XDA switching itself on from time to time - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

I have a German XDA and applied the recent ROM update (with the new homezone display feature). Now, I have noticed that the XDA switches itself on (display appears) from time to time. It's kind of annoying because if I switch off a device I want it to stay switched off (unless I set an alarm or something). Maybe it has something to do with the homezone display feature.
Did anyone noticed the same behavior?

switching on by itself
Yes, mine has done this in the past. Last time it was about midnight on Friday night. No idea why. I wasn't expecting an alarm to ring, no messages, etc. And I haven't flashed or anything, mine is an original UK spec xda, rom 3.12
The reason I mentioned the time was I was thinking it was some sort of bling from the network (GSM was on even though xda was off). But if you're in Germany, then that's unlikely!
rgds,
Alex.

Everytime when changing the BTS the XDA wil turn itself on. Its a problem that started with the latest Update of O2 Germany (probably UK too) and has something to do with the HomeZone-Status displayed on top of the display.
I heard about solving the problem by swithing off the HZ-Status.
Greetings, Kaputter

Excuse my ignorance, what's BTS?
rgds,
Alex.

Yes, I already suspected the homezone indicator. I will try out to disable it.
Btw:
BTS = Base Transceiver Station
Your mobile connects to the BTS by radio. If you move, you have to change the BTS because they cover only a limited area (cell).

BTS and stuff
I think what needs explanation here is that, if I'm not mistaken, in Germany, O2 is offering a very low rate for calls made from one particular Base Station. This way, they'd like to get people to use their GSM's when they're at home.
I think, but I'm speculating here, they cell-broadcast the CellID on some cell-broadcast channel to allow people to see if they're home, or they did some client side kludge. Possibly using SIM toolkit on phones that support this (the XDA does not yet support SIM toolkit features).

Homezone
You are right. The homezone check is the problem. I´ve read sth about that. You have to delete a file, but I have forgotten the name. However, it disables the homezone. Try to find it.

Also, keep in mind that _ALL_ PocketPC devices (not just PPCPE) will turn themselves on each night at midnight to do housekeeping -- they roll-over tasks and such at that time.

Anyone found this HZ file to delete yet...
My XDA - now 3.14.13ENG upgraded from 3.02.00ENG - is still ocasionally switching itself on in this manner.
Cheers - Rich

Known CE thing
All PPC's turn on at midnight to reset the today page, update databases, etc... It should only be on for a very short time though.

It's the homezone. If you have O2, then look for the file"hz.exe. It can disable the homezone-Checking

New vodafone uk firmware for the v1605??

Ken Barwick is reporting new offical firmware release for the Vodafone UK V1605. His blog is here:
http://blogs.conchango.com/kenibarw...s_2F00_-TyTn_2900_-get_2700_s-an-upgrade.aspx
And the software is on rapidshare:
http://rapidshare.com/files/38302476/RUU_Hermes_VF_UK_2.07.161.1_6275_1.32.00.00_108_Ship.exe.html
Can any of you more techinical minded folk check it out - is it an offical upgrade? (can't find anything on the offical Vodafone websites). Too nervous to try it myself as my phone is a company phone. Anyway if someone wants to look into it and report back.
Cheers
Barney
Well I have gone ahead and done it - got too impatient to wait for someone else to check it out.
The upgrade went smoothly -
Stats as follows
After
ROM Version 2.07.161.1
ROM Date 02/06/07
Radio Version 1.32.00.00
Protocal Version 32.65.7020.09W
AKU 3.3
Now will rebuild with software I had before and test. Will keep you informed but all seems to be working ok so far.
Cheers
Barney
It's the same rom that came (installed) on my 1605. It's very good. Battery life is very good. BT on, wifi with a fair amount of use, backlight up full, 30-60 minutes of calls etc... and the battery lasts around 48 hours. Beats my T750v by around 36 hours.
Hello,
I own a sim free TYTN and use a Vodafone sim. If I update my TYTN with this ROM, will I then be able to install the iminent HTC ROM update without any problems? Will the Vodafone ROM lock my phone to their network?
Thanks.

