SD CARD - FAT16/32 - Cluster Size - Performace numbers - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam Accessories

Just wanted to share some simple performance figures I pulled on my TyTn's Storage Card
Device: TyTn (HERM200), ROM 3.54.253.3
OS: Windows Mobile 6, CE OS 5.2.1437 (Build 17944.0.3.1)
Storage Card: 2 GB SanDisk ultra II Micro SD card
Testing Tool: SKTools 3.1.9
Notes:
-Before testing I used SKTools to optimize for performance. this changes cache setting and I imagine this has an effect on test results.
-I have no idea how SKTools mesure performance, what mis of large/small files.
-Each filesystem format was only tested once. I tried running it a couple of times for one of the formats, and noticed a small difference.
-All results is without backup FAT, to get the fastest performance.
-First two bars in the graph is FAT16, the rest FAT32
-The number after FAT16/FAT32 referes to the cluster size, ex. FAT32-16 has Cluster size set to 16384
-WRITE SPEED IS MULTIPLIED BY 10 TO MAKE IT FIT IN ONE GRAPH
Graph

Uruk Droid - SD card results thread

A lot of weird issues that popup while running Uruk Droid from the SD card may actually be the result of the card itself not being able to handle the constant read/write. Even if the card is labeled a class 10 you may get worse performance than the stock. I know, I used a class 10 for a week or two and it was essentially unusable, so I moved Uruk to the internal storage.
Use this thread to post your experiences and test speeds for the various SD cards. If you can, use $auron's method for some uniform baseline, but a general description of the experience is important because some of the issues don't seem to be captured by a speed test. Of course, please list the card's make and class as well as size.
Please use $auron's method in post 3 for testing.

I've created script with some io tests (based on bonnie++) - it should check both raw r/w and small files operations. It should be more precise that above script with dd (witch is of course also good - but can be not fully true if some sd cards prefer some specific block sizes)
Since UrukDroid 0.6 this script is installed by default. For older releases you can use this one:
File: UrukDroid-0.5-iobench.tbz2.
Save it with browser directly on Archos to /data/UrukUpdate (not over USB!).
How to run test?
To run the test, connect archos to power supply and run from shell
Code:
su
iobench.sh
Test run looks like this:
Code:
[[email protected] tst]# iobench.sh
Turning on max CPU frequency: 1000000 hz
Performing disk (/data) IO test. Test make take about 1h on slower systems - please connect device to power supply!

Restoring previous cpu setting....
What does tests do?
It creates files with different method (per char, per block, in sequential or random order) - this is throughput part.
Second tests check how fast we can create/access/remove files. More you can read about tool called bonnie++ on Internet.
So called score is just for you - it may be not precise, full precise data are in line below score.
How to report results?
I've tried to get as much data as I can from system level - but it does not give info about class level and brand name of SD card (witch can be different from manufacturer name). So this data must be added by user. My proposal is:
Manufacturer/brand name:
Card size:
Card class:
Card URL:
Filesystem type (/data partition):
Performance feelings:
Performance details:
Click to collapse
In performance details please cut/paste results from iobench.sh output - lines between ---- -----
How to buy cards?
Check graph from second post and try to get card that has possibly best metadata operation with throughput. Thumb rule is not to buy cards that has metadata operations below average - that is below red line.
Scores
I used the dd test and got the following scores:
Lexar 2GB, unclassified: 6,25MB/s
Adata 4GB, class6: 6,25MB/s
Sandisk 8GB, class 2: 6,66MB/s
Sandisk 8GB, class 4: 6,0MB/s (and dead now, so not available for future tests....
Not helping much I quess....
But maybe this helps:
I also tested under Windows with HD Speed from steelbytes, I found the standard block sizes of up to 8KB resulted in horrible, unstable performance. From 256KB up to 1MB performance became much more stable.

Well - after few tests made by people - we will see if overall filling is connected with some test results. Or we need to do other tests - like iozone (witch tries different portion of data sizes during write)

I'll dig up numbers again specifically, but a previous test on the vfat partition rendered results in the mid 6MB/S ballpark if I remember correctly. Kingston is known for being a bit on the slow side of things.

Hmm, same card as cjdalessio but I don't really have the same issues as he does. Our metadata scores are completely different, similar throughput. What does the metadata score signify?

