[Q] Will the G3 ever have custom ROMs? - Verizon LG G3

Hey, I am about to upgrade and I will likely hold out for the new Motorola phone, but if it is a disappointment then the G3 is a very interesting option.
Curious what to look for as far as custom ROMs are concerned. I am addicted to running custom ROMs however I have had a Nexus phone lately so the whole unlocking/rooting/hackability has never been an issue. I see the the G3 has root, but I presume something else must be done before a custom recovery can be installed...thus no custom ROMs.
I love the G3s hardware, but I will never love OEM software. I want stock Android and I am hoping that will be possible with the Moto X+1 and/or the G3.
Thanks guys and gals

I'm pretty sure once someone can find an exploit to unlock the boot loader, we'll see a custom recovery as well as a few roms shortly after. I don't think there will be stock android until CM adds G3 support

I have faith in the devs that they'll eventually unlock this phone. It's been said in a few places that the security isn't as tough as say in the S4 for example.
That said though... This phones stock experience really isn't bad IMO. Best stock I've ever had. Being rooted and with xposed it's quite tolerable.
I'm a crack flasher though so believe me the itch is there!

Agree totally

If you want a flagship phone that will definitely run custom roms, I believe the htc one m8 is it for now. I agree with the other posters that the G3 will likely get a bootloader unlock at some point, but there are no guarantees. That said, the stock rom has a similar look and feel to the cm 11 rom I was running on my galaxy s3. While not AOSP, it doesn't annoy me the way touchwiz did and I won't have buyer's remorse if the bootloader stays locked.

haha ok i will throw in my desk drawer then and hope it gets unlocked!!!

This thread is pointless! Asking will there ever be custom ROMs? Of course there will be. But what you and many others fail to remember is that these phones are harder and harder to crack each time. Only reason the M8 had root and S-Off so quickly is jcase had a 3yr old vuln that wasnt patched yet. They patched it and then he had to spend more time and money cracking it again and he made a new version, which he charged for since it was such a PITA. Look how long it took the S5 to get it. Just be happy we have root.
If you are so worried about not having an unlocked bootloader, you should get rid of Verizon and get AT&T or Tmo that supports devices that are unlocked right from the manufacture. They will always have Nexus devices and other cool ones Verizon will never see since they dont allow none Verizon devices on their network.

I don't believe it is a "pointless" thread or question. GS5 doesn't have an unlocked bootloader and who knows if they ever will. They have an exploit to run essentially stripped down versions of the stock ROM but that is it. I have not intentions on switching carriers I was simply asking what the status of the G3 was as far as unlocking was concerned.
Thank you to everyone else that responded, I think the G3 is still a viable option for me. I am going to wait to see what Motorola puts out there, but if I don't like it I'll pull the trigger on the G3.

I think it is pointless because you're asking people to predict the future. Nobody can answer the question. Therefore, the question is pointless.

This thread has outlived it's usefulness.
The progress of this device's development can be followed by reading the threads in it's forum.
When progress is made it will be reported in either the general or development sections.
If there are any questions please PM me.

Will The Rezound ever get S-OFF?

Now that an unlocked bootloader is an option, do you think the Rezound will ever get S-OFF?
For most, it seems that foregoing a warranty and unlocking the bootloader through htcdev doesn't present any issues. But many of us simply don't want to get exposed to that risk.
Question came up in this thread:

We already have permanent root. Are you talking about S-OFF?

well as to whether or you will be able to ever root your phone with htc dev unlock....probably not
it didnt seem like there was a huge effort made to s-off the rezound prior to unlock (aside from evil fake dev null's bs)
now that there is a way to flash roms, i doubt anyone is bothering
hopefully this is not the future of htc devices on vzw going forward, as personally ive used og inc and inc2 fully s-off and would probably think twice is my next htc phone was dev unlock only
but this should be in general anyway, not development
Obviously, ROM's are available.
Obviously, you can flash them with an unlocked bootloader.
If you don't unlock the bootloader, you are saying there is a Root method available that will allow you to flash a ROM?

No. Why would you think that was on option? Just unlock the effing bootloader. There will probably never be s-off.

Because that has been the case for every phone I've owned. Did you even take the time to read the original post? Maybe my English wasn't plain enough? Unlocking the bootloader simply isn't an option for some people.

