GPS Nav - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Accessories

Hi this might sound like a dumb question. But I was just wondering if I can use my imate jasjam as a navigation system to be able to get street directions I know it is possible on other PDA/Phones like the O2. Also would I have to pay as this is done via GPS on other fones which the jasjam doesn't have.

Sure you can use GPS with jasjam/Tytn.
1. Buy a 1GB or 2GB microSD card.
2. Buy PPC GPS Nav software from www.66.com or www.tomtom.com
3. Buy a Nokia LD-3W or Globalsat BT-338 bluetooth GPS receiver from eBay.
That's all you need.

Thanxs for the fast reply I have looked at the GPS receivers on ebay and they dont say the jasjam? Also do you know any software that will work in Australia?

Well I have got a Jasjam on order (been waiting 6 weeks but should be here in 2-3 days) and I have a I-Blue GPS. I also have a TomTom 6 on my IIs which runs great and has maps of the whole of Australia and you can get maps for all over the world. When I get the Jasjam I will pair it with the I-Blue and see how it goes. I will let you know how I get on. Also how are you finding your Jasjam? Also how are you finding battery life?

To be honest I got it when it first came out and I have a few issues like the keyboard not working sometimes, the fone freezeing a coulpe of times the active sync screwing up on the PDA forceing a hard reset to fix the problem. Battery lIfe not sure I listen to it on the train and it goes from 100% to 90% and this is every day so I charge it like twice a week. Also the bluetooth plays Up. I have performed 2 hard resets. But in all honestly I have learnt to live with the porblems but after a hard resset all the problems disappear. I love my JASJAM. Which also comes unlocked from TELSTRA

I am getting mine from Telstra. Thanks for the info. I take it you didn't get yours from Telstra? Because if you did I am a bit worried.

Of course I got it from TELSTRA. The guy who sold it to me said "you can expect this as it is a new product which is the first in its class". Also if they tell you that you get 2 months free internet it is not true they told me that can then i noticed by bill said $150 for data usage so I rang up and complained and got two months for free for real and also a credit on my bill Also it is pretty expensive if you dont get a data pack I only use the net on it at home on my wireless so it doesnot worry me. Just becareful of what they say

I once got hit for $200 because Journal Bar http://www.omegaone.com/journalbar/ppc/default.htm connected to the internet to update the news and I didn't realise for 9 hours and in that time it had updated 9 times!!!!!!! Because I am getting the Jasjam on a business plan it is 50c per KB so I thought that it was best to get a $29 data pack or their could be a nasty surprise on the bill. Over in the UK on T-Mobile you can get unlimited GPRS for seven pound and here it is sometimes 50c a KB!!!!!!!!! As soon as they were released I got over to the Telstra shop to look at them and to see on their pricing and I got told that I could have one included on a $50 business plan so I went away and made a appointment with the accounts manager to get a few of them and he said that it would have to be on a $70 plan and I have been waiting 6 weeks for them to get them in and they said on Thursday that they would have them in within a week so I should finally get them. So it all just goes to show that with Telstra you have to do all the research yourself or they will stuff you round.

Ok got mine on the $80 plan but the options are pretty crap. Also this fone as present can not be insured I asked for it and they said sure no probs fill in this form and we will fax it of and it will be insured for $8 a month. Then a lady ring me and say no insurance cuase it is a PDA/Phone what is the go with this?? miss informed again. Also you are unable to check the account balance on the phone form the phone for some reason or if you manage to you get charged for it whre as every other provider offers it as a free service. But telstra makes you pay for everything

I have rung the accounts manager each week to see when they will be coming in and each week he is "I don't know and don't care I have other customers to deal with bye" and that is what they are like when you have you have a business and all the mobiles with them!!!!!!!! I felt just getting them online from the USA but I was concerned about the warranty and as Telstra is the only store that sells them you are at their mercy!!!

That is kind of true you could of purchased them from 3 but they only have stock of 500 in AUS, and you have to pay for them whereas with Telstra you own them and they also come with 2yrs warranty standard. Do you know where I can buy a cheap bluetooth GPS receiver from as I want to try the GPS. I think that any bluetooth reciever will work cause all it is doing is just sending and recieving a signal. Then I just have to find the software I had it before but I lost it

All the GPS software on E-Bay http://computers.listings.ebay.com....QQfromZR4QQsacatZ64371QQsocmdZListingItemList

How much do you want to pay for the GPS? A good one is about $150 inc postage.