Like I said - score is just for you and it's not "real" benchmark result. I had to made some assumptions (that I've implemented in test - it still needs to be calibrated). While doing metadate test sometimes it runs too quick to be measured - that's why you can see in the last line of result some "+++++". I've substituted this "unmeasured" value with some number for score purpose - it's obviously to small. When you compare this line (with many coma separated number) they are almost identical.
And mediascanner - it's speed depends on how many small files you have and how your directory are "protected" with ".nomedia" lock.

In Uruk 0.6 mediascanner can be disabled - and run on demand (we are testing it now and Solune is changing it's UrukConfig to back it up)
Excellent. Enough work today so I won't try it now but will try this weekend I think (expecting nasty snow the next couple days so may find time sooner.)

I must say that nimrodity test on internal gave me some thinking - i'll test it then since it looks quite promising.
I've change some calculation (so your's "scores" may be not the same as on graph) - but this changes have been also put to iobench.sh (this are mostly fixes since sometimes " " empty chars made calculation wrong).
I've added also in description "filesystem type" since I've assumed it's always ext4 - but some of you switch back to ext3 - so please update this information (i'm talking about filesystem of /data partition).
We need some "bad" sdcard results! So please if you have some cards that feels to work badly/terrible - please test it
Like for now I guess that metadata score/tests has bigger influence on system "smoothness" (and this is what I was able to tell without test anyway) - but we needs some proofs and measure of this - bad card needed

[KERNEL][MOD] Mugetsu v2 > experimental / kernel / patched sqlite3 / sd-ext tools

Mugetsu is a package for Urushi (SE Ray) comprised of:
Custom kernel
Patched libsqlite.so
/sd-ext tools
Even though it's a single package, I've split everything between 3 posts according to the above schematic.
Clicking on each one will take you to its own dedicated section.
I have reserved a last post for instructions on how to port this over to other XPERIA 2011 devices.
Mugetsu is mainly a custom kernel based on FXP's source up until 3/11. The credit of every work prior to this date, as well as providing the wlan source needed to compile wireless modules, belongs to FXP team. I've just tweaked and messed a bit in order to optimize performance, internet speed, battery and memory management, while keeping it as light as possible.
Currently working for:
CyanogenMOD 7 (lastly tested with FXP045)
SEMC 4.0.2.A.0.42 *
MIUI (lastly tested with MIUI 1.10.21)
* wifi is broken since I'm unable to compile wlan modules for stock
Features\Changelog:
Code:
[I]version two[/I]:
- Increased OC support up to 2.0 Ghz.
- [URL="https://market.android.com/details?id=com.skvalex.callrecorder"]Added support for voice calls recording[/URL]. (experimental)
- Further optimizations to Deadline I/O Scheduler.
- Lowmemorykiller.c parameters tuned.
[I]version one[/I]:
- Bumped version to 2.6.32.18
- Overclock support up to 1.6 Ghz
- Tiny RCU (+ optimizations)
- SLQB memory allocator
- Many new CPU freq governors (+ optimizations)
- Many new I/O schedulers (+ optimizations)
- Bumped BFQ to last version
- Support for CPU unaligned access
- Veno TCP Congestion control *
- Stochastic Fair Blue network scheduler *
- Bumped jHash to last version *
- Improved RWSEM algorithm
- Improved CRC32 algorithm
- Disabled swappiness
- Increased Config_HZ
- Increased data transfer rate
- Sysctl and lmk tweaking
- Stripped of unnecessary crap. So you have an idea, stock kernel has 3.2 MB, FXP has 3.0 and this one has 2.6 MB.
* huge internet/market page loading boost
CM version is updated to the latest build so it has wifi, haptic feedback and vibration working.
SEMC has an insecure boot.img so it can be rooted with SuperOneClick and I've also added CWM recovery.
Available modules:
Code:
- TUN
- CIFS
- Powersave governor *
- Performance governor *
- Logcat
* since powersave lowers cpu max frequency to same value as the min frequency and performance the other way around, these just seem kind of irrelevant when you have cpu sliders; however, I've included them as a module for advanced users
For activating a module, run this command on terminal: insmod /system/lib/<module.ko>
You may want to add afterwards a line to a init.d for automatic insmod.
Available governors:
Code:
- Ondemand
- Conservative
- Interactive
- InteractiveX
- Smartass2 *
- Smoothass
- BrazillianWax
- SavagedZen
- MinMax
- Scary
* default
For choosing the governor use CM settings > performance, SetCPU, ROM Toolbox or any other app.
More information: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17131902&postcount=1
Available I/O schedulers:
Code:
- Noop
- BFQ
- CFQ
- Deadline *
- Simple
- VR
- Anticipatory
* default
For choosing the I/O scheduler use No-Frills app or the following command:
echo "scheduler-name" > /sys/block/mmcblk0/queue/scheduler (cat this path for the names)

