Subject: After flash, where did COM1 go?

Hello,
I have a weird issue that came up on my T-Mobile PPCPE after I
flashed from 3.02 to 3.14. I can no longer open COM1, in
anything!
I can't open COM1 in Pocket Streets (it doesn't even show up in
the COM port list).
If I load a terminal emulation program, it sees COM1, but when
trying to open the port, it fails.
There is no equivalent replacement port for it. Other COM ports
are COM2, COM3, COM8, COM9, but all of these have different
documented purposes and aren't my GPS com port.
Anyone have any ideas?

Just to make sure my own software didn't cause problems, I
backed up my RAM to SD and hard-reset my phone. COM1 still
didn't come back... however...
I was able to answer my own question by finding the following
answer in a newsgroup:
------------
You have to change a registry value:
HKLM\Comm\Irsir1\Parms
change the value "Port" from 1 to 9 and then reset your device.
Now you can use your GPS on com1 without compromising others
phone functions.
-------------
After having done this, COM1 is back, now COM9 is gone. I will
say this solved my problem, though if anyone tries this and
finds unexpected problems resulting from COM9 being gone (and
comes up with a better idea of which number instead of 9 would
be more appropriate), definitely say something!
ADMIN please post this fix somewhere as surely others will have
the same issue!

I have (almost) the same problem. When I start TomTom Navigator
I get the fault: Cannot open COM1: Port does not exist. When I
alter the value from 1 to 9 all goes well with TTN. However I
then will be not able to make a GPRS connection (when the value
is 1 then I can).
Please help.
TIA,

I had exactly the same problem with TomTom routeplanner but if
you turn off the Infra Red Receiving option under
Start/settings/connections/beam I think you will find that com1
then becomes available. I also turned of the 'Enable
synchronisation when cradled using:' in the Active Sync options
as I had a feeling that the XDA detected the seial connection
and was trying to sync. with my GPS. I alson found that if you
disconnect the cable when navigating that it locks the XDA up
which then has to be reset.

it had me foxed for ages, thanks for the help peeps!!!

How can I change the registery as described here?
Thanks for helping

I've started AtDbg (from \Windows directory) - and I've noticed
some interresting stuff...
there is a message being received every few seconds or even more
frequent - it's saying
<Rx:4D8280025CAD> or something like this - does anyone knows
what's that about?
I'm now posting this from work, but when I post from home (half
mile from here) it's actually 0024 instead of 0025 - have to
test it with other areas though...
Is there anyway to use GSM as low-resolution "GPS"? just by
detecting in which cell you are.

it seems something about the battery/power status...
Subject: I don't think it's the battery
From: [email protected]

the AtDbg shows the log from the communication between GSM (the
radio) and some of the near cell-towers (excuse my noobie
terminology )
here is last things I'm getting
<Rx:4D0180025626> or let's put it this way
<Rx:4D018002 56 26>, also I'm getting
<Rx:4D018002 57 27>
<Rx:4D018002 63 33>
those seems like coordinates, and I was moving from EAST <->
WEST - I've tried it only along half mile. (I live in Santa
Monica, CA - and I was testing this trhough Ocean Park Blvd.)
Can someone else post his numbers, the easiest way to get only
numbers except anything else - is to start AtDbg, wait a little
till the log fills, and then turn off the phone - It'll be
getting only those <Rx:xxxxxxxxxxxxx> stuff..
Still, I may be wrong - it can be the battery only

without power connect : <RX:4D01......>
under charging : <RX:4D02......> or <RX:4D04......>
charging full : <RX:4D08......>

yep - it's something with the battery! not coordinates or
something like this...

This utility as far as i am aware logs the various AT commands
and signal strength between the local cell and the XDA. For
example, check the logs after attempting a GPRS connection - it
will list the standard at+cgdcont=1,"IP", "APN" command to the
network as part of the communication to establish the GPRS
connection.

Can anybody tell where you can get this program from ?
Thanks

check your windows directory
gps
get your xda to show you the releative strenght of 3 cells and you have gps
Sorry but in my installation there is not program under windows
atdbg gone
I think it was only present in the earlier releases.
I believe you could copy it out of an early ROM onto a newer one.
atdbg == rilcomtemp.exe
Hi,
In my 3.15.15 I found that the atdbg program was changed to rilcomtemp.exe in the windows directory. You have to tell explorer to show all files to see it.

Would anyone know if there is a Nokia type of engineering
software which could be installed onto the XDA.
The Nokia software displays LAC CIDs time slots, power level
etc.

Finding any and all network parameters in the RAM of the phone
is most definitely on the XDA-developers roadmap. Forget the
Nokia monitor mode. We'd like to go even further, and turn this
platform into a versatile client-side GSM protocol analyser.
Stay tuned. (But don't hold your breath...)

