Soft-bricked Strange Case! Willing to Donate! - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have combed most of XDA and Google for a solution to this, but to no avail!
I was trying to partition my EXTERNAL SD card through CWM Recovery while on an ICS ROM and somehow my Recovery managed to repartition my INTERNAL SD Card instead of the external one. I am able to get into Recovery but not flash anything at all. I have tried almost every solution I can think of but have been met with the following oddities on this phone:
1) The phone does NOT access Download Mode through the customary VOL+&VOL- combination of buttons, instead it accesses it by having the VOL+ button pressed while connecting the USB cable or having the Power button presses while the VOL+ button is pressed.
2) Odin does not get passed the repartition process and hangs. When I don't check the repartition option, it stops at the "flashing CACHE.RFS" step and says "Unable to complete(write) operation. Aborted!!"
3) Attempts at flashing back to stock with Heimdall have been unsuccesful as well. I am met with with a "-libusb12" error and it aborts the operation as well.
4) ADB is also unable to see the phone.
I've tried different drivers and no success. :/
Whatever help I can get is most welcome. I'd go so far as to donate via Paypal to anyone capable of successfully helping to fix this phone considering it's the only phone I have any money for at the moment.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!

Pm me and I'll give you instructions on fixing this

[Q]I really need help with: error: E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmblk0p1

btw: super noob here
ok so i am getting this error and i dont know why
i rooted my phone and when i tried to upgrade to 2.2 (using odin) i got this:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(Invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD:
it takes me to recovery mode and just stays there with 5 options (reboot, apply sd card: update.zip, wipe data/fact. reset, wipe cache, format internal sd).
the worst part is that i found out (after research, as thus i could be wrong) that i must have somehow gotten euro firmware because my up key moves down in recovery mode and my power key isnt the "ok" key used to select anything in this damn menu!!!
ive only rooted my phone...and i got the regular update.zip (saved to internal like instructed) like everyone else (i think) + tethering and set cpu (saved zip to my external sd card)
so....i cant exit recovery mode, i cant even select any of those 5 options
i can turn off my phone, but it immediately goes back to the recovery page with the error
please please please help
mom bought me this for my birthday like 3 days ago and the walkthrough seemed easy!
i will pay and bring my phone to you if you can fix it lol
what you should do is boot into download mode and flash the stock rom.. it will unroot u but its better then not havin a fone to root at all right?
if u have troubles booting into download mode try holding down the up and down volume keys while the fones off then plug the usb cord into ur fone it shood bring u to the download mode screen.. but make sure u hold the volume buttons down before u plug it in
thanks....i would really really appreciate it if you told me how exactly to flash a stock file (put it in the odin thingie? PDA, MODEM, or CSC? is this the right file: T959UVJFD.tar? please let me know
There is a walkthrough on this site on how to use odin to flash back to stock. I believe you have the right file there. But you will probably have to flash the pit file as well. I would just to be safe. This will set everything back to stock. Odin can be picky, and make you want to cry. But relax, your still ok. You can get into recovery mode, so you should be able to access download mode. Do a little reading on the site. You should be able to find the links to odin. If you can't, pm me, I will help. I've used odin before, and even though this is scary right now, you need to stay calm. Panicking isn't goin to help. I am new on the site so I can't post links. If you can't find them, contact me, I will e-mail them to you or some thing. Good luck!
Did you get it figured out yet? ODIN should fix you up. Flash the stock build here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739091 just download this, unzip it and load the pit file into the pit field and the larger file in the pda field in odin. Make sure to have this loaded into odin before plugging your phone in or it might not work. To get into download mode just power off your device and hold volume up and down then plug in your usb cable.

If I remember correctly, /dev/block/mmcblk refers to your SD cards. mmcblk0 is the internal (16GB) SD card, and mmcblk1 is whatever extra microSD card you have installed. /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 is the first partition on your internal SD card.
What most likely happened is you messed up your Odin installation, and probably chose to "reformat partitions" when you flashed, wiping your internal card, and thus essentially making your phone unbootable in its current state.
Why you needed Odin to root is beyond me, yet so is why someone would do something that could cause irreparable harm to their device do so without understanding what they were doing. If you are going to ignore the warnings attached to flashing unsupported ROMs (such as flashing an unreleased testing ROM onto a completely different device than it was intended), then you ought to at least understand what it is that you are actually doing.
Also, what does this have to do with development? Aren't there similar posts in the Q&A forum about people who have done the same thing?
that´s SD problem 100% sure. yesterday i had this problem and solved with a newone SD card. (older was 512Mb and not working, newone is 1gb and all was ok)
Were you trying to use Eugene's files? If so you need to follow the directions in his thread.

