Sorry... newbie question: PPC and Internet by GSM - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

I have T/Mobile PPC Phone edition, I have just flashed to XDA 1.2
Can I surf in internet by using GSM Cellular line and no GPRS?
With my personal account?
how can I do it?
Something about AOL? I have an AOL Account and also AOL program for PPC but can' t commect to the net...
Thanks

Ye you can... But you need to contact T-Mobile to get the Settings for the Connection then:
Start => Settings => Connections => Double Click on "Connections" icon => Select "Internet Settings" => Click "Modify" => Click "New..." => Put your Network Settings and have a nice time,,,
Sorry I can not help more cause I'm not T-Mobile Subscriber...

thanks, but I have other SiM card, I live in Italy....

Whoever.... it does not matter what provider you have, but he should have this service...
You just need to call your Mobile Service Provider and ask for the Settings to connect to there Web Server through your PDA, like Phone Number, User Name, Password...etc

Surfing Internet using cellular line
Firstly you need to ascertain if your GSM sim card is data compatible or not with your GSM service provider. If it is you should be able to connect to your ISP without any trouble by just dialling your ISP number and entering your password.
You should also ascertain you have the GSM username and password for a dial up and not for ISDN or broadband with your ISP.

*G*P*R*S*

Hi guys,
new to the forum.
I got 2 BIG (sorry just a newbie..!) question...
i just got an o2 xda.
a) I managed to set up gprs connection to browse internet pages.
My question is... when I insert my sim in the xda, as soon as my provider (wind italy) is recognised a "G" symbol appears next to the radio signal...but after a few seconds it disappears..what does it mean? that the phone is not working under gprs? should i set up something more to allow the phone to work in gprs mode?
b) can i install any application made for pocket pc on the xda? or does a sort of "porting" exist to make them work on the xda?
Thanks in advance
Paolo
a) dont really understand what you mean
1 you ask about if calls are blocked while you are using GPRS
2 you ask if the G symbol mean that your gsm network dont support gprs
b) no, applications for pocketPC compiled for ARM works under all pda's which have pocketPC and an ARM cpu
I think he is asking why the "G", vanishes after initial connection, is that a sign that gprs is not active or is it normal even while gprs is active. Personally I cant get gprs to work with O2 and I have found no solution even though O2 tells me it is available to me.
that's it! I guess the "G" symbol means that gprs is active at the moment (even for calls). So if after a few seconds the "G" symbol is gone, i guess it means that i'm working under gsm and not gprs.
The question is..assuming that what i'm saying is true.. how is possible to make phone calls under "gprs"?
Thanks a lot for your answers.
Paolo
well because autoconf dident include my country or phone company i set up my gprs myself
i did this under
settings
connections
connections
internet settings - modify
new
put a name
select modem -> celluar line (gprs)
typed in the access point of my phonecompany's gprs in my case [Internet]
opened IE
it wanted user name password and domain
i dident type anything at all
but checked save settings
pressed ok and
it loaded the page and i could suft and use messenger and such
Question 1: When the G sign appears when you turn on your radio, it means that GPRS is available. After a few seconds, it always disappears: this does not mean anything. If you connect to GPRS, the G sign does not appear again. If you make a phone call (or receive a phone call) while connected via GPRS, the XDA disconnects automatically from GPRS.
Question 2: Programs for Pocket PC are all compatible with XDA. Just 2 things to remember:
a- some programs are written specifically for some Pocket PCs (like iPaq), so they might not run on XDA
b- some programs related to mobile phones (for managing SMS, fax, ...) are specifically written for PDAs connected to mobile phones (Nokia, ...) and thus not compatible with the Pocket PC Phone Edition
GPRS IE Errors
The logon and password box when you open IE either mean
1. your user name and password for the GPRS connection are incorrect for your provider and contract or
2. You have proxy settings enabled which you don't need
3. You don't have proxy settings and need them.
Hope this helps
Thanks to all,
i managed to understand...that the "G" symbol is disappearing from the main screen but if i "touch" the radio signal a bubble appears with the provider name (ie. WIND) and the "G" symbol on the right side of the bubble.
I guess that means i'm connected in gprs mode all the time. Thanks.
Paolo
GPRS
Hi Paolo.
The "G" symbol means that your XDA have the GPRS Service active by your cellphone provider.
If you have WM2003, to configure the GPRS funcionality you need to go:
- System Panel - Connections and click in "Connections icon".
- "Add a new Modem connection"
- "Enter a name for the connection and select the option Celular Line (GPRS).... Click Next
- Enter the name for the Access Point (of you provider)... Click Next
- Enter the Username and password, if you need it... Click Advanced
- Enter the DNS Servers manualy, if you need it. Click OK and Finish...
And you have GPRS.
Greetings...
Sorry my english, but it is the best i can.
If somebody has foolproof step by step settings for GPRS over O2 using payg sim, I would be very grateful, I have followed instructions from elsewhere but no joy.

No, you;re only part way there. The presence of the G means that GPRS is available, but does not mean you're connected.

