I am using a Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300 which is rooted from CF-Root 6.4 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238) and I have some questions before I flash my first custom ROM. I have researched these questions on Google, YouTube and through all these threads and I cannot find any answers. Therefore any help on these would be much appreciated.
1) Do I need to update my CWM Recovery to the newest version before I flash Jellybam 8.3.0? (P.S. the CF-Root thread states "Not compatible with ROM Manager ! Use the CWM Manager provided instead (installed by CF-Root automatically)" I assume this means I cannot update CWM Recovery through ROM Manager.
2) Will flashing this ROM remove my root privileges? Will I have to re-root through Odin again?
3) Do I have to use Triangle Away if I manage to successfully flash Jellybam ROM? This is because I heard resetting your flash counter is dangerous.
4) Do I need to have BusyBox installed? Tried to research this and I do not understand what this does.
5) Are there any other precautions to take bearing in mind this is going to be my first flashing of a custom ROM?

1 please don't bother with rom manager but you need latest cwm anyway (or better yet, philz advanced cwm in my signature) to be sds safe
2 root is in the rom. When you flash a rom, the entire rom is replaced - root files included. However, custom roms are all rooted anyway so you'd be replacing the root with root.
Please note, jellybam discussion is banned on xda
3 its not really dangerous. It needs to be done before returning it to stock
4 many root apps use busybox to function. Most custom roms have busybox anyway
5 read, read, read. Read all the stickies and guides in general. Read them twice. Before doing anything you don't understand, search. If you can't find, ask. Its easier to teach knowledge than to fox broken phones

1. Like rootSU allready suggested, use PhilZ Recovery. Visit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2002953 and read the first and second post. These explain step by step how to do it.
2. SDS stands for Sudden Death Syndrom. For more information on this topic visit this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1993044
There you can also check if your phone could be affected.
3. Sorry bro, can't help you on that one since I don't know myself.
As for 3 jellybam, I didn't see it myself - but apparently the developer used the work of others without credit. I read, passing it as his own work. I wasn't here so I can't say anything more than that

I am not new to android as I have had multiple android devices, however I purchased a SGS II from a friend and he rooted it. However, he does not remember what software he used to root it. So I used the one click method and it said it unrooted it no problem, however superuser and CWM is still installed and JD plus says it has root access. The kernel is XXKG3 and I installed and used it no problem. However, again when I go to CWM under current kernel: unknown. I tried everything I can think of, searched these forums the best I can and I still need help. Can anyone help me? If so, greatly appreciated.

You have not searched properly. All you had to do was use the search button use a few keywords and boom you have the results. But anyway here i go.
To root go into Chainfires thread that is in the original development and look for cf-root kernels. Flash that through odin and it gives you root and cwm recovery and manager. Once you have done that it basically roots your phone. Now if you want to unroot all you have to do is flash official firmware from Intratechs thread again in original development section and your phone will be unrooted..Guides on how to do that are in both threads and at the first page. Now this is were you come in

You douchebag do you ever turn of asshole mode. you need to flash clockwork recovery into the system when you click CWM it prompt you to INSTALL CWM recovery version either SGH-I777 or ATT Samsung Galaxy S2, First off I know plenty of CWM because I used it on my, mytouch however if you didn't notice..
SGH-I777 is the ATT Samsung galaxy s2 which is why I am asking..

I dont know what CWM Rom is, but you don't use ROM manager to flash your first recovery.....you flash a KERNEL with CWM built in......its like that for ALL Samsung Galaxy S devices....always has been.

Okay I think we are failing to communicate I flashed entropys root with pc odin then I turned on rom manager to flash cwm recovery which is exactly what I asked in this thread I see no stickies or threads saying otherwise if there is I don't see it and if this is going to cause a problem what is the possible remedies

I'm a noob, I flashed my first ROM last weekend, and even I can see that you haven't done enough reading.
If you must know without going through the trouble of reading, flashing ANYTHING that's not stock will TRIP YOUR COUNTER. Also, using ROM manager is a NO NO.
To avoid tripping your flash counter and also to avoid bootloops, install Mobile Odin Lite or Pro (attached to the OP of this thread). I suggest you thoroughly read that thread a couple times before doing anything. Use Mobile Odin to flash any kernel that is compatible with your current ROM and includes CWM; if you're running GB, second post here gives you two such kernels, and if you're on ICS, use this. Now you can load any CWM flashable roms/kernels/modems/what have you onto the phone, boot into CWM recovery and install from there.
If you've already tried using ROM manager, I have no idea how to help you or fix your phone. Try searching around, I'm sure there's a thread that covers that.

a version of Codeworkx's kernels and solved my CWM issues..

