How to get Japanese fonts working on English ROM? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Software Upgradin

Here is the situation: I am one of these sorry Softbank users who have to resort to all sort of tricks to get their TyTn working in English using the Softback network. I flashed a WWE ROM and have now all services, including MMS properly working. Naturally the WWE ROM does not include Japanese fonts, and whenever you receive an e-mail in Japanese or want to browse a Japanese website you see only gibberish.
I tried to solve the problem with installing Askul's "LetsJapanNo5" cab that comes with Japanese fonts.
http://asukal.seesaa.net/article/6912738.html
It works for IE and e-mail, but unfortunately this cab is somewhat mixing up with tje English fonts: Suddenly certain WM 5.0 parts are displayed in Japanese as well, such as the "calendar" function in "Today", and there is suddenly an annoying mixture between English WM 5 fonts and Japanese fonts.
I then tried "CE-Star for WM5" advertised as "the first and only true Chinese/Japanese enabler software suite for Windows Mobile 5.0 based Smartphone."
http://microsoft.handango.com/Platf...&productType=2&platformId=11&productId=193804
After installing it, the same happens like with Askul's Japan cab. Japanese fonts become available for IE and e-mails, but again certain WM functions, like the "Calendar" in "Today" are displayed in Japanese and cannot be changed to English, also there is an annoying mixture between English and Chinese/Japanese fonts. I can only warn to use "CE-Star" from Mobem, because you cannot de-install it, and I had to hard-reset to get rid of the *****.
Any idea how to get Japanese/Asian fonts working? So that they can be selected for IE browsing like in Windows XP without messing up the entire WM installation?

there are samples of some free or free-ish... fonts and links to the sites where you can download those fonts.
if you have a pc with japanese win xp, you can copy msgothic out of c:\windows...

chainbolt,
i strongly recommend this font called Meiryo from Windows Vista. it works better with the clear type setting than any other japanese fonts. you can download it from here .
unarchive the lzh file and you will get the font file meiryo.ttc. just copy that into your \windows folder and make the registry changes as follows.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\FontLink\SystemLink\
there are four fonts Arial/Courier New/Tahoma/Times New Roman in this. change the font link of these all four to \Windows\meiryo.ttc,Meiryo and that's it.
btw, i use ce-star v28 and it works fine for me although it does have some glitches as you mentioned. it does have the uninstall capability though. it should be too late for you now but you can unistall it by Start->Programs->CE-Star->Uninstall.

Thanks a lot. I could smell already that I have to change some registry settings as well, not just copying the font into the Windows folder. Interesting that with ce-star. Do you also get "Date/Time" and the "Calendar" in Japanese?

Harry, thanks again. I have done all this, but no success, I can neither select a Japanese font for IE (in the option menue) nor can I read Japanese e-mail. It actually did not change anything. I of course made a soft re-set after changing the registry. Do I miss something?

hehehe, I found a way how to do it:
The new font has actually to be installed into Windows/fonts/
as described here here:
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=24&p=1353&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
I can now open and read Japanese websites, but still Japanese e-mail comes in "blocks".

Thanks for that. That seems to be a very detailed description. My Japanese is not good enough, but I will ask the GF.

Locales and Date/Time settings
From my understanding of Asian languages on PPCs (only 2003SE, but I assume WM5 will be similar), the actual installation of the fonts as descibed allows Japanese to be displayed. The settings for Today (in fact, all regionalised date/time settings), are set in Regional Settings [Start -> Settings -> System -> Regional Settings]. If, after you've installed the Japanese enabler, such as CE Star, you'll probably notice that Japanese has been set in Regional Settings. If you change this back to English [and your appropriate locale, eg. English (Australia)], then, after a soft reset, date/time/Today settings should be in English again.
Note that these settings also affect the ability to restore from a backup using ActiveSync. The device to which a backup file is to be restored must first have the same locale set (in Regional Settings, or the registry) as that recorded in the backup file at the time of the backup.
This is set in the registry at HKLM\nls\DefaultLCID
-> For example, 0x404 (1028) is for Chinese (Taiwan)
It's also set in HKLM\nls\overrides\LCID
This may have changed in WM5.
Note that there are other settings in there which allow manual setting of Date/Time settings. For example, in HKLM\nls\overrides\SLDte, the System Long Date format can be set. I have manually set this to "dddd yyyy'年'MM'月'dd'日'". Instead of changing the Locale, you may instead manually set your date settings here.

