Blank screen, red light? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

Alright so a friend of mine wanted me to upgrade his phone for him to the new radio and all that stuff.
I tried run the official installer but I got an error that the battery wasn't at least 50 percent.
I left it charging overnight, came this morning to see a red light on the device. It won't power on at all. If it's plugged into the USB on my XP system, windows finds a new "Data Interface" device.
Tried doin the resets with holding the camera and power button and all that with no luck.
I've flashed both my phone and my girlfriend's in the past without anything like this going on.. obviously since I didn't get any kind of flash actualy going, I don't think that had anything to do with it.
Anyone know what do with a phone in this condition?
Also, my friend hadn't activated his sprint phone yet, he got the phone brand new from ebay, and had it for about a month or so, but had an overdue sprint bill he had to pay before he could activate it.. so if he took it to the store would they replace it there for him even if it was never activated?
Thanks for any help.

soft set it that will work

Is that just hitting the reset button? If so, I've tried that but it does nothing.. also tried that while holding the camera and power buttons but that does nothing as well.
If you're talking about something else, then please let me know.
Thanks.

Sorry for the double post, but I should also add that I put his battery into my phone and it works fine and shows 100% charge.

couple things here for debugging purposes.
Check your battery against your friend's for signs of abnormality. (especially leaks/contacts).
If all looks fine and it still doesnt work with your battery, you can try flashing with his battery (though that doesnt make much sense, but try it anyway just in case).
Since you say your phone works with his battery and not yours, it would lead one to assume you have a bad battery, though, you know what they say about assume, it makes an ass of u and me. ha. Anyway, try that and post results.
EDIT: See what happens when you put your battery in his phone, post results.

Thanks for the reply.
Both batteries will work in my phone just fine and both show a full charge. Neither battery will work in his phone, and neither will power up the device.
Both show only the red light when plugged in.
Any ideas?

Ah, i read it slightly backwards. Sorry.
Ok, so when you put a battery in his phone a red light comes on and a blank screen? No noises or any type of error message? Check the contacts on the back of his phone and make sure they're nice and clean, Check the back of yours against his, I think these phones have that open port on them (i dont feel like actually taking mine apart to be sure), and make sure those aren't "shorted" out by anything. If everything looks perfect compared to yours, I'd say your best bet is the phone is broken. (assuming you've tried getting it into bootloader with no luck, softresting and hard resetting with no luck). Let me know what you find under the batteries.

When I have the battery only inside the device, it does nothing, no red light, no screen, nothing whatsoever no matter what I press.
When i plug it in, it does nothing as well, but if I hit the reset button, the red light comes on and stays on until I unplug it. If it's plugged into a USB port, windows detects "Data Interface" but finds no drivers.
I checked the contacts, they look pretty much the same as mine, no signs of corrosion or anything.

that's very odd.
We've ruled out the battery at least. (send me the spare, just kiddin).
When looking under the battery there isn't a little hole for a factory reset is there? (i havent looked under my battery since i got the thing).
If not, that sucks. If there is, push it and see if anything happens.
Otherwise, I can't think of much else aside from a broken phone. Defect of some sort perhaps. I'm going to browse my manual real fast to see if it says anything about a red light, i'll edit this post if i find anything.

Try installing different bootloaders on there to see if anything happens. Also, try the exit-bootloader program to see if that helps. I'm not sure but when my phone has a redlight, it usually means that something is wrong. If all else fails, make that dreadful call to Sprint's technical support. Their customer service is a joke but their technical support can be very helpful.

i cant find anything in my book about a red light. I would probably give Tech Support a call (and tell them to send me their book) and see if they know what it is.
But as the guy above said, try different bootloaders see if you can get anything at all.

have u tired your battery onto his phone or try to see if your computer picks up anything expect data device

I had this happen once, Try this...
1. Remove the battery.
2. Plug in wall charger.
3. Power the device. (this may not do anything)
4. Install battery and wait for yellow light.
5. Press reset button on bottom of phone.
If you still get a red light and no power after that, I would guess that the phone is defective.
X2K

Sorry to say, but the phone is bricked...good luck having sprint replace a phone that was bought on ebay.

