Is it worth upgrading from Prophet? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

Hi all,
I am currently using a prophet upgraded from Magician. Just wondered if it really worth upgrading to TyTN. I know that it has a faster processor and a slide out keyboard with the expense of some compromise on the size. To me size is a big factor. And I love my Prophet especially the design. But I would definitely like a faster processor. I dont think I would worry too much about the slide out keyboard. For people who already using TyTN, is it really faster than Prophet apart from the numbers? Is it really worth upgrading?

If you don't want a keyboard wait for the HTC Trinity, meant to be out towards the end of the year

Hmm, it is good one. I wont mind a keyboard as long as it doesnt add to the size. I dont mind a keyboard on my prophet 8)

I would and I did!!

Hi. I too have the prophet but went for the upgrade to the T-mobile variant of the Hermes/TyTN. I don't rgret it at all, but unless, like me, you prefer a keboard, superior camera interface and options and HSDPA (fast Internet at home or over UTMS-3G) and Video calling capabilities, you don't really need it. The 400Mhz CPU is powerful, but unless you intent to heavily multitask or use skype, you won't see any difference in speed if you're running your prophet overclocked at 240MHz! Just my 2 pence worth.
I still have the Prophet (my daughter is using it), but I wouldn't change back to it.

Thanks for ur reply. For me size does matter. I dont understand why they cant incorporate a keyboard and still make it smaller. I like the tytn, with the jog wheel, keyboard and good processor. But it does look like a brick.

New StarTrek coming - HTC S420

Just an FYI -
There is a NEW StarTrek coming soon. This, of course, will be available all over the world and Cingular will be caring it. There are some major upgrades to this device. (GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS850, UMTS1900, UMTS2100, WM6, 400Mhz CPU and a 2MP Camera) Not to shabby for a clamshell.

Here are the specs - http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=727&view=1

as cartman would say, sweeeeeeeetttttt!
Where have you read anything that Cingular will carry this for sure? I'm hoping that they will but to date all I have seen is speculation.

John - Here are some articles from the press. Also, this does have the GPS chip in it also. The downside is that the preliminary specs show a USB 1.1 speeds. Arghh!! Why have a phone this nice with USB 1.1 is crazy! Not all that bad though.

128mb rom and 64mb ram is useless in a device with these specs. You will have limited opportunity of putting it to use without running out of memory. And why such a meagre battery? I would have thought that cingular 3125 has set the way to go.
sales figures (the future of WM flipphones) ?
Does anyone have sales figures on the 3125 ?
Basically, I'd like to know if it appears that Smart flipphones like the 3125 are popular enough that we can expect strong future developments, even an increase in their prevalence.
There's a constant little battle, e.g. in Treo forums, WM forums, as to whether *everyone* wants a QWERTY, whether candybay-QWERTY phones are the "one true" form factor. I for one, prefer no QWERTY, and a flipphone. I have a feeling that I'm in the minority -- but that's ok. The real question is: Is it so small a minority that we can't expect much in the way of future offerings. The 3125 is really the only current example of this form factor (there were the Samsung i500, i600, and the Kyocera 7135 and the Moto MPX200 in the past). Is the future not terribly bright ?
I really want an 3125-like phone WITH a touch screen, running full PPC. No way ? Why not ?

We may be in the minority, but I'm totally with ya - that is my ideal converged device. The numeric keys are the important ones (especially in my case, where my employer enforces passcode lock if I choose to do Exchange sync, so I am punching in numbers all the time). But Qwerty tends to add a lot of bulk on a device that I want slim and pocketable - so if you want slim like I do, touchscreen and stylus should be good enough for text entry. I think most people haven't worked with stylus enough to see that it can be pretty fast.
The 3125 is really the only current example of this form factor

Well, if you are in the US, there is one other offering now. If you don't mind a CDMA network, Verizon recently came out with the Pantech PN-820 WM5 flip smartphone. Not significant worldwide, but maybe a hopeful sign for our favorite form factor...