Sounds like it is an official ROM then - can someone let an admin know to possibly update the relevent WIKI page. Wonder why Voda are using it for newer phones but haven't issued it as an update for exisiting phones?
Must say - no problems so far - all software seems to be working ok.

Since upgrading I had a problem with accessing my storage card. Appears this is a known problem with newer ROM upgrades (doesn't happen with AKU 2.x version) Have applied a reg workaround posted in other threads. If that works great if not I will go back to my previous ROM (AKU 2)
Cheers
Barney
Well the issue with my storage card is still happening therefore I suspect I will revert to my previous Vodafone firmware AKU 2.3 - Anyone know whether reverting will be a problem as I read somewhere that the bootloader or something like that will not allow you to revert to a previous rom. Anyone know if this is an issue?
Cheers
Barney
Loaded this on my v1605. (Well, actually I extracted the ROM, Ext ROM and Radio so as to continue running with Hard-SPL.)
Anyway, works fine for me. But the protocol version is actually 32.65.7020.09H (i.e. with HSDPA). I think the previous Vodafone radio had a protocol ending in W.
Also I had some problems with my storage card but I found that putting into a card reader and re-formatting as FAT32 on a Windows computer did the trick. The card was originally FAT16. (Curiously a FAT32 format on my Mac failed to fix it...)
Initial impressionis AKU 3.3 is fantastic and I'll be sticking with this ROM. New radio also seems to give me much better reception and call connection reliability, so far. I might try radio 1.38 in due course once I have a better idea of how this one is performing.

Thats weird because I just checked and mine definately has a "W" at the end not an "H". Wonder how that can be?
As for reformatting it as FAT32 - how long has that been workign for now. Seems some of these fixes like the reg fix or the FAT 32 fix work for some people and not for others

Okay, I found my first problem with this firmware: Vodafone Mail (242) voicemail icon alerts no longer work. The SMS alert doesn't seem to come through either. So no audio/vibrate alert either. D'oh!
On the other hand there is a new "VMail" Today screen plugin which does show you how many voicemails you have waiting. I guess the software is automatically processing the SMS alerts rather than treating them as normal voicemail messages. Which is an improvement (I always resented having to delete the old SMS notifications) but I'd still like to have the option of having an audio/vibrate alert for new voicemails (useful when you have call waiting disabled) as well as the spool icon which saves on Today screen space.
The protocol version thing is wierd. I definitely have HSDPA now - an "H" logo appears in place of the 3G one when I use data. Are there perhpas two variants of this ROM image circulating? I got mine from the Rapidshare link above.
Hey guys...
Sorry I was late on responding to this...
I can say that this ROM IS the official one, Vodafone are still trying to work a way on advertising and delivering you the ROM's...
On the case of the H and 3G logo's on the top bar. This is to indicate that you have HSDPA enabled coverage or 3G coverage.
I personal haven't updated to this version due to a number of reasons, so you'll have to let me know if you can make calls when the H is shown, in the States I could with the old ROM but not over here...
As for the Voice Mail, if that is the case removing them after delivery is a school boy error!!! tsk, tsk!!!

Did you allow the Ext ROM to run? I believe that VF use a cab in there to turn on the voice mail notifications (part of the service indiciation security policy)

Yes, I installed the new VF Ext ROM and allowed it to run. I might take a look at it's contents to see if I can manually run it again. (Not keen on doing a hard reset as it took me a couple of hours to reconfigure all my apps and seetings after the ROM update.)