Please read THE JTAG PROJECT
Greetings,
Please have a look at my thread and determine if this project appeals to you. Remember though, only submit it if you are totally sure that there is no fix for it any other way. Thanks.

hi, im having the same exact problem.. was there ever a fix for it?
thanks in advance

anyone? please helppp!! i just got this phone :[

ive had this happen twice since i got the phone. it happens right when i plug it into the charger, screen goes black and red light comes on. i found that taking out the battery for a little over 10 minutes while off the charger and it will come back on. havent had this happen since i got a replacement though.

Three days after I bought mine, this happened. Had done nothing with it (no third party software, nor rom changes). The tech said to let it sit on the charger over night, which did nothing. They replaced it for being DEFECTIVE.

Slack in my duties but not forgotten
Greetings all,
The symptoms described here are the classic where the bootloader has become corrupt. I am still working on it and have not given up, just had lots on the plate.

when i try to hard reset with battery in just get the red light around the joystick frash on then off, nothing else,

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Same thing is with me pls help us out to get rid of this problem ....
WBR.
Come on guys
Someone must know how to sort this out??
can it be fixed?
its in warrenty, but not sure if they would be able to tell what i have done
Have you tried just flashing the ROM again?
Can you still enter the bootloader ?
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Athena_Resets
Cant see the phone
hi, i cant re-rflash as when i connect to the pc, it does not see it,
thinking the only way im going to get this sorted out is to return it to t-mobile, just hope it would still be under warrenty, anyway i could cover it,
maybe a magnet stuck to it for a few days might help when they check it over??
thanks
just tried hard reset and bootloader reset again, with batter in, charger in, just charger ect
still no rwesponse
just red ring of dead around joystick, when using charger only
Try this, exactly:
- disconnect any cable;
- remove the battery;
- the SIM;
- wait 10 seconds;
- put the battery back;
- enter bootloader (camera button - pressed down all the way - with comm. manager + reset).
If you don't get the bootloader screen (with various color stripes on the screen), then yes, your Athena's unfortunately bricked.
Nooooooooooooooo
nothing at all mate,
but i guess the battery could be flat,
is there no way to get it to power up,
do you think i could send it away under warrenty?

Anyone near you that can lend you a fully charged battery? Alternatively buy a cheap spare battery.
@onkyojonny
Where are you located?
im near ashford in east sussex, and work in london, if someone can sort it out im happy to make a donation ;-)
thanks
Concerning the return, if you're not able to enter even bootloader mode, all that will be left is to return it, but it's indeed true that if they see your SPL's modified, for instance, they might send it back to you with a "sorry" note. :-S
is there noone on this forum that can sort it out??
rather that than send it back,
Bootloader's the absolute minimum that you need to recover from apparent bricking. If you don't, then I don't know of any "software" mean to rescue your Athena, alas.

Hi
I just had this happen to me, but for completely different reasons. I left my Athena on charge for an hour when the battery was at 10%. It then showed 60%. I then wanted to check that my spare battery had some charge, so I swapped battery and got into exactly the same situation that you have, red light on charger and nothing on either battery.
After reading this forum I tried procedure of taking everything out inc. SIM and leaving it for a minute, still no joy on the 1st battery. Left it again for a minute and tried the 2nd battery and it came to life instantly and booted. The 2nd battery reports 100% charge.
I would suggest that you buy / borrow a battery and try it. It is highly frustrating that you can't use the Athena mains only & swap batteries, but you can't, I tried. If you order a battery (I got one for £11, it is a Cameron Sino which have a bad reputation but it lasts all day, can't argue with that) you should get it tomorrow in the post.
I will see if now that it is working the OEM battery works. It may be that it has not charged properly.
Hope you get it working again.

Follow up, yes it worked when I put the OEM battery back in, still with the SIM out. I have now put the SIM back in and the 2nd battery & all OK. Very unscientifically I would say that taking everything out & using a fresh battery seems to have fixed mine.
yes, one of my (aftermarket) batteries produced the same symptoms just yesterday. it was in a near fully discharged state (< 5%)... so i wanted to put it in the athena and charge it. but athena would not turn on, just the red light. charging did not make a difference.
put the other battery back that was in it previously, it booted instantly, then i put the discharged one in and it still booted and then i was able to charge it up.
note: at other cases i can still boot the athena with such a discharged battery, they have enough juice in them, apparently the problem was something else.
...though i have a desktop charger for the thing.. just didn't feel like trying to dig it up. anyway here is a cheap battery AND desktop charger: http://cgi.ebay.com/Battery-Charger...hZ010QQcategoryZ20350QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
the charger should charge your battery up without having to buy a new battery (except the seller gives you one as a bonus) and hope it has enough charge in it. might help someone hopefully

[Q] Got a non-working Xperia X10, based off these issues, what do you think is wrong?

