Roms not flashing - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I have tried flashing several roms through TWRP and every time TWRP tells me FAILED. I get a failed to verify zip. then error flashing the rom.zip.
I have downloaded and re-downloaded several different roms and get the same errors every time. How do I get past this? BTW: I have wiped all every time .
Any thoughts? I would love to run different roms.

Are you checking the MD5 checksum prior to installing? Also, which version of TWRP are you running? Make sure it ends in .2 and NOT .3 as the latter version was pulled due to instability and other issues. Are you trying to install from internal or external SD?

No, How do I check the MD5?
TWRP ends in 2
And the external sd card I added. But I could move it to internal if that would help?

I usually store ROMs and mods on my external SD, so that's no big deal...unless you have a bad SD card.
Checking MD5s is very important to ensure you get an exact copy of the original file, and avoid a bad download. You can verify the MD5 checksum of a file using TWRP, but I usually use the application "Android File Verifier" which can be found on the Play Store. The original post on ROM threads typically has the MD5 for each download listed, but if not it could be on the download page of the file host. Check the characters and make sure your file matches the listed MD5 on the ROM page.
If all else fails, you could try a different recovery (Clockwork Mod is another popular choice) or reinstall TWRP using Goo Manager.

Unable to install custom ROM on mini pro

I really hope someone can help me out here. I have x10mini pro. I am on stock rom,build2.1.1.a.0.6,standard (never tried custom yet) but now that I see a lot of interesting Rom's I would like to try one. Here's what I did; installed Xrecovery via AAIS, then CWM and now the dual-recovery zip. (I also tried xrec/cwm seperately) So I can chose to use XREC or CWM. Now here's my problem; I am unable to install ANY Rom I have tried so far (gingerbread roms's i.e Gintonic.se but also 2.1.1.Clean.0.0 which is a normal 2.1 rom and flashable via xrec only) won't install.
Everytime I get:
cant open /sdcard/Roms/x.zip 'installation aborted' (bad) I have tried a different SD card (standard) but the same problem persists....I can not believe I am unable to install a custom ROM but I am completely stuck with my problem. I am rooted/xrec working/cwm working...I can install small updates (ie cwm via xrec&dual-recovery.zip) but NOT a complete Rom...Whywhywhy...It is driving me crazy!!! Can someone from this fantastic forum help me please?
Hi u find all ansers in q and a this is dev thread bro
sh*t, thought I was in general section....sorry!(maybe a mod can move the thread?) But as you can see from my tryings I have read the q&A and a lot of threads, otherwise would not have been able to install xrec/cwm...but installing a rom just won't work...any suggestions?

Thanks for trying to help me as well mukptl! How can I check MD5 after copying? You know what is also strange? when I make a backup in cwm i get an error saying: "no /sdcard/.android_secure found.
Skipping backup of applications on external storage...backing up cache.... no sd-ext found (normal, dont have ext partition on my sd's)
generating md5 sum....backup complete!" I am able to run recovery with this though. Still not able to install any rom's I have tried to install via cwm/xrecovery...not even a 2.1 rom
Did you download on PC and then transfer to SD-card or did you download directly to your phone?
I expierences that once also with a ROM downloaded directly to my phone.... a fresh new download on my PC instead fixed it, and then transfer to phone via USB-cable.
Can you open the zip-file on your computer (just to see if it's valid)?
don#t copy your rom in a file folder
only copy the zip to SD
like /sdcard/

wen you back up your phone with cwm its back up also your app on your sd ext if you have so if you dont have sd ext then it say no sd ext found
thats nomal i think
for md5 check there is many software to calculate md5 just search on google and download on your pc
then calculate md5 of you downloaded zip on your pc
then copy the zip on your sd card then calculate md5 of the zip on sd card
if its comes dif then previous one then your zip isnt copyed well
I downloaded on my PC first. I tried with rom on my sd card directly as well...tried with 3 sd cards (class 2/4)...all the same problem. Somehow xrecovery/cwm can not open these files...but I am able to install small update files (also when they are in a directory on my sd) for instance cwm recovery/dual-recovery.zip ...same file extension, same way of coping to my sd...somehow it must have something to do with the files/sd card but what?? Went back to stock via seus...xrecovery via aais, installed cwm via xrecovery...same problem still...I am going insane...I really want to be able to install a custom rom

