help - seeking the ideal car mount

hi to all
i have recently purchased my vario along with copilot live and im in the process of searching about for the ideal car mounting solution.
firstly, i use different vehicles so portability between vehicles is important. i dont mind if the device is dashboard or windscreen mounted, but the option of either would suit best. im looking for a vertical holder thats active, and if possible, can house the copilot gps unit too, making life that bit easier when moving from car to car and less messy. if the unit had a built in speaker too that would be a bonus.
another option im interested in is a leather/metal case that could just be clipped on to a mount when in a car - maybe with the speaker and gps unit attached.
am i asking for too much? im sure ive seen solutions for other pdas, but not for the vario so far...
also, id like to know what experiences anyone has with goosenecks - is the vibration too much, especially on the motorways? is the pda too heavy for the suction pad over time? are fixed mountings any better?
ive also seen normal car chargers and 2 amp car chargers - anyone know anything about these - are the 2 amp ones surge protectors?
this is where any recommendations or links would be helpful...
regards
dan
Here's a good site to look at: http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/8670.htm
thanks, ill take a look - i have a feeling ive seen it already though...
there is a universal suction gooseneck mount available, but ive heard bad things re vibration at speed and reduced suction over time.
do you have any experiences re goosenecks?

Car Holder Bracket with built in Speaker

Hi
I use my wizard in the car, and have an adapter (ebay,£3) that goes from the headset out to a microphone and has a 3.5 socket - this then plugs into the mp3 input on my car stereo to give me a full hands-free solution - works great, but I have to unplug the headset connector to use TomTom, otherwise I can't use my stereo while I'm driving!
Anyhow, I've seen a car mount with built in charger and speaker on ebay and at http://www.pdamods.co.uk/products.asp?cat=125 - I was wondering if anyone else had got one and what they thought of it.
My main question is whether it has a built in microphone so that you can use the phone when its in the mount, or does it render the phone useless while it's in there?
** BTW, if anyone want's an easy to install copy of TT6, mail me!
No, that mount does not have a built in microphone. But it works well in combination with a BT handsfree.
That looks a lot like the i.Trek mount offered by Semsons. That mount has a microphone mounted in-line on the cable connecting the Wizard speaker to the mount's powered speaker. It's not shown in the photo but it's on the right side of the mount.
Now if they only made one that powers it and connects an external antenna in one step!
I really wonder if engineers who design stuff like this never get out or get to play with equipment they develop?
I have had a Nokia 6340i for many years and had the handsfree cradle in my vehicles and they were absolutely the best thing since sliced bread! Now however, the newer Nokia's aren't compatible with that kit, so I couldn't upgrade the phone. I was forced to finally buy a new phone and got a Cingular 8125, but now I see there's no powered cradle with antenna connection!
It's really a shame they don't think designs through to the end users needs! I also bought the Pioneer DEH-9800BT stereo, but it doesn't look like it's going to be worth it since I have to tell it to connect evertime I get in the vehicle, which means I have to remove it from my belt case and dork with it to get it connected. The radio also has a limit of 350 contacts for the primary user and I have in excess of 600 and growing so I guess it's going back.
Any other choices anyone can suggest for a Cingular subscriber? I really just want a hands free method for using the phone in the vehicle without having to meddle with the phone or the HF device and also be able to pick up external antenna connection like the Nokia car kit provided for many years of reliable service!
Thanks for any help!

XGPS Car Kit

Hi! I came across the following car kit on ebay;
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=130053711622&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=003
Does anyone have any experience with it? I'm very interested to know if it has an integrated microphone (not very important).
Mostly, i'm asking if it has any audio out(from the pictures, it seems like there is one), so that i can connect it to my handsfree, or even better to my car stereo and to an external microphone (maybe by hacking my present handsfree)
Thanks in advance!!!
I have that one and i got it a lot cheaper than that at
http://www.pdamods.com/products.asp?cat=125
it does have a speaker that is great for TOMTOM or similiar programs very load with it in would not recomend as a hands free kit as echo feeds back
I've been looking for this for a while now in Canada or US...

