[Q] Noobie question - Samsung Galaxy Mega

I got an AT&T Galaxy Mega I think its the i527, but I'm using it with MetroPCS. I wanted to flash a custom ROM but I'm totally new to this world. :silly:
Hopefully somebody could help me.
1.- What would happen if I do a factory reset? (would I be able to use it on MetroPCS)
2.- Since MetroPCS and T-Mobile are compatible could I use a ROM like this one?
And by the way, when I plug my cell phone to my laptop it starts to charge but I can't open files its like not recognizing it does anybody know whats up?
btw2: I still have the unlocking code would I be able to use it again?

You may need to install drivers for computer to recognize, but mine does that automatically. If rooted, you may need to re-install.
Factory reset is just going to erase everything.
If it is an ATT model i527, there is no recovery for it yet and I beleive that transends all unlocking.
Do the smart thing for a noobie. Dont flash a darn thing until you educate yourself. Read read read. Google your questions. Put yourself in a situation where you understand what your doing. Dont guess or follow someone else unless you are confident in there level of expertise. Nobody will replace your phone here.
Post all information.
Example......you did not say whether your phone is upgraded to 4.4 or still running 4.2 ?????
1 little detail can mean the biggest difference.
Good luck
As always, I will check back, because I am still learning too.

[Q] Trouble unlocking i777 after root.

I have root, the first time it froze and didn't sent a test correctly. So I tried it again using Super one. Now I have superuser. Tried both apps on the market and neither one seem to have worked thus yet.
When I try Herolz Galaxy s unlock It is unable to copy EFS, All it says is Done, Error, Not saved. And yes there is an SD card present.
The GS2 unlocker also available on the market will fart around for over 5 minutes and say unlock code not found.
What gives am I doing something wrong? I have tried it with the sim in and with it out. Using Family mobile from Walmart, so I am guessing Tmobile sim card.
Please give me some other root around this.

I didn't know ti wasn't stock. LOL . I just bought it used from a shop here yesterday as am upgrade from gs1. Could you possibly direct me in the right direction as I am unsure what part you are talking about mot being stock.
Than ks in advance
you know you'll only get Edge on Tmo bands.
KH7 is stock, but you stated you have root. Did you do it? if not then check the android Development forums on how to get back to stock. and start the root proccess again.
I got the root through superoneclick. It seemed it did ok as the secong time I went through it said it was already rooted. as for the crappy internet it won't really matter here as we don't even have 3g here in this town for t-mobile anyhow.
if I un-root and re flash back to stock just using the button press combo work? Any why does it only get edge on tmobile?

Unroot and back to stock would require Odin/Heimdall.
Only gets Edge on Tmo because its an at&t phone. different bands for 3g.
I have used Super One Click in the past, but its just easier to flash a rooted kernal in Odin/Heimdall, then flash a custom ROM via CWM.
Back to stock is mainly because SuperOneClick is an old tool. and then starting fresh with the latest.
But I had no need to unlock my phone, but from what I've heard its very simple, and most dont have any issues. using the app from the market
I am not afraid of ODIN. I have done that in the past but I did have a huge problem with the GS1 installing an older kernel. I just about bricked the phone. I had to use the HEimdall or what ever it was to get back in it.
On these phone with a custom kernal and rom will it automatically unlock the phone? I am just afraid of using the wrong one and in this particualr section I am sure as to where to go. It doesn't give a whole lot of detail and with the cryogen mod thing it is getting places where I am not sure if I want to really try that. I would but the information is spaced out so much I am afraid of missing something and buggering everything up. What should I have to worry about when doing this?
Also it is the software unlocking I am having problems with.

Custom kernal will not unlock the phone to be used on a network other than at&t.
Software unlock? assuming you mean using s/w to unlock the device, yes thats the way i understood this thread. I cant really tell ya much about that, but i have heard that its easy and works fine, which is why you should go back to stock first, to get rid of anything messy leftover from using an old rooting method.

AT&T hardware handles different frequencies than T-Mobile hardware. It's a limitation of the phone's capability to receive the signal.

Trouble Unlocking After Odin Root of
I rooted my phone using Odin and the Siyah-v3.4.2-nomswap-I777.tar file in the PDA. The phone passed, and it reloads with the triangle on the start up as expected. However, it then says "enter network lock control key". It has nothing to do with the sim, as the sim works in another phone. I have done the process several times, running odin back to the original factory settings with I777UCLE5_I777ATTLE5_I777UCLE5_HOME.tar.md5
Could someone please tell me how to get the phone unlocked?
I have done this process before with another i777 phone, and it worked fine.

Need some help here...