Well I still agree we are in the minority, but a couple of manufacturers are about to give us our wildest dream and see if it flies. If you haven't already, you need to check out the upcoming i-Mate Ultimate 9150, supposed to be available in June this year. It's everything you've mentioned - flip-phone with WM6 Pro (full PPC with touchscreen) and a very nice spec sheet:
http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=720
The only thing it is missing that I really want in my ultimate converged device is built-in GPS. For that, I am keeping my eye on the upcoming HTC P5500 (aka "Nike"), supposed to be available in September. It is a numeric slider instead of flip, but similar idea so maybe close enough for me...
http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=736
I agree, the 3125 form factor is the way to go. I can type much faster with T-9 than with the Qwerty anway. Unfortunately, everyone seems to be in love with either the bricks like the 8525 or the Treo.
Thanks for the pointers to coming promising smart flipphones. Perhaps there *is* a god ... We should throw the upcoming Samsung SGH-i770 into the same mix: with its innovative QWERTY, it might just solve the debate between dialpad and QWERTY:
http://www.handcellphone.com/archives/innovative-qwerty-full-keyboard-design-samsung-i770-cellular-phone#more-109
Is there any way we can ask/suggest to HTC to build a StarTrek with a touch screen and full PPC ?
still no wifi? WHY?!
I'd gladly forget 3G and include a WiFi chip... Because when I don't have a signal, I love to surf and find WiFi hotspots, and I have all my calls forwarded to a skype number when unavailable (sort of like UMA, tho uma isn't available yet).
I wanted the StarTrek so badly, but lack of WiFi breaks the deal for me! I was hoping they'd add it to this one... *sigh*, guess I'm stuck with my tornado for now, with wiFi.
new start trek
i have qtek 8500 and its a fantastic phone now with this new one i could replace it
pitty the new one hasnt got wifi otherwise what i heard about it is a very good phone much better and faster than qtek 8500
I agree, I would give up 3g for a Wifi chip if it would cost acouple bucks more. I access the internet at higher speeds with a Wireless internet at home and work! The internet via Cingular is SLOW, even at it's fastest. Its like comparing dialup with high bandwidth. Cingular can not come close to 15 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload speeds.

Yeah it does look nice. the only con I can see from the specs is the 64MB SDRAM. It should have been loaded with a 128MB and it will be the godzilla of all ATOMS hehehe
some little add-ons left by MWg that was not integrated with the atom v
* a standard 3.5mm jack would be nice as well
* where's the IR? no more novII remote hehehe
Very nice...love that it has gps!
Seems it will be released in feb...I'll be getting one then
and its quite cheap! AU$839. htc touch cruise will be $1159!
Looks like it is QVGA (320x240)
thinks the Zinc II is nicer...
It be great if CPU up to 624Mhz and 1GB ROM like Atom Life and plus 128MB Ram
Love that camera is 3M Pixel
Don't know why they put gprs onto it but not increase cpu speed/ storage for big gps apps/ RAM for fast cache
Is it 520Mhz cpu perform faster or better than Atom Life??
Although i like the look of Atom Exec than Life or V
In my though
It will perfectly for me if
- CPU Better than or Equal 624MHz
- RAM >= 128MB
- ROM >= 512MB
- OS >= WM6
- GPS built in
- Camera >= 3MP (Better if 4MP or 5 MP) with better Zoom function
- Better Speaker than current Atom
- Less power comsumption (Conflict with CPU Speed) or Greater Battery
- LCD more than 2.8"
- Better HeadSet and can use with 3rd Party stereo earphone with FM enable through it
- Better Bluetooth Stack for Better music via bluetooth stereo with FM enable through it
I'm greedy ..... he he he
hehe, I like your suggestions! Also needs:
- 640x480 resolution screen
- Infared (only so I can use novii remote)

I have said I won't buy any other Atom, just look at the popularity of AtomExec and its supports that we are getting.

