Car mounting solution - Shift Accessories

Has anyone seen any sioght or sound of a possible future car mounting solution? I've found nothing myself so far. I asked RAM mounts about this. They got very excited and interested at first until they realised that the email enquiry i sent from my work e-mail was only a private enquiry. They then failed to provide a response!
I would love to use this puppy as my main GPS navigation and in car media entertainment.

proclipusa.com is working on it. They have an exclusive deal. They are working on one for the shift.

Thanks
I'll keep an eye out on their website. Not entirely sure how they can have an exclusive deal? Surely anyone can desgin their own cradle without needing the permission of the OEM for the unit being mounted,
What I will need to check is whether the cradle they produce will fit onto the mounting arms produced by RAM.

I think they were refering to a "certified" accessory manufacturer. Maybe the only one HTC recommends. Anyway, they are working on one right now. I placed a call to them a little over a week ago and that is what I got for an answer. Their US office and distruibution area is a couple miles from mine so I just place my order online and then pick it up there.

Thanks
When you do get it would you mind posting a few photos? in particular the back of the mount showing how it fixes to the mounting arm.

Will do. What type of vehicle are you going to mount it in?

I am still looking for car mount which can be use with Shift.....have to admit i don't see one yet, you guys have any better luck?

nothing yet, i looked at the proclip website and nothing
i curently have their athena car mount that holds the keyboard as well, but must admit, getting real board of it since i want my shift on my dash.
any luck anyone ?

ProClip is a bust for the Shift
I stopped by ProClip a couple days ago and talked to them about the Shift. Mine was the first one they had actually seen. They said that even though they could make a bracket for the Shift, the ROI would not be worth it. They were really impressed with mine but they said it costs around $5K US to design a custom bracket for something like the Shift. So, unless the Shift takes off in sales, basically a carrier picks it up and starts really pushing it, they probably will not make one. So that kills one from ProClip. Sorry

ProCLip actually SELLS carholders for the Shift
ProClip actually sells the CarHolder now, even with tilt swivel !
It's great to have the shift display Google Earth with my real time track, I now
use Google Earth as a navigation aid, and to look for cool places when I'm driving somewhere I don't know the surroundings.
Check http://www.reperion.com/example for the free software.

There is another thread related to this. I posted pictures a couple weeks ago. I picked one up right after they announced that they had them.

Mountguys.com Cupholder Mount First Impression.

I know there is some interest in these and I myself was waiting for someone to do a write up but I'm impatient and just got mine so I thought I'd throw some info out and hopefully help someone else out since I've already gotten so much out of this forum. The first thing you'll notice is that the plastic feels really cheap. Honestly almost repacked it to send it back because of how light and cheap it felt. That said and in particular because of the lack of alternatives, I gave it a shot. And on the whole I’m glad I did.
Putting it together and installing is pretty easy. I'm a nug and I did it without reading the instructions. Putting the gtab in and taking it out of the mount is also pretty easy. There are two sets of supports; the bottom stays stationary and the top is adjustable and easily fits the gtab in landscape and now that I think about it possibly in portrait too I will also see if my elocity a7 fits in it in landscape but I know it will in portrait (I’ll post a separate review for it in the elocity section if it works). In my prius, the position is as good as I could have hoped for making for easy inputs at stops but it’s not too useable while driving. While driving there is a certain amount of shaking but not too bad I could easily read off it with quick looks but it could be disorienting for some.
Also the cupholder mechanism takes some massaging to get it set well in the prius’ cupholder but it is doable. In my element it’s a whole other story (expectedly). The cupholder mechanism fit perfectly into my e’s cupholder but the cup holder is so low that this mount is worthless in it or any other car that has cupholders below seat level.
At this point I have no idea how durable this mount will be. I don’t know much about different types of plastics (I barely know the difference ABS and PET) but the material that this mount is made of does not inspire confidence. That said the plastic does not seem too brittle and therefore more likely to hold up. Time will tell and I will update as appropriate. I hope this information helps someone out there who was looking for a similar mount.

I bought the same one. Seems a little flimsy with the weight of the gtab. Moves a lot more than I would like while driving.

The next few days are pretty busy but I'll try to get some quick pics up. what year prius do you have? mine's an 09 so I can only speak to the positioning for 04-09s I haven't seen the interior of the gen3s.

It does move around a bit but once I set it super tight, I found it manageable but then I may be more tolerant the others.

The viewing angles have never been that big an issue for me. I personally don't understand what all the fuss is about. in this case in particular that issue is moot since the mount's angle is adjustable.
Thanks for the review and I look forward to the pics.

Anyone find a better car mount for the Gtab than the one talked about in this thread? Also what's the deal with all these Gtab owners also driving around a Prius? LOL.

Interested in a mount for your vehicle?