Then don't do it. It's that simple.
This isn't every phone you've ever owned. This is the culmination of every HTC phone released for the last few years. They've learned how to plug nearly all, or enough, of the possible exploits to unlock the bootloader while offering a way to unlock it that doesn't require devs beating their heads against a wall, perhaps fruitlessly for months. The devs aren't going to bother, because why would they? HTC's given us a perfectly reasonable way, and credit to them.
The fact is, we simply don't know what will happen to phones returned under warranty. Plenty of people have returned unlocked phones with no problems.
Thank you for your contribution. This is information I would like to have had before buying this phone. Obviously, it is a gamble to unlock. They make it very clear that it voids your warranty. If there are reports of people getting warranty service in spite of the phone being unlocked, then that is pure luck.
Some of us prefer not to rely on luck.
Never imagined I'd see this type of animosity for a simple question. Especially one as important as this, in relation to this phone.
It appears to me that there's not a large quantity of devs supporting this phone. Hopefully more get the Rezound. I came from the AT&T Captivate and there were tons of devs cooking up ROMS for that one. I had always heard that HTC phones had great dev support on XDA so I didnt really do my homework before buying the phone, it was more of an impulse buy once I saw the large beautiful screen.
All I've done so far is unlock and root my phone. Still running stock and so far I like it a lot. Havent really felt the need to drop a different rom on my phone, or even flash a different kernel. One reason I guess is, the phone works really well as-is, and seems like each kernel or other rom seems to have a good many noted issues.
I hope this improves over time. I loved flashing different roms on my Galaxy S and they were extremely high quality with basically no issues at all. Matter of fact I had been running ICS since back in december and using it as my "daily driver" and it worked extremely well. I believe the only issue was it wouldnt do video recording.

I'm new to HTC phones...but what is S-OFF and what is the difference between that and unlocking the bootloader via HTCdev.com.
I've unlocked my bootloader, just for the sake of doing it. It was simple. What extra benefits would S-OFF give?

Help me out here. I've searched about this topic. I referenced the one other thread where the question was asked. There was very little discussion.
S-Off makes it easier to flash kernels and ROMs. You can flash them together with s-off.
This may be a dumb question, but can a Mod please close/move this thread? It's extremely pointless and definitely in the wrong section.
EDIT: and to the OP, THIS is what tekhna is talking about.

I'd hoped this would improve, over time, as well. I don't get that impression, judging by the reaction in this thread.
What is ROM? is that an internal component of the phone? Like memory? Is there soldering involved to load a ROM?

If the thread is in the wrong section - I can see the need to move it. But closing it would prevent would-be buyers from obtaining valuable information that could be critical to their purchase decision. No reason to hide the truth that the Rezound will probably never get S-OFF.

I think the reaction your getting is because this has been hashed and rehashed alot and putting topics in Development is a big no no . HTC has said they will still honor the warranty related to hardware as long as customizing isn't the cause of the failure..ie overclocking and burning up processor etc.. Verizon is the one that voids the warranty which is understandable after reading the threads of people that do stuff without reading prior to messing with the phone.

Is it just me, or is the development section for this phone a ghost town?

I remember the HTC Evo days. Boy, I spent hours-a-day browsing the development section on XDA to get my flash fix. That carried over with my Samsung Galaxy S2 and then the S3. Now that I'm considering coming back to HTC for a fresher experience, I found myself jaw-dropped at how ghostly the development forums are. I figured this could be a result of the phone being so young; so I went to the GS4 to see if that holds true. Wow... what a difference. Those forums seem busier than hell. And it's only been about a month since it was released as well.
Anyone have any idea why that is? I've been trying to convince myself to get the HTC One. I got over the fact that it lacks a replaceable battery, a MicroSD card, and recently, I got over the fact that the images are just not all that it's hyped up to be. I figured I'd be transitioning to the Moto X Phone when that comes out later in the year, so I might as well put-up with these shortcomings. But not having the development support that I experienced with the earlier HTC devices, and recently with the Samsung devices is just not something I think I can get over.
I am constantly thinking of the word "potential" when referring to this phone. What a shame. HTC had all the tools to flip the market on its feet, but it seems as if they came up short... again.
Check out the non-carrier-specific forum...it's pretty active.
EDIT: HTC didn't come up short, this phone is considered quite a success.
My theory for this specific forum being dead is that T-Mobile's national release of this phone was yesterday (06/05/2013). Before that, it was only available in their "high-volume" locations.
Oh wow. And all of those will work with the Tmo version?
Sent from my badass Samsung Galaxy SIII.
yea all the development is in the international forum. all roms on that forum will work on the tmo htc one and they work very well. i have flashed every sense based rom and most of the aosp roms. definitely not a ghost town over there:good:
Yeah, they should. But as always, continue at your own risk.