MWG stated, that the new devices are from Arima and Gigabyte and they don't longer have a partnership with Quanta and Asustek.

had an 02 Atom for 20 months now and very happy with except the IR cover fell out... kept 02 ROM updates and has been stable with very little resets (could go many months with one). As with anything that becomes popular (aka iPod) there are going to be issues. Believe they really need to get their service game in order and hopefully MWg is more than a name change and fix that ... but they are coming out with some good looking/spec devices... Zinc II, Orbit II (HTC Touch Cruise) Atom V etc... because of my experience would consider but understand others may not .... we can only base on our own experience and mine is yes would go there again

Not going to argue with you. One of my friend is very happy running with his Windows 2000 and couldn't get him moved to XP even with a gun pointing at his head. Different strokes for different folks. But, being a Computer Junkie, I can guess what majority of the people like or dislike in gadgets and very seldom err.
AtomExec is very sexy, I paid HKD5,900 for it so you can estimate the time frame. Mind you that I already had an Dopod 818, an Treo650 and an O2 xda (818pro). The logic of wanting an AtomExec is like wanting a hole in my head. Tat tells you I am an early adapter and don't mind to pay for something I like. Its screen is smaller and darker screen than I would like. But the built quality and size is perfect for my taste. I also bought a custom high capacity battery and a nice leather case for it. However, AtomExec freezes quite bit, not fast enough even with 520Mhz because I have to hang another language platform in it to use in China. The company hardly put out any updates. If they had responded to any question, the answer was usually "No' or "We have not planned for it." or similar. I am fairly sure non-geek phone users will go for iPhone. Geeks will go for HTC's more advance phones. Of course there will be some left for Atom's family.
My Kaiser has 3 meg pixel camera which can take a picture of a business card and put the name, phone numbers .... , company name into the contact book directly. When I am lost, I turn on its GPS and walk 10 Meters and I know whether I am on the right track. I have the entire China map in it. It supports 8G microSD card and I put hours of MP3 in it. Its bluetooth support stereo.
Scrolling command dial, many hardware buttons, screen is bright, response is quick, good size storage memory. Qualcom 400Mhz CPU has dual-core, an ARM9 and ARM6 built-in. Plus, important for some folks, ton's of fans keep making it to have better and better features or looks.
Yes, there is something I don't like about it. It does not have an infrared port. Integrated mini plug does not allow charging and listening music at the same time while sitting at a desk (need to get a 3rd party adapter RMB25) and I don't need the sliding keyboard.
-------------------
There are only two guys, wonderful people in AtomExec circle who dedicated their time putting out two near-final WM6 ROM's but all other HTC phones have more ROM's than you want to count.
Again, if Atom V has the Kaiser hardware, I won't mind go for it immediately. But with its middle of the road hardware and past customers supporting records, unless its price are low enough, I would wait...
It is just my 2 cents, I respect your feeling toward your Atom!

For a confessed tecno person a liitle bit upset you are trading in old currency and such a low denomination like your opinon should be worth at least a 1930's penny's value also like new technology...
if the atom v comes in at $835 (as have seen) it is cheap with the specs as i paid $1200 AUD for the original atom ... but will upgrade after seeing the short list of Atom V, the zinc II & touch cruise but from there who knows... might be happy like your mate in 5 years saying .. nah, why upgrade it does all i want it to do ... then you can roll your eyes at our buying for needs mentality and say get with the program ...

palah, everyone has his own opinion, but most of what jychan28 said is right. I am an O2 Atom user since Atom. However, O2 has a lousy after sales service. I am stuck up with Atom Exec at the moment (cause I spent my last cent on it ) and now waiting for good times to change this to an HTC device most probably Tytn-II or Touch Cruise and good riddance from O2.

I would say yes, it is a downgrade in terms of speed and rom size on the Atrom V, but what about the hi-price paid for HTC devices. Also you can always expand it using sd cards, and personally i never like choking up the internal memory.
There are reviews on the Atom V already. And a video review on the 3D/Video performance.
If you ask me after watching the video, I'd rather trust the Atom V over the Touch Cruise.

