{WM6.1 Compatable}Change Page Pool - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 ROM Development

I have created a simple front end to Paradis_Pals change page pool through activesync method. This was done as an experiment, but seeming as it works, I thought I may as well let others use it.
Thanks to Korand for patching the batch files.
Download and unzip the files to anywhere.
Connect your device with activesync
Run l3v5y Change PP.exe.
Select the PagePool you want.
Wait a few seconds.
Soft reset your device.
Download (Change PP for WM6, WM6.1 for WM6.1 devices):

The Page Pool
Applications use RAM in two ways. There is code that runs, and there is data that is created while it is running. On a NOR device, the code can run directly from the ROM and not be loaded into RAM first. This process is called XIP (eXecute In Place). NAND devices can't XIP, so their code is loaded into RAM and executed from there. If you don't have a Page Pool, this code is loaded into normal RAM. The Page Pool is a mechanism to limit how much code is loaded into normal RAM. With a Page Pool, we can unload code that hasn't been used in a while and reload it later if we need to. We can't do that without a Page Pool.

Please tell me which size of Page Pool is best for HTC Prophet?
thanks so much

I can tell you only my personal experience:
Compared to the previous 8MiB Pagepool on my device the 4MiB Pagepool is not slower, but I have more free memory.

The bigger the Page pool, the more programs you can run at the same time without the system being dodgy. You have less RAM available for your programs though.
6MB should be enough in both ways (free ram and amount of apps you can start simultaneously) If not, try 8MB.
You can go up, but only if you have more than 64 MB of ram in your device, then it won't hurt to have more Page pool imho.

helllo, I'm new in the world of the cooking, and i want change PP on WM6.1 on the OS.nb or MyRom.nbh
A solution exists for this release of Windows Mobile ??
Sincerely

Is it for a prophet ROM? as far as I can remember, the prophet uses *.nbf...
You should be able to use this with nb2nbf program, but I'll need to find the start address...
edit: start address is: 0x58956...

Sorry, i've don't see that this section isn't good, I've a HTC elf and not a prophet !
But I don't find for Elf !

Something is wrong...
I wanted my PagePool to 4MB...but at least i only have 44MB RAM instead og 52MB...
6MB PagePool is working fine...
Can you please fix the 4MB-Problem?!

I think that means it has flashed the wrong PagePool size. I shall see what is wrong, and try to fix it as soon as I can.

One quick thought: Prophet Tools (link in my signature) has the WM6.1 page pool settings. See if that works for you and if not I'll check that out as well.

Updated it with new info...
Again, updated with a short thing about losing settings while soft resetting.
Hello,
Please add this, how to change the pool size
1) download XVI32 (freeware hex editor)
2) open OS.nb
3) find ascii NKKD8
4) find it again (next occurance)
5) find hex value FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF 9B 4F FF FF 64 B0
6) you will see "8C 00 00 C0 00 00". the pagepool size is C0 (which is 12MB)
7) change it to 80 to have 8MB, or 40 60 for 4MB 6MB respectively.
8) save and reflash
if you backup everything before reflashing the same rom and restore after the flashing (using spb or sprite backup) everything should be fine.

Thanks for the submission. I've added it. It's not really pdaviet related so I added it to the ProphetFAQ and make a link.
FYI to the everyone. The wiki is editable by anyone. If I'm not responding, you can add stuff you feel is important to the wiki yourself. Don't be afraid to click the edit button!
I use the lock password and there is no problem for me... I used it with pdaviet, pdamobiz and gollum roms...
I think the lock password isn't saved if you soft reset. Try locking the device, THEN soft resetting.. do you have the guts to try? only option afterwards is to hard reset... =)

