Missing Start Menu Icons - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 ROM Development

ok, since this problem is getting seriously troubling, i decided to open up a new thread for it.
i have tried two different wm5 roms, three different wm6 roms, three different sd cards, four different radio roms, two different ipl and two different spl versions. no luck so far. and this is the story in detail:
EVERY program icon in the pull down start menu referring to prgrams installed to the memory card disappears/turns into a white box after EVERY soft reset. if i then switch off phone fuctionality through the commanager, they SUDDENLY re-appear correctly. when i activate the phone again, they STAY THAT WAY! but after the next soft reset, they are all white again.
the funny thing is that it really only concerns icons with reference to the storage card and ONLY the start menu section, NOT(!) the "recent programs" section. there they remain in tact after soft reset.
so it looks as if this is some problem between the radio and the storage card slot (or drivers) during the boot phase.
has anybody encountered this problem, too? is there any solution? i also contacted o2 customer service which told me they would try to reproduce this issue on their machines, and if they could not confirm it, they would deal with it as technical flaw - hopefully meaning that they would replace my device.
so, any suggestions, mates??

The solutions below work fine in my case. You might like to give it a try if it is a real problem for you.
My earlier solution:
1. run clauncher (you can download it practically everywhere)
2. only activate clauncher (edited: tray launcher) and (optional) type in NO path for any application
3. find and run any software such as SKTools enable to set the order of applications in the StartUp folder
4. set clauncher.lnk(edited: tray launcher) as the first in order
5. soft-reset
Or, try the alternative to solve icon-missing problem
My present solution:
simply using quickmenu in lieu of WM menu (again, it's available everywhere)
Good luck!

isn't it a common issue....,a nuisance ^^?? it happens all over wm2003, wm5, wm6....
actually you don't need to do anything except to "re-click" any item of menu on the setting page to get the icons back, if you decide not to rely on the third party applications.
BTW, if you don't really appreciate Quickmenu, an additional exe, you might like to wait for this >>> http://www.dotfred.net/FdcStartMenu.htm. However, my wild guess is this one might have the very same problem since it doesn't change the order of all the services....

Profiles?

So my wive has a cheap mobile phone that has the ability to set a profile, so she can quickly change it to meeting mode, in the car or sleeping mode. Am I to understand that the *MUCH* more expensive XDA has no such thing? That is an outrage...tell me this is not true!!

As a result of loading that software...I just finished a hard reset. After playing with it for 15-mins, it timed out...telling me that my evaluation period had expired! Then, after I removed it....all of my audio settings were possesed. While the system was muted...I was STILL getting sounds.
Not impressed..surely someone can do better
sorry about that I have not tried the prog. If i need sounds completely off then i just turn the volume off, it even silences the vibrator! BTW...check out the today plugins from the same company, they are freeware, work with ppc2003 and much cooler than the defaults.

Do I need anything to run them? I can't believe that cheep-o mobile phones can do profiles....and this thing can't
I've had the same problem with the trail expiring way to soon. Haven't uninstalled yet though....
It did look like a very nice piece of software and I was concidering buying it.

it actually works for me, and I'm using it with WM2003. The author is very eager to hear your thoughts about the program, if you have a problem, email him, go to the website and see if he can help you
I installed the program yesterday. Regarding the profiles, it works fine. But another problem appeared: as you know, in the "Sounds & Notifications" settings of the Pocket PC, in the "volume" tab, you have an option to enable or disable sounds for "screen taps" and "hardware buttons". I usually uncheck these items (to disable the sounds). But since I installed "My|Phone|Profiles", I cannot control these commands: they are always ON, whatever I try to do! Even after uninstalling the software, the problem remains. I think I'll have to make a hard reset. I sent an e-mail to the author (JGUI): no convincing answer yet.

I have the oppostite problem. All the items I check keep getting UN CHECKED.
I had to make a hard reset, forget about the software, and the $10!
There is a new version of the software. Who dares trying it?
It sems that the author is listening carefully to all the critics. Last week, we were in version 1.7, today version 3.0. I dared installing it: so far, it is OK. You can change Profiles easier than Nokia phone, and the problem with the screen taps seems resolved. So far so good.