XDA at Orange UK network

Hello,
again I have to turn to the XDA's developers forum specialists for help.
I had to hard-reset my XDA recently. After this I lost the dial up connection that I had with my orange SIM card (regular monthly contract).
It used to work perfectly fine, but now whenever I try to start the internet I receive the error message "unable to connect with current settings".
Orange helpdesk in the UK say they canot support the XDA, since it's not Orange authorized.
o2 helpdesk, says it's a provider problem, so it can only be dealt by Orange. So I am stuck in the middle :-(
What is the proper setting?
Do I need to type in a ISP, DSN no. and dial up no.?
Only filling in "orangeinternet" like in the past somehow does not work...
many thanks in advance

GPRS Settings (WAP)
Profile / Connection Name Orange GPRS
Data Bearer GPRS
Access Point Name (APN) orangewap
Username Multimedia
Password Orange
Authentication type Normal
Gateway IP address 192.168.71.35
Homepage http://orange.multimedia/
Connection Security Off
Session Mode Permanent / Continuous
Port Number 9201
comments on my orange question.
Many thanks for the comments on my orange question.
I tried to fill in some of the data that you mentioned, the XDA stareted also asking for VPN, modem & proxy settings, proxy servers etc.
I noticed when it tried to dial it starts with 011.
Anyway after typing in orangewap, and username, it is now conncted.
On the screen it says dialing from "home" connecting to O2 mobile WAP?
But I can now surf the interenet again, which is fab.
Many thanks , Swifty!!!!

[Q] email problem Tesco APN

Hi guys,
I don't know where else to ask this, it has me totally stumped.
I just changed from O2 to Tesco pay monthly and I can't get my AOL and Gmail accounts to connect.
I've talked through the APN settings with Tesco but they're unable to figure it out either.
I can connect to the internet OK via a browser but my email accounts return an error when I go to inbox and send/receive:
"Cannot Connect", "Cannot connect with current connection settings, to change your conection settings, tap settings"
I've been through it many times without success.
My mail accounts are set up properly, they were working with the O2 SIM, and they connect fine and send/receive over WiFi.
Am I missing something?
(I also have 3 native SD android roms installed on the HD2, they won't even connect to the internet despite my best efforts, phone calls work fine though).
I put the Tesco SIM in an old Wildfire, and it configured correctly straight away
Spent all day googling and trying to figure this out
Help. :crying:
What was the settings they gave you ?
Was it WAP based internet .
What WM ROM are you using, do you have the HTC connection setup link in Settings>Connections as that has Tesco Mobile settings can auto install them.

Thanks for replying
APN: prepay.tesco-mobile.com
Username: tescowap
Password: password
Proxy 193.113.200.195
Port 8080
Yes, I believe it's WAP based.
Rom = 1.66.405.2 WWE
Radio = 2.15.50.14
Yes, I have the connection setup link and I've cleared/reset the database several times.
I also went into Settings>Connections>Advanced>Select Networks and removed all the previous modem settings.
I've used the database settings and also the ones sent by Tesco by text.
Tesco seem to be pretty good, their helpline operator ran through all the settings using his onscreen WM6.5 representation of the HD2's menus (I was surprised they just didn't say "not supported"), but it still doesn't work.
I'm wondering if it could be the Radio Rom, as none of my Android Roms will connect to the internet, (although WM does)
It would be a major task to hard reset, as I have some critical work apps installed and configured just right, so I don't want to do that unless there's no other choice.
If you get another providers sim to work on internet then I doubt it device or radio but rather settings as WAP & proxy is a bit of a pain.
Try the following (I hope has small variation on what you may of tried already !, be sure double check typing & make sure the modem connection has the black selection dot in it once completed; settings>connections>connections>manage existing connections. Add a new modem connection ("New" soft key). Put a appropriate name for new modem connection and choose "cellular line (GPRS)" Next enter apn address, prepay.tesco-mobile.com . Next enter username, tescowap . and password, password . Finish . Under proxy tab , tick "this network uses a proxy.." Put 193.113.200.195 in proxy server box . Tap advanced and put 193.113.200.195:8080 for the first 3 (HTTP, WAP, Secure WAP) and 193.113.200.195:1080 for the last (Socks). Exit from settings then go back in & check you can see the new modem setting & that it the checked connection option, exit again & Soft reset & fingers crossed ...
I'm using a custom WM ROM so don't be put off too much if some details seem named differently.
You may want clean out existing settings or try couple of changes in details if doesn't work :-S
Not a keen fan of your radio version but it is a well used one & I not seen internet connection issues with it but you never know ! so a radio change maybe worth a shot if really come to an end on the settings !
Hi, this is a screenshot of the settings, I think I got it right?
It still doesn't work
instead of port 8080 try 9201 !
I do remember newer builds of Magicall software caused internet connection failure, u happen to have that by any chance !
Port 9201 disables all my internet connection and email still not working
I tried 8080 again, internet back but no email.
I don't have magicall, though I wish I did sometimes
In connections advanced tab under select networks button what do you have selected for programs that automatically connect to the internet ?
Seems it actually connecting in terms of internet means you can't be far off.
Worth running through mail settings & see if anything can be adjusted to help.
Also what mail type is setup here (IMAP/POP3) & does Tesco Mobile have any limitations on mail server connections ?

AOL is IMAP4, I haven't asked Tesco Mobile if they have any specific limitations but the standard settings work fine with the SIM in a Wildfire running Android 2.2, I've gone through all the working settings on the Wildfire to see whether there's anything different there but I can't find anything, though I suppose there might be some small but important setting I've missed
I also tried to set up a gmail account on the HD2, but that doesn't work either
