I just installed the latest DCD Rom, and so far it is excellent. Which GPS program are you guys running?
I particularly like Google Maps and Microsoft Live Search for just general playing, but those don't talk to you and give directions.
For that, I don't think there are any free options.
I downloaded the free Nav4All from here: http://www.nav4all.com It's apparently an older program, but does have turn-by-turn and voice. It took a while, but now it sees my internal GPS. I haven't tried it on a trip yet though.
Personally I like iGuidance best, text-to-speech and easiest to get around and use. My wife has a tom tom and i just installed it to try, no text-to-speech, cant move the map around without going through several clicks to get to "browse map," although you can change the voice and get cool voices, but id rather have the other stuff. The bad about iGuidance, it takes a little to get it to work on here and its not as smooth as it was with my BT GPS, still have to ry tom tom to compare.
EDIT: so i went out and used tom tom, nice. worked a little smoother than iGuidance and liked the graphics but I really missed the TTS. Hopefully iGuidance can put out a fix fo the com port issue

You have to have a program such as google maps running in the backround with gps active. Nav4All doesn't look for the internal gps automatically which is dumb as hell.
I'm using TomTom. Doesn't use data like Qoogle Maps and Live Search do.
I am using Odyssey Mobile with great results. They give you a fourteen day trial so far no problem.

I am using the trial version of Odyssey Mobile as well. It seems to be working, is accurate, and is cheap.

TomTom most certainly does have speech...but it is not set by default. You must select a voice (make sure to install some if you didn't already) and then it will speak all turns and alerts to you.

Those are pre-recorded voices.
What we're discussing is voice synthesis, where the app actually READS THE STREET NAMES.
Example: "Turn left at ramp to sunrise highway in 300 feet" instead of "Turn left in 300 feet"
Make navigating much easier to follow!
On that note, I use the excellent (and sadly discontinued) Mapopolis. Its nothing to look at, but reads text and can see the internal gps.

Its the TTS as Dishe said, makes driving so much better, never knew id miss it till i tried it without it. hopefully iGuidance will have a better work around soon...maybe once there is an official sprint release
Ditto on Odyssey Mobile! Great program and easy to use. Like the graphics and speech!
When I downloaded and installed, it said 3 day trial period, however the Website stated it was a 14 day trial period! Hmmm... Guess I'll find out which it is...

I tried that nav4all thing... gawd that's terrible. worst UI I've ever seen. Its free, but totally not worth it. Better off using Google maps and skipping the turn-by-turn updates entirely.
Odyssey looks nice, and is resonably priced, but the reviews I read on it placed as a middle of the road app. Price aside, there's no advantage to it over Tom Tom. If only mapopolis were still in business... no one appreciated how ahead of their time that app was!
I've had nothing but problems with the Odyssey. Failed install, locks up, black screen. Works one out of every ten tries. When it did work it was pretty sweet though. Only reason I keep trying.

there is a fix for that. i was on irc on freenode and they were talking about it, but i dont recall anymore check ppcgeeks.

another notch for tomtom. found us/canada iso online. works nicely, doesn't hang. but sometimes the gpsone is slow on coldboot and not so slow other times, even in same areas. but up and running...im a happy bird
i especially like that yoda gives me my directions and encouragement with the force now if i could just find mr t's voice!

I tried the TeleNav yesterday and is it just my phone or is the performance super slow?
On gNav, you can just flick thru the maps and the performance is so buttery smooth, but on TeleNav, daym, it's horrible!
It's cool that tNav has the ticket avoidance features but those aren't free so it's pretty much useless to me. Thinking about uninstalling this to free up space on the phone.

Haven't tried Telenav but I've never had any issues with Google Navigation.

Long press the search buttton, say whatever. See results. Highlight address. Select "Go to". Can't be simpler than that.
Google Navigation is naice.

There are voice packs for your phone. Check out SVOX classic. I have English Grace installed. She is much smoother than the jarring standard one.

Uninstalled it. Telenav has a running service you can't turn off.
Even if you kill it, it restarts itself.
Telenav appears to have one big advantage over Google. When calculating a new route, it will check traffic information and factor that data into the route it plots. Google appears to simply present the traffic data for you to deal with once it has calculated a route.

Last time I used telenav it didn't like to work while roaming. Google nav owns.
I preferred telenav when it was still titled sprint nav, whatever changes they made when they changed the name over suck, it made me never use it again.
Google nav is what I use now while on the roads, I use my Garmin off road.
The one nice thing about telnav is that it tells you exit names instead of exit numbers.

