hp ipaq 6818 - iPAQ rw6828, XDA Atom Software Upgrading

i just got an ipaq 6818, can i flash it with atom rom?
btw how do u do hard reset with this stuff??
i so newbie now... haa...
thanks...
non...

i'll try it anyway, i think hp has block the hard resest function in ipaq 6818, there's even a pocketplayer which u can't even uninstall,...
i'll update once i've completed flashing it..
non..

Hooray!! ive been waiting for someone to try this, I think the HP would be an excellent device with the latest Atom Rom. Im a 6828 user, I would suspect however that the Atom rom isnt going to install due to incorrect device id, but cant wait to hear how you go.
good luck

hard reset is "power+call+handup" then pin the reset hold. I reset many time since this machine is very unstable... it cannot work on heavy PDA work very very slow.. the is a phone + SIMPLE pda function ONLY. This only my personal input since this is not my 1st pda phone and the previous one is better then this... I lost my expectation. Looking for the change

ATOM has more available rom update versions than 6828, it just means ATOM has more unstable system than 6828.

i'm running out of memory, the specs says that there's 128mb flash rom, shared between storage and memory which u can't adjust unlike my mini, there should be another 64mb for the ext-rom which i can use.
so to say, if i can unlock this piece of **** somehow, and implement my enhanced memory structure,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=44448&highlight=
i can save a lot of memory space and of cos this should speed up my device...

USBtoPC uses SD card instead of microdrive

I'm using an Athena (got it 2 days ago) with AP4.0
I had the wifi problem and solved it by myself with cmonex instructions.
I couldn't find a solution for the new problem I have: in USB to PC I select "As a Storage Device" and when I plug my Athena to my PC, the miniSD is connected as a Mass storage device.
I would like to use the Microdrive as a mass storage device.
How could I change this ?
If I remove the miniSD, there is no mass storage device that pops up on the pc.

I don't know if USB to PC has that option, but I do know WM5torage has the option that allows you to select the Microdrive. I know it isn't exactly what you are looking for, but you might give it a shot and see if it scratches your itch.

Thanks ! I just tested and it's working fine !
Well, for the beauty of finding a solution, you can still help me with the usbtopc program but I consider the wm5storage as an excellent solution !
edit: well actually WM5storage is giving me some trouble. I can't copy big files (350 Mo) directly and the device appears as empty on the computer after a failed transfer of one of those big files...
edit2: the solution might be there, I'll report after testing. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2176131&postcount=3
edit3: it's getting worse... activesync doesn't work anymore. My Usbtopc is switched back to activesync and I get an "attention required" message in activesync :
"Connection not valid: Cannot open the connection "57600 Default". This connection is no longer valid or does not exist. Select a different conenction and try again."
However in the options, the selected and only choice is USB.
Am I screwed ? Should I reflash the ROM ?
Once I sort this ActiveSync/USBToPc thing, I still have the will to have the french keyboard layout (I don't care about the OS language but I do about the hard keyboard layout).
If I reflash, should I choose :
- 5-21-08 UPDATE!! AP4 VANILLA 4 SPL1.2 Windows Mobile 6.1 for spl 1.2 and 3.5 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2176131#post2176131

- Athena Project Official ROM and SPL 3.5 upgrade - The Final Release http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=387409
What's the difference between the 1st and the 3rd ? I use the 3rd, would it be better to flash the 1st ?
The 2nd is an official rom ? It's more stable ? Is it still WM6.1 ?
Thanks and sorry for being such a noob, I was using a Trinity before and the Athena is more complex on many aspects.
I will suggest to flash AP4 to have SPL 3.5, then upgrade to the latest Michy 6.0 if you like the manila 2d interface, or MICHY 5.1 to have a fast and stable, full optional, ROM .
I've tested ALL ROMs here, and My athena is almost perfect in the 5.1, SPL 3.5, Michy's ROM
Damn, sorry my suggestion messed up your ActiveSync. I have never had that problem with WM5torage...
Anyway, I have two suggestions:
1) I recommend flashing only as a last resort. Everyone here is really helpful, but there is always a small chance that you will brick your machine in the process. Try other things first - uninstall WM5torage and softreset; or even a hardrest. If you flash with a different ROM you will lose your hardware keyboard settings.
2) If you do flash, I suggest you make a note of your hardware keyboard registry settings. Then after you flash you can reset them. I searched a little for information on where they may be, but I can't seem to find much.
I speak from experience. I flashed and lost my hardware keyboard settings (Japanese). Luckily, I hate my hardware keyboard and never used it anyway.
As far as ROMs, Sergiopi is right. 3.5 to AP4, then Michy's. Personally, I use 4.1. Both 4.1 and 5.1 are almost completely bug-free, stocked with useful software, and super-fast. I turn off sounds for events, turn off all today screen items, and almost every button I press gives smooth, instantaneous results.
Thanks for your help, I flashed Michy 5.1 and I have to say it seems to be a good rom !
I could chose the french hardware keyboard layout with an embedded utility.
Still have some wifi issues (not the same so it might be my personnal network) and I mistakenly sync'ed my windows live contacts with my outlook contacts which is annoying.
Anyway, thank you !

