Upgrading For Begginers: Guide? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

Sorry if this i inapropriate or something, Just have some questions:
1. Is it possible for someone knowledgebale unlike myself to write a simple how to, step by step on the generic process of upgrading the hermes ROM. Maybe it can be a sticky then, i know there is lots of info but i feel that maybe it's not easy to decifer it all.
2. Does upgrading you ROM void the warnty, be it if you bought a tytn direct or your on an Orange contract etc.
3. Can the m3100 be upgraded without sim unlocking?
4. Which in the opinion of the mass's, is the best ROM choice currently?
thanks all.

Instructions are in the wiki, the process is quite simple, download exe file and double click on it, connect your PDA using usb cable, click "next" 3 or 4 times and that's it.
If you get an error during the process, do not disconnect the device and follow detailed instructions in the wiki:

Yes, it voids the warranty if you flash a ROM which is not an "official" upgrade from your vendor for your device.
That is... for example if you have a TyTN and upgrade to Imate ROM, it voids your warranty, but it does not void it if you have a JasJam.

yes. Added this as a FAQ.

thanks a lot for your help, very much appreciated, does anyone have any good recomendations - and reasons - please for replacing the orange ROM, i have:
ROM: 1.23.61.4 7/13/06
Radio: 1.06.00.00
and I'm not bothered which branded ROM i have, i just want the least bugs, best comm speed/quality and most functionailty.
thanks a lot all, im sure other m3100 users will be as happy as me!
Azz

About the voiding warrenty thing..... I managed to get the guy in the Orange store who signed me up to a contract and sold me the phone, to say that it would NOT void the warrenty if I updated the ROM to any other one, no matter who provided it (I even asked about I-mate, or HTC). I also happened to have the MP3 Voice recorder on my Eten M500 going at the time.....

I've made a Upgrading FAQs section on the wiki:

O2 Trion and T-Mobile Vario II ->ROM upgrade to HTC TyTn

Hi all,
I'm quite new at ROM upgrading, so I apologize if any of my questions will be annoying to anyone.
I am about to buy O2 XDA Trion or T-Mobile MDA Vario II in Germany, and I plan to flash English ROM on it.
So here are the questions:
1. Will any type of ROM work on this brands of device ?
(Can I flash HTC TyTn English ROM on them. If not which ROM's can I use? Which one do you recommend?)
2. Will flashing new ROM unlock SIM ?
(If not, can you recommend me some good tool or method)
3. After upgrade to English ROM, will everything be in English ?
(Including all OS+Office apps. and keyboard layout, or do I have to set registry keys manually after?)
4. Which is the last known stable English HTC TyTn ROM (or O2 English) ?
(that it's enabling HSDPA also)
5. How to extract original ROM from device ?
(itsutils tool, or is there some better solution ?)
6. What is the benefit of Extended ROM ?
(does it exist Extended HTC TyTn ROM ?)
Already searched on forum, but still couldn't find answers to some of my questions. Anyway, I want to be sure before I do it.
I would appreciate any answers and/or advice.
Thank you all in advance.

No, it will not, but most probably your device will be Sim Unlocked.
If it is not, there is no free way of unlocking it *yet*, you can SIM Unlock it using imei-check service for 20pounds. See more info here:

Everything will be in english, but in German O2 trion you have an AZERTY keyboard (mapped to QWERTY after upgrade). If you want it to be AZERTY again you can change the layout using the keyboard registry hack found here:

Again, see this page for the latest roms:

Most of the roms come with HSDPA enabled, and if it is not, you can enable it using SetHSDPA /enable or fit4cat hermes tweaker, see more info here:

You can dump the original rom, but you cannot flash it back... most probably this will be quite unuseful for you.

Re: O2 Trion and T-Mobile Vario II ->ROM upgrade to HTC T
Thanks Pof for quick answers !
Correct me if I understood it wrong, any ROM (HTC, O2 English, I-mate etc.) should work with both brands (O2, T-Mobile) ?
How can I then fall back to original ROM (if I would need it for warranty reasons) ?
Is the Extended ROM must, or can I live without it also ?

That's right, you will get a Vendor ID when upgrading, you just need to run the upgrade utility twice without disconnecting your device. This is explained in the wiki too.

As O2 or T-Mobile has not released any rom upgrade yet, you cannot fall back to original rom. There is no known way of doing it because the typical commands to backup/restore to SD card have been removed in the Hermes bootloader. So upgrade at your own risk or don't upgrade if you pretend to return the unit
Mad_M said:

You can live without it, but generally it fixes some things (you'll not be able to do video calls without it for example). All the cabs are not needed and there are some customizations, skins, etc which are really annoying for me. What I generally do is "reset" before the ExtROM installs on first boot after hard-reset, and then manually install the cabs I want: some taken from TyTN rom, some others taken from i-mate rom and some others taken from Dopod rom.
Hope that helps!
Upgrading at your own risk ... that may be risky ... LOL
But i did it and its worth,...... still waiting for the new O2 ROM ...
I've written a wiki page with all this:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeFAQ
Can I flash HTC ROM and then add O2 Extended ROM ?
Will I then have all O2 specific stuff, and O2 skins?
Did anybody already tried this combination ?
Thanks in advance...