Bonding XDA II and Navman 4410

Hi,
Have just got my Navman and was hoping it would be a simple solution to connect to my XDA, but not so.
I've down loaded the BTHTools1012.exe and run it from my desktop, also have loaded EnableCharPin.exe onto my PocketPC.
When I do a bond bluetooth, it finds the Navman. When the passkey dialog box comes up I run EnableCharPin.exe but nothing seems to happen, so enter "NAVMAN" into orginal dialo box.
With the next step linking the COM port I only get Comm 7 as being avavible and when I run the Bluetooth settings from Inbound port is COMM4 but uncheck and Outbound is COMM5 checked. When start is pressed it says that need to bond.
Could some please help
XDA info is:
ROM: 1.60.00WWE the latest for Australia
ROM date: 12/3/03
Radio: 1.08.00
Protocol: 1337.18
ExtROM: 1.60.44
I also loaded SmartST V2 and it ran first time fast. Now it seams at the point of the PPC hanging. I,ve got the maps on a SD card (512M with about 235M free) and 24M for storage and 33M for programs on the XDA. I loaded 3 state maps totalling about 52M on the SD.
Thanks Gordon
Did you unbond and delete your navman before you installed the bluetooth tools?
I had Bt tools installed before I attempted to bod.
I have now also deleted BT Tools altogther but still cannot bond.
I must admit that just after my first post here I did notice that my XDA was not set to recieve "incoming beams". Activating this did not do a thing even with resets.
Thanks for your thoughts and have you got any other suggestions apart from me ring Navman on Monday (I'm in Sydney OZ).
Thanks Gordon
Its a tricky process, but mine is finally working with an XDA II, no blutooth tools and on COM 5. You definately need to DESELECT 'Receive all incoming beams" as if you are set to receive incoming beams, then it seems to interfer with the GPS set up and COM ports
Try selecting COM 5 as the port on the Navman and amke sure that "incoming beams are OFF" on the XDA.
I suggest you start over, uncheck the beams box, install bthtools, install enablecharpin, discover and bond the navman, let us know what happens.
Hi,
Well I did something along the lines of "start over, uncheck the beams box, install bthtools, install enablecharpin, discover and bond the navman" etc but not neccessarily in that order and finally got the thing to work.
Thanks for everyones comments. If I had not tried so many permitation, then I could heve been able to tell all what I actually did!
Now that the SmartST is working, my next task is to use topographic maps wth one of teh follwoing I'm about to try, GarmapCE, GPSDash, PSeasyCE etc. Any suggestions?
Gordon
Glad you got it working in the end. I really like the Navman Smart ST 2 software and their tech support is very good to.
You might check out "MapTech" for topo maps and nautical charts. You can purchace CD's or a subscription that lets you download unlimited maps and charts. If you play golf, and you want to use your GPS to help you pick a club or find out the distance to that bunker in front of the green, "Star Caddy" is fun too!!
Be sure to do a backup now its configured correctly, it may save some hair pulling later if you ever have to hard reset.

SE 2003 TOM TOM Com port 1 not there?

I'm just recently using tom tom for first time and TOM TOM tells me everytime that COM1 doesn't exist.
I'm able to downgrade back to plain old 2003 to try it , however I'd rather have a fix or work around before I do so....
any thoughts or experiences?
Hi,
This will happen if the GPS cable is not connected correctly. Disconnect the cable and reconnect then start TomTom. I get this now and then. Everytime i reconnect it works just fine. Also check within TomTom if it is configured to use COM1 via serial and not Bluetooth.
Cheers
Jay
Right, just been down to the car, everythings plugged in correctly, tried multiple soft resets but keep getting the message "cannot open COM1: Port Does not Exist"
I tried using the serial on USB option instead (just clutching at straws) and get no error messages, just GPS Position unreliable. As far as I can see TOM TOM knows something is being plugged in as the flashing disconnct icon dissapears when i plug in the GPS reciever.
Any further ideas? I want to try it having downgraded back to 2003 but I don't have any backup software apart from xBackup and I'm reall yfond of SE.
Solution to Com 1 problem
Hi,
Go to connections, and disable the IR search for other devices, and IR in total, then the COM 1 is released.
Took me quite some time to figure that out my selv when having the problem.
Cheers.
Esor
Missing COM1 Port
This happened to me too and I discovered that it was being caused by the IR Beam being on receive by default. This inhibits the use of COM1. Solution - Navigate through the System functions to find the IR Beam option. Disable that and this may solve your problem.
Cheers Hissing Syd, I was just about to try flashing my rom but this fixed the com1 issue, next to try it in the car..

Qtek 8500 does not get recognized

Hello,
a friend of mine got his new Qtek 8500. He first installed the latest ActiveSync 4.2, then connected the Qtek with the provided cable to his notebook. Charging started, as expected.
However, nothing else happens. Device Manager can't find anything new, of course ActiveSync does not find the phone.
Tried already different USB ports, still the same. Charging yes, ActiveSync no.
Am I missing something? Like enabling USB on the phone?
8500 - not recognized
I had the same issue and was able to correct it by downloading and installng ActiveSync 4.5 Beta - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/activesync/default.mspx
Hope that works for you also

Make sure all your firewall are off as well...
Try to turn off Spyware and Antivirus programs. It helped for me
A problem - activesync and qtek 8500
Yesterday I got my qtek. I immediately wanted to synch all my contacts, it didn't work however. The phone established only a guest relationship. Reinstall didn't help at all, neiter did a hard reset.
After about 4 hours of looking for a solution I finally found it. Its not mine but taken from
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/t-shootactivesync.htm
- really wonderful guide to active sync problems.
The solution: (a quote)
"Check and see of the registration key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows CE Services and see whether a key named GuestOnly has a value of 1. If it does then change the value to 0 to allow you to setup a partnership."
after that - just one mean digit, it simply worked.
hope it helps anybody in any way