v1: SEMC 4.2.0.A.0.42 - 414c02bb24712eec04e92d1ec858c9f0 || CM/FXP - c058878d24f90871ee808e18c3f6b8f1 || MIUI - (check in MIUI thread)
v2: removed for giving wifi problems to some people.
Instructions:
Download the package.
[CM7] Copy the package to your microSD card.
Extract boot.img from it.
Boot your phone into fastboot mode: turn off, plug USB cable while holding vol+ (blue light).
Use fastboot tools to flash the kernel: fastboot -i 0xfce flash boot boot.img
Unplug cable, turn on phone.
[CM7] Keep hitting vol- while the phone is booting to get into CWM.
[CM7] Flash the package in CWM (flash zip from sdcard).
[CM7] Reboot.
[CM7-Optional] Read about /sd-ext tools.
I'll try to update it as frequently as I'm able to but don't be expecting much, I don't have much spare time and this is only a hobby for me; I'm not a computer engineer, I do this mainly for myself and to keep the brain sharp and always learning.
If you go back to another kernel (boot.img) you may find yourself without wireless if you're using CM.
In this case, just flash this in CWM, no wipe required: http://www.multiupload.com/LIX7E96BGX
I have patched the libsqlite.so present in /system/lib/ in order to disable the sync feature for a higher write efficiency. So basically this will return more I/O performance while observable gains should be through a faster opening/closing of applications.
Currently working for:
CyanogenMOD 7 (lastly tested with FXP045)
It is already included in the package that you flash on kernel section instructions.
More information: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=903507
My past devices always had ext3 native filesystem (eMMc devices), instead of XPERIA's yaffs2 (MTD devices). I usually upgraded these to ext4, removed journalism and with proper mount flags I have found its I/O performance much better than yaffs2 or anything else.
However, in MTD as far as I know there's no such way to format it to ext4 but there's a way around: move applications, data and dalvik-cache to a partition in microSD card called /sd-ext and have it formatted as ext4. Like for the patched libsqlite.so, a higher I/O performance equals to gains in overall smoothness.
Currently working for:
CyanogenMOD 7 (lastly tested with FXP045) *
* even though it's possible in theory for SEMC ROM I will not describe it here
Unfortunately there seems to be no official support for /sd-ext and CWM recovery on CM doesn't have the option to partition the sdcard so we have to find another way to create the /sd-ext partition and force the mount.
Requirements:
Mugetsu package already flashed through CWM (it has essential binaries)
MicroSD card of, at least, class 6 (higher the class, better the performance)
S2E application by Oleg Krikun which can be downloaded from the market
Terminal application (already included on CM but can be downloaded from the market) or ADB
Make sure to backup your microSD card contents as it will be fully wiped.
Instructions:
Navigate to settings > storage and unmount the microSD.
Open terminal/ADB shell and run these commands:
su (allow superuser access so the symbol turns # if it isn't already)
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
print
Take note of the size of microSD card (in my case is 7937 MB), now remove the existing partitions:
rm 1
[Optional]rm 2 (remove n partitions until when you run the print command you won't have any)
Now we create the partitions. Let's go with a 512 MB /sd-ext and the rest for storage (FAT32). Now you'll need to write that (total space - 512 MB) - in my case 7425:
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 7425
mkpartfs primary ext2 7425 7937
Remember to change these values according to your own microSD card storage capacity; if you mess up, go to point 6 and repeat.