Help me with Atom Life ROM Upgrading[Is this Your question? Here I got the Answer]

Dear members
I was really very desperate to try my hands on ROM upgrading since I got my Atom life. But inspite of all ROM being available here I am not able to upgrade my ROM because it has to be done through mini-sd. I don't know whats going wrong but here are the issues I have faced:
1.I am not able to get the Record+Reset working on my Atom life.
2.I have found somewhere in this forum that 2gb minisd does work. is this correct?
3.Can there be any alternative way to get this device upgraded like we use to do in HTC devices.
I wish to know from all the users if they are having answers for these questions.
This is a must have for a thread for Atom, but couldn't find any dedicated solution to this procedure of upgrade.
Hope to get some solution soon.

What you see above were the most expected questions of a newbie to ROM upgrading in O2 Atom Life[O2 comet]
Here is the most simple guide in upgrading the device. This is based on my personal experience so any deviation ca be expected in case you do it yourself. But most of the steps are just ubiquitous in case of any attempt at upgrading the ROM in Atom Life[O2 comet]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INSTRUCTIONS:
Formatting card & setting the file type to fat16 or fat on your PC or with the help of any pocket pc application.
Then you need to copy the file[xxx.DIO] on your memory card[not in any folder] Just reset the device pressing record[in right middle side] along with stylus in the softreset hole[in the left botton side]
Take Stylus out first & then keep pressing the record button until black screen with minisd detect appears.
Thats it. Now it will start installing the ROM from the memory card.
Things to remember:
1.get 1gb or less card[2gb won't do at times]
2.Format it in windows or in your ppc in either fat or fat16 format[don't do fat 32 it won't work]
3.Copy the file on the memory card[not to any folder in it]
Hope the guide will help you & you will have no problems in updating the phone reply if there is any problem.

Hi guy, can only adv you the pt(1) + (2)...
1.I am not able to get the Record+Reset working on my Atom life: You must Press Record + Reset, leave Reset first.
2.I have found somewhere in this forum that 2gb minisd does work. is this correct: Yes, I always use 2G SD to up ROM (make sure there's no any file in SD excepted AL1.DIO)
Good luck!
I didn't get you my friend. plz be more clearer.
1. Press Record + Reset, then leave Reset first but still keep pressing Record. AL will be in Bootloader mode for yr up ROM by SD.
2. For up ROM by SD, I always use 2G SD to up ROM (make sure there's no any file in SD excepted AL1.DIO).
3. AL can support 4G SD w/o no any problem, not yet test for 8G SD.

naah. i dont think I have ever mentioned that before. If I have, then its by mistake. My bad then.
@Maniac, Don't bother brother. May be it could have been because of some mistake or may be in some other context.
Anybody tried 8gb microsd with minisd adaptor. Actually I wish to post results myself but the problem is that its not available in my city so have to order from ebay so a bit reluctant if it doesn't work.
Thanks & Regards

My suggestion. Keep a smaller mini SD for flashing and a higher capacity card for other purposes. From my personal experience of using a 4GB card. Read is quite slow at times. It could also give issues while booting if you install applications on memory card.
I think I have no other option but to buy one. Hope it won't turned out to be a bad deal.
@maniac, bro why you have this slow reading problem when I don't imagine this can be there in such a high model PPC.
Moreover let me confirm everybody once again that the 2gb minisd won't work for ROM upgradation but 1gb does work like charm so try it w/o any doubts. It is confirmed as I have experimented with few of the phones.
I don't know if this may help you:

Speed of the processor has got nothing to do with the SD card reading speed. It all depends on the card driver. My 4 GB is a pain at times.

Oh Poor dib,
Mate this handset seems to me is identical to O2 Atom phone. So its better if you just check out a similar thread catering to Atom users. Try Wiki if it can help. We are users of Atom life which is not the phone which you are asking about. I could have helped you had it been an HTC phone which I used for long time. But this is my first O2 phone so can't help much. Hope someone knows about this problem comes out with its solution. Good luck brother.

