Motorbike Mounts? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Accessories

Hi guys
I've got an MDAII and want to use it on my motorbike mainly for SatNav.
Several problems need to be sorted:
1. How to fit the MDAIII in a position where it can be seen and is secure.
2. Weather protection
3. How to supply power and keep dry
I also want to use the MDAIII with my Autocom Pro-Rider intercom system.
Any help would be appreciated.
John

Have a look at this
http://www.technobrains.com/Otterbox/Otterbox1900.htm
RAM mounts do handlebar mounts too, but offer little in the way of weather protection.
This forum may interest you too;
http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=114

Actually, it's a car, not bike, an Ariel Atom, but the requirements are the same.
Thanks for the links.

Ooooh nice toy. Yeah I'd expect the otterbox and motorcycle mount would attatch somewhere like on the exoskeleton.

I deal with Brodit kit, if you need any advice and I can help, drop me a PM, I like a challenge!
Bryson

Ahh yes Brodit do do a waterproof box in a similar line to the otterbox.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
I did end up buying the Otterbox 3600. A little on the large size but quite impressive nonetheless.
Now I have to work out a lead to connect from the MDA llls 2.5mm socket to my Autocom unit!
A wiring diagram would be good as Autocom said they'd make one for me.

XDAIIs car kit????

hi everyone
ive just bought myself a XDAIIs pda, ive set up TOMTOM 3 sat nav and have bought a BT TomTom GPS receiver. sat navs working perfectly. but got one BIG problem, i cant find myself a decent car kit. ive tried the Arkon CM531, didnt like it-too many wires and very messy, got carkit with fixed charging through the cig-lighter- did not fit my phone as cradle was for XDAII.
Im really stuck so could anyone please help me. im looking for a car kit which will allow me to slide my xda2s in and out easily, hold it in place and also charge it at the same time whilst its in the cradle.
ANY SUGGESTIONS
Same here ! I could not find anything decent. Any suggestion welcome !

Try www.brodit.com, they produce a few different versions ie. power, power/gps or passive. there not bad looking either!
How do you deal with the Arkon RF/speaker interference?
venkie9910,
sorry for repeting my question, but I did not go an aswer yet:
I read here that it was unacceptable...

how do you deal with it?
Thanks,
Chris
I got the brodit one from handnav with a pro-clip and it fits perfectly and looks good (once you've removed the tacky brodit sticker). Only problem is that the hard-wired version isn't available for the PDA2K yet and the cost! A bundle including the clip, holder and charger set me back £70, but you pay for what you get.
Hard wired one is now available with or without gps ps2 port, I have just ordered one with gps, cost £59.99 plus p+p, the pro clip for fitting to the dash cost £15.99. hopefully it will arrive next week
Hi all, I have this Bordit 849582 for sale: http://w3.easytrade.net/brodit_shop/product.dip?item=1225583&fid=1225727
Just buy yourself a Rikaline GPS mouse . Attach it in your car and slide your Qtek 2020 into the cradle and start navigating!
Interesting? Mail me or just reply!
I think people hurry into buying a bluetooth GPS which leaves them with only a hardwired option for in-car. (some exceptions with multiple bluetooth capability) I prefer the inverse combination. If you're using your nav software you need to see your phone so its going to be in a cradle anyway. If you just pop down the shops you can leave your phone in your pocket and your bluetooth carkit still works.
I'd go for a cradle with GPS built in, or a connector for extrnal GPS. Preferably powered (battery hungry these PDAs!) then BT carkit.
But be careful with carkit choice. Some have the awful echo problem. Can't add much more than that except that an M2000 and Nokia CK-7W is NOT a good combination :-(
There is a decent carkit coming that supports talk function and wired GPS. It is already available for the 2020 and its coming for the 9090. It`s based on a CMPC Carcomm cradle. If everything goes right it should be released next week. I will buy it definatly and will keep everybody posted.

try this - can be hard wired or use ciggy lighter connection....