$150 is fine.
"For Sale - Unofficial TomTom 6 Navigation Software for Pocket PC. This software will work on any bluetooth enabled Pocket PC running windows Mobile 2002 onwards with a SD Card Slot. The Software will be delivered on cd with easy instructions on how to load it on to your memory card." Man this sounds like the guy has downloaded the sw from the net and is just selling it LOL.
Also how big are the maps and program if I need a min o 512mb I currenty have 1024 which is half full with music?? Cause others say min 256mb

Sorry about the link to the TomTom software it is unofficial so DON'T buy it I just looked at it again and realised. I am really sorry.

Nah man it is fine it is pretty funny. He should just say this is the link pay me $120 and you can dl it straight away no need to wait for it in the mail LOL

Well on my device which has maps of Aus and the program it adds up to about 100mb so if you have a 1Gb half full it should be fine.

Well I have used Destinator 5 on my IIs and it was so slow that you would be going along the highway and then you take the exit and you would have been of the highway for about 4 minutes and it still said that you were on it so I changed to TomTom 6 and I find it great.

Here is the I-Blue GPS http://cgi.ebay.com.au/i-Blue-PS-73...yZ129259QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I use the I-blue but it is the previous model but I still find it great and the battery just keeps going. I find it has great accuracy and picks the signal up very quickly. I found that TomTom only registers it if it is on COM6 so you just create a new COM port and it works fine.

That is good to know so I should go for the TomTom 6 and this is like 100mb installed. Also are the maps free to update via the net or do i have to pay to dl them. Cause there are so many ppl on ebay selling the software on flash memory

Looking for new phone/pda -(best price, wait for newer, etc)

Hello Everyone:
This site has been extremely informative, and I'm glad to have found it. I'd characterize myself as a pretty sophisticated computer and electronics user but as of yet I haven't made use of any sim card based phones/networks (I reside in the USA). I have also restrained myself from PDA's as I'm wired down in my life too much already. However, now that I'm running to meetings left and right, traveling a lot more, etc, I think I'm ready to finally leave the laptop at the hotel/dorm/room and have good functionality at my fingertips. Thanks to my educational institution I will be going abroad 3-4x in the next year or so. As you can see this builds up to what you guys probably love as much as me: decison time about what to get!
I like the Siemens X56 but am worried about the whole unlocking bit given some of the concerns with Radio 4.20, etc. Also then I just saw a post about a 64mb version (Not sure, but tmobile here offers a 32mb ROM, 32mb RAM version, is that the same or do you guys just look at ROM in the rating?). So with a few of these things here is my buying situation:
2 Weeks until I depart to London to study at LSE
-Will cancel existing plan/ditch phone (Ericsson T60D)
-Want to have unlocked and feature rich PDA/phone so I can use the prepaid SIM cards there
Will Return in Fall
-Would like to at that time use tmobile ($40plan)
-Will use PDA/phone to dial into a dialup connection in my dorm room for connectivity
Spring 04
-Participating in [email protected]
-Will do the same as London
Background Factors
-T-Mobile wants the service active for 90 days before unlocking
-T-Mobile has seasonality (where you keep open account but don't use it)
-Unable to take existing cell number with me (xingular) - damn U.S.!
-Would still like to keep existing number
-Looking for Windows CE based device (ala outlook integration, excel) that will last me until at least 2006.
So... what do I do?? I found a deal at amazon.com for $300 for the SX56 but then all the tmobile restrictions will haunt me. Reading this site it seems that I'm better off purchasing a SX56 elsewhere and unlocking, upgrading it to use abroad. I'm hoping to keep the price ~300USD. Also what's w/ the 4096colors, is there something on the market or just about to hit the market that I should wait for?
Any help would be appreciated, especially regarding upcoming products, and dealers/vendors that I can purchase from ASAP at good price.
Thanks for any and all help! I hope I didn't miss anything in the forum before reposting something by accident, if so I apologize!
patrick
I would make a huge recommendation for Dovid at On The Go Solutions. http://www.otgsolutions.com
He provides great service and the price is just $300 if you sign up for voice & data with him. Tell him I sent you. (No, I don't get any sort of kickback, but he usually tosses in a freebie for my referrals, such as a car cord.)
When to buy? Well, there's always another great device just around the corner. As a highly mobile professional, I can tell you that the time to see the ROI on having this device and service was maybe a month or two. It really does save me that much time, not to mention aggravation, plus provides entertainment.

is digitv hackable?