Please forgive me if there are other threads.. But this is an old phone and al ow-activity device...
I bought a Verizon Mogul from ebay. Was working just fine until I decided I wanted to flash a ROM onto it. The ONLY tool I could fine from any tutorial was some titan unlock tool... All it seemed to do was bring me to the bootloader. Well, now I'm stuck in the bootloader and can't get out. I tried this exit bootloader program for Windows, but it doesn't think my phone is actually plugged in (not compatible with Windows 7?)
Other threads have suggested using some kind of .nbh file, but there is no region of the internet of which this mysitcal file exists. What do I do?
And finally... can someone provide the files needed that every tutorial says you need to flash a rom on this phone? They don't seem to exist on the internet either.
I realize this phone is old. But I like it because I can use it without a data plan
Thank you to anyone who helps.
There are some tutorials - I'll look to see what I have later. I haven't used this phone in awhile

Need Help Please Bricked Note i717 Yesterday

I have a Galaxy Note i717 from AT&T that I rooted. Worked great.
Yesterday I upgraded to ICS via Kies. Worked great.
Then I proceeded to root it again using odin.
Unfortunately even after all the things done it now will not boot up at all.
All I get is the S a m s u n g logo. I can put it into boot mode and the computer see's it but nothing more.
If anyone can point me to any rom/bootloader/ etc. I would be most grateful.
Or just let me know what to do and where to get roms. I did search and there are many for the i700.
I guess I need a bootloader and rom right?
Sorry folks. Point me somewhere else will have to get another phone.
T h a n k s ...
Others would tell you to look in the dev section for the stock rom (its usually called something like "in case of brick) I've had issues issues getting it to work but Im certain it was user error as to why it didn't work for me. But another option that I think could work would be to get your phone into download mode and run the ics upgrade thru kies again. You'll lose everything in your phone but I think it'll get your phone up and running again. But before you do any other that...did you make a nandroid back of? Or have you downloaded any roms to your phone because if you did you can just enter cwm and reflash any rom you may have or just flash your backup, backups are so important when doing these sort of things, saves a lot of head aches.
Edit: after reading your post again it says your phone messed up after rooting, try and re run the root file thru Odin, I kinda sorta remember reading something similar to this were people had issue trying to root. I'll try and find the thread.

this happened due to rooting with the Gingerbread method...so using Nash reply run/reinstall your Official ICS...and to root....
see My Links in red in my signature...go the GNote Super page....you should see what is being used to root the Official ICS...I used it and lots others, there prob more methods out there, but I found this is the easiest and more proven method....
Cant miss the info on GNote page regarding Rooting.
so to recap...since your believe you have bricked your phone...
use the method Nash replied to you with...put into download mode....run the official ics, you will need the model, serial number of your phone...
let us know how it works out for you...

And once you're rooted and all fixed up, enter cwm and create a backup. These are great because no matter what you do to your phone as long as you can enter cwm you'll always be able to fix your phone via backup.

I wanted to mention, I'm not sure how you updated thru kies originally (legit update or emergency update) the method you'll be using this time (if you choose to fix thru kies) is the more or less emergency method. I wanted to mention this because when your in download mode and connect your phone to your PC and run kies, kies will try to connect to your device but will time out over time...it took me 2 days of Q and A before I realized kies won't connect with phone in download mode, but that's OK. Once phone is connected click tools/firmware upgrade and initialization, and as bigjoe said youll than need to input model and serial numbers (all caps) than click OK. You'll have a few prompts afterwards but yo basically on your way to a running phone.

Brick = nothing at all happening on phone.
Samsung logo = bad flash (corrupt file used)
Brick can sometimes be revived with a JTAG device.
Samsung logo means re download file, re read instructions and relevent thread, and redo your work.
Don't be too anxious -you will fix it.
I suggest using Kies upgrade > emerency firmware method. Download mode is the key.

Thanks all for the replies.
I was able to go to DEV Section and get the full AT&T ICS Rom. Used ODIN to get it back to factory ICS.
Then (with great care ) re-rooted it using ICS root stuff. I have it all in case anyone else needs this route. Else follow instructions above.
Thanks all. I think for now ICS is where this will stay. In fact Gingerbread was good enough except for not being able to use Chrome.

Can someone link me to a Simple tutorial that can help me root this device? Im new to the Android community so sorry for asking a stupid question! thanks guys!