Cheap and Effective Magnetic Mount
Hi,
how about trying a magnetic mount?
http://www.tangshop.com/magnetic-cell-phone-holder.html
Cheap, effective and neat (inconspicuous), but you have to stick the metallic mounting plate onto the back of your PDA (somewhere in the middle, preferably on the battery). Fortunately, the sticky pads are from 3M so they are strong and the residue can be removed with normal dabbing of scotch tape. The metal plate is thin so it does not affect the fitting to existing casings.
The part that sticks to the dash is using the same adhesive too.
I've tried this with a Bluetooth GPS and the XDA IIs on the dash, and the magnet is strong enough to hold the PDA in place even through fast corners and bumps ...
Cheers,
David
Another option is from this company:
http://www.thb.de
However I couldn't find a picture of the cradle.
I have however seen the cradle in the flesh and is it very very nice... even has DSP processing for the handsfree.
It is very pricey though.
Forgot to also add this link.... has a few pictures

I do not know if they have one for the tom tom as I do not know what a tom tom is, but ProClipUSA.com has some great PDA holders for the iMate PDA 2K

Car Mount

Anyone found a decent car mount for the wizard
I need one for satnav. I've seen one for about £45 that has a built in speaker etc - don't really need that
Would be interesting to hear (and see pics) of what people are using
Hi Hays,
Have you considered the Brodit holder solution?
Have a look (link below) or drop me a message and I will be happy to advise (Wizard listed either as Xda Minis or MDA vario)
you have the choice of passive holders, active holders charged by cig lighter or permanent fixed power version also for hidden cables etc. All attach onto a proclip mount that is specific to your vehicle, in a variety of positions on your dashboard.
Hope that helps,
Cheers, Bryson
That kit looks very good quality - seems quite expensive though !!
I use different cars at work, so I need something that can be moved easily. Could I use the holder with a different mount, ie perhaps a vent mount (that's not too hard to move from car to car) or failing that a suction mount (not too keen on a suction mount due to the smaller display of the mini s )
Was thinking of this

Bryson, I'm after a active holder with no cable attached, so that I can add a "Y"-type lighter plug cable that will charge both my Qtek 9100 and my Bluetooth GPS mouse. (I had a similar one for my h6340, and want to stay with Brodit.)
Is Brodit developing such a holder design soon?
Hi,
Yeah there are 2 available from Brodit, codes 848650 & 848655 (Called passives so you can insert your cable as mentioned)
Check this link and scroll down past the Xda Exec holders to the Mda Vario/Xda Mini S/ Qtek 9100 holders
http://www.dsldevelopments.com/tmobile/tmobile.html
Hope that helps, take care, Thanks!
Hello,
I got mine shiped from the US to Germany within 2 weeks from www.thepocketsolution.com which have a fast feedback and good customer support in general. The mount device works perfectly well as expected.
Thomas
I got the brodit clip and horizontal holder for my XDA Mini S from dsldevelopments, and am very happy with both the clip and the service!
I tried one of those cheap ebay mounts that clips onto the airvent but thay was useless and moved all over the place. The brodit clip goes over my S60's vent perfectly and is very solid.
The only thing I would suggest is instead of using the supplied screws to attach the holder to the mount - use velcro. I did this on mine so that I can quickly remove the holder and put it in the glove box. Good for security as passers by cant see I have a satnav mount and wont try breaking in to see if its in the glovebox!
Hi,
Instead of velcro, Brodit make a 'Moveclip', one part fits on the back of the holder, the female (2 supplied for x2 proclips) part fits onto the proclip, and both parts slide together, giving an very strong fix, and also the flexibilty of being able to move a holder between 2 vehicles with proclips/gooseneck installed. (also serves the same purpose of being able to remove the holder from sight to stop the thieves!)
Hope that helps, heres a link:

Cheers,
Bryson!
instead of a car mount I did something different. I just bought myself a nice case for the mda vario (e.g. noreve, piel frama). These cases are made of leather, and therefore they have good grip.
I just lay the case on the kilometer radial in front of me, and it stays there. Even in sharp corners.
The advantages are: cheap as you don't need a car mount and thief protection as there is no car mount visible.

