Quite possibly the most newbesque question ever to be asked. - MDA, XDA, 1010 General

After relatively recently obtaining an XDA with ready installed ROM (from a friend) i've enjoyed every bit of the time we've spent together...isn't it a wonderful toy, if i may use such a derogatory term for such a wonderful piece of hardware.
However, there is one niggling problem i've been having, there seems to be some problem with my brain, that renders me unable to locate an option which lets me show the names of my contacts on a recieved text message. All i get are the numbers, and, not having an immense short term memory means i have to trawl through my phonebook matching the number.
The only time i have found it to work is with an American number of a friend which i updated from my SIM.
Any help please, i will be forever in your debt...
Disclaimer: Only to a certain extent.

I'm sorry, i've just read the sticky's and managed to solve the problem. Please don't think bad of me
Feel free to close or delete this thread.

wouldnt calss the XDA as a toy more of a peice of kit.
you can class nokia 3650 and 6600 as toys as their features aint up to par with that of the xda sereis

hi,
does anyone has "caller2picture" ?
I have the trial version and I want to buy the full one, but on "pocket gear" I've seen a post of a user that bought the full version but he's still unable to assign more then 3 pictures.
Can I thrust them and buy the software or do I have to forget it ?
Thanx

This is not acceptable at all.... Xchange man those ppl are receiving us as their guests and why pay them back by insulting them??? 2 days ago this site or this forum has reached its 500 user and all of them are considering themselves as one family sharing and learning and teaching. Please reconsider your attitude as we all are here friends and one happy XDA, o2, QTEK, SX56 (forgot any?) Family...
Thanks for the ppl behind this site thanks for the members in this great forum God bless us all.

I have to agree with XDA developer Peter Poelman
come on xcahnge - $14 is not a lot for software... that is damned useful...
and entertaining, and intuitive. Instead of moaning why not just develop your own version of the software and distribute it as freeware?
I mean if it cost several hundred pounds and you used it three times you'd have cause to grumble.
Dont forget that programmers have mouths to feed - and being a software developer is as worthy a job as a train driver or electrician.
(Apart from Solicitors & Estate Agents)
I am none of these by the way, but I know plenty of programmers!
Dont forget that we need people like this to develop apps for our phones to make them "far more functional" than our friends nokias, or motorolas are.
Hold on a minute you dont like paying 14 dollars, but you have several hundred dollars worth of mobile phone!!!!
Just try it out. add three pics for your best friends and if you like it then just BUY NOW!

xda site
hi all
this is a great site and i normally log in daily i used to have a nokia communicator but the xda is a lot more usefull and the only real website for the xda is my-symbian.com and that started a bit like this site but turned very quickly into a forum for selling software and not really intrested in the people or the product it would be s ahame for this to happen here there is loads of free software out there try downloading bear share and you will get loads of games. anyway keep up the good work on the website.
regards kevin beecher
So... what about sharing the serial!!!!
caller2picture is pants..
I only wanted to be able to select different ringtones... caller2picture adds its bloatware crap and removes another useful feature <sending an sms from the contacts> (or has nobody noticed?)
nobody has made a program with a little box that lets you do the same thing?
hmmmm

It is useless, because it is generated depending on number on your Register screen. And that one is probably calculated from your name/or other unique parameters of you xda.
Hi!
Anyone got similar problem. The pictures aren't showing themselves regularly and consistently. They pop up many times less than they don't. Suggest anything, guys? :?
What is frustrating is I bought the full version, but it will not work with WM2003PE.

The program does work with my ppc2003. Anyway, you have to remove your sd card before the installation since the system will automatically install the software to sd card even you choose to install on the default location. The Picture2Caller does have some bugs when installed to ppc 2003. That is the software fails to work with all contacts. Anyway, if you feel ok with this, go ahead. Cheers
I want to agree with Arzeb,
This is an AWESOME site, complete with smart helpful people. Please keep up the excellent stuff that gets done here.
xchange: please chill.
THANX to the rest of you.
Hal.
Tried installing it again withot the SD card, still does not work. What happens is, it does not retrieve the contact's name, and phone numbers.

New XDA?