I've always been a huge sucker for good-looking phones, and the Luster White Xperia X10 has a great, unique look that isn't really matched or surpassed by any of the new Xperias, or any new phone at that.
So I got one... going by the eBay listing description, the USB charging wouldn't work because the USB port is messed up (which I prepared for by buying a AC charger)... but that aside it was supposed to work flawlessly.
Thing is, it doesn't.
As soon as I put a freshly charged battery in, I held down power and it vibrated like it was gonna turn on... and never did. Screen stayed black and I ultimately never got it to a functioning state. Been trying all kinds of desperate measures such as trial and error with USB insert angles to see if it was just "touchy"... and even trying to see if I could just get SOME form of response via recovery mode. And nothing worked so far. Sometimes trying to power it on makes it vibrate for a half second before it does nothing, and sometimes trying to power it on will just make it start vibrating endlessly unless I yank out the battery... but not once have I seen this damn thing power on normally.
The seller says he's quite surprised at this because, even when the USB charging officially stopped working, he was able to power it on and make a test call before the battery died (he did dodge my question about how long ago this was, which seemed a bit mysterious). The closest thing I can get to this phone showing "life" is that the LED indicator does blink red when the battery is completely depleted.
At any rate... he's offering me a refund... but I kinda just want to see this work.
What do you guys think? Any more tricks I could try to do to make this respond/test it, or should I just abandon all hope?
I would disassemlethe phone, unsolder the damaged portfirst -it might cause some power shortcut or even in betterlight ofbiewit takes the phone into some strange mode (eg. some resistance between pins can do this).
Or in the best way use the logic analyser connected on data links, but expectyou dont have one

[Q] Phone won't turn on!

Okay, so yesterday I charged my phone overnight, it was obviously charging, the red light was on. I woke up this morning, and BAM. No signs of life. at all. No "dim red light" or anything, i can't turn it on. I've tried everything, I tested the battery and realized that the battery does, in fact, have charge (~3.4-3.5v). I've looked at many many other threads, most of which are similar, very similar, except they have the red light blinking or dimly lit. My light won't even turn on when I charge it.
I tried that trick with command prompt where you type adb reboot-bootloader and everything, and it said "no device found". Does this mean that my phone is completely useless? Did it magically become bricked? (I have in fact rooted my phone, which is why I'm in concern, however I have s-on, which is supposed to protect from bricks right?) I haven't flashed anything in maybe 2 months. Can that even happen though, it works, but then suddenly it doesn't, because of a root problem? The only other thing I think i can say is that my phone drains battery like CRAZY. I was thinking about getting a new battery beforehand, and now im definetly considering it, but it shouldn't be the batterie's fault should it? it has a charge after all. Maybe the circuit is fried. Considering i bought it new from bestbuy about 5 months ago and was using the stock adapter and usb cord to charge it, do you think I'll get a replacement if there's no way to fix it?
Thanks for reading this, i know this must be such a nuisance with all my questions and everything, but my phone is really important to me and I don't want to make a mistake or anything with a phone I paid $300 for.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll do the best I can. Many people have had this problem and sometime using an external charger and or using a different battery has fixed the problem. If you can get a hold of an external battery charger and put the battery on it all night it should work. Post back with results.