Looking for a recommendation for a good car holder for a car with stiff suspension

I am looking for purchase a car mount/holder for my car. However, as i drive a sports car the suspension is very stiff and therefore I need something that will cope with a very bumpy ride (some of the UK's roads are terrible at the moment!). I also use hire cars frequently, so I need something that is interchangeable between vehicles and therefore can't go for one of the brodit models that is specific to my vehicle.
I received a PDA model specific, European made, heavy duty PDA holder for the HTC Touch HD, by Herbert Richter (http://www.pdahut.com/store/product.php?productid=21157&cat=2385&page=1), but this vibrates quite badly so it will be going back.
Therefore, does anyone have any suggestions for a very sturdy car holder that is transferrable between vehicles that will cope with the rigours of a GTi's very firm suspension?
Thank you, in advance, for your help.
Spudgun
My suggestion ...
I drive a 4 wheel drive car (Renault Scenic xR4) because i like to drive through easy mountain tracks from time to time and that's the combination i have. Probably it's not the best solution but i assure you my HD neve falled down and no matter about vibrations. Also, even when it's not the easiest, you can change from one car to another (i do by myself when taking my wife's car).
It's for placing into an air vent of your car.
Rgds,
Thank you very much for your suggestion
How easy is it to transfer between cars? as i had a really bad experience with one of these once and broke the air vent grille of a hire car trying to remove it

Hummmmmmmmmm ...
Difficult to say, but i never broke it and never broke any grille. ¿Perhaps i did 20 times? For me it's easy to remove it but ...
Rgds,
Get one of those suction cup things from ebay. It's decent quality. The only thing I needed to do to make it work well in the Miata is add some cushion on the bottom so I can rest it against the dash and prevent it from jumping up and down. They move from car to car easily.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Car-Windshield-...34.c0.m14.l1262&_trkparms=|301:0|293:1|294:30
good sturdy support!
I am going to recommend you get a Herbert Richter Gorilla Mount coupled with a custom H.R passive holder.
It's a bit more costly than most other options, but does the best job! Since you can use interchangeable holders on the gorilla mount (eg. if you get a new phone, or a second device) it's a great cost effective option than the non-branded flimsy options normally purchased.
Despite what you may think, it does look 'great' on the windscreen!!
Regards,
- RazzyUK.
Spud_work,
I purchased mine aboyut three months ago, its discreet and completely supports the phone wihtout blocking half of the windscreen

Hope this is of use.

I bought the one pictured below (12 Euros on ebay). Here is my opinion (of course I drive normal streets - I can't say how it does on extremely bumpy terrain).
The suction cup sticks really well to the glass (assuming both surfaces are clean, of course). At first, I was scared that the whole thing would loosen up and fall off, and so I kept checking it constantly, but it holds totally firm. Even when I go to take it off and I release the suction-lock lever, the remaining suction is still really strong.
The tray that holds the actual phone fits the HD well, and all buttons and ports are clearly accessible. I wish the phone would fit just a little tighter in the tray, but it is still fine. I never worried that it would "fall out" or anything like that. I suppose it's also good that it is not so tight that it could scratch the HD when sliding it in and out. The tray can also be easily removed and re-attached to the arm. Oh - and of course, the HD will NOT fit if you have any protective case around it (such as the silicone or hard plastic covers).
The "arm" part is easily bent and adjusted at the two joints, so you can set the HD at whatever angle you want in any direction. Once set to whatever angle, it will not loosen or bend on its own.
All-in-all, I'm very pleased with this so far and I would definitely recommend it. The user reviews I read for it on Amazon do so likewise.
I hope this helps.
Cheers!
Hi Chris Cross
As I am also in the market for a mount to use with my Touch HD could you just answer a few questions about this mount which you have:
1. is it fairly compact as the last thing i need is a mount that's in my face and completely overpowering the HD
2. are you still happy recommending it
3. is it easily changed between landscape and portrait modes
4. any chance of a link for it
Thanks for your help

Hey guys,
got my Herbert Richter Gorilla Mount today (it's actually the Banana Global 1 with the holder for the HD). I have to say that the quality is brilliant and the HD fits very well. I've ordered it yesterday at gps-haus.de and it arrived today. I payed 25euros (shipping included) which is absolutely OK. Anyone interested in pictures?