Special Note:
This is NOT an OFFICIAL ROM. You can not expect support from O2 by bringing in your device with this ROM. Neither should you contact them for support on this ROM. By downloading and upgrading your device with this ROM, you agree to the considerable risk of bricking your device; and that I can not be held liable for damage brought about by the usage of this ROM.
Jiggs
Side Note: This will not SIM unlock or change your mobile serial no. (IMEI) in any way. You can flash back to original ROM anytime! Do not attempt to flash this on ATOM EXEC! If you get COUNTRY ID ERROR, you did not follow steps above. Do NOT restore from spb / sprite full backup, this will overwrite system files and make your device unstable; worse, unusable.
NEVER ATTEMPT TO UPDATE YOUR DEVICE USING SD CARD FLASHING!!!
Official XDA Atom WM5 AKU2.2 WWE Thanks MightyOX!
To everyone who tested this ROM:
When I say this is for evaluation only, it means you are to test this ROM. It is not a perfect ROM. We will never know the bugs unless it is subjected to different scenarios. You can not also expect to have every solution to every problem encountered in this ROM. You can, however, do your part and contribute by finding a solution yourselves. I cannot do this alone, and this is not the only thing I do. I posted this ROM to share with everyone else, and get to enjoy more features for our neglected device. If you are not contented, you can always go back to the previous ROM of your choice. We are not forcing you to use this ROM. Please don't make demands here...
Jiggs
Good work!!! Make this ROM for Atom exec support miniSDHC...
Is this the same as the one you PM'd me with? <.<
I'm still going to test the beta to see if the SDHC drivers work, tho.
What is the difference between various page pool sizes. How do I decide which one I need.

more or less... hope SDHC works! only some minor changes. I had to change pagepool to have different program memory requirements. been using 4mb since yesterday, graphics is lagging but processing power is still the same result as per benchmarking.
Thanks again JIGGS....your update is keep on coming , blessing from you for our atom.. MANY THANKS
yes right, can you explain to us the pagepool differences? which is better of this 3?

I can't tell you which is better. You have to try it. Different users have different requirements. It's a trade off between graphics speed and available program memory. processing speed is not affected by it based on my benchmarking tests.

I don't advise you to sacrifice too much pagepool for program memory, tho - WRT experience from the WM5 builds, a large pagepool actually speeds up your device. If you don't wish for the Atom 1st Gen ROM experience (and, given that the unit I own used to belong to my first adopter sister, I'm well familiar with that), take the 6MB PP at least.
By the way, folks, I have "moved" my "sig". For great justice. ^_^
By the way: You know those default program cabs Jiggs puts into the extROM? It's safe to delete them if you don't intend to install them (you must install the extROM unlock first, however). Just as long as you don't touch anything that doesn't look like an official program install or directory, you should be safe - and you get to use your extROM as an install location. Hard reset and soft reset still works correctly without them around, so if you plan to use your extROM and need the real estate, go right on ahead.
(I wonder what happens if I hard reset with a custom cab in there... tho I'm a little too lazy to reinstall everything right now.)
Any chance of an update for the o2 atom exec?

contrary to our experience in WM5, WM6 didn't suffer as much LAG as it did during the past. In fact, I'm still using the 4MB without any complaints. I don't know for others who play games on their ATOM....

Actually, you don't need to unhide the Hidden Partition. You just need Total Commander and key in \_QHiddenPartition\ and perform normal operation (copy, delete, etc.)

Page Pool with wm 6.1

Is thier a way to make the page pool smaller. I don't care if my device runs slower it is better than doing a soft reset a couple of times a day.
their is a tool called pagepoolchanger for this and you can change it before flashing you just need to use it on ruu file first you can get it on ppc geeks or i can send you it if you need just pm me your email
i tried all the pagepool changers out there.. none change it below 6mb on the official 6.1
You can change the page pool with ppc kitchen..

for the 6.1 it changes the hex during the first ff ff ff, etc sequence.. not the second one.. if you want to change it.. from ppc kitchen keep it at 6mb and then go in manually using a hex editor and change it your self in the SECOND ff ff ff series hex code for the page pool. thats what i did.. n finally it worked!
uhh, this pagepool changer goes down to 4.00 if you wanted it.

Its clean my dear friend.
Only Office (minus onenote) and basic ppc soft such as calculator, networkwizard, and sim manager.
Why is this ROM consuming lot of memory then. only 23.6 mb free RAM ? Storage is quite impressive but if u get around 30 MB free then a clean rom is worth it, you can load a shell on top which on an avg will consume between 3-6MB

Its because of the page pool and usually for the first loading time, it use RAM, consider freeing the RAM after.
Mine, after installing 12 softs on main, 8 softs on extended, and 28 soft on storage card the sorage remain 27.72MB and program 13.83MB.
another reason for small amount of ram is that lamson's roms are set to have 4mb system cache that can be change under advanced config or any registry manager
i use 1 mb cache and 4mb pp and in any rom thats is kinda clean, can get at least 30 mb free ram

Yup, that is my problem also.
But I use one soft from this forum to install apps, its called Cabbatchinstall.
It can generate a list of softs on storage card and install one by one by its self (or skip it).
The UC only install on main memory but this soft can install on storage card or even extended_rom.
Here is the softs.

