing the author of superdim. He's already put out a version with the home screen profile shortcuts I asked for.. wish more devs were that responsive!

If you talk to him again tell him his app rocks and he's got the atrix communities thumbs up.
Side note I somehow got the dimness to stick through a screen off. Start at boot would be nice tho..

I actually just found him here. [APP] Superdim
It seems like the brightness after wake sticks as long as it's at 20 or above. It's like 20 equates to 0% in phone settings.
It's funny, most noticeable at 0. Hit the power button to shut the display off, and you notice it gets brighter before turning off.
Just tested this on my MT3GS, I can set it at 0 and it stays there. Even after a reboot.
[EDIT]
Working with the dev some more, I think he's got this fixed in the next beta! It restores the dim settings after wake! Stay tuned!
Seems to be fixed... my phones lowest is 30... very weird

Turn off capacitive buttons during movie

I finally got around to watching the green Hornet last night and I realized the capacitive buttons do not turn off. I remember a setting on the epic that controlled them but it was for the keyboard. I looked in the display settings and didn't see anything for them; am I missing something?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
This was one of the biggest complaints when it was released. As of right now, no, there is no way of turning it off. Gotta wait till root. There is an app that some have been using (can't remember its name) that does it in a certain way.

I'm looking for this as well. I was able to turn off the LEDs on my HTC EVO 4g back in the day with LEDs Hack (ROOT ONLY) in the marketplace but it doesn't work for the 3VO. The capacitive buttons on the 3VO are bright as **** too.

I just tried this and it seemed to have issues consistently turning the button lights back on.
Now if only I could turn off the charging led light too.
Oh, I totally forgot about that. I just made a widget that dropped the brightness to 96.1 (highest i could get) and checked the box. Works great though it makes the magnifying glass light up a bit. Still, cool beans!

Yeah my search key lights up too lol I hate it, but its better then the BRIGHT lights.
Someone made a script to toggle capacitive button lights on/off. It does require temp root though. Haven't tried it myself.

I've mentioned it a few times. Tasker+ screen filter.
As soon as a game/movie starts it goes to 96.1 and turns capacitives off. Then, as soon as you exit, screen filter gets turned off.
I also have it do that when I plug the phone in it pops up a menu asking "car, home, night" if I choose night screen filter comes on at 40% to dim the screen past its lowest level. (girlfriend is a light sleeper)

[Q] Auto brightness issue?

Is it just me, or is there some problems with the auto brightness feature on this phone? From time to time the screen suddenly get a lot darker, even without the lightning in the room changing at all.
My phone is Telenor(Norway) branded, with the firmware: PDA:XWKF3| PHONE:XXKE7| CSC:TENKF1
Did some searching on the issue, and found some articles saying this should have been fixed in a firmware update, checked with Kies and i got the latest firmware, so either this wasn't really fixed, or is there something weird with my phone? Or something else maybe?

Yep your hand is over the sensor. I run with it disabled since it doesn't work well at all, and it's so easy to manually adjust brightness by swiping the notification bar.
Gotten a clearer view on what the problem is now, the auto brightness it self seems to work, but it's a bit slow and very direct. If am in a light environment and it gets dark, it doesn't start lowering brightness right away, but it takes 3-5 seconds and boom brightness goes very low. That's why i thought it was something wrong with it.
In my opinion they need to smooth the auto brightness out, and let it react faster, would make it a lot better.

Is there a way to disable the front LED light?

Just what the title says. I have been using my 4g LTE as an alarm clock, but the charging light is annoying in a pitch black room.
Thanks,
Shadowhawk2020
Flip it over while it's charging.
I do that now but light does escape and my wife is really sensitive to light when we sleep.
Not from stock that I know of.
If your rooted you may be able to use the app 'LED hack'. I used it religiously on my old Evo when one of the soft buttons' lights went out. I know there were settings for the notification light.
I haven't tested that app on the LTE though.
you need an app or mod for that. maybe root too
I turn mine off with RootDim (app) but you have to root the phone and install superuser.

Will check that out. Will be a nice tasker/nfc launcher fix
Tried out RootDim. It works, but only kills the charge led 3-5 mins at a time, I've been systematically trying the different triggers and none seem to keep it off.
And doesn't seem to have any means to be automated or even a widget.
I believe the old LEDsHack from the OG Evo was actually an always on service that would lock the hardware setting in the desired on/off position. At first glance this app seems to just flip the switch and walk away so the light comes back on the next time Android checks it.
But I've only been fiddling with this app for 15mins, will post back if I figure something out.
Spend about $10, if that much, and buy a cheap electric alarm clock and leave the phone in the front room or under something to block the light.

[Q] LED Notification Frequency

Has anyone found anyway to change the frequency the LED flashes with notifications? I've searched around and haven't found anything. I tried out a few apps but none seemed to change the power button LED.
Nope, i was fine with it until i saw my gfs gs3 light up like an xmass tree to let her know she got a text message.
Ours works but its pretty lackluster.
The only hope for a faster LED is when the ROMs start coming out that give control of it. And who knows if it'll even have the ability to be changed then. Stuck with a 25 second gap (for now).

25 seconds between flashes!? I've seen a E971 (Rogers variant) flash its front notification led and it was on for about a second off for two.
Can anyone clarify the blinking pattern on the AT&T model please? I'm thinking of getting the AT&T version due to expandable storage...

25 seconds (may)be a little drastic, but no one's really sure why there's such a time difference with the notifications.
Next time you get a text or something, check how often the light around the power button goes off. It's pretty annoying.

Its minutes between blinks it feels like.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
It's definitely just twenty five seconds haha. If your phone is locked during the time you get the notification, the power button will immediately glow red for about two to three seconds, turn off, and the light will come back on in twenty five seconds and so forth.
Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
Very much useless compared to other phones I've had. With the long intervals between blinks and short duration of the blink, I almost never notice it. I just periodically hit the power button to see the lock screen rather than try and wait out the indicator light.
It's really only a problem if your phone is on silent and you haven't checked on it every once in awhile.
A theory to negate this minor flaw is to have a repeat notification (sound) feature for when you hear your phone but you're too busy to check it.
I'm not sure if this option is available, and if it's not, maybe it could be suggested to a dev and implemented somewhere.
Sometimes the charging indication stops blinking too at about 80%, although I thought I read somewhere the batteries only really charge to 80% to last longer, so there may be some tweaking that needs done. I like the gradual brightness it does too sort of how the HTC Fusz phones would look like they are breathing when charging.
My SG3 did light up like crazy, but was too bright and only worked with Samsung apps- K9 Email for instance had weird blinking and only blinked in the default color which for a tri-color was a waste. My Atrix HD blinked all the way home from the Activation SMS then never blinked again for the whole week I put up with it then returned it, so I think I can live with 25sec for now. It kind of reminds me of Knight Rider too and I like Red over blue/green.
Yeah my roommate actually has a SG3 and her LED light drives me insane. It's just way too bright, frequent, and distracting. Not exactly a phone you can sit on your desk and just ignore while trying to do something else.
Has anyone tried something like light flow from the play store to see if it can change the interval?