i have installed ATOK for Pocket PC for the japanese ime.
note that it's not that easy to install this and you need to read this page qtotter mentioned in the later post for not having side effect problems. if you just install it, you'll be screwed.

that's bizarre. i have it installed in the \windows folder and not in the \windows\fonts.
you also need to check your regional settings (start->settings->system->regional settings) and change Region to Japan when you want the full japanese display capability, but this requires changing the nls. just adding a japanese font is not good enough. the only way to install the japanese nls file is either installing ce-star or Asukal's cab. you can change the date and time formats to english even japan is set for the region.

It's definitely in the "fonts" folder, as described in the "how to" I linked. It works for IE browsing, but not for e-mails.
I can't set in "regional settings" to Japan, because such setting does not exist in my WM 5.0 installation (WWE ROM 1.35).
I give CE Star now a second try.

well, burning a rom is NOT like installing an os as win xp... you do not choose the default region/language when you burn a rom. it just "burns" something like a fixed disk image onto the flash memory.
you can change settings including region/language on os, which means you do the same every time you do hard reset.

you can't set it to japan as you don't have the nls you need. if you are giving ce-star another try, i recommend that you turn off everything other than japanese in the options for installation if you don't need any chinese. when that is successful, you will have japan for the regional settings option.

True Type Fonts for the PPC are the same as for Windows machinese - any *.ttf file should work. It shouldn't matter where the physical font file is located, but settings in the registry will dictate whether the font works on the PPC system or not (both in terms of [a] System Fonts for Today, and Application displays, and availability of fonts to applicaions such as Pocket Word).
Firstly, download a font file (*.ttf) that contains your Japanese glyphs, and put it on your PPC (eg. in the \Windows folder, or elsewhere, such as \Storage\Fonts). Secondly, use a program such as InFont (http://www.insoftwarehouse.com/download/infont/xe.php?l=en), or FontOnStorage (http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=726) to set up your fonts to be loaded when the device starts.
Then, using a program such as TillanoSoft PocketTweak (http://tillanosoft.com/ce/ptweak.html) - (see the Fonts tab), set the System Fonts (there are three of them - System Font, MenuBar font and Pop-Up font - this may be different on WM5) to a font that contains the glyphs you require - in your case, Japanese.
Note that this can all be done without an nls file for Japanese, or any other language for that matter, and avoids the use of CE Star, or the Japanese CAB (but does require other tools such as the Font Manager, or FontOnStorate).
This approach will also avoid any issues with English regional settings, such as Date Time formats, and phone number formats, from being changed.

I re-stalled CEStar, got the fonts, and now also the regional settings (for Asian countries). I re-set to US, the Chinese characters disappeared in the "Calender", and everything is now working. I can open Japanese websites and e-mails.

If I get some time in the next few weeks (50% chance), I will see if I can repackage some of Asukal's original CAB files to avoid requiring post-installation patches and to reduce the number of separate cab files (which would also reduce memory space required).
....if Asukal is OK with this...
Could you repack LetsJapanNo5 & IME31J_QVGA together?
Also, anybody have problems with MMSLite on WM6 ROMs?
PLS DONT INSTAL or USE on Xo1H <Toshiba Device>
this is not compatible for Toshiba or any other device with WM6.