I posted this in a reply in another thread, but thought it better placed in the Accessories Forum.
For those that are interested in a simple way to have their transformer (or any similar sized tablet really) mounted in their vehicle, I am building mounts that will install much like an aftermarker radio would. For this set up, you would need a single DIN radio (not flip out screens like the Pioneer AVIC or anything, just a non motorized single DIN radio. Some of the fancier radios may work, but we haven't done any testing with them, yet). You would need a double DIN radio mounting bracket/harness specific to your vehicle. We are working on ways to customize it a little further based on vehicle specific applications, but right now we feel most standard vehicles should work with this set up. It will probably be a few weeks before our model is ready for production, but I should have pics of a completed install in my '06 Ram before then. The mount will be very secure (as secure as a radio installed) and will be on a 360 swivel allowing for angle adjustment (for passenger viewing, or glare for example) and will also allow both landscape and portrait angles (I believe, we are in the process of testing this theory). If you are at all familiar with installing a radio in a vehicle, than this would be very easy for you and would require very little customization on your end other than getting the mounts specific to your vehicle (pretty easy to do as Best Buy, car audio shops, or the internet sell them pretty cheap). Cost are going to be kept at a minimal to the end user until I can get this going. If you are interested, please PM me with you vehicle year/make/model and with some info about your experience in the vehicle audio market. I am going to be using the XDA forum as my demo crew as much as possible so I could definitely use some product testers (especially if you live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area).
Thanks!
I would be VERY interested in this.
2000 Honda S2000 (1st gen) I can do any surgery to the stereo you need me to, but it must have height adjustment and not get in the way of the stick.
Could you post pics of your dash set up do I can get a better idea? Not sure you would need height adjustment with this setup, but I don't want your shifting of the vehicle to interfere with the design either. I am working a design to slide in and out for those of us with trucks, but that is it so far. If there is a demand for a vertical adjusting option, I will look into that as well.
Thanks
Bah..if I didn't have an aftermarket double din radio in my car I would GLADLY try it out..I live in the fort worth area.

I am VERY interested. I've been googling this for a while, trying to find something.
Is this a radio replacement? Like a proper in-dash mounting kit, making your TF something of a giant removable face, similar to aftermarket stereos?
Ive been thinking about this for a while, cant wait to see pics!!

Got your pic, and that's a pretty tight fit there. It is going to be questionable on whether this set up will work stock... We may be able to customize something for you, but I would have to get some measurements between the shifter and dash at some point. We can get something together.
Once I get the swivel I should have pics within a few days.

@Silence I am sorry, I just noticed your question (thought it was your sig because of the space so I didn't even look). It isn't necessarily a radio replacement, although you could go that route, but you would need an amplifier (4 channel or 5 channel I believe) so it could handle the audio from the tablet to the speakers in the car and would be a bit more costly/sophisticated installation. Basically think of it this way, you would have two single DIN pieces mounted directly on top of eachother where the bottom would be your single DIN radio, and the top part being the mount for the tablet. Thus needing the double DIN brackets. The pictures will explain the concept once I get this installed in my truck (hopefully this weekend depending on parts delivery).

Ditto on the cables. Using a slide out drawer is something we are actually in the process of designing as well, but we are trying to avoid the general consumer having to make any severe modifications or irreversible mods. Why keep the FORD sync system at all? Just curious as the TF would pretty much replace the entire thing in functionality, right? I want to have the complete install done this weekend, but waiting on one part... How large is the radio for the sync system? Is it a traditional din set up?

I would need to see what you have behind that TF and you're bezel to see if this will work. I am using a cradle so it won't sit flush with the dash like you have it in the photos. We are working on the install today, Been told my part will arrive in 24 hours so it should be complete with photos this week.

Custom Car Mount

Hey everyone,
I am building my own car mount for my 94 mercury sable. Laugh if you want, its a beast with 85k miles.
Anyways, I came across:
Cradle

Mount
http://www.ram-mount.com/CatalogRes...65077045066045049048049085045067/Default.aspx
Since I have no center console (sadface) I am going to go to the junk yard and see if I can swap one in. Otherwise I am going to remove one of my DINs and bolt it inside there. I will post pictures once I get a chance.
I was looking into that cradle for a possibility in my application that I will be putting on the market, let me know what your impressions are of that cradle as it seemed to be designed for laptops, not a vertical placement for a tablet only set up.

Car Mount

Now that I`m getting my dongle I`m wondering if anyone out there has tried a car mount for their Prime. With the large screen and now functional GPS this would make a phenomenal in car GPS unit. My only concern would be damaging the Prime due to a bracket not supporting it properly causing it to fall. Anyone`s experience would be appreciated.

I have this one from Arkon, and love it. The extension arm rests on my dash, and the suction cup is relatively low on the window. I have never experienced any problems with the Prime falling out, or the whole mount falling down, because since the arm rests on the dash, there is minimal weight applied to the suction cup.