I read in this month's issue of Stuff magazine that a new version of the XDA will be released later this year.
Browsing on internet I found only one link that showed a picture of a xda with a blue back panel and could as well be the original model.
Has anyone heard about this and maybe know where to find more info on this (if O2 will support them for instance) and some specs and maybe photo's?
Thanx
There will be a new version of the XDA but it's not certain yet which company/ies will be releasing it. I heard some rumours about bluetooth, more memory and a faster processor, I haven't heard anything on SDIO support yet.
Bluetooth would be great, WiFi would be fantastic. Maybe even GPS and a 56K color screen (for the freaks among us to watch movies)?
Anyone know the mail adress/website of HTC who makes them? Have some requests of my own....
Hope someone will post here as soon as they find out more..
If it has the newer Xscale CPU it's very likely it will support SDIO. The SD controller is build-in the CPU and all Xscale CPU's support SDIO.

Ok, first off, getting your electronics info from "Stuff" magazine is like getting steak grilling tips from PETA. Plus all magazines like that are typically posted about two months after they are written, making them pretty useless for new developments.
Secondly, predicting a new XDA is like predicting that the sun will come up tomorrow, that winter will come in a few months, or that the curry I ate today will sting my ass tomorrow. It's obviously going to happen.
It's worthless until they say "on this date a new XDA with these features will be available." And when they can do that, you'll already have read it here two months earlier.
pc pro
i have a pc pro subscription. They had a review of the new iPaq with pocketPc 2k3. they went on to mention that all the pocket devices will be getting the update. including XDA.
Tomorrow never comes? But we old get older, and hopefully wiser...

One of the main reasons for a forum is for guys like me to wonder about stuff. Ask questions to other users with the same interest. Sometimes intelligent questions and some times less intelligent, but always within the region of interest of other forum readers. If you feel a threat is dumb, don't read it and especially don't reply on it. No need for smart-ass remarks here, we just want to chat about stuff we like.

Those "what's new in electronics" columns are one of my pet peeves. And I'm a gruff asshole by nature anyway, so it came out worse than intended.
Hehe, no harm done. At least you were true about Stuff Magazine and most of it's other companions.

New XDA details
This s the response I received from Carrier Devices regarding the New Qtek (XDA):
"There are plans for a new Qtek device, however I can't give out any official information. It won't be available until the end of the year, but will have Built in Bluetooth, SDIO and be tri-band"
please refer to topic http://xda-developers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1500 for further information about the XDA II
I guess I got my initial question answered, so as far as I'm concerned, this topic is now out-of-date

Bring on SDIO and the bluetooth!!!!

My XDA got STOLEN!!