edit: ok md5 does not match between file on my pc and file on my sd..really do not know why but looking for it..maybe I should extract and then create the archive directly to my sd card or something? any help is welcome!
Edit2: I finally found a solution, it was simple in the end.. I formatted sd again, downloaded files again en checked them after moving to sd. All is fine now, I am running gintonic by slade..perfect so far! Thread can be closed. Thanks for your help!
how do you disconnect your phone from the PC again?

[Q] ROMs won't flash, totally stumped

I am stuck, I have been working on this for hours and can't get out of this. I am coming from Illuminate. The tablet started acting up so I decided to go back to a Froyo based ROM. The problem is that every ROM I try and apply get's flagged as corrupt. Clockwork shows file corrupt/installation aborted. I am able to nvflash back to a stock build to either boot loader. I even did a stock build without clockwork, then tried an upgrade using the update.zip and recovery folder and it failed as well because of the corruption. I have downloaded half a dozen ROMs and they all get marked corrupt. I have had problems with the USB connection to the tablet being a little unstable. Transfer speeds are mediocre and some file copies end up being zero bytes. I realize that the file copy could be getting corrupted but why would nvflash work through the USB cable?
Just an update, I tried using the micro sd card from my phone to copy a ROM to the internal SD card and got same corruption error. This appears to be an issue with the tablet and not the files. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try doing the rom update from the external sd card. NVflash to stock without CWM, then go here http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/rom.htm and follow the instructions in "Flashing a rom without CWM", Part B, Option II.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will try this tonight when I get home.

[Q] Back ups fail on micro sd.

Can anyone please enlighten me on why I seem to only be able to do a successful restore from internal sd? Sometimes i can restore from micro but not enough to call reliable. Is it that my card is bad, or am i doing something wrong, or is this normal? Its getting older i guess, and am going to buy a 32 gig card soon so hopefully that helps. It usually says that there's an error restoring data or md5 sum mismatch. Thanks in advance

the mtd5 might be an indication that you renamed the folder or that already the creation process went wrong. After creation of the backup the mtd5 sums are calculated and stored. Before restoring it is chacked that the actual mtd5 sum which is again calculated corresponds to the ones saved in the folder. This protects your phone. So either something went wrong during first calculation of the data or something changed (folder, name whatever) so that the data stored are not exactly the same as the data present
Thanks for replying so quickly! I always rename my backups so that i know which rom it was lol! Funny thing is, is that sometimes it works on external and sometimes not but always on internal. Ill try not renaming them and see if that helps...
Does changing the kernel affect the backup at all? That is why I like to stick with my main daily rom on primary cuz each rom wants to flash a kernel and modem, wish they implemented an option to not choose. I guess the aroma installer is coming along with that tho.
so of course kernel affects it, as the kernel normally brings the CWM-recovery version.
so also it depends on the CWM-Recovery version how to cope with renamed backups.
In some renaming works (if backup is made in several tar.files and for each there is a mtd5) in some not, but this is treated by CWM recovery.
So savest way is not to rename the folders but to give the name when taking the NAND, e.g. by starting the backup from the CWM app but not from recovery
Thank you for clarifying that for me !! Is there any to use cwm app from second rom? I find i cannot, it just reboots me to recovery... what about the online backup method? I cannot name the backup through that either?

[Q] rooted long ago, now want CM

i rooted my NT about a year ago when i got it (i don't recall the specific method used), and have been clunking along with it for months, but now i want to install CM 7, 9, or 10.
most of the guides start with "Stock 1.4.3" but my software version says "9.9.9" after root (iirc, it was 1.4.1 when i received it).
can i use these guides with the rooted 9.9.9 version i have?
or are there special instructions for 9.9.9 (maybe an abbreviated version since i am already rooted?)
or do i somehow have to go from 9.9.9 back to 1.4.1 or 1.4.3?
thanks for any assistance, and if you need more information from me, i'll see if i can provide it.
That 9.9.9 just means that you've blocked ota update and it doesn't matter at all.