I actually do have it and so far is been runnning fine, he does listen to all your complains or bug reports, he is checking this very thread. He has even done WM2003 complaint accepts wma now)
I actually bought the app straight away because I have been missing the profiles badly on the XDA.
The only thing is that it's a real bugger to uninstall, the myprofiles.dll is only to be removed with remover.
Furhermore I saw in the news announcements at Thoughts that we should be able to aplly small icons as well, but how to install them?
First, a must: download the latest version (3.0), and read, on the website page, how to install previous versions. Do not use previous versions! When you've installed version 3, activate it on Today screen, then tap & hold on the first (general) icon. A pop-up menu shows you the new possibilities of the software. Pick 'Program Options" and uncheck "Display latger icons ...". See also other options. Have fun.

SMS/Email received, but no notification(s)

Is anyone else having problems with their Qtek 8500, where SMS and/or email messages are received, but with no notification, regardless of selected profile? If you go to "Messaging", the number of messages are correctly displayed adjacent to the appropriate type(s) of message(s).
Classic example for me: the phone is on the table next to me; a little while later, I open the phone to find that I received subsequent SMS and/or email messages but was not alerted to their arrival.
Usually a set of soft reboots in quick succession will restore the alerting.
To make sure this behavior is not related to the various "unsigned" utilities I choose to run, I hard reset the phone back to the original Qtek settings and used the phone for less than a day before the problems started again.
I read somewhere the older STAR100 models (iMate Smartflip, Qtek 8500) had some bug in the deep-sleep mode, and I'm wondering if the bug has not been completely fixed.

Where can I get it? Here in Greece we are still on 3.6.251.0.
Actualy I am using also 3.6.251.0, which I found on expansys (link in the forums). I tried to google 3.6.261.0, but all the results are some russian forums. So I guess that the ROM will be custom, or it'll be a only Russian language (which is not good for me LOL).
Erofich: can you tell us where did you get it, what are the languages in there, and what are the changes? Perhaps could you post also radio versions,...........?
My_Immortal: if you don't want to flash, get app called DontForget - http://magazin.softimage.cz/?page_id=26
Whenever you miss a call/SMS/email/....., after desired amount of time it lets you know that you are missing something (LOL). Well just try it
It is an official 3.6.261.0 russian qtek rom with also english and other european languages and t9:
http://www.myqtek.ru/downloadRom.as....30_QtekRUS_Ship.exe Russia, 26 February 2007
Sounds good, thanks for the link. However I am not able to download it, as it says "Only Brightpoint authorized original products are supported by this site. Contact your place of purchase for ongoing support of your device" (typical, damn).
Do you know what are the changes, or can you post the changes or updates included in this rom?
You can download it from rapidshare
http://rapidshare.com/files/25977944/817887-ruu_star100_3.6.261.0_02.67.30_qtekrus_ship.exe
LOL Thanks a lot, I found a rapidshare link few minutes before you posted the answer.
However, I think that in this ROM are no changes from 251.
See it yourself:
SK_QtekRUS_3.6.261.0_Ship.nbh - size 42*723*985, creation time 19.10.2006, 21:54
SK_QtekEUR_3.6.251.0_Ship.nbh - size 42*723*985, creation time 19.10.2006, 18:21
So I checked the content.. Well there are some differences (995). But I think that there are probably no changes at all. Maybe language files, dunno..
Does anybody know, what are the changes (if there are any) the 3.6.261 ROM?
edit: I checked just 20 lines, and as it seems now, only dates (time) are different in there.. I didn't check more, though.

I have Don't Forget installed. But since there's no notification on the phone,
there's nothing to notify me about, so it doesn't work.
Thanks for the advice though!
Iris
Hm, then try to backup your data (ie with Sprite Backup), hard reset your phone, and instal only few apps a day. Then the problem may be easier to locate..
i had the exact same problem. turns out the culprit IS the program called don't forget. i whipped it out of my startup folder and rebooted, and sent myself a text, and my phone buzzed for the first time in weeks. I had it installed to stop the led from blinking. Guess ill have to find some other solution...
Found Possible Solution!
I had this problem (no SMS notification at all) despite all correct settings.
I had made the following registry tweak, and this was the culprit.
Registry Tweak to Hide "Outlook" in Messaging:
Rename the "ActiveSync" folder.
Example,
Before: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox\Svc\ActiveSync
After: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox\Svc\xActiveSync
I reverted the above change (i.e. renamed the folder back to ActiveSync), and lo and behold, it fixed the problem.