Last week on a business trip to Rome, my XDA got stolen..
Offcourse I had it blocked as soon as possible and have password protection on it, but resetting it would make it usable for anyone.
If anyone sees a secondhand XDA for sale from Italy (where they are not sold) please remember me....
IMEI: 350312010049224
S/N : HT220CC15367
P/N : 99HJ00007-00
So... when is this new model XDA comming on the market?!
We thought of a program to stick into ROM which would, after cold-boot, send one SMS to a pre-determined number. Could be a friend's number, or possibly even a web-service, where you can look up all the phone numbers of all SIMs ever in that phone at cold-boot. You could even wait a few days to see if the owner field was ever filled out...
Please go into that, as I will buy an XDA again but feel quite bad about this one stolen and would very much want something to have a little more protection/means of getting it back.
I saw an advertisement on www.thinkgeek.com about a software that would automatically send emails with IP adresses when a stolen laptop is connected to internet.
Something like that could possibly be an option in a theft-recovery program?
Thanks,
Lx
Great idea XDA developer Peter Poelman...you guys should definitly do that!!
XDA developer Peter Poelman, that is one of the best ideas I have heard of!! If there were a server you could register your XDA on, then install the 'tracking' software it would be very cool.
Would it even be possible to get a fix on the location by picking up the nodes that the XDA is near? Effectively your XDA would text you its location, name of the new owner and new number to server where you could pickup the info. Hay-presto, you can inform the provider and authorities and maybe even get it back. I bet you could even sell the software to the providers!!
Gil.
Hold on guys, if you developed such a ROM, it should be clearly stated that it is doing that. I can imagine, if people started offering ROMS, that made unsolicited calls to premium rate numbers, that would be a great, and illegal, business venture.
Anything, that works behind the scenes must be clearly highlighted if trust is to be maintained in a public community
Sounds good though. If i could find all the people that have stolen bits and pieces from me, revenge would be sweet!
I guess that watching out for ROMs that have spy-wearz or nasty apps in the background ARE possible, there could be something about now. Let’s face it the ROM tool is not that hard to understand. And if someone was really that nasty they could make a lot of money in a very short period. After all a premium rate text number has no price cap. But lets not get in to that right now.
The answer to this, like a lot of things in IT is A trust in the developer, B trust that is has not been hackled – as above and C you have noting to hide.
The provider can already see al the calls and text that the sent from your phone. So the only thing for them to see would be your ROM version.
If this was made a voluntary process and secure I can see it doing a lot more good than harm.
Also another though on the spy wear bit, it would be good to have an app that watches the activity on you device and allow you to see it.
Sorry for the rant, Gil.
Oh yeah, we've thought of nasty things one could do. Possibly more scary still: if you have this Action Engine framework, someone holding a private key somewhere can remotely update your ROM, without telling you.
perhaps thats how o2 intended to upgrade in the future?
is it easy to place the AE exe file back onto the xda? its just the one file right?
No, it's a whole bunch of files. They were installed from the operator section of the ROM, though AutoConfig.exe, into device RAM.
I'm not really into the programming stuff, but I was just thinking...
If such a thing was to be implemented, you would not want it to be active until your device actually got lost. So how do you tell your device (that probably has a different SIM card in it) that it should start to broadcast it's location and new SIM information? And where to?
I was thinking of a site where you should register, very securely and only upon activating the 'tracking' program from this secure site that a constantly updated log file of all nodes where the device is connected to a GSM/GPRS network would state the deveice's location.
With this list (and possibly the information of the new SIM card) it should definatly be possible to retrieve the device, with collaboration from the provider/authorities ofcourse.
Also I heard a provider can locate any GSM down to 5meters accuratly when the phone is being used, about 100 meters when the device is on stand-by. Don't know for shure if this is true though.
If things like these could be incorporated, this would be the best software/ROM update ever to be made in my opinion. If there is any way in wich I could be of any help I would gladly be of service!
Two complimentary options would be:
the XDA sends a message to a server whenever the SIM card is changed, unless you enter a particular password first.
Send a specifically crafted sms to the XDA that causes it to realize that it is stolen. This starts it sending location info to the server.
I think you could switch XDA in to stolen mode using a broadcast directly to the PIN on the phone. This is how P2P works in the US instead of SMS. This could be done from a web site and the user of the stolen phone would not know until it was too late.
But then again I may be wrong?
Gil.
this is all good and well, but there will be always someone out there that says this is a privacy thing and they do not want people knowing where they are using their XDA
What should be developed is a Rom that once the owner name has changed, the XDA will then send a message to a server(if the XDA is registered) informing of the new number of the inserted SIM, the IMEI number and all other numbers/contacts straight to your provider. they then contact the new provider for information on the new owner. send the bissies round and reclaim your XDA.
this would be big money to phone service providers as it would reduce the amount of insuance claims and hastle.
if it can be done, then I will be buying it (once i own the XDA !!)

[Q] TG01 - what do you do with it?

After seeing a few new threads start up recently, it was interesting to see how different users have explored the boundaries of TG01 and got the maximum out of it!
I was surprised at certain things this mighty beast can do! I am opening this thread with a hope that we will get more input from TG01 users in terms of what can be done using TG01! May be other users like me will benefit now and in future by knowing that there is no limit to surprises TG01 brings
So question is simple with simplers answers:
What do you use your TG01 MOSTLY for? Please vote for the options and if I have missed out something as 'the most common' act on TG01, then feel free to add comments!
Please can I also request anyone who does something different with their TG01, to post links so that other users could try it and share their views too?
PS: Keep this thread fun but full of information!
Please ADD this to your signature and brag how cool your phone is!!
TELL THE WORLD WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR TG01 please VOTE!
*bump*
37 views and only 1 vote!! come on guys, share how good your phone is!
i have already voted nice thread!
Reading, of course!
One of the thing that every day I do with my TG1 is...reading. I've already read a lot of e-books anywhere..if I'm waiting, on a cue...my book is ready to keep on reading from the last paragraph that I read the previous time.
I had installed an app called µBook, but few days ago I discovered Freda, an free EPUB (and other formats) reader that suits perfectly in our TG01
You can download the last version from http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-freda.html

I love e-books myself, but I couldn't read them on TG01 as I always thought you end up buying and spending lots (I tried B&N) - I am downloading the one you suggesting, it might make me the most happiest and complete TG01 owner ever!

Mate, if you know more TG01 users on the forum, please ask them to vote and share so that we get more out of TG01 from everyone's experience. This might even reveal what sort of tasks are best performed on TG01
It's really good to see from the votes so far that, Browsing on TG01 is what is done mostly!
Considering the complaints of battery drain and crappy IE that comes with TG01, I am sure most of us have ended up using faster browsers and better batteries!
Anything worth sharing to have better browsing experience on TG01 guys?
I do something more than this! (please post a comment and share)
Yes it help me to progress with ROM dev and in english ... of course !!!

