ROM update mishap - G4

Hello,
in my infinite stupidy I updated my rom on my G4 QTEK 9100 with faria's WM6 rom without the use of shelltool (found the 5-step guide afterwards :S).
Anyhow, it went wrong and I ended up installing the original ROM again from QTEK (WI_DT_NLD_2180706_106_020710_Ship.exe).
Installing the original rom went well and my device is running again with no problems using the QTEK ROM, so I thought I'd give it another shot using the guide this time around. Only problem is, the shelltool displays my rom as this:
blversion: crossbow
device: wizard
language: wwe
brand: HTC
CID: n/a
ROM: n/a
instead of the correct information from the QTEK ROM I installed, which is a WM5 ROM in Dutch (and which works properly) :S.
My guess is that some part of the faulty installed ROM is lingering somewhere in my device . Does it really matter and can I install the faria rom again using the shell tool (following the steps in the guide offcourse). Or do I have to fix my device properly first (in some way) before I can give it another go?
Any advice is appreciated.
***edit: feel free to move this thread if I misplaced it, didn't really know if I had to post in the upgrade, WM6 or this forum. ***

I am not an expert, but will try to help you a bit. Reading around a guide by Mfrazz, he advises to install the original ROM before using a custom one, this because it might be possible to be some leftovers lurking around, just like you said.
I would do a hard reset then install the original ROM again, test it and if necessary repeat the process until everything is working like it should. Then after that try again the custom ROM you want to install.
This is just my opinion, maybe some of the guys that REALLY know this stuff can come up with something that works better.

I had the original ROM installed before I tried the one from Faria. Afterwards my device didn't boot properly anymore, so I already did a hard-reset before installing the original from QTEK again. So I don't really know where shelltools gets the faulty information from. So your advise doesn't really help, but thx for the help anyways.

G4 upgrade with success

Hi,
I just wanted to share my experience with you, don't know if anyone used this before. I've tried the shell_tool from the Wizard forum. Used a Portuguese rom and upgraded my Prophet G4 (IPL/SLP: 2.15.0001) (O2 XDA German) CID locked with success.
That tool extracts the OS part of the ROM (any ROM i believe) and updates the Prophet with the OS part, keeping the other stuff (SPL, IPL, RADIO, etc) untouched.
Info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293480
Don't know if affects any on Extended Rom (or other stuff) since I didn't installed it. Anyway, I only want to change the OS language, and it worked for me.
Just my 2 cents.
Regards to all.
WARNING!! Please, this post is based on my own experience, don't blame me if it makes your Prophet a brick. I've spend lots of hours searching and gathering info before testing this solution on my own equipment. You should do that first... don't try everything you see before you read a lot...

Change to an official rom or to a cooked one

hello all,
The last days I was reading a lot of posts, in order to get more information about this device and the options that i can have using a cooked rom.
But still have some questions, so please be pacient with me.
I have an 7500 with WM5 original rom portuguese language.
I understood that if I want to upgrade with AP5beta I need first to update the radio and then the SPL ( the SPL version will depend on the cooked rom ).
I will not need to unblock it, because it works with different sims.
Also for what I understood once I use the SPL3.5 I can not use anymore original roms ( or downgrade ). Is this correct?
If I upgrade my 7500 with the original WM6 roms, can I later use cooked rom's?
Does anyone, that have used only original rom's, noticed any difference between WM5 and WM6?
thanks in advance for your help,
and keep doing this good job.
Hi Poppey
Welcome to the forum.
I noted your other post and it seems you are keen to play with your phone.
Sometimes when you do this , things go wrong , occasionally to the exent that it can't be fixed !
Most of the time , the mistakes have been made before, so if you are inexperienced, seek a friend to guide you or look and search on this forum before you do anything rash.
I would sugest first reading the wiki and asking questions showing you have done this first
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Athena
After this I would suggest learning how to backup and restore data , before attempting to install the various program cabs.
When you are comfortable with this learn how to do a hard reset and reinstall your programs/data etc.
Next I would suggest that you find a copy of your original rom just in case you have to revert to it.
Next try an official Rom.
Along the way , I am sure you will make a mistake , but this is how most people learn how to fix their own problems.
By this time you will understand why you still have to use the athena unlocker
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=315831 to install any of the newer cooked roms http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=397518
This should give you hours of enjoyment/frustration and along the way you may even learn the pros and cons of the various roms which , in the end are very subjective and depend on personal preference.
Hope this helps

Hi lakeman,
Thanks for your prompt answer.
Thats exactly what I need, a point of start.
Lets go reading and reading again...