Just out of curiosity, do you have an external storage card inserted?
I inserted a 1gb miniSD from FAT32.
I think you have not followed the instructions carefully. Follow the instructions by formatting card & setting the file type to fat16 or fat on your PC or with the help of any pocket pc application. Then you need to copy the file[xxx.DIO] on your memory card[not in any folder] Just reset the device pressing record[in right middle side] along with stylus in the softreset hole[in the left botton side]

HTC TYTN WM5 to WM6 Upgrade help needed

Hi guys
I own a HTC TYTN (Vodafone 1605) having WM5 and would like to have latest updates and features on it. I checked HTC site and i suppose they are not offering any updates for this model. Please help since i am not very used in doing upgrades etc.
Thanks
Ashok
Start here!
DO THIS FIRST!(MOST IMPORTANT)
HARD SPL

THIS IS NEXT
SIM/CID Unlock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293665
THEN GO HERE
Schap's WM6 ROM (It's great!)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=359458
IF YOU GET STUCK GO HERE
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455859
Mind you, Schaps is a very old rom now, go to the wm06 part of this forum to find roms that are more current.
It may be old but it still works great.
It might be old but i like it. It doesn't hang and all my 3rd party apps work flawlessly even TOMTOM 7.
What ROM would you suggest?
At the moment I'm using REVROM Lite. I changed the flash screens though as I like some others better. I also use Tomtom 7 though I have it installed on my sd card and just send a shortcut to windows startmenu folder. Have no probs whatsoever.
Its really fast and seems to be stable with me NOT having to soft reset at all for the last 2 days... You gotta admit thats pretty decent performance, I've also had no HR's or freezes. Could just be I've finally found the rom and setup that is good for me...
Cheers...
Yeh, i hear ya. I actually flashed two other ROMS on my phone tonight just to see what they were like, but i'm going back to schaps. It was stable and it seemed to give good battery life. I have all my 3rd party apps installed to my 8GB SD card to save space on my phone. Seems to work for me. Thanks for your input. Two heads are better than one unless one of them is a goathead. LOL Anyway thanks again.
Have been having similar problems upgrading my HTC TyTN from its official WM5 to the Official release of WM6. Every ROmor upgrade or program I have used has failed once it has switced the phone into bootloader mode even using Hard-SPL. Ive being crazy trying to find a solution. Hasnt help that Ive had enough trouble getting started thanks to using Vista-64bit and its driver signing problems. I have since sorted that problem and am now not getting any further with flashing the ROM.
I wouldnt class my self as an expert but I also would consider myself a novice as I build PC's and have flashed both my Xbox 360 and my PSP so am used to working in the shady underworld.
Vista Home premium
Ok here's what i've found with vista. I run AVG anti virus and spybot search and destroy on my laptop. When i use my laptop to flash a rom to my phone i have to turn both off. Even then when i flashed to the OEM cingular rom i had to put my phone in bootloader for it to flash. If i let the program put it into bootloader it wouldn't work. Now, when i flashed to shcaps and my preferred radio rom it worked fine as long as advanced network funtionality WAS checked. Before i found these fixes though i used the SD flash method which is in my opinion the best way to go since it is so simple. That is the way i flashed my Axim X51V so i was familiar with that method, i just had to figure out the correct procedure for the phone.
This is from the post that explains SD flash.
1. download hardspl v7 from the first post.
2. extract ruu_signed.nbh and rename it to HERMIMG.nbh
3. copy it to a microsd card, make sure the card is formatted as fat32
4. download sspl-herm from here
5. extract SSPL-HERM.exe and copy it to your phone.
6. insert sd card and run sspl-herm.exe on the phone.
7. you should see the tri-color screen and then it should change to this
8. press power button to start flashing
9. reset when you get the msg that its done
Good luck
OH and if you need the official Cingular WM6 ROM you can download it here.
If you have Hard SPL installed ignore the steps using SSPL.exe as that is Soft SPL. It's not as safe as Hard SPL.
Cheers...
PS. make sure you use a 2Gb or less sd card as the bootloader won't recognise sdhc cards, format FAT32 (most cards are default formatted FAT) & make sure of your spelling as it won't work otherwise - hermimg.nbh.
thankĀ“s you all for help me upgrade HTC TYNT