Raphael Slower than a Kaiser [Video Added]

UPDATE:
I was convinced that my new Touch Pro felt slower and laggier than my good'ol Kaiser, so I decided to test them toe-to-toe.
The Kaiser is running HyperDragon's OPAL ROM and the Touch Pro is running ROMeOS 1.22.
I somehow can't believe that the TP Is so much slower than the Kaiser, or is there a logical explanation that I have not heard about yet? - Is my new device defective?
HELP!
[ Watch the Video ]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,
I just traded my good ol' Kaiser for a (German T-mobile) Raphael.
After spending a week getting tired of the white t-mobile branded software I decided to flash a custom rom.
After Trying DCS's v15 and later ROMeOS v1.13, I can't say I was happy with either of the performances of any of them.
Please, I understand the hard work Chefs put into their ROM's and I do not mean to bash on their work. This thread is mainly to figure out what I'm doing wrong, or maybe even if I have a defective device.
After trying out the DCS ROM, performance was pretty damn good... Though my phone kept tossing me errors (Mainly shell32.dll and other .dll and .exe errors). Along with random freezes and reboots.
The ROMeOS seems to be more stable, but it's missing alot of little things I liked about the DCS ROM.
But overall, the snappy speed of the original T-Mobile ROM is gone.
Scrolling the Menu Icons at the bottom was blazing fast, opening files, programs, folders, etc worked just as intended. Though the biggest loss in performance is clearly noticeable by using the album and doing the "circle" gesture to zoom in a picture. With both the DCS and the ROMeOS ROM's the zoom "Stutters in" instead of gently zooming into the picture (Hell, even my old Kaiser is WAY faster and smoother in comparison).
So... is this normal? - am I missing any important upgrades or cabs? Any tips or hints to speed it up a notch?
Thanks!
Weird indeed,i tryed dcs and rome Os,they are both stunning/amazing faster then the original one.
I always do a hard reset before and after flashing a new rom, maybey that will work?
I am coming to the TP from a US T-Mobile Wing. With me upgrading from 64Mb of RAM, this thing is smoking fast. I haven't had the luxury to enjoy some of the amazing devices available in the European/Asain markets, but compared to every US WM device, this thing is a hell of an upgrade.
I can't sympathize at all, simply due to where I've been with previous devices.
Good luck
I've had pretty much every HTC device that has came out since the Wizard, and I've always noticed a big increase in performance after flashing pretty much any custom ROM.
Not so on the Touch PRO.
Even my Kaiser is able to play fullscreen stutter-free video, and I can zoom in and out of pictures without 'lagging into a zoom'. So I'm wondering if my TP is defective.
@Tinuz, yes, I've tried hard-resets (lots of them, before and after flashing a new rom) with the same results.
Bump!

TF2D vs TF3d?
How can you compare phones using different programs.... that would be like benchmarking 2 PCs using different benchmarking programs and then trying to compare the results... youre comparing 2d vs 3d.... put TF3D on your Kaiser and then compare them, you might think differently.
yeah exactly, your running tf2d on kaiser and tf3d on diamond, put 2d in diamond and it will go like a rocket!
Plus no addons? why s2u2?
I think the difference is the VGA resolution. AFAIK the high resolution display and the much higher amount of pixels compared to TyTN2 requires a lot more CPU power. So I wouldn't doubt that TyTN2 could be faster than TP. But I imagine living without the VGA resolution anymore.
Yes, I agree with the 2D/3D thing. And again, I'm not trying to say "This is better, or this is faster" I am merely trying to figure out WHY.
Yes, I also believe the VGA resolution requires some more processing power...
But then again... zooming on a JPG picture?
It's not just the 2D/3D manila, it's the overall performance of the device that has me worried, playing videos, opening programs, running programs, etc. The Kaiser seems to beat the Raphael in pretty much everything.
If the main reason is the 3D manila... how come nobody has came up with the idea of making a 2D manila ROM for the TP? The visible differences are minimal and the performance increase is ... well ... a lot. =)
Thanks for your feedback!

I've been wondering this for some time. I think it might have to do with the whole VGA/QVGA stuff.
tf3d hasn't been completely ironed out yet...so putting it on kaiser still wouldn't represent true performance.
I have an ELFin and am in the process of getting a Raph, and I can tell you guys now that my ELFin with Onyx Ultimate 3.2.1 ROM is lightning fast in most respects, oh and WITH Manila 2D. Let's not forget that ELFin has a 200Mhz processor and no 3D or 2D acceleration. You guys taht are worried should de-activate M3D for a minute and watch your phone come to life. Oh and M2D seems to have been ported to VGA so you guys should give it a shot. Let's wait for a ROM as well though.
Though I do wish M2D had a tad bit more anim. Just adds to visual appeal...
I'm totally happy with my TP speed, maybe probably because Ive never seen a tytn2
Im just unhappy about GPS and signal str

It looks to me like you're comparing a Touch Pro's TF3D interface speed against a Kaisers M2D interface speed. Of course, there's a huge difference. Install M2D on your Touch Pro and disable your TF3D and you will see how it flies.