I have tried navigon as well and it ducks too. I was hoping loading map on the sdcard make the phone cooler while on gps, but it is as hot as data and god combined

thinking of buying an offline navigation app, as i live in Europe i can rack up major data charges just visiting friends, who happen to live in another country. also be used for business, i work all over the shop!
been checking on market, but lots of negative reports on most, including navigon. i have a navigon gps for in the car, its okay, but by the reviews the android app is not so good. or is it?? google maps/navigation is great, but it uses data charge, loads if on satellite view
anyone have an offline navigation system installed, or can recommend one thru previous use?

I think osmand+ is the best. You can download all maps vector-rendered (small files) or as tiles from google, openstreetmaps and many more web-map-services.
So, I live in an area for a while, where coz of the occupation there are no navigation-systems allowed... (even normal printed maps are ridiculous bad).
So thanks to openstreetmaps.org which is developed very well in the last years and helped me out a lot! Nevertheless some routes are interrupted by yet another unknown roadblock

been using the trial version of sygic, pretty impressed, used it for work and must say its pretty accurate, and very usable. i've been having closure problems, (not fc, just closing app and sending me back to home screen) although this may be related to a ram manager i had installed (testing now).
other was, in the centre of the dashboard display, you have the countdown to the next junction and an arrow to tell you the direction, these are overlayed on my phone and a bit messy, you cant at a glance see it properly, just a tangled mess. is this the same on the paid version? on the sygic site these are 2 separate boxes on the shown picture.
otherwise, no complaints, would like to know before i pay €50!
also forgot, the android splash bar is also hidden, if you recieve a text, you cant see the notification, or gsm signal etc.
also in the pay version?

I find the navigation on Bing maps to be better than Google. I like how it will tell me things while driving like turn left on 'x' street...there is a 7-11 on the corner...Little things like that make it stand out to me and really useful.
While I'm a big fan of all things Google, Bing maps are actually better looking and easier to use imo. I have integrated sat nav in the car but my phone is nicer to look at, faster and easier to use.
Yes the Bing navigation blows away google maps, in my experience. Google maps would have me lost as hell, Bing gets me exactly where I need to get. And with them integrating Nokia maps into WP soon, it will only get better.

I dont mean to be stupid but I have a RADAR, how do I get it to voice activate for navigation. it only gives me like a list of steps and turns but it does not actually speak "turn left, or 7-11 at the corner"
what am i missing?

The nav on the Radar blows when compaired to Google Nav. Not being able to have a screen with a full map only part of the screen with a map sucks. Now when you look at Nokia Drive which has the 3D nav. That looks so much better. MS has some work to make there Nav better then google. Yes maybe the information that bing maps gives you is better, but looking at the interface it blows ass.

Same problem.... if I accept that "navigation" is just a tiny map in portrait only, and the various directions are just text, I still cannot use the thing - the screen blanks after the usual time-out.
On the face of it, this looks utterly pants - unless I've missed something fundamental.

Google Maps and Bing each have their own problems. I recently tested out the Windows MAP app and it works okay. It definitely sounds better than the default robot voice you get with Goole Navi (which can be corrected but you have to purchase the natural sounding voice). My problem is it's not completely hands-free. I have not had the issue of the screen timing out. What it does is read you the directions step by step and at every 1-2 steps, you have to tap the screen to receive the next set of instructions: not all of us are rolling with a co-pilot.
I am very happy with offline navigation on my radar. I unlock the device using chevron and than put Navigon 4.1 on it with newest maps from 2012. The maps are great a lot of POI. I go to Paris on trip and use Radar often to find some POI's in Paris very quick response it starts very fast localization. The phone works great for navigation. Battery life is perfect.
What's the best GPS app I could use with the EVO LTE? I used sprint nav on my OG Evo, and it sucked most of the time. If I didn't get a good data connection with my phone, it wouldn't work right.

I have the old app and just keep putting it back in. Telenav is garbage and they want money. Sprint Navigation gets me there everytime. Just my 2.5 cent...
I have copilot. That fc's a feq times. When launched works after that. Also have navigon tbat launches. But freezes when inputting directions. Both need to be updated for ics soon. I use gps daily for work.

Google navigation is the best for directions with traffic knowledge, but sometimes you need maps/navigation without a data connection (on trip through WV coming across roadblock from accident, alternate routing without connection is important).
For this, I'd recommend getting NavFree USA. It has some interface bugs, but when you need maps and directions without a connection (in preparation for coming zombie apocalypse perhaps), you'll be glad you downloaded. Price (free) well worth keeping your brain safe.
Sygic is fantastic, offline maps and turn-by-turn navigation. Google Navigation is great if you have a data connection, Sygic frees you up to not rely on the data for longer battery life.
For anything on foot, use Locus Pro. Heck, there's even a navigation feature, but not turn-by-turn.