If I rememeber well, your previous ROM had geen call win green theme was selected. In the mean time, I've found BlackDiamond theme that looks as an orginal one. It's also Ok for me.
I'm really happy with your good ROMs

OS Builder Kitchen for Hurricane: WM6, WM6.1 and WM6.5 English + German

Finally also the Hurricane kitchen for OS Builder. You get WM6.0, WM6.1 (from Rose) and WM6.5 (from Captain/Maple) based XIP/SYS/package in the kitchen with the OEM parts from my batch-kitchen for Hurricane which was largely ported from the Tornado WM6 kitchen done by nitrogen.
You need OS Builder (see link above) and the archive from below link, then:
- Install OS Builder
- unpack the archive
- go to the relevant folder (WM60, WM61 or WM65)
- double-click on the file "OSBuilder.osb"
- push the green "play" button in the button bar -> see the build being created
- at the end you get OS.BIN along the OSBuilder.osb file
- upload this to your device via MTTY "l" (load) command
Mind that the MTTY can have 2 presets for the "load" command by pushing the "F" button in the toolbar. Set the "Download Command" to just "l" (the lowercase letter "L" without quotes) and select the "First time download file name" with the "..." button to the OS.BIN that you have created. So instead of typing (no quotes): "l my-path\os.bin" in the MTTY window, just push the Button "1" aside the "F" button. In case not present enter for the "mask ROM start address" just 00000000.

If you have a shipped ROM still on your Hurricane, some more steps have to be done. The relevant tools are in the \tools folder of the packages. Follow the sequence in the folder "tobbbie-prepare-flashing-(one-time-per-device)". I had started to link that to the OSB Tools menu as well but this is not complete.
tobbbie, tnx for the kitchen!
Does backlight driver work good on wm 6.5?
Thanks!
Backlight works as it should - no difference between builds. Mind that the backlight has some quirks on the Hurricane. Some settings are useless (set to 'ff) and sometimes (within the settings menu, I think) keypress seems not to reset the backlight count-down, nothing severe though.
Compared to my batch kitchen here all the UPX-ed stuff is removed as it eats much more RAM per UPX-ed program. Mind that the use of the paging pool is not commonly understood. In short:
all exe/dll code is running within the paging-pool RAM space if possible.
if parts of the code are not accessed, the oldest code copy is discarded in the paging pool if new code needs to run
if the code is accessed again, it is loaded back from ROM to paging pool RAM and executes from there
So small paging pool -> slow device: the OS is busy swapping code in/out
UPX-ed exe/dll cannot load parts of the code from ROM as only the whole file can be read and decompressed to RAM. So if such code is run, it reserves the whole required RAM for its code, however outside the paging pool.
Better is that not UPX-ed run inside the paging-pool RAM and eat nothing extra for code space and well co-exist with other programs depending on their execution needs.
SDHC on Hurricane (and Typhoon)
20121003 Update (since no new posts allowed anymore):
Just to let you know: The SDHC lets the device also read FAT32 formatted SDXC cards (e.g.64 GB). It even reads more than one partition (I have 2 on my Android) and mounts both of them (32k Cluster size used).
Not sure how well the performance will be when managing data there - but reading a large music collection should be ok
More good news:
It seems that the SDHC support from Tornado also works on the Hurricane (even the Typhoon!). By replacing the drivers and related entries in the .rgu, the device still boots and gets access to an SDHC card (4GB, 8GB). Export via WM5torage works as well and chkdsk does not report problems for a 5GB full 8GB card.
It may still require some more testing - but finally all that I wanted to have on these devices is finally there
Will post the updates soon (just a few KB) -> DONE, advice included in ZIP.
This probably could even be done via a CAB file - but I will not check this.

Just go ahead, I hope there is a larger community than here at xda-developers. I feel lonely with my addiction to candy-bar smartphones
Everyone so proud of carrying a large touch brick in their pockets, sigh.
You should try out yourself first though before posting further.