I got a same problem. As you said I tried start download mode. But the Android system recovery <3e> page still appearing. Firstly battery picture appear and then system recovery. Is there another way to boot into download mode?
There is the three button mode, vol up and down plus power, or if you plan to flash alot of rom's, get a jig. there is adb. also aio tools.
one of these should get you into dl mode to odin.
you are in recovery mode if it says "2E" or "3E" recovery you should be able to get into download mode and then you can flash back into stock.
To get to download mode plug in you usb into the computer first. then, hold the volume keys both down then plug into the phone (while it is showing the recovery mode, in other words it is still on) if it does not work, then pull out then try again a couple of times When you plug it in leave for 2-3 secs. If this does not work or you can't get it Then, just buy a Jig from the xda member connextion2005 (mobilevideotech.com I think). they are 8 bucks and all you do in just plug it in and it will bring up the download mode. From there you can do this
Get the Odin program 1.7 or newer, get the Stock 2.1 Tar file, get the 512pit file
You can find these in the general forum in the thread called Noob guide
then
Open Odin, plug in your phone, put into download mode. connect it to the computer it will recognize might say com8 or some other number
Load the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area.
You want to check the 're-partition' box.
Now click start, let it finish, and this time your phone will load up just fine!
Then, root the phone and you can flash your new Rom.
You the super oneclick method it is easier to root then download Rom manager and now you can flash any rom you want
Still can't mount internal SD
I've tried the above steps and was able to get out of Recovery Mode, but now I can't get the Internal SD to mount to allow me to put custom ROMs on there...any ideas??

A little help please?

Hi, I recently bought a used Vibrant from someone... Worked great.
So I decide to update it and hope maybe get the GPS fixed, but Kies wouldnt work, I tried on 5 different computers with different windows, no luck, crashed on windows 7, and said the OS on the phone is a modified version and so it cant update on Windows XP,
So I decide to try Odin... but Odin only detects the phone in USB Debugging mode, and thats wasnt very helpful... For some reason, whenever I try to put the phone in Download mode, Windows XP AND 7 say that an unrecognized device has been attached... I tried USB drivers, 10 different times on each comp, different combos, different techniques from all over the forum and the internet... Odin wouldnt show the device in Download mode.
So I install clockwork and download the rom to restore the device to its factory state, I have it reboot into clockwork recovery and restore it using the files I downloaded to the phone... Now the phone doesnt boot, it stays stuck on the "Samsung" logo, I hear the T-Mobile jingle, but thats just it, the Samsung logo stays on and nothing happens.
I cant access the phone from the computer at all now, since it could never detect the phone in Download mode anyways, and when I put the phone in recovery mode, it shows two hard drives that I cant open... I have a micro sd card that I tried to load another restore onto and try to use that in recovery, but the recovery mode wont let me browse the sd card....
I hit a brick wall now... I don't think I have a use for yet another paperweight.
Ive all but given up, so if you could please help me, I would reaaaally appreciate it.
Edit: I tried using Ubuntu, but same thing, nothing happens in Download mode, and it only shows two drives that I cant access in recovery mode.
What ROM did you flash?
Yes, I installed the drivers over 10 times over on 10 different comps using 10 different versions of the drivers.
Kies, Kies Mini, drivers I found on these forums, drivers I found in other forums... nothing
Rom... Ummmm I used this file wwwmediafirecom/?kqaulorzx5f6dyq
UPDATE: I formatted the sdcard now, cleared cache and personal data using the recovery console... Now im even more screwed up because I cant access the other options
"E:Cant open /sdcard/update.zim (so such file or directory) installation aborted"
Ok, I put the phone in recovery mode and opened Odin, it was detected... I know its supposed to be download mode, but Im really desperate and am going to try anything since it only detects my phone in recovery mode... I pressed start in Odin and it hasn't moved in 30 minutes