Atom Exec usually freeze

Hi,
My Atom Exec is usually freeze and then some icon has changed to window icon when I try to installed application/copied file that have big size (> 5 Mb). Alert not found will show, if I taped it.
So I always do soft reset to get normal, but application/files are failed to get installed/copied. I've tried to upgrade my ROM into new ROM. I've downloaded from http://www.seeo2.com but I think it no signficantly changed. freeze is usually happened. again and again.
Does anyone can help me to fix my gadget problem?
What should I've done?
Should I upgrade my ROM to WM6 :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=352221 or another way to fix it.
regards.
What software u loaded after flashing the new ROM from O2, name them. Looks to me some third party software is the cause of the problem. Hard reset your phone and then only load O2's software and not any third party software. Observe for a day or two and then load the other software one by one each day and u will get the bugger.

You have just joined the forum and this is your first question. AtomExec has been out for a long time. Do you get a used machine or new one.
Yes, AtomExec does freeze quite a bit but not as much as you describe. In fact all WinCE machine freezes once a while even its big brother WinXP.
Make sure you are not suffer from hardware problem first and read this forum very carefully. It will save you a lot of time and money. Because no one in this forum charge you money and give you guarantee for what you did. If that is the only phone that you have, be extra careful.
First do a hard reset of your machine. Install very few and simple things in it. If it still freezes often then you may have a bad phone unless your Mobile 5 ROM was modified by somebody.
software
thanks for suggestions,
This is my new atome exec. After I flush my ROM, I've installed O2 softwares like O2 wallet, O2 plus, O2 and no 3rd party but sometime window icon still show when I'm try to install application which >2Mb of size.
what should I do to fix it?
Sometimes the installation of large progs take little more time, suggest wait and see how much time it take to install and disappearance of Window Icon. Also check that if u install the program in the built in memor is it faster or not. If that is faster then it means ur memory card is of the slow type.

[Q] Missing program icons

Hi,
I am on orange UK Wm6.5, I have installed few programs on the micro-SD card, however their icons are white in the start menu program list. I tried formatting the card and reinstalling the programs, however after a soft reset the problem is back again.
Has anybody encountered the same issue or is it just my device?
Many thanks
Hi,
My device has the same thing occur, in fact i have seen this on previous WinMo devices ive owned.
There's an app called REstart in this thread that allows you to change the icons of all items in the start menu - this seems to work ok for me
I also recommend grabbing Awesome Start from Here
Also grab the JSPA'sProgram manager from that Thread.
Hope this helps!
Cheers
Paul
Hi All,
I've just found out how to manually change the icon's for all start menu items the tool i linked earlier works but was unable to change the Today icon, this method allows even this to be changed.
Go here in the Registry and each start menu item will be listed, each one should have an icon key that just needs a path to a new .png icon
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Shell\StartInfo\Start\
Enjoy
Here's a link to the info i found :- http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/wi...using-custom-icons-in-windows-mobile-6-5.aspx

Paul
Thanks Paul for your help, I will try that.
It must be a software bug as this never occurred to me before with other WM devices.
Cheers, M
Im not too sure - i do remember similar things happening with my HTC diamond though But these solutions do work! It was something that was really beginning to bug me too.
Glad i could help!

TaskFacade 4 for HD2

Just got an HD2, and after looking for a good task manager found this awesome app TaskFacade 4. Unfortunately the dev appears to have stopped development for it, and the HD2 is just too fast for the app. I was bored, so I decompiled it (it's .net so that's easy) and made some minor fixes.
Anyway, here's what I fixed:
4.02 fixed by aussiebum (thanks aussiebum! ):
1. Fixed names of shortcuts.
2. Changed default destination directory to install on a storage card when selected.
4.02 changelist:
1. Fixed a memory leak that occurred when an app was started and closed outside of Task Facade.
2. Cleaned up Layout config page.
3. Cleaned up config file loading to minimize potential errors due to old and incompatible config files.
4.01 changelist:
1. Increased maximum number of frames for zoom-unzoom animation.
2. Added an optional sleep between frames to smooth out animation and reduce amount of resources used by the app.
3. Fixed a minor race condition which sometimes caused an updated icon to flash through just reactivated app.
Attaching latest version. Works perfectly on my HD2. Check it out.
Attaching screenshots.
YouTube video demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFZHZb5cX9A
_
... Thanks!
Possible to get some screens.
I usually feel that task managers drain the battery a bit. How about this one?
Added screenshots. I just got this phone, so it's hard for me to judge its impact on the battery life. I will do some experiments.
Excellent try!!!
I used to use TaskFacade on my HD, but I always got the problem of gwes.exe growing larger and larger when usin TF, so I had to unistall it.
Can you manage to correct this problem?
Mr. spacepants, why don't you fix even "klaxon" , as the source is free, because gives problems with HD2.. to dismiss/snooze an alarm needs to unlock the phone first
have original taskfacade 4 on my hd2 it works fine except for the reasons you gave for making the new one.
tried it last night and it came up with something like the settings wouldnt load. i sot reset hoping thats all it needed but it still didnt work.
then my phone started having the led blink non stop.
so i uninstalled and put the original back on.
soft reset many times and tried tweaks to get the light off and eventually it stopped.
overall the program didnt work and no idea if led was unrelated