does this work with WM6? It would be great to have an English interface for the Japanese Rom I installed. It would just be much easier than following the guide to installing Jap. keyboard, language, mail, softbank settings, etc etc for the English version of WM6.
Asukal,
I tried Lets Japan with english WM6,
succesfully installed and working.
There is only one issue that I found after
installing Lets Japan on WM6, I can't sync my
Windows Live account via wifi anymore.
But after I remove Lets Japan,
my Windows Live can then sync again via
wifi.
The error stated that I don't have
access plan from my provider.
Wherein I think windows live can use
both data and wifi connection, or whichever
is available.
Is it because of the localization or are there
any reg mod needed to make it work and
have my windows live sync via wifi ?
Does anyone in here also encountered this issue.
Thanks
well, i never did relay back my experience with the english MUI setup, but i was able to successfully install it. actually, at first, darkside6 didn't work for me immediately after installing the cab. rather, what i had to do (as one post in the previous thread tipped me off) was to find the extracted individual cabs in the temporary files folder and install them separately. after that and a soft reset, things seemed to be installed fine. most menus were changed to english (with the exception of the menus in the Softbank mail program and some drop-down menus, and shortcuts in settings).
one thing i wasn't sure about though- well, actually two. first, for the clock. i changed it so it shows a 12 hour clock instead of a 24 hour clock... but there is no AM or PM following the time? is that how it displays on native english roms? second, i've heard some people say that to get rid of the english menus and revert back to japanese, you have to do a hard reset. does this mean that it's safe to uninstall the programs listed in the installed programs list related to the MUI? i'm not a fan of hardresetting, and would like to avoid screwing up my quite functional setup if it's not necessary. but if its just taking up unnecessary space...

Hello Asukal! I come to you again for help!
There are two things that I still have problems with while making English ROM Japanese friendly:
1º)I have Japanese I/O enabled, with "Roma/Kana" SIP by default (via SIP change of Sheult). But when I open a program, always "hiragana" write is default one, and I need to change to "romanji" (normal English input); but no I idea how to do it (><)
That isn't put "Keyboard" SIP for english input; it's Japanese input, but romanji by default. I hope I explain myself.
2º)[less important] Is there any way to make Pocket IE to work with Yahoo! Keitai (brose the Web pages of Yahoo! Keitai)
Thanks!
PD: After read this thread, I have two small questions (really less important; just curious):
a)LetsJapanNo6.zip: New CAB for make Softbank Hermes from JP to English without flash I suppose, no?
a1)Want does exactly do the Treo version?
b)You translate Softbank mail app to English, but only works in original ROMs because of certificates?
And the last one ... Any advance in MMS after MMS Lite? Last times I only checked WM6 Forum, and I think I lose many news form this forum.
Really thanks for all!!

I didn't realize that could be the problem Thanks.

Hello!
Two things:
-About IME, I know what you told me. What I asked you is different. It's have the Roma/Kana option by default (or any that let you know Japanese, instead of "Keyboard"). But you know it have 5 options (Hiragana, 2 Katakana and 2 Romanjis). By default is always Hiragana. I want to change to Romanji.
-About "@Lets Japan No6 ", thah makes your device a Japanese one (fonts+japanese imput), of a softbank one?
Bye!

can't get Scandinavian_version_x.cab to work.

Hey.
So i downloaded this and installed on touch X.
But it wont work. I do not get any Scandinavian keyboard :/
Anyone got this to work successfully? If so please tell me how
Hargibi
I'm just adding my voice. I hope someone can help us with this.
Thanks mate..
Gullum any change you got any idea how to get this to work ?
I have the same problem, even tried to edit the registry (a bit too much), so now it doesn't even work in english ;-)
I will post how I solved it to get swedish to work later today, when I get to my PC.
Copy the attached files, except the .reg file to the windows folder.
Import the .reg file.
Change the registry key HKLM/Software/HTC/ezsip/LibraryCount to 16 (dec)
Soft-reset to be on the safe side and then you can choose Swedish language in the Touch Keyboard settings.
For other languages you have to figure out what files to copy and change the registry settings.
Good luck to you!
Great! Thank you!
Does anyone have the norwegian files?