Hi, im interested in buying this device on handset only , but only want to have this for the digital tv capability, is there any way of hacking so you can receive this for free, because i dont want to open up a new contract with virgin ... and i dont want to get pay and goand pay a fiver a month for it either..
anyone know the score on this??
Not enough people have the phonefor the hackers to be interested yet. Which is why we have no free unlock yet either.
BBC 1 is free on the phone for the foreseeable future.
TV is a bit crap though, DAB radio is much better and it is a decent smartphone for very little money.
been looking into this myself, trying to find where the tv subscription details are stored, but not much luck, managed to find the tv channel and radio station tiny images for the program, and changed channel 4 shortcuts to just the channel 4 logo, easiest way i found to do the tv for free on payg is using any old virgin sim cards (got about 4 a while back when they were free thru virgin site, so worth keeping ur eyes peeled for them, and when ur subscription runs out, chnange the sim to the other one, activate subscription for tv then swap back again, and then that will give u another 90 days free as it will be the first time its been registered for tv services, that will give u thirty days then swap again when that month subscription runs out, then again for another thirty then again for another thirty to the full 90, then try and get hold of another, and repeat again, meaning u will only need a sim every three months, the spare sim fits perfectly inside the back cover of phone too so can be left in there until needed, that will work until virgin gives the first ninety days for free, must be someway to hack into where it is stored properly tho.
Unlock Lobster
Heres the trick
Buy the phone
Get a FREE sim card from Virgin
Put £30 Credit on (You get £25 free when you buy the phone)
Call 789 and ask for unlock code
Get letter in 5 days time with unlock code
Tried and tested 3 times :-D
Also, the free sim cards definatly re-activate the 90 day TV Trial :-D
Just a quick one in regards to this post.
Another option is to call customer services and let them know you have been having problems with the signal and havent really had chance to test it 9/10 they will give u another month free. (which i have done)
or could try and complain that they are shutting down the service and you bought the phone for the tv (i bought it for the radio and its great) and you feel let down having paid out for the phone and fingers crossed you might get it free until the tv packs in.(which i will try soon)
Phew appologies for the bad grammer but speed typing at work
ciou

Should I buy

Ok so I have been wanting to buy this phone since launch. My HD2 works fine with WP Rom but USB is faulty so cannot sync or charge. External charger for battery required.
Anyway, the price of sim free titan is now £285. I really want to buy this but worried about these issues:
1. WiFi cellular network allocation
2. Muffled voice during call
3. Antenna issue
4. If new and better phone launched at end of year.
what shall I do? Buy now or wait?
Thank you!
1. I had problems with wifi in the past, but since the last update it improved a lot in my opinion
2. The voice quality is not the best on this phone, but it isn't horrible either.
3. Never had any issues. When Im in college or at the cinema I have some signal loss, but so do m friends
4. There will always be a better phone
Hope you find this useful!

I am so jealous that your SIM free is just £285. I got it in November last year and paid £480!
I would say it's a steal at that price. There will be only one top-notch, well two, handsets till Oct this year - Titan 2 and Nokia Lumia 900. They won't be here till May-June.
Titan can be upgraded to Apollo. My plan is sell Titan in Oct and use that money to invest in a native Apollo handset instead of Titan2/Lumia900. I think you've got to get it and enjoy it. Then go for the next phone! There will be a better phone every 3 months. If you wait for it, you will never dive into the enjoyment
Nothing wrong with this handset at least not the UK ones. Get it from Carphone Warehouse if you can. The problems you are reading about are generally in the US handsets especially the AT&T ones.
Thanks mate for your reply
Yes the handset is now 299.99 plus 5% quidco bringing it to 285.00. I posted the deal here http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/htc-titan-windows-phone-sim-free-285-after-quidco-expansys-1186159
Did you buy your handset sim free? I always do and dont do contracts. Am on simplicity deal for years. I bought my hd2 for £500 on launch day. Am tempted to buy Titan now.
Also are you positive Titan 2 will launch in UK? Where did you hear that? I thought it was for AT&T only.
PS ignore the rant i had with one guy in the HUKD thread

