[GUIDE] How to root 14.1.B.2.257 using OTA - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Finaly after a lot of trail and error I succeeded to keep root.
All the info in my post is scattered trough this forum, I'm only putting it in one place. All the credits and thanks to the guys who made this possible.

ALSO CHANGE "ro.somc.customerid" SET IT TO 436
ALSO CHANGE "ro.semc.version.cust_revision=" SET IT TO R11A
Reboot your device
Check voodoo if backup is still present
If present, go to software update to install OTA.
When followed this step by step you're on the new firmware with root.
And as usual, everything at your own risk.

Thanks. It's nice with a complete rooting tutorial with links in one place One question though; do we lose everything when we're downgrading to .532?

i don't get it why do i need to change my cda to install OTA when i receive for my own cda country.

Yes,
My documents and photos are on a sdcard, with some back up of apps. When google acount is created all apps are downloaded automatically, so i don't bother loosing...

Off course you can use in this case your own CDA.
(I tried to write it in such a way that somebody with minor knowledge is able to do this faultless.)

Well, it's clearly not necessary to change your CDA if you've already received the OTA.

Alright. I don't care if i lose stuff. I got it all "up in the cloud", so no biggie.

Alright, all i have left is to update to 257 again, but i only have 33% battery left and it's not possible to do it unless i have at least 50%. Just typical Everything else went smooth, and i didn't have any issues
Edit: I'm done updating, and i got root
Edit 2: Hah! I tried using Sony's own backup app before downgrading and everything, feeling that the backup wouldn't be there after the full wipe, but it is indeed there and i have some game saves and stuff there! Awesome!

Germany is using C6833. Is it compatible with C6802?
Noob question: can I flash the C6833 FTF ver 532 on my C6802? I can not find the FTF for 532 Vietnam version, the 510 VN got bootloop and the Generic TW have many Chinese software that I don't like

I don't know, I've C6833. Be adventurous When it's not working correctly you can always flash back. In the generic TW version you can always delete the chinese software, one of the pros of root

Can voodoo keep root after update with Desktop PC Companion?
Because, my phone "Update Center" say "Computer required" to update to 2.257.

Its called OTA root keeper for a reason...

thanks for posting these steps in a simple straighforward way! i did them with no issue whatsoever, and have root on .257. i have a 6802 and used the .532 for 6802 from Hamdogg's thread, and i didn't even have to mess with CDA/build.prop... the OTA was already there, and installed without issue.
one question: do i need the SuperSU from the market, as described in the Vroot thread, or did i not need to download that, since there is already a Superuser installed to /system/app?

You don't need SuperSU, but it's a trusted app that works great. The chinese root app? Not so much.

ahh ok. when i had them both installed, it seemed to default to the Chinese one. i deleted the chinese one from /system/app and it seemed to mess up my root... so i just got done doing it over again, lol.
right now i have just the chinese one but perhaps I'll install SuperSU as well. i did get an error when opening an app called Kinguser, but otherwise root explorer and titanium have worked fine. thanks

SuperSu has a feature to remove previous installations from other superuser apps. This works great, and also fixes the binary.

Quick and easy way of rooting .62 without bootloader unlock

Thankyou to solidsnake81 for pointing this out!!
No need to unlock Bootloader
If you revert to .58 or earlier and root, then update via update centre app in your phone the root remains on the phone whilst you are updated to .62 so the result is a rooted .62 firmware
why not post in the original thread instead of making a new one? no offence but there are 1000's of rooting. 62 threads emerging these days.
thought it would of made it easier for people to see, rather than they going through loads of pages to find it out. ive tried several methods but this seems to be the only one that works .... my appologies

Is this tested to work? I mean, superuser app can remain on the phone but will not actually work for some instances. Please post some confirmation.

It works.I've used this method several times.
Does this mean your root is actually working after updating to .62 via the Update Center App?
Sorry to sound unconvinced. I just see most posts to have unlocked bootloader to root this new firmware.
UPDATE:
Did not work for me. My phone reboots on the 2nd to the last dot indicator and then says could not install the new firmware after it booted up.