Now O2 has released a new Rom, so if I change to i-Mate I can always change to O2-Rom
Is That correct?

The O2 released ROM is in german, if the original language of your O2 branded Hermes was german, then the above statement is correct and you can flash any rom without worries as you can always revert back to o2 in case you have to return your unit
Thank you
I have bought my Trion yesterday but it's in german, and I want in english so I found this forum which is great.
Thank you gays for the good work.
Can you provide some other forums or sites with information about Software for PDA and other stuff.
I will spend the entire week reading the forum.

Questions about bootloader and upgrading for hermes

Hi everybody,
This is my first post here and first of all id like to say "THANKS FOLKS" for the great job you are doing here just for your passion!
Im writing for Italy and im about to get an "english" (from U.K.) genuine and not branded Htc Tytn so, dont worry, im not about to bother you with questions about italian dumped roms or stuff like that!
Tytn will be my first pda phone and my first "experience" with WM 5 so, before posting, i tried to read as much as i could just to avoid posting old questions, but i didnt find anything to make it bright: if id like to upgrade the rom, the extended rom, the radio rom of my tytn with a genuine htc rom, extended rom and radio rom without upgrading the bootloader, how can i do that?Is it possible?if yes, how?
I ask that coz first, i suppose my tytn will come with the 1.04 bootloader since its brand new, second coz id like to be able to just upgrade the radio rom without upgrading all the rest and third, coz im not really intersted in making it "super cid" or anything else since i wont mount any other immage than the htc ones...
I dont know if i said something wrong or already asked and, if yes, my apologies...if not, i really hope to get some answers...
Tnx everybody and see you next post...
Greeting, Jello

Hi Jello79 and welcome to XDA-Dev, I see you've done your homework of reading and searching before asking, and no... your question has not been asked before, so we're not going to kick your ass yet (just kidding!)
If you extract a shipped ROM you will see there's a NBH file which contains the following ROM parts:
Bootloader: IPL.nb & SPL.nb
Splash Screens: MainSplash.nb & SubSplash.nb
Radio: GSM.nb
Extended rom: ExtROM.nb
WM5: OS.nb
This NBH file has a signature generated with a private HTC certificate, and if you change a single bit of it, the signature will not be valid, so the bootloader will not accept to upgrade the device showing an "invalid cert error (255)".
So the answer to your question is unfortunately "no", you are not able to flash other ROM parts without flashing the bootloader, because all existing NBH files contain a IPL & SPL on them.
Hope it is clear to you
Tnx pof, fast, detailed and bright...now i "just" have to decide what to do..do you have any suggestion?
I think it worths to update all the shipped rom to the newset one...even if it avoids me to upload only the radio rom...what do you think?
Last question:making my tytn a "super cid" one, would make the warranty void?
Tnx in advance,
Jello

Sorry I can't answer that... depends on how you want to use the device and what do you expect out of it, and how happy are you to loose time changing roms, applying registry settings, installing cabs, etc... If you're a business user with no time and mod to play with it, I'd keep the shipped rom, otherwise I'd go on with upgrades.

Want to upgrade ROM on my SPV M3100

Hello,
I got my SPV M3100 about one week ago. Was bought from Orange so only Orange sim cards were working. I used HTC_Hermes_SIM_CID_Unlock_v3a to unlock it. (and superCID). That was the only modification I did to the phone.
My phone is freezing at least 1-2 times / day and I would like to upgrade the ROM. I was thinking to use the last official ROM from Orange (this one).
Info from bootloader screen:
HERM100
IPL-1.01
HERM100
SPL-1.40.Olipro
Device information
Operator version: 14.123.10.702
ROM version: 1.23.70.2
ROM date: 08/14/06
Radio version: 1.16.00.00
Protocol version: 32.53.7018.01H
Do I have to do anything else before running the official update from Orange?
Thanks
Do you mean anything else besides read the wiki and other threads in the forum that would point you to places like MrVanx's guide?
Seeing as it's an official ROM from Orange, you won't invalidate your warranty by installing it, so you should be safe to just download and run.
But why would you want a (legal) copy of WM5 when the (slightly murky, legally) copies of WM6 on here are so much more FUN!!