You're right! I can't make calls when the H is shown! After several attemps H is replaced by 3G and call goes through.
Incidentally it only seems to go into HSDPA mode as and when I initiate a data connection. During the course of the connection it will often switch back to 3G and, without fail, does so after the connection is dropped (manually). Is this normal behaviour?
Previously (with the factory-provided Vodafone ROM) I didn't get an 'H', and my ROM version ended in W, implying no HSDPA. Nevertheless I did have SetHSDPA enabled using the fit4cat HTweakC and there were often times (in 3G coverage) when I couldn't make calls until after several attempts.
I definitely have the W version. Got it from rapidshare, no idea why it is different to yours. No problems with making calls. I used set hsdp to on but the icon still says 3g however downloads at 1.2mb so definitely switched on. No problems at all with voice mail icon, works completely as normal. Only issue is still with the storage card. Drives me bananas.
Cheers

I rang Vodafone about the voicemail problem. They've said they'll send me a replacement handset on Monday! Will be interesting to see what the firmware version on that one is.
Okay, this is really wierd. I tried doing a hard-reset and now the voicemail problem is gone! Plus I checked the Device Information and the Radio ROM version has changed to the 'W' version. As with Barneyabz there is no 'H' icon to indicate HSDPA but now calls can actually be made when HSDPA is enabled.
Why should the hard reset have made any difference?
And the VMail today screen plugin no longer works now that the spool icon and text alerts are working again. I really don't understand.
Okay I've done some more investigating... I flashed another Radio ROM (1.43, Protocol 'H') and found I had the same voicemail and HSDPA calls problem. I then did a hard reset and found it was fixed with the protocol (and behaviour) had changed to 'W'.
I can only assume that there is some customisation in the extended that changes this. Yet I ha dprevious tried manually running the auto-customisations from extended rom without any joy.
I might do some further digging. (Probably not just yet, however!)

This is driving me CRAZY. can SOMEONE help

Hey all
Back when i was using Black Majik, when I was connected to a UMTS network, the wireless Home plugin would show 'UMTS T-Mobile'
however, now, with the Schaps 3.60a rom, it only shows T-mobile, and with TNT it only shows TMobile
Is there any way possible to get it to show UMTS?
with thanks
also, which radio rom do you all reccommend for T-Mobile UK?
Im assuming you are in a 3G zone? Is 3G disabled via the comm manager or via the registry?
i know exactly what you mean! This is what i think is causing a problem with the network name not being sent to my Parrot 3200LS car kit.
Would be very glad of an answer to this.
I too noticed this problem and just assumed that it was a display setting as i've still seen the carrier signal thing in the top bar turn to the U for UMTS.
There are a couple of settings in your registry that control this.
Take a look at:
HKLM/SOFTWARE/OEM/PhoneSetting
There are two values here that are of interest.
The first one is Enable3GLongName. This should be turned on (set to 1).
The second value is for LongNamePrefix
This can basically be anything you want. UMTS is a bit of a favourite, but you could call it whatever you like (Next G in Australia for instance - it would display 'Next G Telstra').
Jasjamming's ROMs have these settings set by default whereas Schap's do not - thus the reason for the change to your operator display.
if that works mate you are an absolute hero!!! Just trying it now.
You are indeed a complete and total Hero! This worked for me, although Enable3GLongName was already enabled, changing the prefix from 3G to UMTS was the part that worked for me!
Now my parrot says UMTS T-Mobile again!! I really cant thank you enough mate!!
Cheers mate - glad I could help

can this be lobbed into the wiki?! i'm not sure how to edit it, but if someone else is then great, otherwise i'll try and figure it out over the weekend!

Freeze on Standby ("Standby of Death") w/ WM6.1 ROMs?

Hi everyone,
I've been running a WM6.5 ROM lately, and the stability was great - less crashes, hardly any problems with the device just turning off... but it was extremely slow because most of the RAM was used just for running the system.
So I went back to a WM6.1 ROM, and I noticed that the device was freezing in standby mode when left alone for a while - the screen won't turn on any more... apparently the CPU locks to 100% when the freezes happen, because after a restart the battery is drained to 50% (from 100%!) and the device is very hot. This used to happen on other WM6.1 ROMs as well...
Any idea why this is happening? Why only on WM6.1 ROMs? Is my device just ****ed up? Or am I doing something wrong?
same with me.. ..but i think that my device haw this freezing on sms receiving, sometimes it vibrate without stop. ..
Do you use BatteryStatus by any chance? I've just uninstalled it on a whim and so far no crashes. Won't be able to tell for sure until in a few days though...
I had the Standby of Death SOD this is when the phone fails to come out of standby with a power button press. This issue only affects some people on some networks. I'm not sure if its a network problem or a software problem but as only a minority of people have it, I suspect its mainly a network problem there is a software solution.
The solution is to change the phone settings band option from auto 3G/2G to either 3G Only (WCDMA + UTMS 2100 in Europe) or 2G Only (GSM + AUTO) depending on your requirements.
Also read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=540943&highlight=standby&page=2 where the resolution was to get a new SIM.
Obviously this only solves the problem when the crash is because of the sim and/or settings which impact the sim. To rule out a software cause its best to start with a hard reset.