Atrix won't boot - even with factory cable

I have a Motorola Atrix 4G on Bell Mobility. Currently the phone will not boot at all. The phone is out of warranty.
When this started I began by searching through the xda forums and found several similar problems. Most pointed to the sleep-of-death or a charging adapter problem. I have tried charging with the Motorola adapter that came with the phone, a USB cable and the Motorola Lapdock. None of these have provided any happy. Each time I tried, I left the phone overnight, when I checked on it, the phone and battery were cold. I tested a known-working battery from another Atrix and the phone would still not boot.
Some other searches point to a factory cable. I bought one on Ebay however the phone will not boot. I tested the cable on a known-working Atrix and it works fine. I did notice that when I plug the factory cable in to my phone and in to my Windows 7 PC, it detects *something*. Under device manager I see an unknown device called "APX". So far Google and xda searches haven't been able to provide me with a correct answer.
When I plug in the regular USB cable the green LED turns on for a while, if I touch the power button, the green LED goes out. RSD Lite does not detect anything, I assume this is because the phone is not in RSD mode.
I have tried combinations of volume buttons/power button as well, both with the wall charger and with the factory cable. Nothing displays on the screen at all no matter what I've tried. The phone had the stock install from Bell however was rooted with SuperOneClick (obtained from xda forums and installed many months ago) and had no third-party apps on it.
This death seemed to start slowly, at first battery life was at times terrible, then it moved on to not wanting to power on for a while if the battery died or the phone was turned off when the battery was low. Removing/re-inserting the battery several times typically helped. Eventually the phone got so bad, when it booted it would just crash repeatedly with a message about motorola.home.something (sorry I don't remember exactly what). Hitting force close would just bring the message back up again. I left the phone off overnight and the next morning, R.I.P. my Atrix
I have access to Windows XP or 7 as well as Linux.
Any help would be appreciated. Also I apologize for the long-winded post, I'm trying to provide as much information as I can.
I had this problem to, I freaked out, what I needed to do was to get another Atrix (in this case my Uncles) and make sure that the battery in it is FULLY CHARGED, then I took out my battery (in the broken phone) and put in his, then I got a solid green LED, then I had to leave it on the charger overnight, after that the M would show, but that was it, so I then went into fastboot and flashed the ICS Leak, and ta-da.

I've tried that with no luck. I should also note that the factory cable bypasses the battery, potentially eliminating any battery problems.
It's possible that your phone is finished. The 'motorola.home' error is usually caused by something you've updated (google search?) but I would doubt that it would cause your phone to not even start up.
At this point, I might be inclined to open the phone up (http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Motorola+Atrix+4G+Teardown/4964/1) and see if you can see anything obvious?

Nothing obvious when I took it apart, no visible damage or problems. Any other thoughts? I've been told to try ADB from a Linux box and see if it will do anything. I've started installing ADB but looking for more insight.

Update. I found this ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11901016&postcount=75 and now instead of "APX" in Windows device manager, I have "NVIDIA USB Boot-recovery driver for Mobile devices".
It looks like NVFlash might be something I need next. In other news, the phone when plugged in via the factory cable, is actually very slightly warm. It's the first new sign of life I've seen in this thing for a few days.

I've had no luck at all since my last reply. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046994 seems to have something to do with my problem, but I'm not able to dig up a solid answer. As best as I can tell, I manged to hard brick the thing and I'm up the creek without a required paddle.
Any other thoughts on this would be great. Even if I'm able to ensure the device is wiped, I could send it in. There are work files on there (I know, I know, I'm an idiot) I can't have out in the wild.
Just bought a replacement Atrix for $100. It included three cases, three batteries, wall charger with cable, car dock and a metric ass-load of screen protectors.
I do want to thank everyone for offering help and ideas, it was a good learning experience!

[Q] Not working after loading flash

Hello,
I was flashing my GSII, and selected CyanogenMod.zip with the pid file in Odin. It seemed to be ok, and the next step was to reboot the phone, however, it is not rebooting. The screen is black, nothing is showing. I tried 2 different batteries... nothing. Buttons, volume up, down combinations, and nothing.
Any ideas? - is the phone dead?
Sounds cactus to me. Service centre.
Or you could search for KingRat's method to 'jump start' the phone with the charger minus the battery. Highly unlikely to work but worth a shot. So is a jig. But manage your expectations, the phone is more than likely toast.
Edit - Have you tried connecting phone to PC & firing up Odin/seeing if it registers ?
Thank you for the reply. I will look up the jump start method.
As far as odin goes, I didn't try it because phone is not showing any life signs, so i didn't bother. I'll try and report back, however, everything is showing towards a dead motherboard... I woke up today thinking of new ROM, and now I'm looking for the successor to my GS2
Yep sounds like something major on the MB has carked it, unfortunately. But try those things anyway, you never know.

Nothing is working. I tried King Rat's "jump start" several times, It's not working. And also, there is no communication with Odin.
However there is one weird thing. Earlier today when I gave up with trying to fix GS2, I removed the SIM card, and left the battery in, and I left it on the shelf. Now, when I went to get it to try the suggested stuff, the Phone was warm. I don't know why. Battery was warm, and the area around the camera was warm. Since I got two batteries (original and replacement), I tried the following:
I - cool down the phone and put the replacement in, after several minutes, nothing hot...
II - cool down the phone and put the original battery in, after several minutes, also, nothing not
Something is happening, and I don't know what.