Touch Dual or S743?

Which of the two would be better off?
I currently own the Touch Dual but I do sometimes miss the full qwerty keyboard and I'm just wonder how much will I be missing from having a touch screen cable device to a non-touch screen device and is it true that Standard is more stable than Professional?
And I'm assuming that Standard edition won't let you create office documents and I can only pray that when Opera 9.5 comes out, that they'll make a standard edition one.

THANK YOU FOR your insight... have you ever used Professional and missed anything else about it besides the touch screen capabilities?
You can expect less comfort if you'll use Rose as a car navigation. Smaller display, interface can't change as needed...
With this one exception you will rather find only PLUSES of Standard. Possibility to run applications just by hold of numeric key, bulit-in voice commanding, ability to synchronize Inbox subfolders in Outlook, numeric hotkeys in menus...
No doubt. If you need to work with the phone, take the Rose. Currently absolutelly the best smartphone on the market. I throw away all the stupid touchscreen devices months ago. Touchscreen is good only for long internet browsing and photo watching etc.
There is one other thing worth thinking about.
Battery life.

I own a HTC Rose after owning a Qtek 9090 and not having a touchscreen i don't find a miss because the Rose is simpel in use and super stable.

What phone would you ditch the Titan for?

In looking at the latest offerings from phones, I am curious what people (who own a titan) would upgrade for?
The Touch Pro is the upgrade for the 6800/Mogul. But, It's not that great of an upgrade at this time because know the Touch Pro 2 is on it's way by end of year.
So would wait for the Touch Pro 2, or would you gamble and see if we have an Touch HD2 with keyboard?
My concern is that the new HTC (and it has to be HTC....XDA forums is what adds value to the phones when carries don't) devices are not leaps and bounds upgrades. No 3d acceleration is a big thing as we round the corner on new device OSes.
The Qualcommm procs at 528mhz seem too slow, so I hope HTC has some mid year suprises for us.
Well with verizon it doesnt matter what phone it is, they somehow screw things up and get things a year after the fact, but, I cant believe Im saying this, if the PalmPre comes to VZW and gets video recording...might look there.
If a Touch HD 2 is coming out, it's a ways off. The Touch Pro 2 was just announced. HTC doesn't announce phones often. The original Touch Pro was announced almost a year ago
im digging the samsung omnia by verizon..
i have sprint now..
but with the family plan and data plans (2) it would be $176 a month.... screw that... im at $85 a month now...
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/...t&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=4366
I would totally ditch my phone for an HTC Touch Pro2. That thing looks so sexy and anything has to have more memory than the Titan. If only there was a way to add more to it.
Touch Pro is close but it has mediocre battery life.
The TP2 has an odd sized screen that would lead to compatibility issues.
Right now, Nothing. The Xv6800 does pretty much everything for now. They might get smaller, more memory or maybe a little faster but, it's not a major change.
The current phone, tho is low on the memory scale, does GPS, all WM features, even newest builds of WM 6.5.... I find no need to sign a 2 year contract and not get any really new features in a phone...
When WM 7 devices start showing up (muti-touch, more like iphone feature set), then I will start looking for a new phone...
but, that is just my 2 cents....
David,
I think I am with you on this. The "upgrades" of the Touch Pro and the Touch Pro 2 are not compelling enough to spend 5 bills on, or sign a new contract over.
If only the Titan had more memory, I'd be fine with it. It drives me crazy using Opera or the new IE with all of the low memory issues.
Also there is a good point about the screen size. The current titan is QVGA, and there are many other devices using QVGA. The Diamond/TP are VGA. The new Diamond2/TP2 are WVGA.
So will WVGA be the new "standard" resolution apps are written toward? Will VGA fade quickly because there are not that many phones that have it today, and may not have many with WVGA coming down the route.
If someone could offer a legit upgrade to 128+ megs of memory for the Titan for a reasonable price, I think they could make some serious cash to tide people over.
A Titan with 256MB ram and a new processor. I just realized how much I love the form factor and have come to terms with it's thickness (though I'd prefer thinner), and I am in love with the hardware buttons which make me say that.
But I will likely get a vogue soon because my titan's power button is broken (detached from the main board) and I'm having charging issues. I might replace the xv6800 but verizon has discontinued it and the vogue is free. It's also thinner and I don't know how I'll get over the keyobard and the wifi, but my xv6800 might become my wifi device since I don't need an internet connection constantly, and my 6800 would probably work when I do.
However, I think the touch Pro 2 looks really nice. It has a better keyboard and bigger screen-which I have wanted, but I really would having that ok button. But with the bigger screen it might not matter that much. I want the touch pro 2 to be the iPhone...really.
No one makes the phone I want, no one ever will I think (though the Blackstone and TP2 are close), but I also want iPhone software and a capacitive screen. So if my 6800 didn't have problems I might be lusting a bit over the touch pro and of course the touch pro 2, but the titan should just be given the TP's internals!
I like the 1Ghz Toshiba phone . . . not sure if it will be offered CDMA. I'm locked into VZW with family plan. I'm up for free2 in August, so I'm excited about all the new handsets coming out. I just hope VZW lives up to their promise of open architecture hardware and brings some of the better ones to their customers.