I don't think that makes Navigation work offline as you still need a connection to calculate the route.
Also, it sounds like Google's "new" offline feature is just making the precache feature that has been in Labs for over a year an official option. It won't enable offline navigation, at least not for route calculation.
I'm still going to give this one to Sygic.

This app is great and is getting better. I love that while in your car dock ut uses your camera and outs a car if your choosing to follow on screen. Maps dont always have address im looking for but im sure that will be fixed with an update

Google Nav works without a data connection if you precache the map area that you will be in before hand. You will need to enable this feature in Labs first.

Waze is by far the best for traffic updates, but can go 'round the way on directions at times.
Google Nav for when I really need to get there.
I split my time between Google Nav and Waze.
More and more I find myself using Waze in conjunction with my in dash GPS.
Like previously stated Waze does send you in a round about way at times, but it does learn your route if you travel it a few times.
Waze also has a web map & a really cool map editor for the community. Avoiding the cops and traffic cams are a nice touch.

Google Nav just doesn't work in the Metro Detroit area. Large streets have "boulevards" down the middle and left turns are not allowed directly across the boulevard. You need to make a right turn and usually go 1/4 mile or so in the opposite direction to catch a turn-around. These are "affectionately" called "Michigan Left Turns". If you were from out of town and followed its directions, you'd turn left at the light and, at best be lucky, at worst get into a serious accident. Google Nav is the only Nav program that I've tried that doesn't know how to handle the turn-arounds.
I've tried Waze in the past and going to give it another go, but it also messed up directions pretty bad. I was going to the Cracker Barrel in Belleville, MI and it had me get off the freeway what should have been one exit early, drive all the way around Belleville Lake until I connected with the road that was two exits West on I-94. It had me cross back over the freeway, make a right and drive a mile down a side road. With the restaurant about 1/4" from the "correct" exit. A round-about loop that added about 10 miles to the drive that should have only been a one mile drive. Now you may ask why I did that when I knew it was doing something funny. I assumed it routed me that way to avoid construction or an accident or something, but, no... it was just dumb.
I'd really love to start trying out my phone to do the GPS thing, but nothing has been as reliable as my TomTom.
Google Maps has location tracking data under "My Timeline." Historically it has been super accurate, showing the roads I used even when driving long distances. I also always use Google Maps. Ever since I switched to the Mate 10 Pro, this data has been straight lines across 20-40 miles of distance and highly inaccurate arrival times. I thought it was just Google, but I switched back to an Essential Phone and it became perfectly accurate again. I'm back to the Mate 10 Pro and I hope it'll work now, but I'm not holding my breath.
I often use the departure and arrival times in My Timeline for work data, so I'd love if it worked. Any thoughts?

I have same experience. I believe it's to do with Huawei battery saver. Pls let me know if you find a solution

I have not, but I use Google Maps extensively and never had even the smallest problem with accuracy. Always follows the road accurately and instantly recognizes turns (unlike the built in GPS in my Lexus sometimes). The "My Timeline" data is often just a straight line between my house and my destination, even if it's across a bridge.

Same here, whatever i tried didn't solve it (even clean cache and data).... Even tried disabling battery optimization settings on Maps and Google Services... Nothing. I also have indications that is has something to do with multiple google accounts (i find some locations being reported in some of my other accounts). Are you on a single account? But yes, same problems, straight lines, lost stops, no routes, getting stuck in one location for hours etc...

What for? Any particular reason? I have put everything to manual in Launch settings, and also almost every program to Ignore Battery Optimization. Battery is working perfectly, SOT time is still amazing, and i believe programs are working fine (except Maps and Garmin Connect)... If your reasons are RAM, then i believe RAM exists to use it, not having it free all the time...

Because manual battery optimization is buggy right now.
Settings>Battery>Launch>Manage automatically all apps
In other thread here in XDA I've user said that putting chrome to be managed automatically did the trick.
You can try both ways and comment here the results...

I had everything automatic the first week and Maps History started having those problems from day 1... So, automatic doesn't do the trick for sure. Same goes for Garmin Connect...

potential solution
I checked TimeLine today and since 27/01/2018, journeys are recorded with the correct level of detail again! Google Maps app last updated 04/01/2018 and I'm still on C432. No idea what changed to start TimeLine working again properly but obviously I'm really happy. Can anyone else report that journeys are being correctly recorded again?

I've got the same issue. I tried all of the tips and tricks I found online to no avail. Mine just says No Visited Places. ONce is awhile it does show a place. It pisses me off tremendously. Google Timeline is a great tool to remember where you've been
If you can't remember where you've been then you have bigger problems than Google Maps not working properly!
Personally, I try to turn everything OFF that records location(s).

Just because it isn't useful for you doesn't mean it isn't useful for anyone else. I use it for work. Exact driving distances and times at clients house are very important.