Is there an upgrading for dummies

Hi. Im trying to upgrade my MWG Atom Life from WM 6 to WM 6.1.
Mainly cause I heard that WM 6.1 is better performance & Battery.
After looking around all the confusing roms I think i shall settle with this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=460145
Other sugestions would be apprichaited but I know if i ask ill probably be told there are many roms out there...
However can someone tell me if there is an installation procedure for dummies. I dont even know how to format my SD Card I dont even know where to start this upgrading procedure.
Im sure u wernt all born upgrading and flashing ur atoms... or where u
dear fuligin,
well, it's all in the wiki. I think you should read it carefully.
but this is my suggestion on how to upgrade your device (that's been written in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=460145) :
Up ROM Guides: (up from MMC)
- Battery over 70%, MiniSD is smaller than 2G, format FAT16 (on PC is FAT).
- Download and extract with the password below, copy file AL1.DIO to MMC.
- Press Record + Reset, leave Reset first => ***MiniSD Detected*** => waiting 100%, Atom Life auto reset and you have new ROM!
Thanks
Thanks armand_x3m
So it seems to be as simple as the instructions. I shall attempt it and see if I have a working phone after that For some reason Im thinking that this upgrading procdure is more complicated then the simple instructions.

he Windows Mobile Image Update System - Updating your ROM without losing data!

please rom cookers have a look .can u guys cook rom for our device by this method .
if we got success in this matter no device will be bricked.
i m not so aware of technical terms .so i cant advice u guys!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=520009
sorry for my bad english
i hope u will understand what i want to say
thanks!!!!!!!!
We are aware of this system, but right now, the system is under testing and not fully working. Rest assured when it becomes fully ready and if its possible to use it on gene, we will definately use it.
I said if it is possible, because, on gene, the concept of ULDR partition doesn't exists as far as i know. And ULDR partition is an integral component of that system. ULDR was most probably introduced in WM 6.1 but since Gene is a WM 6 device, it doesn't have the parition layout entry for ULDR. I could be wrong, this is just what my logic says based on my current information.
Also, it wont prevent bricking, as for the system to work, you will need to flash a ROM that supports the ULDR partition and the update system itself, before anything else. For that, you will need to patch your SPL as cooked ROMS will never have the HTC's digital signature. And as we know, patching the SPL is the reason behind all the bricking mess.
But anyways, thanks a lot for sharing
Double Post!
Will it ever work?
I have read the thread sometime back, but I have a few queries...
1. When you upgrade your OS from, say 98 to XP or XP to Vista, there always is a performance issue (compared to formatting your hard drive and doing a fresh install). And since our WinMo are nothing but hand held PCs (well you can say that, it got a processor, a hard disk (ROM), RAM), I guess that issue will crop up here as well.
2. What will happen if you have a 3rd party s/w which is incompatible with the new version of WM? Those of you who are in the PC tech field for a long time, you know after you have upgraded your OS, you can't use that software, neither can you uninstall it ...
So there will be issues, if I am not wrong.
But thats only my opinion. Most pple here are head and shoulders above me technically .
@Addicted: Well, Here are my opinions on your queries :
1. Yes, if the registry of the PPC is having some problems, then it will be an issue. Its a bigger issue in PCs as compared to PPCs coz in PCs the software are huge in size and they write thousands of entries to registry, modify system files etc. SO when an upgrade occurs, these changes either cause a corrupted registry, or in the second case when system files had been modified or replaced by a program, these files will be again updated by the OS and the program may not work, and if its a system level program with deep roots in system functionality, it will cause the system to slowdown at least or crash at worse.
These issues dont affect PPC much coz, for one, PPC software are usually small, they dont write much in registry (ms office on pc for example on PC writes a few thousand keys to registry while registering COM servers etc while MS Office on PPC just adds 10 or 20), and since the OS files are in ROM, they cant be touched by a software. They will remain overridden, if they have beem overridden as the updating process doesn't touch the phone memory.
2. Think again buddy, this is not applicable for WinMO. When you flash a ROM, you already change your OS version, so that will happen anyway, if you flash a ROM or you use the update system on an existing ROM.
I hope this would have cleared your doubts.

Actually you did not get me about the second issue, what I was trying to say is, if you flash your ROM, you incompatible program will be deleted (obviously) and thus free up space, but if you upgrade, your program will still take up space but will be of no use to you. Since most of the programs in Winmo are stored in Windows folder itself, it will be next to impossible for 99% users to identify the files to delete .
i already talk about image update in visual kitchen for gene thread, all this take lots time. da_g bepe and lots senior ppl are working on this its required new kitchen new rom format
as per i know it's required more rom space which not possible on gene rom
thanks !!!!!! guys for taking interest.
i like it because i have bricked my gene 4 times and got new motherboard.
but now my phone is not in under warranty so i cant take more risk.
i have done all methods correctly but unfortunately i was failed every time .
so after a year of trying i m still using wm5. so i want a new method without
zero risk for updating my rom.
Sorry buddy, but I dont think you can damage ur MB by wrong flash .