Yes, post some pic's of this strong holder...
I ordered this one from Brando yesterday.
For me, it has a great design, just iphone like and I used a similar holder for my former phone (Hermes).
I drive a sportcar myself and I have to say, that vibration could possibly occur because of the "thin" arm of the holder.
My old holder did vibrate at higher speed, like above 85mph (140km/h) but could handle strong impacts, like chuckholes, very well.

I have that one and I can confirm that it will shake constantly during driving, which can be seriously annoying. No matter if the road is silky smooth, it will simply shake even from the engine vibration itself.
I had a temporary solution by putting it rather low and using the dashboard as an additional support. This works just fine, so you're probably gonna want to do the same unless you want to get shake-sick from trying to read anything off the screen while driving.
In the end I decided to try one of the shorter car holders that has a stiffer and shorter arm. Will report when it comes in.

I would be interested in any feedback that you have with your new purchase, as i have tried the herbert richter gorilla mount and although that is better, there is still quite a lot of vibration. However, I do own the car with the word's stiffest suspension, so I probably shouldn't expect too much!
I got my holder (look 2 posts before) on friday and I was pleased by the wonderful 360° joint.
But like Rozenthal said, that thing shakes like nothing
It has a far too long arm, so that it can't hold our device in a fixed position.
So now, I mountet the holder plate onto my old, shorter holder (same construction) and I will drive this evening to a friend.
I will post my experience tomorrow!
The one in post #8 is stable. I'm happy with it.

Is there a UK seller for this? as my German isn't very good!
Didn't got the time to report back yesterday.
But I will give you my experience now:
I tried my old, shorter goose neck holder with the new adapter plate.
And it worked really well
It is stable, although i drive a car with sport suspension, so there are some strong impacts on the holder. If there is a very rough street, it produces a few vibration. But that stops very fast, because the holder is much stronger.
But if you need a very stable holder, take the one from post #8 which Chris mentioned.

^that's good feedback...I'm going to check that one out since I'm getting ready to take a long trip on all kinds of roads
eversince i got a brodit phone holder for my old ipaq 6515 from proclipusa.com, I have been using it for all my phones as I just add padding to the holder to accommodate the narrower phones.
however, for HD, with a silicon skin casing (I use capdase), I can just slot the phone into the holder w/o any modification. I kinda like brodit holder because they look 'OEM' (not cheesy universal holder you see elsewhere), at the same time, my ipaq holder could be reused each time I changed my phone with some minimal modification. I change my phone every 4-6 months so it'll be too expensive for me to get a phone specific phone holder.

Touch Pro 2 Car Holder - recommendations please

Hi all.
I'm looking for a car holder for my TP2. Can anyone make a recommendation? I'm UK based and I'd rather not pay silly amounts on delivery other than that I'm open to all suggestions?
So far I've seen and like the Boxwave car holder. Only problem is they're a US company and they charge quite a bit for non-US delivery.
Thanks in advance
I have this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brodit-car-...?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1254855076&sr=8-24
I combined it with my Richter holder (this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/HERBERT-RIC...3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1254855152&sr=8-3 ) because I had a HTC Touch Pro before.
I have the CM929-S: Swivel Vent PDA Car Mount from Arkon that I got from eBay a while back for around $10. It works pretty well with the TP2, and I like it better than suction-cup mounts because it won't fall off. Although, I do like the idea of a unit-specific mount if I could find one.