Hi sergiopi,
also thanks for your prompt answer.
Ok, I understand that once I upgrade with a cooked rom based on SPL3.5 I can't go back to original rom's, neither to rom's using SPL1.2
So it means that is a "one go direction".
But what about upgrade to original WM6 and then if I want go to cooked rom's. Is that posible?
Sorry but I don't have this clear after reading your links.
Probably the best to do is going directly to an original rom, but of course if doing that doesn't give me the option of using cooked rom's I must be sure on what direction I must go.
thanks,
No problem. Upgrade your ATHENA to official WM6 and AFTER you can choose to install the Athena WRAPPER and the cooked ROMs!

For me there was a great question mark about the steps to take, so I'll explain them here for :
1. Dump your ROM (if you want to)
2. Install HardSPL 1.15 MFG
3. CID & Security Unlock
4. Flash a new ROM
5. Voila!
6. Reconstruct your original ROM into a flashable .nbh file for backup en now go & enjoy this forum 'n' stuff!!

Hello guys, first of all: great forum with a lot of info..
I'm a recent owner of the HTC Touch Dual (Dutch Vodafone branded)
I've read a lot of threads before posting, but some questions are raised: I'ts about flashing my Nike to the original HTC Dutch ROM:
After reading all threads about this issue I should follow this order:
1. install HardSPL 1.15 MFG, described in the "Nike SSPL, USPL and HardSPL" thread.
2. Dump my original ROM (or should this be step 1, cause it's deleted by flashing HardSPL?)
3. Unlock my device, described in the "Nike SuperCID" - thread, with installing the original radio-version --> 1.58.21.23S as suggested
4. Flash to the original HTC-ROM (dutch) which i've allready downloaded
5. Turn the dumped Vodafone ROM to a flashable ROM and donate it at this forum
6. Ready?
As I'm studying on this for 2 weeks now, maybe someone can confirm this steps to be right, because I don't want to completely mess up my phone, or suggest some better ways...
Hope to hear from you all!
greetz..
Device:
Niki-100
Rom version: 1.31.172.16
Radio version: 1.58.21.23
Protocolversion: 25.65.30.04H
solved & updated
for those interested...
How did you get it done
Dear wpostma,
Nice to hear that you got it done.
I am curious how you went to work.
Did you follow the steps in your first post?
I am still doubting if i should update my Touch Dual.
I have an original NLD ROM on it right now.
What is your experience? Is the phone really more responsive?
Well if I can make a backup of my own ROM then I can always go back.
Regards, KoBuster
nearly exact the steps a described in my first post, but first make a dump, it's not so hard and described in the WIKI
- the next you've to install HardSPL 1.15 mfg
- i had to unlock my phone with CID unlocker, very clear described in the CID thread
- now your phone is ready to flash any ROM
Funny thing: I wanted to flash the original HTC ROM but experienced some problems with that ROM and the ROMS provided, and the most of them being WWE instead of NL turned me to flash back my Vodafone ROM again.. but in fact the switch to another ROM is availible now and that's very pretty!
Maybe I'll flash the Lite ROM if it's available.
that's the fact...
do you have the original vodafone boot splash it isnt in your rom i need it so badley please somebody help me thnxs in advance
no I haven't my original vodafone splash screen, interested too anyways...

ROM:Artemis 41.0 WWE (02/11/2010)
RADIO: 2.12.50.02_2
2.08.hspl
thanks!!
Sir you mention to have Artemis rom v41.0! but at the same time you mention to have HSPL!?
Did you have read/follow the install instructions?
I mean first of all you need to remove your HSPL from your device. Secondly you need to upgrade to the latest stock ROM 3.14 and than if you have don this; then you can install Artemis ROM.
This isn't something new, these information are mentioned step by step in the Artemis thread.
Pleas read again the hole procedure of installation, and follow them.
Ons you have don it correctly you will see that there aren't problems anymore.
We can give you lot of links to otter ROM/Radio builds but if you don't follow the installation instructions you will keep problems on your device.