I haven't got my dongle yet, but the tabs that hold the Prime are adjustable, so I'm guessing that they can spread far enough apart for the dongle to fit.
If someone can measure the length of the dongle, I can measure it.
Bob
I just measured my dongle.....man that just doesn`t sound right. Anyways it`s 7 1/8 inch wide. Can you let me know if this would fit with your mount. I`ve looked at tons of mounts and yours seems to be one of the better solutions right now.
Thanks

Well, the spread on the mount tabs only gives about 4" of clearance. BUT, in reality, you only need one tab on the top holding it. Attached is a pic of the keyboard (since I'm using the TP for the pic and it shows the edge of the dongle area) and the keyboard still holds solidly in there. Also notice my mounting. The extension arm (adjustable) rests on the dash, so, with the tablet supplying a downward weight, the suction cup would be "pushed" into the window so it's not like phone/gps attachments where everything tends to pull it off the window, the TP is actually doing the opposite.
The tabs are spring-loaded, so in order to insert the TP between the tabs, you would insert the top of the TP, push upward, then slide the bottom in.
I can't really tell you the force required, but it's definitely not minimal.
I think that the TP, in the mount, would stay in position even in a front or rear end collision.
I made one search my user name & you will find photos here

I received my Arkon windshield mount today. With the dongle attached I can use all 4 feet of the bracket because the bottom of the bracket is spring loaded and easily accomodates the dongle while still keeping the tablet very secure in the mount. I haven't tried it in the car yet but the build quality seems quite good.

Did you get the same one I got, or did you get one of the variations? I was wondering if you ever got one after looking at the different options. I know that I am very happy with mine.
If you don't have a Nav program, I strongly recommend CoPilot Live Premium.
There are a couple of threads here that discuss the different options.
Bob
I got the same one. Really like the build quality and it holds the tablet very securely even with the dongle. I am trying to decide between sygic and copilot. Reviews seem to be fairly evenly split. Its too bad there is no copilot trial. I've been playing with the sygic trial and really like it.

I'd suggest going to the CoPilot site and take a look at the video. From what I understand, all the add-ons for Sygic make it more expensive then CoPilot Live Premium....and I would definitely recommend the Premium over the standard.
You might want to take a look at the comments in this thread....Quite varied

Quick update....I took my tablet for a spin in my car this afternoon. The mount is really solid and secure. The tablet is not going anywhere. If anyone else is looking for a car mount this is definitely a great option, especially at $40.
So I ended up purchasing Co-Pilot Premium and unfortunately I was really disappointed in it. I did a lot of reading of reviews and watching video reviews and it seemed like a great deal and I really good piece of software. However, the Canadian maps are ridiculously out of date. I live in a rural area of Ottawa (the capital of Canada). My house was built on a new street 11yrs ago and the street isn`t even on their map. I have also quickly noticed a few other road changes that were made in Ottawa at least 8yrs ago that are not reflected on their map. I really like the program itself, it`s fantastic...but with the map being so out of date I`d be hesitant to rely on it for a trip. I have contacted Co-Pilot and requested a refund due to how badly out of date their Canadian map is....but I`m not holding my breath.

I am surprised that their Canadian Maps are so out of date. However, they are not alone in this issue. My niece moved to a new house (similar situation) a number of years ago. So long ago, I don't remember the dates. But I had the same problem of finding her....I used Google Maps, Mapquest, Navteq Maps, Teleatlas Maps...None of those companies showed her development till very recently.
Do you know that other sources have your street identified? Maybe you're in the same boat I was...where nobody has it.
CoPilot does have a nice feature where you can identify map errors. They will check them out and fix their maps accordingly. You can submit a map Update on this page
http://www.copilotlive.com/us/support/
or even in the app itself, by going to "MyCoPilot" then selecting "Submit a Map Improvement".
FYI: Most map changes take close to a year to get to the consumer. Navteq will make changes, then quarterly will send them to the software vendors. The vendors then massage the data to meet their program requirements...After all that, it is eventually released as a map update.
I'm not sure that Sygic would be any better, and avoid NAVFree for now....They showed my location in the 'wrong town"
Bob
Yeah I was shocked. My address and all the streets around it were on google within a year. They're also on my Garmin and have been for some time. I have submitted the corrections to them and opened a support ticket as well. Sygic shows all these locations properly as well.

Xperia Z3 CD slot car holder - one that won't press the buttons!

Hello,
As I've searched and sworn the last couple of days searching for a CD slot holder for the Z3 which won't press the buttons on the site, and managing to find one today, I figured I might as well share, perhaps someone else is trying to find the same thing.
The only place I was able to find it was on Amazon DE and on Ebay (same seller, though from Amazon they wouldn't deliver to my country).
I did find one other variant from kwmobile but quality seemed worse.
Anyway, hope it helps.

Still haven't received the one I mentioned, but looking forward to it
Looking at your link, my current one is pretty much like that, it's this one here (well, used to be, mine is cd slot, not air vent, but it seems Amazon changed the item or something)
I recently bought the one from BrainWizz (I can't post links). I lock my phone between camera and volume buttons and even without any case it doesn't touch them

yeah that would be a pain, i guess its one of the things that you have to look out for especially if you dont have a case.
out of interest the one you purchased, are you able to use the headphone jack while in the holder? thats the only reason why i got mine i cause i sometimes plug into my car so i can listen to music incase i forget my ipod.
Cheers
It hasn't arrived yet but I don't think so. I never considered that since I connect the phone to the car via a Bluetooth which goes into the aux port of the car.
On a second thought, I've had it for 2 weeks now, quality is crap, I definitely do not recommend it.