the Norwegian files are inside the scandinavian cab on gullim.4shared.com
Yes, you're right.
So there is probably only a reg setting left to get this working. Norwegian is currently not showing in the list of available languages in the touch keyboard settings.
can you help me with the portuguese language?!?!?!
Hei. The files in Gollums scandinavianX.cab is different than the swedishfiles.zip. How du I take out the norwegian files and the reg.file? Can anyone do that and make a zip of it like the Swedish files? We norwegians would thank you!
Take a look
Hey, I just posted a guide for Norwegian language here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=350215
"Burde virke bra"
I can't seem to get this to work. For some reason, norwegian is not a choice in the languages dropdown menu. I have modified the LibraryCount to 16 (dec), which increased the amount of available languages, but norwegian is not one of them.
Have anyone got this to work?
Re
1.
Some keypad installers leaves a string called "AvailableLanguages"(Sorry if I misspell Available).
Where you can check if the language code for Norway is in fact there.
2.
Maybe you got more languages than 16, try to increase the number.
3.
But it sounds more like you need to get another cab installer for the keypad and try again.
Hope it helps!

help:chinese support cab for wm6

I like cloudyfa's rom.
but no chinese virson.
can anyboy give a chinese support cab?
I used many cab,but have the same problem text wrap.
Better Chinese fonts for Hong Kong region !!!
Hey~~~ , It supports Hong Kong Characters like 咁, 嘅, 喺?.....
Try the full-screen free handwriting input method AND 3 writing-boxes Chinese input (THANKS YOUZII FROM 818EVO version 8en)
( Sorry~~~ only with 1. Full screen handwriting, 2. Tri-writing input box, 3. ChangJie and 4.JuYin input methods.
WITHOUT Pinyin and Quick in this installation, for more, PLEASE hide the 3.ChangJie and 4.JuYin input selection unless you really need them as if you use those two, the word suggestion function from keyboard will be lost until your next reset ......
1. download the file from the following link,
http://v-dog.net/XDA/Norar.zip
2. extract the files " NOrar.zip" 3 files will be seen, they are mingliu.ttc, fontlink.reg and EVO-CHIME.cab,
3. copy the mingliu.ttc ( more than 8MB, well.... much memory now or you can use sunfon.ac3 with 1.8MB, but uglified {I like this word too} small Chinese fonts) the into windows folder,
4. import the fontlink.reg into device ( in ShadoW, just double tap the .reg file, too easy man~~),
5. install EVO-CHIME.cab,
6. soft reset,
or, go for iiiox's / beer2nd for very nice method and further support other Asian input methods like PinYin.....
THX much for iiiox , and sure, Thanks very much to beer2nd too....

Help!!About the 6.5 chinese中文 for t4242

anybody know which 6.5 Rom can show chinese中文 in touch flo?because some chinese word in touch flo and phone skin can not show it
p.s my english is not very well..
Hello, Chankafai, 你好
This reply maybe too late and probably you have already figured out how to do this.
For anybody else having problems on showing Chinese character in m2d or elsewhere on a wwe ROM, herecs howto:1
First you need to install a Chinese font file to show Chinese characters. For example: sunglobe.ttf, copy it to Windows folder.
Second, install Chinese wince.nls, soft reset and change the regional settings in start >> settings >> system to let the system to set Chinese as default code, show correct time, date, and currency format etc.
Third, need to manually adjust registry subkey .\HKLM\software\Microsoft\fontlink\systemlink\, make sure all strings read as: \Windows\sunglobe.ttf, UniSun. and then soft reset, and your are done.
Font, wincenls.cab and other instructions can be found here: http://sakajati.com
Hi,
Do you have a good chinese/japanese IME to recommend for WM?
Many IMEs have problem on newer WM build.
If you use both Chinese and Japanese, maybe CE-Star is the best choice. It is not finger friendly, but it has a good word recognizing IME. CE-Star is not freeware, but after expired the trial period all other IME still works except the word recognizer. The official version can not work with newer OS builds. But somebody dismantled it into parts, and then allways work. My Kaiser phone comes with the original licensed one, but I have to use the dimantled one after I started to use custom ROMs.
Another good word recognizing IME is called HawonPen (汉王笔马兰花), it also works with WM65 or WM651, it is set as default IME after install.
Also there is a good fiinger friendly IME called touchpal, but its English version is not freeware.
Abovementioned are all for Non-Chinese ROMs. If you are using a Chinese ROM, then you have plenty of choices, and all of them are freeware, works better than the HTC EZinput. In my personal opinion, I prefer the A4&Hawon combination comes with my China Unicom stock ROM.
You can also take a look at this link: http://www.studiokuma.com/wm/?section=support Best thing about this: the instruction is in Chinese so you should do fine.
I haven't tried it on WM6.5 but seems to work for most WM6.1 ROM or before.
Good luck!