4) I have read something about flash counters. Which one of the two methods messes up with them ?
5) I ve read something about locked boot loaders. Which one is not compatible with them and how can i determine if i have one on a stock non-rooted phone ?
BTW i own a galaxy s3 (GT-i9300 & Android version of 4.1.2)

=> If I remember well, the difference is the included/excluded custom recovery, hence if you want a customer recovery use cf-root, if you want to keep your stock one, use cf-auto-root

see my asnwers to 1 - 3) above in the quote, for 4 & 5 I am not 100% sure, hence I do not want to give you advice there but the forum got a lot of people that know that stuff for sure

5) in general, you do not have locked bootloaders in I9300.
additionally, I'd not recommend you to flash anything which does not contain SDS fix. Effectively, as Chainfire abandoned some parts of the project, and as recovery includes kernel - I'd not flash CFrecovery now, but I'd look for something newer.

I had rooted my SG2 (AT&T) to ZedoMaxStock Kernel. What a mistake! No wireless, misbehaving Bluetooth connection etc etc. So now I need to get back to factory settings and / or flash a good kernel, so I can once again have root access. I've started to build apps for the phone, that's why I need root.
Any help appreciated.
Go read the stickies in the Q&A and development sections. Reading the stickies first would have warned you to stay away from Zedomax.
Included in the stickies will be how to return to stock rooted ICS.

If you flashed zedomax, don't you already have root? If so, all you need to do is install mobile odin lite on your phone and flash any kernel you want.

Exactly. That's what I've been telling everyone. Flashing a kernel like siyah gives you access to cwm which is what u can use to flash anything you want. People seem to want to root it then install a kernel that roots it AGAIN. Making it too complicated

Hello guys, since I'm not really a rooting expert (previously I rooted a motorola device), I would like to ask for some advices regarding rooting our S3 because I have only one phone and I can't afford to brick it.
1. So basically I'm referring to the guide here. However, that rooting guide is for Samsung Galaxy S3 on I9300XXUGNA7 Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, which is different from my build number (I've checked software update on my device over OTA and Kies3 but it says I have the latest firmware), will it works for my phone? Also in the guide it says to use odin3 v3.09, however in CF_auto_root page here it says to use odin3 v1.85, so which one is working for my device or which one is better?
2. Next I would like to ask is it necessary to install CWM recovery to replace the stock one? After searching around, I found that there are some people who installed CWM recovery even before rooting, is that even possible? So basically to install CMW recovery I think I will follow the steps here, is this working for my device?
3. Okay I know this is the dumbest question... but is there anything else I need to do after the above 2 steps (flashing kernel, modem etc.)?

Flashing your phone in any way doesn't guarantee not bricking it, see this thread

Download Odin
Download CF-AutoRoot for your phone
Read the link on rooting
It is really straight forward just read up on it but don't read too much into it a frighten yourself

Great that thread helps a lot! I cleared most of my doubts now, but one more question please, after rooting, I wished to install ported apps like S5 launcher and accuweather, and in order to install these I need to flash from recovery. Is it possible to flash this using stock recovery? Or I need to install custom recovery like CMW?
You can't install anything with stock recovery, you'll need a custom recovery.
Make sure you have a full nandroid and efs backup before you flash anything -ported apps can break the framework and produce bootloops.
Seriously though, all this information is available in the sticky or by searching -why do need people to write it all out for you?

Thanks for your information. I did search around and try to understand the things myself, but still there are some doubts remain, that's why I opened this thread hoping that someone can clear the doubts for me. This is my only phone and I really can't afford another (I'm from a low-income family), I just want to make sure everything is alright so that I don't mess up my device. Thanks for your understanding
If this is relevant for Samsung galaxy s3, I got this done the other day using Odin to unlock and root, ran the root app to confirm root. The ROM manager to found CWM recovery flash. So far all good, should take 5 mins in all but an hour in prep and homework.

Hello! I agree that it would be better NOT to use Rom Manager. Many users had problems because of it. The safest way, in my opinion, is to flash a custom kernel using Odin. For example, I had stock rom and used Odin to flash boeffla kernel (not advertising it, just saying what I did) because that kernel had both a .tar version and a .zip one. I downloaded the .tar version and flashed it with Odin by putting the .tar file in the PDA column. That's for root.
For recovery I'm using PhilZTouch and I love it. It supports both JB and KK roms and that is preety cool. Also it's full touch so I don't need to stress my hardware buttons. It's also available as .tar file so you can flash it with Odin just like the kernel.
That's how I'd recommend anyone to root and install a custom recovery on a Sammy phone because I believe it's the safest way. PS: before launching Odin make sure the phone is NOT connected to the PC and that Kies isn't running in the background (use Task Manager to check) Goodluck! !! :thumbup::thumbup:

Wow, that's great. By saying unlock, do you mean unlock the bootloader? Wait, is the bootloader locked in our S3?

Currently struggling with deodexing/odexing the stock rom, after reading around I can differentiate between the odex and deodex rom, still digging on how to deodex a rom though (since I want to install some S5 mods). After searching around, it seems like titanium backup can do the deodexing/odexing just nice Gonna do some more preparation, hopefully I can have my device rooted by this week
You could flash PhilZ Recovery and make a nand backup of your rom. This way you'd have an emergency copy if something goes wrong or if you break something in the system. Just my thought