Read the wiki & the forums because the RUU included in the rom you want to install is not compatible with the SPL you have, and your next question will be... "I get a USB communication error..."
Thanks all for replying.
Should I follow this guide ?
Another question...if the phone is superCID doesn't that means I can try any ROM i want?
Please guys, I just want the last official ROM from Orange on my phone without bricking it.
Please let me know what should I do? And don't tell me to read wiki, I'm reading it since I bought the phone but it's not very clear for me....What should I do first ?
Surely if you only want the latest official rom from orange, then the people to talk to are.....Orange. (But as you have played around with your SPL already, you should see Pofs advice)
This site is really for solutions that go beyond the official releases.
I decided to follow MrVanx's guide. Everything was ok, I'm at page 5 now.
Please take a look to this picture and tell me if I have to select HERM200 or HERM100 on device option.
If I go to setting - device information - identity I see HERM100.
Thanks

yes, that is your answer - select HERM100. (although, I am not sure that it really matters.)

It matters if the device is not supercid or doesn't use SSPL / HardSPL, but you can use wilcards on the CID, so for example to make a NBH valid for all hermes models you can label it "HERM***".

WM6 Loose Warranty?

Hi, I have just bought myself the MDA Vario II obviously on T-Mobile, I have a years warranty with it, Is there anyway to make a full backup of my Vario with WM5 on incase i ever need to take the phone back to T-Mobile and because I have put WM6 on it voids my warranty? I am from the UK and there is currently no WM6 ROM on the t-mobile UK site.
WM5
There are full WM5 ROMs from T-Mobile Vario II users in the wiki on this site you can download and re-flash you WM6 device mate.
so say i tried installing WM6 and it messed up, leaving me with no OS on the phone, i could then just install the WM5 ROM?from t-mobile?
I had a loose warranty, so I stapled it to a stack of paper
there is really no need for you to try being funny. i asked a serious question, i wanted a serious answer.

Lighten up mate; legitimate play on your words. You said "Loose Warranty" when you meant "Lose Warranty".
Anyroad you can go back to a version of WM5 should you feel the need. You cannot backup and restore your rom in the way that you are implying.
My strong advice to you is to read as much as possible on here on both Upgrading and Downgrading. When you are ABSOLUTELY sure you know what you are doing then proceed. If you don't do this then you will probably permanently damage your phone.
There are some essential things you must do first to ensure safe upgrading.
A good starting place to gain this knowledge is the wiki.
Good luck.

How To: Remove HardSPL

In the unfortunate event that you need to revert back to your carrier's official rom to send your device in for service or an exchange, with HardSPL installed on your device you will be unable to do this as technically it voids your warranty. Fortunately there is a solution to this.
the-equinoxe said:
You can flash the ROMs with the RUU in the ROM package, should you have trouble with upgrading, try Mun's RUU (thanks for the tip Boto).
So no need to downgrade before upgrade anymore.
But don't flash ROMs containing IPL/SPL. -(This means do NOT flash an official Rom)

There is one way to revert back to an Official Rom should you need to though.
In order to flash an Official Rom again, you will need to remove HardSPL because flashing an Official Rom with an IPL/SPL with the patched SPL already installed, you will find yourself in the possession of a very expensive paperweight.
To remove HardSPL, you will just need to follow these simple instructions:
1. Download SoftSPL by the-equinoxe.
2. Download the IPL/SPL based on your device and carrier(attached below)
3. Extract SoftSPL to its own folder and then extract the nk.nbf file from the correct IPL/SPL to the SoftSPL folder.
4. Run Start-sSPL.exe and follow the simple directions. It is almost fully automated(your screen will turn white during the flashing process and it will appear to have crashed. This is normal so just proceed like normal)
5. HardSPL should now be removed if everything worked properly. Depending on your device and Carrier, download the appropriate Rom for your device:
T-Mobile MDA Official WM5 Rom
AT&T 8125 Official WM5 Rom
Vodafone Qtek 9100 Official WM5 Rom
Orange SPV M3000 Official WM5 Rom
O2 XDA Mini S Official WM5 Rom
6. Flash the Rom you just downloaded. There you have it. You have successfully removed HardSPL and reverted back to your carrier's latest rom and restored the CID lock.
Please be aware, I take NO responsibility if someone were to use the files provided in this tutorial incorrectly and damage their phone.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Credits go to the-equinoxe for developing SoftSPL and making this possible.
Nice tutorial.
I have linked the Hard SPL thread to your topic.

Awesome. Thanks!
Hum... just a quick question:
I own a Qtek 9100 from Vodafone here in Portugal... if I would flash those G4 IPL/SPL, wouldn't that mess up my IPL/SPL country ID?
Also, it would make it impossible to flash an Vodafone PT official update (they never released one or I would flash it but anyway...), right?
Is there anyway of getting the IPL/SPL from another Wizard that hasn't been CID Unlocked and dump it so that I would give it to you, so that we can start a database of CID Locked G4 IPL/SPL's, just in case someone needs to send it back to factory for repairing?
Guess it was a lot of questions

Actually, you can use ANY G4 IPL/SPL pack, and then reflash to your original carriers ROM.
Just put it into bootloader, kill wcescomm.exe, and flash.
EDIT: Sorted
Thank you for this. I just bricked my Wizard and fixed it. This post was very helpful.