Now, we upgrade ext2 to ext3 and then to ext4, but first, exit parted with:
quit
Now back on to terminal/adb shell, run these commands to force ext3 and ext4 upgrade:
mount -o remount,rw /system
echo "" > /system/etc/mtab
tune2fs -j /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
e2fsck -fpDC0 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
The crucial part now, we need to force the mount of /sd-ext so S2E can recognize it and take it from there:
mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 /sd-ext
After this open S2E and choose to move everything to the microSD card. You may need to enable advanced menu in S2E settings in order to be able to move data (reboot was required in my case); also make sure to enable "mount sd-ext as ext4 without journaling" and "set read buffer". If you run into problems with S2E recognizing the /sd-ext (everything is disabled) you need to mount it with the command above. You can check if it's mounted with the following command: "mount".
This way your applications as well as application data will be moved to /sd-ext, thus improving overall snappiness through a greater I/O performance. If on the opposite, you notice any sluggishness is because your microSD card isn't fast enough (slower than yaffs2). I recommend microSD cards who bench at least 8 MB on write test in the SDtools application.
Every time you plug and enable USB connection you'll also see that the new partition gets mounted and can be accessed.
Given the similarity and common core source between all XPERIA 2011 devices, this kernel can be easily ported to others such as Arc and Neo, as well as the patched libsqlite (it needs to be compiled for each device though) and /sd-ext tools. At least for CM7 it will work, this much I can guarantee.
I could release a version for these other devices but since I don't have one for more objective testing and debugging and I really don't have the time to follow the many threads I'd have to create, it's best if I go at this in another way which I'll now describe.
If you wish to port this to your device, make sure that:
You have a linux distro and you're familiar with it.
You know your way around kernels and android.
You have a device to which you want to port to.
You have time and you're active.
Anyone interested who meet the above criteria can contact me through PM, Google+, Twitter or whatever. I'll build everything you need at first for testing purposes and if it returns satisfying results I'll guide you through the rest in order to set it up. In exchange I only ask for you to keep the name and add a link to the original thread (this one).
hi, can i give you a suggestion? there's a way to improve wifi signal? my lg optimus one is much more better than ray.
Have you an idea?
powerfull kernel!
I successfully install it in _semc_ variant. trying to enter to recovery show many text strings (warnigs or what else) but show menu.
in normal mode all ok. there are many modern governeur variants. wifi just not turned on, say 'error' (not hang or reboot as official fxp))).
all other described features of kernel explode my brain)). I will read next times your links for understanding all features.
knzo, can you embed external cards support into kernel? (OTG) or this hard? as in Doomlords' arc kernel.
Thanks for your work!
Sadly SEMC's version has broken wifi (which can be seen in #2 post).
The reason for this is because:
1. FXP wlan source can compile SEMC modules but they don't work.
2. SEMC wlan source can't compile modules.
From what I gather it seems SEMC sources need to be cleaned but I haven't had the time to take a good look at it, it doesn't seem that easy to do.
Anyway, I'm going to study an Arc version for release, then I can take a look at that.