1st off, the Galaxy Tab definitely doesn't have a virus. Malware perhaps, but not a virus. To make sure you completely rid your tablet of any left over issues, it would be recommended to reinstall the whole OS via the Odin program as that rewrites the /system partition too as the factory data reset only clears out /data. After you reinstall, then do a factory reset again. If the issue persists after that, there might be another problem that is not software related. It would serve you well to understand how to use Odin. It is a great tool that can get you out of MOST trouble you can find yourself in when modifying your devices.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2459734
Just make sure you use the corresponding firmware/software for your model as there are a few different Galaxy Tabs and it matters the size and wifi or data+wifi as well.
As far as the rooting of the S4, well, unfortunately you got pretty much the trickiest one to do. Remember Odin ^^^, this will be another reason to get comfortable with it...

OH!! Thanks for the advice on the Tab. Hmm The s4 is the trickiest one? Is it even worth the time to root then? I mean, I had the tab for a week rooted. And it was very useful. Would the s4 be the same?
And would there be a video tutorial on this? That way im 100% sure im doing it right?

Is it worth it to root it? Only you would be able to answer that. Personally, I couldn't imagine NOT being rooted. I hate not having control over my phone. There are a couple of extra steps here, but nothing some careful reading and well placed questions couldn't get you through. And the chance of you doing something that can't be fixed by Odin, is not impossible, but very unlikely. I've done stuff like this 100s of times and have never bricked one doing these types of things. This thread seems to have broken it down a bit more clearly:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51331630
But read that, and read through some of the comments. Any issue you come across has almost certainly popped up somewhere in those 2 threads with 100s of responses.
Now one thing im not understanding, is the downgrading? And How do ROMS work?
and how would i know what model it is. Example: Mk2,Mk4?
Well, there is currently no method to root 4.4.2 as is, which is why you need to downgrade back to 4.3, since there is a way to root on it, and then it tells you how to update back to 4.4.2 while keeping the root access. Roms (in the phone/tablet world) are basically a package (usually zip format) that contains the operating system. Think of it as a Windows or Linux install disc, in zip format.
Just a quick little beginner's guide to the main terminology you will see:
http://www.androidpit.com/custom-rom-and-root-the-most-important-terms-explained
Okay! Thanks for all of your help! Ill try to root my device. If i have any questions, ill come back here Thanks!
Happy to help, though you might have better luck asking your questions in those threads. I understand how to do this, but haven't had a chance to root one on 4.4.2, so the people who have done it recently probably have it fresh in their mind still.

Don't use T-Mobiles firmware on your MetroPCS phone.
This is what you need to do.
And for the love of all that is good in this world, next time DO A BACKUP before flashing things. You installed TWRP, which gives you the ability to make a complete backup of your system exactly as it is at that point in time. If you had done a back-up before you screwed up your phone, it would have taken you but a few minutes to unscrew it.
I apologize for being harsh, but it seems to me like you really need to read and research a lot more. I always (well, usually...almost bricked my tablet the other day) read everything I can find about something potentially risky before doing it. Let this be a learning experience for you. Read as much as you can, understand what it is you are actually doing rather than just following some guide, and if you don't understand, just ask. I and most of us here would rather you asked a noobish question instead of going blindly ahead and screwing your phone up. Playing around with root and recovery and flashing without understanding it is like thinking you can perform open heart surgery with a meat cleaver because you've seen every episode of ER, Scrubs, and Grey's Anatomy.
thanks

Hm. I didn't think about that. I think you might need to get an SD card. Go on Amazon or eBay and pick one up. An 8GB one can be had for literally a few bucks, but a 64GB class 10 one for $35 is an awesome thing too.

You can always use Samsung Kies 3 to flash your phone back to stock. You need your serial number though, and for some reason it is not printed on the back of the device(at least for me). A call to tech support should get that sorted anyway.
Alternatively, you can do this with Odin to a very similar effect. Search Google for something like "T399NUVUANK3 tar" to get the file you need, my personal backup is corrupt so I can't share.

Ugh... I own a t399n and I'm doing some real development on it. . I've made a stock odex and deodexed rooted zip files for the t399n and haven't posted them yet. . Do you have a solution to his problem? Does he even still have this phone, given that it was a year ago? If you want to fixate on my posts, fixate on the hundreds of times I've been thanked for helping others, especially going above and beyond helping people find the perfect device for them. I'm not here to be grumpy, I'm here to help people, and get help when needed. Why are you here? To pester me? Look, I respect my elders, and you're clearly older, but at the same time don't presume to talk down to me. Try reflecting on yourself and your motive in making a useless post, bumping a thread dead for several months (a severe breach of netiquette), purely to insult another member.
Come to think of it, my email alert wasn't because I was quoted (I have that feature turned off). I got the alert because I'm still subscribed to this thread, having done so in case there were new posts that might enable me to help the OP. I suppose I should unsubscribe, giving the fact that nobody has posted anything of use or substance in 7 months or so.