It is getting more useful and informative as we get more votes!
Already we know that it works as a great device to browse! So many people use it for browsing..
and many votes for 'I use it for something else' too, but only 2 users mentioned some useful info for us. I wish we will have more ideas for tg01
Most of us still use it for browsing - inspite of claims of bad battery life!
I think it's because of amazing speeds we get with Snapdragon?!
I presume we use Opera/SkyFire/IE - any other browsers you think can work better on TG01?
Hello Everyone!
I am writing this post in most of my threads so that everyone is well informed. I am not sure if you will get annoyed to see the identical post in more than 1 thread. The only reason being, I want everyone who visits particular thread to know that I am going to be a rare visitor on TG01 forums from now.
As you might all know, I went on 3 weeks holiday (it was AWESOME!) only to find out that Orange had sent me a letter confirming that I should F***O** and they won’t be interested in either paying repair costs/ offering replacement handset/ offer any sort of money back for the malfunctioning TG01(s) (6 replacements to be precise) they have supplied me since January 2011! Since last 5 months, I wasn’t able to develop or help with roms/themes as I din’t trust my phone’s behaviour (it froze randomly making hard to know if it’s rom/theme doing it or actual phone). However, I have tried my best to help out in forum and also with beta tests.
My TG01 is now officially in coma. It doesn’t last more than 5 minutes without restarting. This has annoyed the piss out of me and I was helpless financially. However, I have managed to sell this TG01 for spare along with few old WinMos and Symbian phone to get me enough money to buy a brand new San Francisco (the cheapest option out there for smart phone at the moment!)
So, to keep the story short, all these threads, might not see any help at all from me in terms of development. I will still be willing to help anyone and everyone (whatever can be done without a TG01). If anyone would want to use any of my work so far – please feel free to PM me and I will happily share ROMs/THEMES/files etc that will help you to carry on the projects further.
It’s been absolute charm being a part of this forum and will miss it! I will be around in San Francisco forums anyway, so drop me a PM if you ever think of me
Long live TG01 and WinMos
(already saving up to buy new WP7!)
EVC4 Development System
I use the TG01 as a software development platform for a GPS application - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117192
I'm still using EVC4 as it's simple, effective and free. More modern tools are too complicated for my simple mind, and seem to produce enormous slow applications.
I had to produce my own SDK using Platform Builder, but now find this works on most ARM devices; although it grizzles a bit, it gives full source-level debugging. It does mean I have to use XP for development - has anyone got EVC4 to run under Vista or Win7?
I like the TG01 as it's fast and has a big screen. I think it's virtually unusable as a mobile phone.

5 colors, 5 fonts....not sure if I can take this seriously.
So we have to find out your phone which is stolen?
The hell is this ?
Very sorry to hear this! Even I got my phone stolen some weeks ago. It was pickpocketed in crowd. I had all kind of docs, memories in that phone. I cried almost everyday for the first couple of week. Even imagining the moment I noticed my phone stolen gives me fearful goosebumps. Reading through your post makes me realize we are in the very same boat.
Well, following are the major actions I took after losing my phone in chronological order:
1. The night phone got stolen, went to cyber cafe to ask what things to do. They asked for phone receipt
2. The following day, went to police, did both eFIR and written FIR. You gotta ask them humbly and in cultural manner. Keep visiting them in a week or fortnight
3. Posted on socials about the incident
4. Went to ask for CCTV recording but they denied. Also, police said the thief won't be visible enough coz I was in crowd when theft happened
5. Bought new SIM of the phone number
6. Got IMEI blacklisted and on-track by police
7. Put flyers around the area
8. Became religious
9. Tried inacting the scenario at the same place in hope of catching thief but police took cautious measures after my stolen report so probably thief not gonna do that anymore in that locality
10. Asked family, friends, strangers, netizens about their losing-their-phone experience
You can try these.
If you're Indian, then we have a specialized website for stolen phone cases. Otherwise, you can internationally blacklist your IMEI through any trusted worldwide operating IMEI blocking website like this. I am not associated with this website in any manner.
Also, please inform any other potential action that you think can help both of us retrieve phone. I am open to DM. I expect an acknowledgment from you. I hope my post help you in any way possible.
To XDA moderators, I am very new to XDA forum, though I have been reading developer related posts from here since years. I have read the guidelines but still, if I have broken any rule in this post or it has potential of getting deleted/blocked, please inform me first. Love to its members! Sweet and mature vibes!!