Did you try suggestion in post #4 ?
Just might be the answer your looking for
So how would I have gone about selecting something that my phone doesn't support in the first place?
As far as I can tell, there is no possible way I could have set my Prophet to use 3G
Oh and by the way, your ROMs are great and all, but using the comma, period and Shift key every now and then will make what you're trying to say a lot more easy to understand...
As for the problem itself - I've just reinstalled a completely blank ROM (one of dioxda's) and only sync'd my contacts and appointments - NO third-party software whatsoever. And looky here, no crashes. Now I can install one app per day and see which one causes the SODs...

I understand what you are saying on the HTC Tytn II and HTC Touch Diamond 2 the phones I had the Standby of Death with it was due to the phones network/band type being set to AUTO 3G/2G, changing this setting to either 3G only (WCDMA + UMTS 2100) or 2G only (GSM + AUTO) solved the problem completely.
In your case its most probably due to something you've installed which is a lot easier to solve, I suppose when you look in your phones network type setting GSM is the only option and the band is probably already set to AUTO.
I didn't know the Prophet did not support 3G before I posted this, on all phones that support 3G with this problem my solution often solves the problem but it can happen because of certain software installed also.

[Q] HTC HD2 Time Problem

Hello all,
I'm having a problem with the click on my HD2.
It is a Portuguese Rom.
It's always one hour before! I tried to change the time and settings to GMT Lisbon/London, and goes fine. When I connect to the internet, and update some stuff, especially the weather, the GMT goes back to Casablanca.... meaning, 1 hour before!
I tried to change the setting in Manilla settings with now sucess.
Can someone help me?
Thanks in advance
I also had this problem some weeks ago... I corrected it by setting in the data connetion settings the option "sync time with internet" in sense settings.
Also in the start menu I had an app/button which was called "Carrier Time". It seems like it syncs it with the carrier or cell im logged in or something like that.
Are you using "My location" feature?

Time/Location Problem
Hope this is the right place for this question - I have a Telstra HD2 and live in Sydney. However, whenever I do a soft reset/hard reset the default location for time, etc reverts to Brisbane, which is in another state. Creates problems with time, especially daylight saving. I have tried changing all the usual options but with no success.
Does anyone know of any registry setting, etc that might apply. This is my second HD2 (previous one had a GPS problem and was exchanged for a new one - and still the same problem. I also noticed the demo HD2 in the Telstra store today was set to Brisbane as the default location (again, the shop is in Sydney).
Any help???

As suggested above turn of sync internet time and set your time zone manually to Sydney. If you hard reset your phone you will have to this procedure again. Soft resets are fine!

Thanks for the advice, I had tried the above, but with no success. However, I had also posted on the Forum for the Telstra HD2 9193 version and received the answer below from Tmorgan4 which seems to have fixed the problem so I am quoting it here for the benefit of anyone else who might have a similar problem. There are so many places that can cause a problem, the trick is to find the correct one.
Tmorgan 4 says: "I think I used to fix it via Settings Page - All Settings (down bottom right) - Personal - Phone. Under that is a GSM/UMTS Services Tab. Under Time Syncronization disable it."