I just tried it today. After about 20 hours of running, with many task switches gwes.exe grew from 4.73 MB to 4.85 MB. And I am not sure if this was because of the TaskFacade - I didn't see any connection between its growth and app usage.
I am pretty sure I didn't fix this. Did you use version 4 when you saw this behavior? I guess it could also be thanks to a fix made in WinMo 6.5.

Crap, sorry for all the trouble. I don't see how the app could have made the LED blink - it has no code that would call that API. Are you sure it's related to TaskFacade?
I am fixing the dependence of the app on the config file. It sounds like the installer didn't work for you for some reason, since it should have replaced everything.
Thanks for giving it a shot.

Now, I'm on WM6.5.5 (23542 build), with sense 2.5.20121225.0.
Let's say that gwes.exe is consuming 38MB before I use TaskFacade.
Right after I run TF, it raises to about 42,7MB and it keeps raising when I use new programs. There is a point above that, I loose HTC menus and standard WM menus are displaying instead.
After a few time gwes.exe stabilizes it size to about 44-45MB.
I don't know if there use some kind os issues when using TF in Touch HD, because it has the same effect with different ROMs I tested.

I think I may have found the problem, but without a way to repro the bug I can't be sure I fixed it. Looks like gwes.exe can in some cases cache images that are in use, and if you do not explicitly dispose of them, the cache keeps growing.
I am not sure why I am not seeing this on my HD2. I have a Kaiser and a Touch Pro 2 lying around here - I will see if I can get a repro with them tomorrow, and test the potential fix.
Weird that your gwes.exe at the beginning is already 38 MB - I haven't seen mine go above 6 MB. It sounds like some other program on your phone may already have a problem.

It depends on which app you use to determine it: sktools separates process and heap (so the measure is lower) while, for example, memmaid keeps it together (and thus the measure is higher).
Anyway, to give an example, with Manila and iPhoneToday my gwes at startup is 13.6 mb with sktools and 42mb with memmaid
btw, i too (blackstone) have problems with TF as jolas: after a short while i lose manila menus AND TF, also if in foreground, is not visible (it's there, since if i blind click somewhere i go to a different task, but i cannot see anything)

Sorry, I was not very clear. When I said that my gwes.exe is 38MB, I mean at a random point (after a few hours of use), not after a soft reset.
As for the gwes.exe and caching images, I believe that you are right...
I hope you to find a solution, to make possible for me to use TF.
Thanks for your effords!!!

Yes, this is exactly the problem I have, too.

Strange, I still can't repro this. Tried it on a couple of Energy ROMs on my Touch Pro 2 (one based on 21898, the other on 23554) - nothing. At best I get a 50k growth in gwes.exe every time a program starts and closes. I am using Task Manager 3.1 for measurements BTW, but memmaid concurs.
OK, if this doesn't repro on my Kaiser I am going to write a quick test program and try running through the normal operations of the app several thousand times to see if that has any effect.
Could you confirm that the steps you are using to get into this state? Are they the following?
1. Start an app.
2. Minimize the app.
3. Open TaskFacade.
4. Switch to the app.
5. Close the app from TaskFacade.
6. Go to step 1.
Thanks again for trying this out, BTW.

I want to thank you for keep searching about the problem I face.
The steps I usually do are:
1. Start an app.
2. Minimize the app.
3. Open TaskFacade (I have assign it to a hardware key via AEButton Plus)
4. Switch to the app.
5. Close the app.
6. Go to step 1.
I am grateful for your work!
If you want, I could try your test versions to resolve the problem I face.
Thank you!
What button are you assigning taskfacade to and what app are you using to do it? I tried aebuttons and it fails to map the volume up and down on the T-Mobile US version of HD2...not sure about other keys.