Odin will not work in Recovery mode, you have to be in Download mode, use the key combinations for download mode, mine is turn off the phone, unplug the USB and hold down the volume key and turn the phone on, while holding the volume down, and make sure you have the pit file, do a reasearch and you will find the pit file for vibrant. You have to have the pit file attached when you use Odin. But make sure you are in download mode not in recovery.
Get phone into download mode. The easiest way to do this is pull out battery from phone. Then plug phone into usb connected to computer it will have the battery sign. Hold volume keys and power button when the screen goes black let go of power button. You will be in download mode if Odin doesn't detect it unplug usb and replug it.
Also clockwork can not read your sdcard, it only reads your interal storage.
I tried that for Odin again, and it didnt work, I also tried a hundred different methods and steps, but they all have the same problem.
Im on Windows 7 64 bit, and I get a message after about 5 seconds of plugging my download-mode phone into the computer that says "USB Device not recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it, for assistance in solving this problem, click this message"
In device manager, I see one of the devices is called "unknown device" when I plug in the phone in download mode... I tried to manually install drivers from a list, but none seem to work so far...
What if I manage to somehow put a file in the internal memory, would I be able to use the recovery console to bring the phone back to life?
EDIT: Sorry for double post

Correct. You can get into cwm recovery still correct? only if yes to first.....And when you are in cwm with phone plugged into pc if you type adb devices what comes up?
Wait... I must be confusing recovery mode with CWM... Sorry Im still new to android... How can I bring up CWM if the phone doesnt boot? Last time I brought up CWM I had to use the ROM manager when the phone was working........
OH CRAP! Now I get it, when you try to reboot into CWM, it reboots into recovery the first time, and then youll have to reboot again to get into CWM... Oh... So that means.... I tried to restore the file I downloaded using the recovery console, and thats why it crashed my phone....
Well.... Im gonna try to connect the phone to yet another computer in download mode, I doubt it will work, but I will try.
Meanwhile if you guys have any suggestions.... And sorry for my stupidity...
Oh, and as for ADB, I tried to install that on my computer, but when I go to CMD, it keeps giving me an error saying the device is offline... So Im guessing I have to turn it on somehow using the phone...?

Thegreat has helped me narrow things down... Im using a blackberry mini USB data cable, and so that COULD be the problem.
If anyone reading this has a mini USB cable that was not specifically made for the vibrant, could you please try to connect your vibrant to your computer in download mode using the cable that wasnt made for the vibrant?
Does the computer detect it?
I would really appreciate any feedback, because I dont currently have the original cable, and it would take a long time to get one shipped from samsung, not to mention the hefty pricetag because its OEM.
Help would be appreciated
I have used a blackberry specific cable when booting into dl mode and flashing odin, and it works for me.
Try this method if you haven't already, or keep trying it, sometimes doesn't work the first time.
1. Open odin on your pc an have the pit and tar fies loaded.
2. Remove battery, sd, and sim cards.
3. Plug in usb cable from pc to phone.
4. Holding both volume up and volume down, pop the battery in.
That should boot you right into dl mode. If you get the green battery image, pull battery and try it again. I have found if you hold the phone face down in your left hand when holding the volue buttons, makes it a little easier to keep the buttons depressed whie popping the battery in. Hope this helps, good luck.

Was there any resolution to this problem? I've been having the same problem for a while now. Worked around it using Wifi apps to log into my phone, as well as just using the external SD card for most media files.
Odin doesn't even recognize my phone and I've tried just about everything. I just get a USB Device not Recognized message when I plug it in and even then I don't always get that.
Thanks. I'd love to be able to odin the phone back to stock and see if the ROMs I've been using perform better after that.