As you've noticed by now, there's plenty of developer support for the HTC One. It's all just confined to the general HTC One forums, which makes sense, as the various roms can be used on the AT&T, T-Mobile, and international HTC One's. Most developers don't want to have to maintain 3 or more separate threads for the same thing.
As was pointed out though, if you're looking for T-Mobile wifi calling compatibility, be careful about the ROMs you flash. Since the 4.2.2 OTA for T-Mobile isn't out yet, no 4.2.2 ROM is going to support it. I'd suggest Android Revolution 9.4, or a similar 4.1.2 ROM if WIFI calling is essential to you.
Also, since a Google edition of the phone is going to be coming out in the near future, developer support is likely going to expand even further.
So I think it's safe to say you can put your fears to rest and buy an HTC One. I don't think you'll regret it.
Yea I've been hanging out in the International One forums as almost all their ROMs work for us.
This forum really shouldn't even have a development section since there's not really any specific T-Mo stuff that needs to be done.
Every single ROM in the GSM section will work for T-Mo. There isn't a single one that won't work. The only thing you lose is T-Mo's branded stuff and T-Mo's wifi calling (as they are the only ones who do Wifi calling)/

I was able to dig up an old link for Android Revolution 9.4 but can't find a description or list of features etc for it. Are you positive it has wi-fi calling in it?
I haven't owned an HTC since the OG Nexus One (had all Nexus devices since) so I'm reading up on S-OFF etc before I flash a new ROM. I really want to try out wifi calling though so that's why I'd like to make sure. Thanks in advance!

9.4 definitely has wifi-calling. I'm on 9.3 at the moment and wifi-calling works perfectly for me on T-Mobile. In the installer, just be sure to select T-Mobile as your carrier and it will install all the necessary files for wifi calling.
Also, note that S-Off isn't required to flash this ROM. All you need to do is unlock your device through HTC Dev, located at the HTC Dev site. I'd give you a direct link, but asinine restrictions in place on this forum are preventing that at the moment. Just Google HTC Dev and it will be the first result. You can't miss it.
Anyway, unlike with earlier HTC devices, this unlock method allows you to flash everything you need to update the ROM. Only some of the "black box" partitions like the radio and bootloader aren't flashable when it's unlocked with this method, but to my knowledge, no ROM requires that, and furthermore, the Nexus devices are very similar in that respect.
The only real advantage to S-Off is if you plan on flashing a different carrier's RUU, altering the radio, or changing your CID. Anyway, just something to be aware of.
Good luck.

Sweet, thanks I'll definitely try 9.4 then! Reception in my office all day is terrible so I'm excited to try wi-fi calling.
I think I understand in theory why S-OFF would not be needed. but the nerd in me wants full control with S-OFF.. Also, if I use S-OFF, i can return my phone to bone-stock and keep warranty right? As amazing as the hardware on the HTC One is (I've gotten used to sub-standard hardware with the Nexus line), I'm not 100% sure yet I want to keep it.
Any chance you could educate me on what CID is for? Evidently it may restrict/allow flashing ROMS from certain regions?
Also, I believe I have a basic understanding of what an RUU is, but could you elaborate for me by any chance? I believe it's basically an all i one installer for a full stock ROM?
Sorry if this is a bit off-topic, but this T-Mo sub forum seems a bit more forgiving than some other areas

It's worth doing to S-OFF. If you do, you'll have the ability to relock the phone and put it back to S-ON with zero indication that you ever messed with it. Also, CIDs are used to restrict ROMs from certain carriers to only be installed on certain devices. It's really only a stock or stock-leak ROM limitation, I don't think a single ROM in either the regular or original development section is CID-locked. Either way, if you are S-OFF, you can change your CID code to whatever you want it to be (the code "111111") is referred to as "SuperCID" because that allows you to in theory run an RUU/OTA from ANY Carrier regardless.
You are correct about what an RUU is. However, each RUU is specific to a build of Android made by the carrier, and so far, I think only the Sprint RUU is out. No one has a T-Mo RUU yet (but you really don't need one, all you have to do is flash the stock rooted ROM from our section here and then unroot from the SU app options).
Enjoy tinkering.