the Richter holder looks perfect!
Wait Spartan: The richter holder I posted is for TOUCH PRO 1 not Touch Pro 2! You can use the Richter "arm" (don't know the right word) and add the brodit holder.
if you are going to go Arkon, may as well go with the powered mount
http://www.arkon.com/poweredpdamount.php?selFeat=usb_mini
the speaker is fairly useless... the TP2 speaker is louder
does have 2 USB charge port though, 1 at 1.2a (fast charge!) and another at 600ma
a little thicker than the none power version but worth it
so you can charge 1 phone and another device... or a friends phone too
I combine it with a proclip vechile mount and its perfect!
I just got the box wave kit. The quality is good and you can fit the TP2 in landscape with keyboard out and portrait.
They dont give you a dash disk to mount on your dash but suction cup is huge should mount on any window. They also give you a HVAC vent hook as well.
I'd give it a 7/10.
Try This

I also have the Boxwave kit. Good quality. I have it attached to the vent. It was a pain getting it hooked up but once it was on it was great.
TP2 now functions as an easily accessible hands-free phone, mp3 player, and gps system. Man, I love this thing

There were two on the site, and this one LOOKED less sturdy which was my only concern. Having said that, it turned up today and whilst I have not put it in the car yet, I am well pleased.
Much sturdier in reali life than the pictures suggest. Good selectioon of attachments etc. Way better than the ebay one I had for my Touch pro.

Car Cradle

Someone is finally making a car cradle for the Touch Pro 2 that Verizon and Sprint (Not T-Mobile) should be able to use and its cheap. I emailed the U.S. seller and he said it fits though it is really for the GSM Euro versions. No surprise though as it is passive only. Heres a link to their website: http://www.buygpsnow.com/HAiCOM_Car_Mount_HTC_Touch_Pro2.aspx
Anything is better than a squeeze cradle
I have one ordered so will update a review but at $12.95 and $2.50 shipping kinda hard to go wrong even if it only lasts until Proclip gets off their duffs.
I found a coupon code for free shipping. It is hit or miss apparently but worth a try. Code is 430.
Edit: Code did not work

Just a quick question, why do you think squeeze cradles suck?
I've not had one but was considering a universal mount from Arkon, which is a squeeze cradle.

Its been years since I've seen a phone thick enough that the jaws need to be anywhere near as deep as the vast majority of the squeeze cradles on the market yet they still make them that deep, at least the ones that are big enough to hold a PDA. This would not be much of a problem except they use soft foam in the jaws that is almost invariably also very thick. When you squeeze it tight enough to keep the phone from falling out, it has a tendency to roll the foam right down over the screen making it difficult to use things like the slide tray in Touchflo 3D. It is also difficult to remove the phone as after a short while the teeth of the jaw start wearing down and it sticks closed making the button hard to push. And thats with a good cradle like and Arkon, which is what I have been using. Lesser quality cradles are even worse. There are better squeeze cradles that address these issues but they are all for Iphones. Saw a nice one the other day with nice thin jaws and rubber grips that fit the phone perfectly with a friction lock instead of teeth and a cam but it had and Ipod cable and FM transmitter built in making it very expensive at like $69. Looked real nice too with a nice shiny finish like the phone has but at that price, wasn't going to buy something that I had to cut up to use. To bad the company did not make one with a USB cable instead. Unfortunately most of the good stuff is made by companies that drank large quantities of the Steve Jobs kool-aid years ago.

Thanks for the response, very good reasons not to go with a giant squeeze cradle.
I've been looking at this mount http://www.arkon.com/phonemount.php
Curious if anyone else has used it with the TP2.
My phone works splendidly with a $15 squeeze cradle from Walmart. It's not too thick, secure, and does not obscure the screen.
I have an old Treo 650 Pro-clip mount that works perfectly with the TP2. The phone slides in securely and comes out easily. Obviously no active connection but it works great. I put double sided tape in the back of the of the mount and it holds my Fuze perfectly as well.
yo Techitrucker,