[Q] Lenovo ET960 ROM hack-Chinese to English Conversion?

Dear all,
As I write I have a Lenovo ET960 sitting on my desk, which is lying there for the last 2 weeks as I am unable to figure out how to change its menu language from Chinese to English. My uncle who was never able to use it gave it to me after all these years. It has WM2003SE (I think!), although I am sure the experts here will know all about it. I am very keen on fixing this issue, the trouble is I am novice in this area.
I have done some background research, but I still need some help from all you guys here. I have the the following requests.
1) I understand that there is no way to change the language of this phone as the OS is hard-coded in the Chinese ROM. One way is to hack this Chinese ROM and change it to English using a HEX-editor. An alternate way would be to use a third-party software to change the language, however I could not find one for WM2003. Once I hack the ROM and make the necessary changes, I should, in principle be able to install an upgrade to WM2003 (which I also do not have with me!).
To hack the Chinese ROM in ET960 and solve this issue I would need to know two things:
(a) Where to locate the ROM in this pocket PC using my desktop PC (via a USB cable connection)?
(b) I need a reference ET960 ROM (ET980 ROM may also work!) in English to compare the values to change accordingly.
(c) Finally, an upgrade to WM2003/WM2003SE (the firmware upgrade d/l link) and the upgrade method.
Now the trouble is I have never flashed a ROM before, so I need to know the steps. In addition I would also need to know the steps to the upgrade process.
I have managed to download the following softwares/tools which I think will help in the process, but I dont want to start the process until I get some feedback from you guys here.
(1)The lenovo.zip file _ftp: / / ftp.roverbook.com / RoverPC /Lenovo_ET960/
and the (2) ET960update.exe from gsmforum.ru, which can be used as an update tool for both Lenevo ET960 and ET980. I have also managed to download the upgrade instructions, but only in Chinese!. This is where my research ends. Now I request you guys to help me with the missing links to convert my ppc into English.
Thanks,
Jay
This Thai review (use Google Chrome and translate it to English) states the following:
Languages: Support English, Simplified Chinese, Tranditional Chinese Input but can not display Traditional Chinese character.
The screenshots also show the phone is using English. It might be as simple as changing the system language in your MUI settings (in the registry: HKLM>MUI and change SysLang to 1033 Dec/0409 Hex...HKCU>MUI and change CurLang to 1033 Dec/0409 Hex).
Hi rete, Thanks for the reply. I have never edited the registry in a pda. Is there a special tool that I have to use for editing the registry? The ET960 I have with me has a interface similar to this _http:/ / video.pomoho.com/ent/762870.
As everything is in Chinese, I am unable to make head or tail of anything. Please guide me if possible. Cheers, Jay
I am getting back to my ET960 issue after a gap. I really want to make this device (which has a great design) usable, for which I will need to convert the user interface to English.
Rete, I made the registry changes you suggested but nothing changed. So I will need to to find an alternate solution.
The ET960 has WM2003SE (ROM version: S603 051229 which is not WWE). It displays all the system folders as well as some of the installed applications UIs in English. But most of it is in Chinese.
I installed an English localization software (Paragon Inc, LEng for WM6) which translated my ET960s interface completely to English. But, the ActiveSync stopped working and the system folders could not be accessed after the installation of LEng. This tells me that if I can replace the *.mui files from CHS to ENG in the ROM, I will get an English interface.
But the trouble is that I am new to all this and do not know where to start. So I request for some guidance.
The other option to make the device usable is to boot Android from a microSD card, but I could not find an Android version anywhere from my ET960 (which has similar hardware to MDA compact & Yakumo Omikron). Please advice.