Hm, he says only support for backup/restore when the really handy thing would be partition sdcard support. If CWM had this option then most steps on post #4 would be redundant. However, it would still need to have its mount forced so S2E can recognise it! But this could also be easily added to the RAMdisk.

Partition question

OK, I have a Gtab with the 11/15 FB build.
I am curious about the partitions. Really, why ? I have worked in Unix for a bunch of years and am a fan of few, large partitions. So why am I choosing 2048 ? Or the max if 4096 ?
If it were a Sun box (which is what i cut my teeth on) I would make the main card (disk) a 12 GB root partition and 4 GB swap.
Do the same rules not apply ? It looks like there are a few different partitions (/system, /data, etc) but my eyes cannot read the terminal emulator all that well.

This may not be 100% correct (& if it's not I'm sure someone will correct me).
Really no comparison between a Sun box & a tablet. Sun would be bigger & better hardware.
The tablet only has a 512M nand chip (that holds most of the os), 512M of ram (to run the os, apps & no dedicated graphics memory), a processor that is designed for low power vs performace & and a emmc...basically a thumb drive( in place of an hdd). On top of that Andoid is really a hydrid os (a linux kernel with a java vm to run apps).
As far as partitions go, here is the structure for the nand chip on MOST of the gTabs:
Partition 2 = BCT = boot Config Table
Partition 3 = PT = Partition Table (this list)
Partition 4 = EBT = Bootloader
Partition 5 = MBT = ?
Partition 6 = BLO = Viewsonic Bird Logo
Partition 7 = MSC = ? inandop.log /possibly inter kernel comm tween part9/10
Partition 8 = OGO = logodata (gTablet logo I believe)
Partition 9 = SOS = recovery kernel
Partition 10 = LNX = kernel
Partition 11 = APP = system(rom)
Partition 12 = CAC = cache
If you look at gtablet.cfg file in any of the nvflash packages you will see these partition definitions, fs types & sizes used by nvflash to create them.
You also have 2 additional partitions on the the 16GB internal sd (emmc):
/data - user apps & settings - only accessible via root access
/sdcard = user & app storage
Don't know why exactly why /data is set @ 2 G . Apps in Android don't have the bloat of desktop/PC apps and are considerably smaller. I can tell you that with 83 apps installed I still have nearly 1G of space left on mine out of the 2G.
For the most part, Android doesn't truly multitask apps like on a desktop. From what I understand, Android has it's own mechanism for freeing memory when needed (swapping). When space is needed, non running apps are terminated but the app is responsible for storing persistent data so that it can be reactivated (assuming the app saves persistent data) when called.
Hope this helps.
Al
Cool, thanks, I boosted it up to 4 GB, does not sound like that will hurt (had to reinstall because it was full- could not tell why)

As to what the various partitions are, I can elaborate a bit more on Al's post above. Try these 2 posts:
SD card partitions
NAND Flash partitions
The Android OS has its distributions (ROMs) divided into those partitions described above for pragmatic reasons which are not hard to figure out--mainly to enable easy upgrades of running distributions; with security being a secondary concern.
There is no reason why you couldn't merge some partitions together. For example, GtabComb-b3.3 merges /cache into /data at system bootup time. If you were willing to lose the protected read-only status of /system, that too could be merged with /cache+/data on the SD card by modifying the init rc files. You could muck around with the system at an even lower level since you have access to the source code. It's really up to you how far you want to go. The kernel doesn't care about the no. of partitions or the filesystems on them, or even where they are.
As for your question about the 2GB size of /data, that's just how VS deemed it to be when they released the gTab and that's the size that's followed by most custom ROMs. You can have a smaller or larger size if you want. I, for example, run 2 different ROMs--VEGAn-Tab 7.1 and GtabComb-b3.3--the former on the internal SD card and the latter on a micro SD card just by loading a different boot partition using CWM. And since my micro SD is just 2GB in size, I've shrunk my /data to 256 MB.

From what I understand, Android has it's own mechanism for freeing memory when needed (swapping).
Click to collapse
None of the currently used kernels swap; and neither does Android. That's why they kill apps when there is no memory.
Explains things very well. Thank you both.

[SOLVED] Memory seemed to be full, but it's actually a lot of free space available

My phone: S2 with CM 12.1 (latest nightly)
Hi,
since 2 days my phone has an odd behaviour.
In the first place I'd tried to take a screenshot. But in the notification only a note appear, that the "screenshot couldn't be captured". It doesn't matter in which app I try to take a screenshot.
The second problem is, when I try to take a picture with the default camera app. It appears, that the app it take the photo, but it doesn't save any.
The third odd behaviour is, that within the gallery app, it show all the picture folders and images within, but not a single thumbnail nor the picture itself in the detail view.
I can't save any (type of) file to the phone memory.
My first thought was, maybe the memory on the internal SD doesn't have enough space. But here it goes really weird. Following statistic by DiskInfo app:
- System (FACTORYFS) 540 MB free (of 1 GB) - sidenote - I had repit(ed) the partions with lanchons script.
- Data (DATAFS) 3,9 GB free (of 6 GB)
- internal SD (UMS) 2,2 GB free (of 7,5 GB)
Things which worked well:
- Text messaging (but I can't receive picture or videos)
- Reading Twitter and see all images (but can't save any of them)
- Browsing with Firefox (but can't download any document or file)
Does anyone have any idea what's going wrong?
I solved the problem.
By using the latest version of lanchons repit script, which seems to repair something.