I think they are not the same!!! The one you show, comes with 3 options for mounting(in conrast to 1 option for the one i linked), and it seems similar to the one found in many ebay stores(and web stores), advertised as TOMTOM mount!
Anyway, microphone is not a problem form me, since i'm planning to mod it and connect an external microphone andalso my car stereo for audio output. This way, i'll have a car handsfree kit, and play music through my Wizard!
Will the 8125 fit in this? The site doesn't specifically say that it will, so I'd rather ask before I buy. If anyone can answer that I'd really appreciate it.
I bought one, and it's a great mount. The speakers broke on mine though.
I bought it also, and i'm planning to mod it. I'll replace the fitted 2.5 mm jack(2 rings-3 contacts) with one taken off my handsfree (2.5mm 3 rings-4 contacts). Then, I'll have outputs for microphone (propably also for volume control & answer button) and for audio to connect a powered FM Transmitter!
Does this sound good! I'll start in some days, and i'll try to post images of the process

GPS system

I have a Siemens SX-66 running windows mobile 6. I'm trying to find the best GPS solution for this device. which GPS receiver is best (I looked at eBay and I found so many bluetooth receivers, didn't know which one is better or known to work well with Blue Angel) and where can I find a car kit (mounting kit to install the phone inside my car). I will get either TomTom or iGuidance maps.
I appreciate your help guys.
I Have been using OnCourse that is small, slim, anti shock rubber case and cost about USD 50.00 @ amazon.com. I use it with destinator and works great. You can find the spec here.
Today I don't drive without my BA with destinator.
my O2 Xda IIs (WM6) paired with Holux M1000 (GPS) - work excellent
Maps = Mapking2007 + Malsingmaps - great map for malaysia & Singapore
Thanks for the replies. I looked at the Holux M1000 and it looks nice, has good reviews, I think I'm gonna go with it. another question, where can I find a Windshield mount or a holder that can fit the phone to install it in the car. is there a specific one you guys are using for your phones?
Thanks again guys.
You should looking for Universal In car Windscreen Holder. BUT dont forget to have the in car charger together.
Here's the dash mount I used:
http://www.proclipusa.com
Choose your country, then use their simple shopping wizard. I bought the 971612 and ran the power cable to my car's fuse block so the BA charges. Works very well for wardriving with wififofum.

Thanks so much!
This is great looking mount -- much better than my current gooseneck-suction cup windshield mount. The best thing about these is that I don't have to destroy either of my vehicles to mount them.
YAY!

[Q] Car Mode Accessories

Does anybody happen to have a list of whether various car chargers and/or kits switch the Titan into Car Mode or not.
Also, is there any way to see or preview Car Mode manually as there is with Dock Mode
Many thanks
Andy
I think the car mode is an Android function, not Windows Phone.
Looking at HTC's website it looks like it's only avaiable under Sense 4.0 which I think is Android only HOWEVER, this link suggests the Titan has it built in.
(Sorry had to seperate as I'm new user)

/htc-releases-new-htc-titan-car-cradle-with-car-panel-app/
The car panel works in the new Locations version 2.1 (build2213.18230) phone can not be dormant or in lock screen to use.

Thanks, well like some of the other guys on that thread I have a fix car bracket so don't really want the HTC car kit (it's expensive too) but somehow need to find out whether holders from Brodit, ProClip etc will activate the Car Panel

I have the ProClip mount without the built-in power. I love their products and it is a great mount.
I see no need for the Car Panel as I have everything at my fingertips.
HTC are currently saying it is only enabled with the right car kit plugged in AND a car which has the Bluetooth Phonebook Profile capability ???
HTC Titan CU S600 switch the Titan into Car Mode.
For a dock to trigger phone into dock mode, it needs specially made microUSB plug. For example, for Samsung Android phones, the microUSB plug needs to have PIN5 connected to a 600k resistor to the ground. Ppl on Samsung board has been documenting the various resistor values for triggering different functions for Samsung phones for almost two years now. Not sure if there is similar efforts on HTC phones.
But, to answer OP's question, no, generic docks won't trigger such docking mode. Only OEM docks can.
Thanks, I understand that the Dock Mode is enabled using resistance across pins of the USB cables however I am trying to find out whether the Car Panel mode is activated in the same way and/or whether it uses the Bluetooth connection to the car as well.
In case your still wondering I have just got this kit (£20 from the forest) and it opens locations when I plug it in , I have no Bluetooth in my car so cant vouch for anything else working.. Just gotta see if I can find away to open Navigon instead.

Cool, thats the HTC kit and it's come down in price a lot. I wanted a fixed one rather than a sucker one but thanks for the info. Also, as an aside what ROM are you using and are you pleased with it ?