Thats because you have modify your system. If you root a fresh installed firmware and make no modifications to it, then root will work after update OTA to .62
Sprinter
Is that so. Will try again.
is flashing the firmware is the only way to go back to .58 or is there any other small process

Okay, so you have tested your tablet and you believe it has root access. Now tell me what exactly are you attempting to do when the AiO tool tells you your tablet needs root access?
Im trying to enable the write permissions to sd, and now when ever i do a selection of any option on the AIO options non of them work and before i did the update to (release1 a) i had access to everything in the menu
super SAD i just used a root checker and i have lost my root access ... please some please tell me there is something i can do to fix this and have access once again.. can i downgrade or work away around this ?
- i had 4.0.3 and flashed to 4.0.3 r1a from the link given in the firmware link given in the AIO thread .....

Unfortunately, you have lost root access and currently there are no methods available for you to regain root access. Your mistake was flashing your tablet using the OTA update file as-is instead of using Condi's AiO tool to pre-root the OTA update file before flashing your tablet.
ah well that really sucks..... and from what i have been reading there is no way of downgrading is there ?

[Q] .257 root

I'm a total Sony noob. I ditched the galaxy note line and my beloved galaxy mega in return for my xperia ultra. Stupidly I let it update to the latest firmware (. 257) now it seems I'm stuck without a root method. I've searched around xda and it seems the only way to root my ultra is to unlock the bootloader wiping my drm keys from the ta partition. So I have the choice between having root or having x reality, Sony apps and a warrantee. Can someone please confirm if this is correct? is or will there be another way?
Android without root may as well be ios and I don't want to have to get out the mega and demote my ultra to 'work phone' status
Thanks, James
This might be correct at the present time. Previously in your situation we were doing this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2502185. However i believe Vroot has been pulled, at least for now, due to potentially beimg malware. Haven't heard any news on that for a while now tho.

Hi James,
Let me give you the 411 on Sony devices.
Firstly Sony devices are almost impossible to brick. The only real way to brick your phone is to try and do an update when the battery is at 10% or something, and the battery goes totally flat.
(then it wont be able to hold charge, so will basically be a SD storage device that cannot retain information)
Unlocking bootloader- This is something you will probably want to do, but at a later date. The only real advantage of this is that modified kernels and ROM's can be flashed. At the moment x-reality isn't lost when you unlock your bootloader. But track ID is lost.
- You can undo this
Root - It's highly unlikely that IMEI numbers were harvested. They were ready, but we don't know anything else.
- You can undo root
Backing up your TA partition - (done after Rooting) This is done so if something goes wrong, then you are able to re-flash your TA partition, and restore your device back to stock, and still be covered under your warranty. Inside this partition, is a store of device information. DRM keys, IMEI, MAC address... etc.
- You can undo this
Recovery - Im sure you know this...
Essentially what every you do you can undo. Sony are really dev friendly. Kind of what Samsung used to be like.

howdid you have root?
one question...if vroot is really a bad thing...can i just use it just to:
1.get root
2. back up TA
3.get recovery
4.install the this

Link doesn't work. Yes, you can get root, back up your TA, get recovery aaand I don't know what that link does, so I don't know. But you can install SuperSU and remove the root app from vRoot. Keep in mind that it's not the vRoot root app that's suspicious but the desktop app.
Still, we have no idea at this point so you can either root and live with it or you can wait it out and see what the investigation brings up.

I used the vroot method. Nothing is confirmed and for me I felt it was worth the risk
Does anyone have a TWRP or CWM recovery image that can be flashed and booted on. 257? Or do you have to flash the CWM kernel, flash any zips you want, then reflash the .257 kernel in order to boot up and run? Is the recovery always tied to the kernel on this device? A lotta questions, i know

so we cn get root and change SU with chainfire from market?
hmmm.maybe we could get root via vroot while internet is down.and after getting root..uninstall said desktop app? hahaha..possible?
i searched for all threads.which of them is the one that we would wait regarding if vroot is safe or not? the thread telling vroot as malware?