[Q] Boot loop into CWM, can't enter download, system errors - please help

Can someone assist?
I was going from bionix V, and decided to Odin back to stock. I used pit 512 and a kernel here - the last one on the list (stock+froyo uvkb1) on this post - forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-870480.html
I flashed the kernel here as the pda in Odin. I thought this was the right way to go, but instead, I'm now stuck in an infinite recovery loop where I can't reboot and can't flash any thing else. I just boot into recovery over and over again. I've mounted the drive, deleted all the files, added back in backups, and tried to flash a ton of stuff, but I keep getting this error:
E: can't mount /dev/block/stl11 ( file exists)
E:cant mount CACHE: recovery/command
cant mount cache:recovery/log
cant open cache:recovery/log
re-partition, auto reboot, and f.reset time were all checked in odin, but nothing else.
Oh, and I can't just use odin to restore - I cannot get into download mode using either the three button method or the adb method.
Can anyone help? I seriously don't want to have to go buy another phone - mainly because I can't really afford that sort of thing.
EDIT: Appreciate people helping here - just to clarify, I don't need help with 3 button method or adb into download - those methods aren't working.
There are 4 ways to get into download that I know of and 3 are on the phone itself.
1. Power down. Insert USB. Hold down vol up / vol down, and hold power until phone starts to boot. Let go of power and hold down volume until download starts.
2. Using a command prompt and ADB, tell the device to reboot into download.
3. Reboot into download via the CWM recovery menu.
The 4th way is the homemade jig, which I don't have the tools to create at the moment. However, I may try it shortly here.
I've tried all 3 of the ways above, and I'm stuck in a boot loop. I'm also unable to disable voodoo.
Does anybody know anyway to do a full on clean reset of the phone with Odin, nandroid, etc? The issue is, all of these methods on the boards would work if I could get into download, BUT, the phone won't mount the proper files for whatever reason (error code in original post) and so I cannot get into download, the home screen, nothing but the cwm recovery menu.
You should get in to download mode and odin stock jdf, those files you flashed are froyo builds. I don't think it work's that way, you must flash jdf first.
I know I need to do that - problem is, I can't get into download mode. That's step one - I'm stuck in the cwm recovery menu, over and over, and can't get anywhere else. Any ideas?
Try this
how to put in download mode- sure fire way
1- phone off
2- open Odin
3- hold vol button and plug in USB.
I just posted a thread. My phone just keep going to DL when I switch battery.
Thanks, but no - that method isn't working. There are 4 ways to get into download that I know of and 3 are on the phone itself.
1. Power down. Insert USB. Hold down vol up / vol down, and hold power until phone starts to boot. Let go of power and hold down volume until download starts.

I really appreciate you trying to help, it's the right answer for a lot of issues, but just not this one.
power off phone
pull out battery
GRAB THIS STUFF : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047087
turn on odin
attach phone to pc with usb cable
now while holding down both volume buttons put battery back in.
now you should be in download mode and go back to stock with odin from here!
make sure u put the proper .pit and .pda file in there proper places on odin and ur set to go.
Enjoy and also make sure u have the proper samsung drivers
What if you can get in dl mode but odin won't read your phone? I have the correct drivers intalled. It was working fine til I upgrated to cm7. Now my phone is stuck at vibrant screen and can't get in recovery. The phone boots in dl mode but its not recognized by my pc. Any ideas if I'm screwed?

May have bricked my vibrant.

So I got my hands on a vibrant the other day... fresh out my friends closet. It was running stock eclair.
I successfully rooted and flashed cwm via rom manager.
Then I tried to flash Asgard 3.2 via cwm but I got a bootloop with a woman's voice saying "convert data partition, not enough space on partition.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for the help guys.
If it helps I forgot to mention that I can't get into recovery either. Both volume buttons and power just makes the screen black and the capacitives stay lit.
Volume down and power just cause to boot normally.
What should I do?

Anyone?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
OK, First of all, your NOT bricked because it can still power up
.AIO Baywolfs program to get it into DL mode and restore it to JFD. Eclair 2.1 this will be the only time you will allow repartition.
After that reinstall Rom Manager, flash CW recovery again.
Then put it into recovery mode again, and select reinstall packages, may have to do it twice, then you'll have the green menu for flashing ROM's
Then select the Rom u want to install, if its in zip form ya gotta do it with CWM
If its in a tar file use ODIN 1.71 above, and don't forget to add the 512 pit file also, don't repartition the drives un-tick it
Also whether you CWM or odin it, just make sure in Odin un tick re-boot after install, at CWM select wipe data/factory reset then do the cache, same thing when odin's finished, otherwise you'll prolly get a boot loop.
Then go to re-boot and let it simmer for about 10 mins average to allow everything to be right before you start flipping thru it.
Thank u so so much very informative post. Only one problem: I think the USB port might be messed up because when I plug it in I get a "USB device not recognized error." That'd with the Samsung drivers installed. I rooted through a flahable zip. I guess ill try with Odin to see if I can get any USB functionality once I'm home. If not do I have any other options??