You're going to enjoy the One. It's the first Android phone to have the build quality of an iPhone with specs that beat the pants off it
The only thing that sucks about the One is that because it has such a high pixel density, you will be extremely sensitive and aware of pixels in all your other displays (laptop/desktop/tablet etc).
I own an ASUS Zenbook, which is a 13" ultrabook with a full 1920x1080p display which is retina-levels of dense on such a small screen (I think it's almost 170 pixels per inch). The One? The one is a whopping ~470 pixels per inch. It is stupidly dense and I promise you won't find a single pixel no matter how hard you look.

PS - link to ROM if anyone wants it: http://www.androidrevolution.nl/downloader/download.php?file=Android_Revolution_HD-One_9.4.zip

Look like they took it down. I have it in my local computer here and I can upload it for you somewhere if you like. PM me if you have access to somewhere I can put it for you.

Developers Unite?! SafeStrap and the Galaxy S4

I rooted my Verizon S4, froze all of the bloatware with ROM Toolbox Pro, and now it's fast as hell. The battery lasts 2 days with moderate use, FoxFi hotspot works, and I don't get any security warnings (froze your ass KNOX). I've installed SafeStrap 3.71, and I've tried installing HypderDrive, but it hasn't been able to stick. The bootloader is totally locked down, so Hashcode's SafeStrap seems to be the only thing keeping any hope alive for something that will work.
I guess the real frustrating thing is that there is no real unity between developers here, and that no one can decide on a route to go with. This leaves a lot of us who just got the S4 with fewer, or no ROM options. Is it time we accepted that a bootloader solution might not be the way to go, and attack it using something like SafeStrap? I've been using SafeStrap on my Droid 4 for a long time, and it is the best alternative, and in many ways, superior to unlocking a bootloader. Sure you get issues regarding space for more than one ROM install, but having your stock ROM intact is an excellent fail safe. There are some other constrictions, but the manpower potential could really bring results to a dual-boot system like SafeStrap.
My deal here is, let's get behind HashCode on this, and maybe he can share his work with the rest of the developer community, and we can all contribute some funds to make something like SafeStrap work, which it most definitely can. Imagine if we could get Cyanogenmod developers working on SafeStrap with HashCode to come up with ROMs that would actually work like they do with an unlocked bootloader. There is a somewhat steep learning curve with SafeStrap, but with resources comes better documentation. People are too quick to jump on a 1-click rooting method, and leave the rest of us behind. If SafeStrap got enough attention, maybe it could someday be a one-click solution that no one at Samsung, Motorola, or HTC could ever lock down.
Let me know what you think.

I Love Hashcode and that he designed SafeStrap as i have used it on my Droid Bionic prior to getting the S4 (im still on MDK). But I would never say it's superior to unlocking a bootloader in any sense. I can say maybe convenient for quicker swapping of roms but I can't see SS being better then an unlocked Bootloader.
But the rest of you post im totally on board with. Id rather an unlocked Bootloader and be able to get OTA's with the correct kernels then a port where some things won't work since were still on the original or a previous kernel.

HD 12 is about as flawless as one would expect for a custom rom. Im happy with it and honestly if there were more options, I doubt I would move away from it. Thats just my opinion though. What do you mean it didnt stick?

The development community on the S4 took a pretty big hit with the whole boot loader thing. Hopefully hash can figure out Kexec and hopefully we can get more dev support...
But until then safestrap IS here, it does have roms and it works great. Not sure exactly what your looking for?
Can you detail what your doing to advance the community, and how you want us to help you?

what makes you think there is no unity or communication between devs on this issue? The fact of the matter is, the security lockdown is pretty steep and in the end, no work around can be possible.

That's my point about the bootloader, that in time, every carrier is going to put their phones on lockdown. It just makes sense to move to a newer concept than trying to unlock the bootloader. Is hijacking the boot order, what SafeStrap does, the right way to go? What about overwriting the kernel and bypassing the bootloader altogether? I remember Hashcode was working with kexec, and for those of you who were there a couple of years ago when SafeStrap was first there for the Motorla RZR, D4, and Bionic, might remember this. It executes a live kernel overwrite, before the bootloader can even come up to verify the signed stock rom/firmware/bootloader.
I've read a couple of people mentioning this, but I'm not sure if its feasible. My point, SafeStrap and KEXEC are two options that need some blockbuster support. Hashcode is the Zeus of Mt. SafeStrape, but where is the God of War and the rest of the bunch to kick ass? Can we pick a direction?
Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way, maybe my message isn't the one that needs to be heard? I haven't posted much over the last couple of years, but I've done a lot of reading over the last few weeks, and I'm just curious if there is a Bat Signal they can use to summon the Justice League and put their collective boots up the ass of Lex Luthor (Verizon and co.)?