Haha, I think Titan is good for UK as Titan 2 comes with LTE in the USA. However, the rumour has it that it will follow the Nokia Lumia 900 (which comes here in May). But instead of LTE version UK will get the 3.5G version - which still I don't think any other network but O2 will benefit from here in the UK. So both the new phones are pretty pointless for the UK. Plus Titan 2 comes with a plastic back to make up the heavy weight of the 16 MP camera. I got Titan only because it felt sturdy. I am sure Titan 2 with plastic won't be the same thing to hold! I already have issues with 3G in the UK, I don't think 3.5G (Dont know the technical word they used) will help my battery or usage!
Yes always best sim free, The UK handsets seem to be more stable than the AT&T, Bought mine second hand and it had to go for repair at HTC but probably because the previous owner dropped it lol, Not suffered from any Voice problems or any Wi Fi issues and to be honest at that price you can't really go wrong, Antenna is all down to good contacts on the rear casing and never had any problems, As mentioned by Drupad you will have the option of the Apollo Update later in the year which should be interesting.
Is it written anywhere that the Titan will be upgradeable to Apollo? Any link?
Also if new handsets or native Apollo handsets will be out at the end of the year, would it be worth it to buy Titan now if I am only going to get 6-8 months use out of it before a better phone comes out?
What I DO know is I want a 4.7" screen and i guess there is no promise that the new handsets will be around 4.7" screen wise.
My final question is the HD7's 16gb sd card could be exchanged for a 32gb card with careful surgery Can this be done to the Titan too?
My only problem with Titan is : there is no Custon Rom or Interop-Unlock Yet.
but in the future it will be out.
you wont regret it, jut buy it.
I am SO close to buying it. Can do it in 10 seconds. I bet I buy it and one week later leaks of better handsets get out.
I ended up buying it and love the phone although family angry with me saying I spent a lot of money on a brand new phone and my voice sounds muffled
Temptation got the better of you then lol, Good choice, Great phone, not had any problems with voice being muffled, Only suggestion is to move the mic nearer to ya mouth, Looks as though we may not be getting the full Apollo going by the latest posts on ere but we should definitely get Tango and hopefully some form of update which maybe a form of Apollo, Its all guessing at the moment, Enjoy your Titan as most of us are doing for now, There will always be a better newer handset on the Horizon.

No Note i717 Rom which caters to tablet carrier Plan: DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY

Ok let me start off by saying I have done extensive digging and still have not found any script or development out there pertaining to using this phone or any other as a tablet account from your provider. In my case for example I am using a tablet sim account with Telus Canada (2 month with no overage charges and 5 dollars a month !!!!!!! Promotion ends early Dec. When you sign up you get 2 months.) The sales reps at the locations for Telus are instructed to gear you into a regular telephone plan which are practically 10-20 times that without unlimited!!! You may be asking well what about SMS / Phone functionality. But I am sure most of you know that we can use SIP with decent codecs with our phone. Here in Canada I found a provider who provides unlimited SMS with the DID, SIP account.
Voila 5 dollar plan. Full LTE speeds in metro locations ( here in Burnaby BC I am getting up to 45 Mbps D and 15 Mbps U !!! Serious speeds with no data cap. !!! Having just moved here we haven't even needed more than the portable hotspot for the entire last month. !!! Crazy Huh:cyclops:... Well at least it was for me having just finished moving across Canada from Ontario in a 16 foot moving van toeing my car full of stuff behind that. Using the plan with great coverage and speeds everywhere except Banff Alberta in the mountains...
------------- ------------- -------- BUT ------------ -------------- ------------
there is one HUGE catch to this, if you use the default APN settings for Telus (sp.telus.com):crying::crying: DANGER DANGER instead of (isp.telus.com) that one character being the only difference and you are considered a mobile PHONE not TABLET, you will be charged 1 dollar a megabyte, a dollar for a text and like 50 cents a minute phone calls!!!! This is especially bothersome when you flash a new rom as the phone resets the entire apn config to whatever the dev. put there most of the time isp.telus.com has been there (blackstar rom, paranoid android, and other builds of JB and ICS) BUT sp.telus.com is selected and the isp on toggled off. When you install most roms you want your sim in for first boot and it's a real pain ripping it out each time as well doesn't matter anyways because if you have your apps in the phone it could cost you 28 dollars if it auto updated google chrome for example !! Also you want to be able to log in on first boot. Many times I have found a back door by opening the status bar and hitting one of the options to get me into settings and backing out to the full settings menu during setup. This is also a pain because of the high chance of crashing parts of the setup background services etc. AFTER ALL many developers are starting to recommend a sitting period of 10-15 min. ... "Ya but I wish I didn't have to sweat each time" ... I know very little is being transmitted but I don't even want to touch that other config... I also wish I couldn't even see my "phone number" or receive a call on it... All through sms compatible sip. Everything else is dead to me (joke). But honestly with LTE speeds like that a good voip provider makes it next to PSTN quality, perhaps even better with some codecs.
On 1 occasion i forgot while we were traveling the open road of the prairies, this resulted in over 200 dollars there goes any deal I had.
However the telus reps were happy to honer the plan and didn't seem to understand at the customer service counter how it got there, being that I have a shield right now (unlimited for a couple months,) well lets just say im back to 5 dollars for a great plan.
In the future however how can I guarantee I don't do this again!?! almost to risky when the shields go down... but honestly would be worth a shot if someone could right a CLEAN script which toggles apn settings in TWRP or CWM recovery. (I would prefer TWRP (seems way faster))...
However one thing that always stands out in mind is someone with the skills (im definitly not included wouldn't even know where to start!!) could design a simple rom with apn settings better VOIP integration (removing complete access to the mobile radio for anything of than data) ie, phone and sms are totally offline. Just mobile data or Wifi or airplane mode nothing else. This way the tablet plan which will happily stay under 50 dollars a month for serious LTE speeds in Canada and I would be a very happy camper.
Cheers to anyone who can figure it out and I would be happy to help out for some kind of legit exchange...
Thank you for your time.

No...
They lack the modem. Others have tried and ended up with bricks.
There's a reason people are selling these significantly cheaper.
If they could be flashed and magicked into working devices - people would do that and sell them for more money.
Common sense guide you.....
Who in 2015 actually uses phone calls and SMS when you have what's app, Skype etc? Might as well buy a demo unit for significantly cheaper

Because you don't walk around with wifi? Do you live under a rock or wut...?
We've got wifi pretty much everywhere where I live , and for those who don't you can carry a cheap wifi dongle thing. Or you living under a rock?

Lmao you have free WiFi whenever you're on the move? Dam.. You high tech man. Rest of us using cellular and 4g lte must be living under a rock...
Yep, get out from under your rock and get with the times, phone and SMS are outdated now. With the money you save from buying a demo unit (£300) it will cost a mere fraction of that to buy wireless dongle and a cellular SIM with data plan, I remember T-mobile had a deal where you could buy a SIM for £20 and get free data for a whole year. Not sure if they stil do it, but I'm sure there are loads of other bargains around. If you want to go ahead and waste your money buying a phone though, be my guest.

Yep because walking around with a wireless dongle, with a charger because battery life on them is never stellar + your phone is just so much more convenient a solution than buying 1 device where it all just works.
Jumping through hoops to save money and end up with a solution that actually offers less functionality is such a practical solution.
As for phones being outdated now, I guess that's why they sold hundreds of millions of them each year globally, because they're an outdated concept.
The battery on them is fine if you buy a good quality one, you can call it "jumping through hoops", but if you really want to spend £300 more just to avoid carrying another thing, which you can just slip into your backpack or suitcase or whatever, then you have more money than sense.
Millions of phones are sold because people don't see a new smartphone and go "oh wow, look how well it makes calls and does texting!" They're impressed by the screen, the specs etc. which could all be had in a demo unit for much less.
If those millions knew they could get live demo units for two thirds less, with identical specs except for cellular, and they were savvy enough to know how to carry external wifi and download free phone apps, then I'm sure not all those millions would've have bought the phones. Common sense guide you...