Yes, HOW TO GET INTO DOWNLOAD MODE
* Read the noob guide if you are asking why you would need this *
On PC, open ODIN
Connect USB to PC (not phone)
Pull Battery on phone and replace it
Press and hold in both volume buttons
Connect USB to phone, wait at least 3 seconds (still holding volume)
Release when you see the Yellow Triangle
Remember to use Odin you must be in DL mode first, before you attach the USB cable to the phone, otherwise Odin wont detect the phone , once you see the yellow high-lite in the top left corner of Odin with a com port addy, you can relax because you can flash the phone .
Also start with the stock Eclair JFD 2.1 tar file and the 512 pit file, allow repartition, just this one time, and allow it to auto reboot as well, after that first restore, and other subsequent flashes, un tick partician and auto reboot, so you have control over wiping data and cache, BEFORE rebooting the first time with that brand new ROM flash to avoid boot looping!
Thanks so much for ur help thus far man. But my suspicions about the usb port being messed up have been confirmed, I think.
I pulled the battery, replaced it, had odin opened and usb connected to pc (not phone).
Then with both volumes held i plugged the phone in. the same "USB device not recognized" message pops up on pc, and then the woman's voice "convert data partition, not enough space on partition."
Starting to lose hope man... what do you think?
I think you may need new Samsung Drivers. Go to the guide below and go under the section called "4. Odin" and look for the link to get Samsung Drivers. Hope this helps you!

You need the proper USB drivers
sounds like you have messed up USB drivers.
i freaked out about that stuff too the first time i flashed.
here's what I did, it may help you.
1) delete any Samsung Composite USB devices in your Device manager.
2) pull your sim card, sd card and battery
3 connect your USB cord to the computer and phone
4) hold both volume up and volume down
5) insert battery now
6) you should be in download mode now (see yellow triangle with lightning bolt and android)
7) run Odin and flash stock JFD.
Guys thanks so much for all your help.
Unfortunately I have tried everything suggested here and still have had no luck getting any USB functionality out of this phone.
I still don't understand why I can't just get into recovery (i.e. not something through usb) to fix the partition issue myself to get Linda to stop *****ing.
Install Samsung kies, or uninstall and then reinstall if you already have it. It will delete and reinstall your drivers. You have a driver issue
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Tried the kies suggestion... still same.
Just to reiterate:
I plug it in with battery in and pressing no buttons, and get:
on pc - usb device not recognized
on phone - nada
I plug it in holding both volumes and but battery back in after and get:
on pc - usb device not recognized
on phone - loading circle, linda *****ing and then charging battery screen
Anymore suggestions???
Have you tried a different USB cable? different Ports on your computer?

[Q] not sure what to do

Hello,
I am not sure what happened, but here is the story.
First, I tried to root the phone using the 1-click method, only to later realize that it does not work as the phone I had was running the latest OTA update. I wanted to reset my phone to factory default and I proceeded to do that.
Now, when my phone starts I see the small recovery menu and a lot of red letters stating that the system could not mount, find or open recovery directories, files or logs. (On the screen is this info Enter ok key,Select vol up/down Rebot system now, apply update from scard, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition But nothing will move courser, then blow that in red is E:failed to open/res/recovery.fstab(no such file or directory) E:unknown volume for path[/cache/recovery/command with a lot more then in yellow letters #manual mode# and the same messages)
When I enter the download mode, and tried to use Odin or ADB, neither one can detect my device. I tried installing different samsung drivers on my system to no solution to being able to detect the device. Is this due to Windows not being able to initiate the drivers correctly, because when I connect the phone in Download mode, Windows has a pop-up show up that says "Drivers not recognized, your device might not work properly".
Does this mean the phone is bricked or is there something I can do to restore the phone?

I tried installing different samsung drivers on my system to no solution to being able to detect the device. Is this due to Windows not being able to initiate the drivers correctly, because when I connect the phone in Download mode, Windows has a pop-up show up that says "Drivers not recognized, your device might not work properly".
Does this mean the phone is bricked or is there something I can do to restore the phone?

did you try a different usb port? also I'd try heimdall and see if that works and sees your phone. which stock odin package are yup trying to flash?
I did manage to recover to the stock EH03 rom, by doing the first couple of steps in section 4 of the Guide for installing Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070).
At this point, I cannot get root on my phone. I tried using 1 click root methods and those fail to install SU. I tried using the manual method of pushing rage.bin file using ADB, but that also failed.
I tried flashing some of the ROMs from section 4 of the above guide, but they cant seem to install on my phone. When I try to install through recovery, I get the picture of the android on the side and a failed install and either get stuck with the Samsung logo or a recovery boot loop.
Am I missing a step or something in order to root the phone or load a custom ROM? Is it possible that my phone cannot be rooted due to a lock somewhere?
Thanks.