The problem is there are three ways to sync the time on the HD2:
1) Sync with Internet
2) Sync with telecom provider
3) Sync with Activesync
The first two options use location. If your location is incorrectly determined, disable the location service and set your location manually.
It is my experience the Telco Provider time is not so reliable
Yesterday My provider insisted it was 6:05 when actually it was 10:25.... (I now Disabled it)
Internet time / Activesync time are more reliable, if your location is correct.
Disable location service if the phone determines your location wrong.
I do not know, but I can imagine syncing through Activesync can cause problems if your computer is in a different timezone as your phone (eg, computer has London as location and phone has Amsterdam as location)
Concluding:
Four settings can influence time on your phone: Activesync, Internet Time, Telco Provider and Location services.
TimeSync2 PPC
I had the same problem. The solution I found is TimeSync2 PPC

AT&T: "Network does not provide date and time..."? [Alternative Option]

I have been getting repeated pop up messages, something to the idea of "Network does not provide date and time information, go to date/time settings to change setting...".
I have not had this issue with other AT&T phones. I presume AT&T's network DOES provide time/date to the phone?
Has anyone else seen this? What is the resolve?
Thanks.
Edit:
Here is an alternative:
Install the free "ClockSync" from Market.
It syncs via NTP, is very configurable how it syncs, can sync only while awake or booting up (to save battery), and can provide timezone offset via database or GPS. I have been using it for a few days, it seems to work very well.
This allows us to turn off the network time sync and the clock will stay accurate.
Edit 2:
Lots of apps sync--Google contacts, calender, GApps, FB, etc. I don't know which relies on time stamp. In some cases, the app may unexpectedly alter data based on erroneous time stamp. This is partially why it's important to make sure that your clock does not drift too much.
make sure your time zone is correct because that can cause this.

Thanks for your reply. My timezone was/is correct. Any other ideas??
I was having this exact issue the first couple days with my Note. Had no idea what was causing it, but haven't seen it since. My time zone was also set correctly.
I noticed this the first day when I had the phone. It seems to pop up when switching between LTE and HSPA+. Maybe the phone pings the tower for updated time/date every time the radios hand off?
It hasn't happened again after the first 2 days for me.

samething happened to me the very first day...but i havent seen it that annoying notice since
Mine and my fiancés phone have this issue too.
Had the Note since launch and I got the message for the first time today.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA App
I started getting that when I tried switching to the APN that would (in theory) disable LTE since I'm in a fringe area. When I switched back to the default APN it stopped.
Don't know if changing APN had any effect other than the error messages.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note
This problem may be cell-site dependent. I see it all the time at home, but have not seen it at my office. This is just one day though. I will keep observing.
I just had this happen and I went to settings/date and time and unchecked automatic (use network provided values) hopefully this will eliminate that bug.
Sent from my awesome Galaxy Note!
Ptoryno worke,
Had the note for a day and returned cause I saw and online discount of 50% off so I'm waiting on it to come through the mail. During that day, I has the same problem frequently. I unchecked "set time zone automattically" and it stopped happening.
I came from a Skyrocket running 2.3.5 to the Note which came with 2.3.6 and never had the prompt come up on the SR but I get it frequently on the Note. I didn't have to adjust anything on the SR and left everything default so I'm thinking that it could be a bug in 2.3.6?
I see people saying to uncheck the automatic Date & time so it doesn't use network-provided values. The funny thing is, the SR was fine with that checked and the Note is using the same wireless / towers. It's kind of mis-information since it says "Network does not provide date and time information," unless the SR was bugged and just didn't care to report it!
I only have this problem when im connected to wifi

i only saw this bug while running saurom and just chalked it up to the goofed apn settings and lack of +supl.
+supl helps with location based services which would be necessary to pull the right time zone to set your clock.

Its a network error. The system is trying to connect and update the time and date and it cannot. Its typically going to happen when using the "phone" apn or if the phone cant communicate with the network
yuuuup
I'm going to chime in, I'd suggest call ATT its probably a cell site issue. Does it happen when you're connected to a different tower?

This happened on my Samsung Infuse also. Just unchecked the auto retrieve date then changed it back later. Not the end of the world. End of issue.