Yeah, you can use SuperSU instead. It looks like Kingo has updated their app now and removed the IMEI "collector", so I would rather use Kingo than vRoot.

On the Kingo website the C6833 is not listed as on of the compatible devices, is this an issue?

You can't root .257 yet, so you'll have to downgrade to 532 or earlier first.

even without root..we can still flash the old 532 fw just to gain access to root right?
and then what? maybe use OTA Root Keeper to keep root?

[Q] how can I root this device?

I just got a Tablet Z. Model # SGP311, build 10.4.B.0.577
I am wondering if it's possible to root this. I don't know if the bootloader is unlocked.
Thanks

You can root the XTZ, but it's a bit of work... IMO the easiest way is to install a custom rom, but there are other root methods for this device...

OK I am kind of lost with these numbers (109 etc)..I read the link and it looks like it isnt easy like the Samsung devices.
First do I need to unlock my bootloader? Is it possible to install custom rom without root?

1.) I suggest you simply flash 10.1.C.0.370 firmware and root it using the attached file below.
2.) install the latest dual recovery by NUT.
3.) then follow this:

two important things, you should be rooted and has a recovery installed before proceeding the update and retain the root .
@donedos After connecting the tablet with the companion software on my mac, I got the .109 upgrade
Now I am on .109 Firmware.
- How should I flash 10.1.C.0.370? Which tool to flash, source to find 10.1.C.0.370 (search would do?)?
Many thanks

Okay, I have flashed firmware .370 to my tablet (but used SGP312 instead of 311 which is the model of my tablet!), and I have that awful UI layout with the home key and back button of the bottom left and the drop down menu on bottom right! .109 update has popped up as well.
When/if I update to .109 (after root) will my model be SGP311?
I have rooted okay, but used doomlord xploit as the file you attached did not seem to work, and I have installed the recovery by NUT.
I now have the firmware for SGP311 (UK), but only a .ftf file (853,683kb). The directions above state you should have a zip file also

You might lose root with the OTA. The awful phone layout is a consequence of Google trying to unify the UI across Android devices. It's a bit better for devs, lot worse for users. But you eventually get used to it. With 4.4, even Settings app will have the giant phone UI.

Lenovo Z2 Vibe K920 - OTA row s139_141211

I have rooted my Z2 Vibe using towelroot but I cannot install the newest OTA now. Is there a way around?
I think it's because of the Build.prop file can someone attach the stock build.prop file of the K920?
Thank you
Same issue, root with towelroot and now cannot update OTA

I'm going to try to flash a full rom and then if success with the flashing, i will then try to update OTA
A bit risky but i think thats the only solution i found for now..
Maybe this can give a refreshment since there's no answer yet..

Do you have ROW version? And is there any clue why some device can not be update?
I've even try a Factory Reset before updating, and yet still not succeeded..
I have install some root app like, titanium, and viper4android, maybe some of my root application cause the failure..
As i know that viper4android is adding some features in system during driver instalation..
Can you list your root application that you've installed, so that i can predict which app that might cause my updating failure..
Thanks before for sharing with us..

i have titanium,, greenify, setcpu ,smanager, xposed installer, adaway, supersu, root explorer
Did you try unrooting te device and update?
The problem is with the build.prop file.
The hash of the file is beeing compared while flashing the update. There is a new update S141_150109
Flash the full rom wipes everything.
You can update OTA without problems if the build.prop is untouched which in my case isn't because I changed the locale and did not backup the file.
Please someone upload the original file.
Thank you
Made it!
Ok,
I made it. I found out why the updater won't update. I will upload a TWRP flashable zip.
This is an update from S139 to S141_150109 just flash though TWRP.

How do i install? Thanks!