Yes, the installation will over-write whatever is currently in emmc (and that's why it's recommended that you back up the current config).
FWIW, your buddy can keep his stock ROM and try running CM10 off an SD card (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35946501#post35946501), and decide later whether to replace his stock ROM with it.
I have complete stock 1.4.3 and have been running off of a CM7 sd card since the beginning of summer. I'm ready to upgrade to the emmc version of CM10, but do I need to root the BN ROM first? I want to install this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773362 I would "burn" the recovery.img to my sd card and install the .zip onto the emmc, right? This is my first time flashing an internal ROM and want to be sure.

No, you need to first create a “bootable” clockworkmod (CWM) recovery SD, then rename the referenced recovery-0.08.3.img to recovery.img and copy it as well as referenced cm10-acclaim-0.08.3-full-of-bugs.zip and the file gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip from http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip to the card. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35669871&postcount=1 for an overview of the process for installing CM10 ROM on the NT internal emmc.

Thanks for the help! I'm a little confused though, do I use the SD card or the emmc version of CWM to make the bootable SD? Does the emmc version flash CWM to the nook and from there do I install the files from a SD, or does it boot from the SD and allow me to flash ROMs to the emmc?
Also, if I'm using the CWM .img what's the purpose of the recovery.img on the card if all I'm flashing are the .zips? I would imagine the ROM .zip instructs it to flash the recovery.img but the CM10 thread says you can use an older CM9 recovery.img.
Sorry for all the questions! Thanks again!

The recovery version you need to put on the SDcard is the sdcard version (not the emmc version); recovery is the tool that manages the flashing of the ROM/gapps zip files onto the NT, clearing of cache, backing up current ROM & apps, etc.
The emmc version of recovery is for flashing onto the NT and is used presumably for "performing recovery" without external SDcard. Some ROM packages include a recovery.img but not all do (in which case the recovery.img on the NT remains the stock recovery).
I just spent the last hour and a half trying to get a bootable CWM 6 sd card. First I thought I would need to boot into CWM but couldn't get that to work (I vaguely remember doing that to set up my CM7 SD card). Then I realized I can boot into cyanoboot and flash it through that. Using various methods, including the link you provided, I can't find a definite step-by-step guide. In the guide you provided I followed the steps but am stuck on step 5. When I go into SDC Recovery I don't see backup options anywhere, I see a list of recovery options. Here's what I see http://i3.minus.com/inttvFzHpVF88.jpg
Here are the files on the SD card http://i1.minus.com/ibgXFOKRf8DObb.png
Do you have any idea what's going on?
Did you press the Home button "N" to select SDC Recovery? If so, do you have screen-capture of resulting screen?

I tried to get back to the same screen to take a pic when it finally booted into CWM! I guess it takes a few tries to get it to boot. I chose the backup option and it started copying files for a few minutes until it got stuck on a file. It's been stuck on it for the last hour. http://i.minus.com/ivJa6tBF5tl9i.JPG
If I turn it off I have the chance of corrupting the file but since I don't really plan to go back to stock it wouldn't really matter anyway. The card might be full, but I only had like 100 MB of files on there.
If you don't plan to go back to stock, there is no need to back up (worst case you can get the stock ROM from https://github.com/succulent/acclaim_recovery_sdcard).
If you have more problems you might want to check out your sd card (if need be reformatting it with sd formatter https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/).

The CM10 thread says to now install CWM to emmc using fastboot. I know it's optional but I want it just in case. I looked it up and installed fastboot but which recovery should I use? The recovery-0.08.3 from the thread or the CWM recovery?
Yes, although it's probably easier to use your same CWM SD (which you just used to flash CM10 ROM and gapps) to flash one of the two flash_CM9-10_CWM_v6.0.1.2_8-16gb_tools_emmc.zip or flash_CM9-10_TWRP_v2.2.2.0_8-16gb_tools_emmc.zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640958.