Just came in the mail on Saturday. The cheap shipping took one week to the day. Quality of the cradle is very good. The clip at the top is actually spring loaded, not just plastic that bends back, like the Seidio holsters. It is removable if you won't need to use the cradle in landscape to make it easier to take in and out. The cut out at the bottom is definitely for the CDMA phones. It should work with the European versions also. THIS CRADLE WILL NOT WORK ON THE T-MOBILE VERSION AT ALL. It is a perfect fit for my Verizon phone. This is not a cradle you want if you need to use the keyboard while it is in. For me that is not and issue and it makes me uncomfortable having plastic wedged between my keyboard and screen anyways. Seems like it would be hard on the slider. The windshield mount is very nice. It has push button friction locks instead of screws for the joints and the rotation is spring loaded so its easy to rotate when needed one handed. The suction cup is very large and has a good positive locking mechanism. It is larger than the average suction cup so if you need a dash disk like I do, you will need the largest one you can find. Unfortunately it does not come with one. Since they are selling this so inexpensively, that probably a place they needed to cut their losses. The quality of the cradle is much higher than the price. The cradle does not use a standard mechanism to join it to the mount so you will either have to use the one it came with or go to the website and see if they have another kind of mounting solution. This is really the only limitation I can find. You will not be able to use it with your Proclip solution if you have one. Any more questions you have, just leave them in this forum.

I had one for my Touch Pro and it was nice enough but it kind of made the gap between the keyboard and phone wider over time. If you absolutely have to have the keyboard open while driving its probably the best on on the market, though to me that keyboard open is just and invitation to disaster. Its hard enough to keep hands off the phone while closed They are not inexpensive by any means. Depending on how you need to configure it you can easily spend well over a $100 bucks. The powered cradle alone without a car specific mount is $60 which is competitive with other powered solutions, but the non powered ones at $40 bucks seem more than a little like highway robbery to me especially since you will still spend $30+ on the mounting solution for the cradle. Still, if you need that keyboard open its the only decent solution at this time. They have no powered option for Verizon yet, but the non powered one they have listed for the AT&T Tilt 2 will work on Verizon and Sprint. The phones are exactly the same shape as the AT&T phone except for the ports on the bottom. If you want a fitted cradle but don't need the keyboard to open while mounted, this is the posted cradle only real solution I've found, but its inexpensive and good quality.
Now if you want the best of both worlds, I was wrong about the Proclip mounts not working with the cradle. They make absolutely the best mounting solution hands down since there is no damage to the vehicle. They have cradle adapters on the site that will make it work and the price is not to bad.

The suction cup on the cradle is 3.25 inches and this adapter is 3.5 inches so it should work.
I'm not a fan of clamp holders or suction cups, had enough of unintentional flying objects. I usually make my own holders that slip into a vent clip from theclip.com
http://theclip.com/store/Ultra-Clip-with-Vent-Mount-p-16176.html
This time I found a perfect custom made touchpro2 holder for $1.35! It clips right into the vent clip with just a little grinding on the vent clip. It holds the phone solidly and perfectly positioned for easy phone use and GPS mapping.

Nice find on the holster. Never had a problem myself with a good suction cup holder and nothing bounces like a Freightliner. I find that taping a small vanity mirror to the dash works much better than those little round plastic disks since they where designed to stick to glass. If you have two phones and two holders like I do, the small rectangular one they sell in the automotive department at Walmart will hold both and its only 2 bucks and looks nice. I am not a fan of any kind of vent clip. The two worst enemies of electronics are heat and cold and something as heavy as a PDA is going to break the vent eventually. What I have done in the past is use something like this: http://theclip.com/store/The-Clip-Mount-p-16156.html with a holster or case.
I'm going to get the holster. Been looking for one that faces out like that.
I already have a clip in the car so won't need to take my mount with me when I get off the road.

Driving a semi, using not one cell phone, but two???
You're probably a great driver. But I'm glad there are several states between you and I.

Edit: Code did not work
REVIEW IS ON POST #9

Just spoke with porclip.
The t-mobile version has not been developed and they do not expect it to be manufactured soon.