Put it this way:
I'm with you 100%... WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO?
Because right now, your basically saying "DEVELOP MORE STUFF FOR ME SO I DON'T HAVE TO, LOLZ".
You just saying we should do things better is not a plan, what are you actually doing here to move this thing forwards?
BTW:

Its not just like "BOOM! Here is Kexec!"
Its not like the people you are suggesting should put together a software package for you phone for free are not working on it... Its just hard.

Dude. There are people working on this, believe me. And people who arent developers or cant contribute directly have posted a bounty to reward whoever can get a workaround. Safestrap does work, regardless of whether you are able to get it to work on your device. I'm guessing its user error. Not really sure what more you expect the community or Hashcode or any other dev to do that they arent already doing...

[Q] What phone to get after the Rezound?

I'll probably be replacing the Rezound this year and, since I'm not "in the know" on a lot of phones out there maybe you can help me pick a good replacement. I'm on Verizon and plan to root the phone and install custom ROMs. I like the HTC One and HTC One Max (mostly for the removable SD). The Samsung Galaxy 4 looks alright, but I'd definitely have to wipe that thing...can't stand the Samsung interface and crapware.
Anyway, please tell me what phone(s) you would upgrade to from the Rezound and why. Thanks.

Right now the only phone I would go with is the LG G2. Decent size, amazing battery life, minimal skin... It is my #1 choice right now.

Hmmm...hadn't considered that one. Just compared it to HTC One and Galaxy S4 at VZW and I'd say I'll have to seriously consider the G2. Thanks! Any idea if there is a lot of ROM development for it? I'm on Tachyon on the Rezound and love it. Anything like that for the G2?

Yeah, lots of ROMs, LOTS, and many devs have moved to it (I see @Snuzzo just mentioned he is getting the G2 very soon for one). I am up for new work phone Monday, pretty sure I'm getting the G2 next week as well.

Just a question. With the lg g2. I've had my eye on it. I see with Verizon you get that crappy locked bootloader like every single other device on Verizon.... -,,,- but with that locked boot loader I've seen people say easy to unlock, not easy to unlock. Simple to add twrp. Pain in the butt to add it. I've read a lot on it. But cant seem to figure out :$ I see there's the Loki flash tool which is supposed to supposedly help "bypass" or help unlock the phones boot loader? Still very confused on that. As I said I've looked j to the g2 whenever I upgrade.... Although going to keep the Rezound and just flash stuff like crazy on it but with the rooting usually don't root my phones till latter (my means of root means going all the way with everything.....) I mean yeah just adding su is all fine and dandy. But I usually don't root and add twrp and a custom ROM till a year- year and a half or completely getting tired of it. Because after getting a phone because I have terrible luck with electronics sometimes..... I end up screwing up and having to get either a new one. Or get it fixed. Almost all the time. Soooo...... Any ideas on that? Sorry for the long drawn out question..... :$ and kinda being off topic :$
Sent from my Rezound using xda-developers app. CyanogenMod 11. S-off
Loki is a patch exploit to flash a custom kernel and recovery. The G2 can be downgraded firmware/rom-wise, so even if VZW patches it there will always be a way to root/flash.
Thanks for explaining that. I was a little confused. Makes sense of all of what I've read now. Thanks @Snuzzo

Another Frustrating Phone?

Hey all. So I'm picking up a brand new G4 in the morning. I've not owned a G4, and have been on the Galaxy 6 for about a year and a half. Buying that phone was the biggest mistake I've made, it got me so out of touch with the Android world because there never was a decent root method that I was able to obtain in my opinion. I see a ton of different threads on here about Tools, Themes, Apps, etc and of course ROMs for the G4. I won't have the G4 long, only until my contract is up in October, then I'm cutting ties with Big Red and going global. However, until then, I am hoping that maybe I can get root on this phone and unlock some of its potential. I have looked around a few times now, but really the only thing I can find is the KDZ images, is that correct? Is this simply because we can't unlock the bootloader? Or maybe there is something I'm completely overlooking? If I'm missing something, or if there's any info you can give me on what I'm in store for, please let me know. I really miss my custom Android devices so much, I'm just not a person that has the financial means to go out and get a new phone every time these talented developers can't find a good root.
Thanks for any responses, I've missed you XDA.
Trust me though, I'm saving up already and going to grab a Huawei more than likely when I finally divorce from this 15 year partner that to me is now, Big Dead.