Works like a charm, thanks again!
I have one last question: Is there a way I can increase the 1GB data partition? I know android needs space for apps and such but I think a 4GB data partition is reasonable. I have a DVD of Ubuntu so I can access GParted if I need to. If you don't know or don't think I should mess with it that's completely fine, I have a 32GB micro SD that I'm going to use (my current CM7 card) but just want the extra internal space.
The data partition is for apps you download, the media content can go to the Nook media partition or SDcard. If you have many apps with large storage footprint you will likely need extra space. There are tools and methods for repartitioning on XDA (I have not needed to use them), just do a Google search I am sure they will turn up.

Stuck on the Samsung text!

Hi SGP users!
Last night, I installed the Jellybean CM10 ROM (the Nightly one). I also installed the GApps that came with the post. So I booted to Recovery Mode, I tried installing the ROM (Install zip from sd card>Install zip from internal sd card>downloads>the jb rom), but it says "INSTALLATION ABORTED". I repeated to install but to no avail. I rebooted the system to research on this, and the user said that you have to format system and try again. I booted to Recovery Mode again, formatted the system (it says system formatted or something like that), and installed the ROM for the nth time. It still says INSTALLATION ABORTED. Now, I tried installing the GApps zip file, and it worked (I installed the zip file because I want to know if all the files on the internal sd card are broken). So I tried installing the ROM again. Aborted. I rebooted the system, and now it's stuck with the white Samsung text! I don't know why, so I just drained the battery with the Samsung text still ongoing.
Today, I'm pretty sure the battery is drained (there's no text anymore), so I tried charging it. Nada, it's stuck with the loading logo on the battery image.
I think my device is bricked, I don't know. I researched it and all I found was the BootLoop. Is that the error on my SGP? I want to know if my device is bricked, and what caused this. Help?
Its not a brick..reboot to recovery (home + volume up + power ) and install some ics rom for player ..boot to that rom and then go again to recovery and install jb rom. That is offcourse if you have 5.0

transfer the zip files to your SD card; use those files to flash. Also, now, can you get into recovery/download mode? Like after having removed the player from the USB?
just curious- did you originally download the ROM/app package to your device (ie /mnt/sdcard/????) and flash, or did you place the files in the SD card (ie /mnt/sdcard/external_sd [or something like that]) before flashing?
===
Edit: Ok, so literacy kicked in and I carefully read your OP. My guess, and I could be wrong, though I doubt it, is that the installation aborted because you flashed the packages from your internal SD and NOT your external SD (ie the actual SD card). Since the ROM rearranges directory tree (or whatever), it would stand to reason that the installation aborted during the installation process since it could no longer locate the zip. Ie it is no longer /mnt/sdcard/downloads (or wherever), but rather /storage/sdcard0/downloads. I'm guessing that CWM bypasses this and accesses your SD card directly, rendering installation from your actual SD card immune to these effects.
So, try again (assuming your device can still go into CWM recovery) and flash the packages in the proscribed order, but this time, from the ACTUAL SD card, and NOT internal. I "upgraded" directly from a GB rom, having flashed the zip files from the external SD card, and suffered no problems, so I know it isn't necessary to go through ICS. Good luck!
This is a helpful one! I'm sorry, but one last question, (I'm a newbie sorry!) how do you move the zip files to the external SD Card? And if I do that, and it flashed successfully, do I have to start again if I remove my SD card? Really sorry for the questions, but I really want to know.
Thank you so much! Since my computer didn't recognize my SGP (suckish USB cable lol), I placed my external SD card on my cellphone and plugged the cellphone into the computer to download the zip files (I downloaded them directly to the card). Afterwards I placed my SD in my SGP and flashed--It's working, thank you!!!

This is a helpful one! I'm sorry, but one last question, (I'm a newbie sorry!) how do you move the zip files to the external SD Card? And if I do that, and it flashed successfully, do I have to start again if I remove my SD card? Really sorry for the questions, but I really want to know.

All you need to do is use a file manager to move zip to sdcard1. Make sure you follow the steps in op of rom.

Thanks for the tip! I switched to JB ParanoidAndroid already because the Gapps on CM10 Nightly don't appear. Thank you anyway!