That is the one I want.
256mb ? What do we live in the dark ages ? What would you really want on a phone ?
I'd think at least 2-3gb to start with for memory. Files these days are big, and with all the multi-media features they support I would think we should start seeing phones with much larger memory built in, personaly I kind of expect it on my next phone.
I got my 6800 when my 6700 died for the 3rd time (thank god for insurance), so not under a contract here. My 6800 does almost everything most of us need as of now.
Come on WM 7, get here with some cool azz phones !!!!!!
Touch Pro
Touch HD
or
Tungsten W (HD with a keyboard)
DavidinCT: I think you're confusing RAM with just regular storage space. 3GB of RAM in a phone is like 10 years off

I dont have that long to wait.... I WANT IT NOW..
plus it is probably like when the cd rom first came out..
they released the 1x but had the 52x designed and made..
1x then few weeks later 2x then 3x to 4x to 8x, 16x etc..... all in the name of making money....
There is nothing out now that makes me want to upgrade. The TP is great but has even poorer battery life than the Titan. The Omnia is on VZW and would cost me almost 2x what I'm paying now per month. I'm also about fed up with WM in general, the promise that the next version will fix the performance issues and improve and simplify the interface has become old. I like what WM can do, but it requires way too much attention and 3nd party software to do it. I'm interested in what the Pre will bring and what Android will become. I'm a bit disappointed in Androids progress though, it's much slower than I thought. If I stay with WM, I will wait for the TP2 at least. This is of course predicated on the continued life of my Mogul.
I jumped for a sprint touch pro (on verizon) and have to say it was worth paying ~$400 off ebay to have the device. It is faster, more stable and a huge step up from my titan. I had to send it back to get the usb port fixed and it is almost painful to go back to my titan. I love my titan, don't get me wrong, but the Touch Pro was worth the upgrade in my opinion.
Not saying I wont run out and get the TP2 or HD when its available!
There aren't really any phones out now that interest me enough to replace my XV. I love my xv, it's the best phone I've ever used. Sure it has its quirks and needs a soft reset every now and then, but I can live with that.
The TP is a great device no doubt, but I can't get over the lack of hardware buttons. I use my "OK" and "Messaging" and "Start" button all the time. The TP just isn't better enough to warrant changing devices. Also, VZW has a neutered version, which bugs me.
That being said, what would make me upgrade? It will take a WM7 device with significantly better hardware or possibly a new Android device. Sorry G1, T-Mo sucks and I don't like your hardware. And as cheap as RAM and flash memory is, I expect the next generation of devices to have at least 512 of RAM.
Touch Pro 2 .. but I would still keep the Titan to play with
as the new phones has just about everything .. not much fun..

It is also important to note that more memory (memory = RAM; storage = ROM) means lower battery life. Sure, memory may be cheap, but battery tech hardly ever changes and battery life is a large complaint about current gen devices as is.
