I have been searching lately and haven't found anything . Is
there a way to use a 7" Android Tablet (rooted Nook Color
running CM7 ) as a graphics tablet for pc? Such as the ones
made by Wacom where you can see what you are drawing
on the tablet and on the pc screen. I know you could
technically use a remote desktop program but that's awfully
laggy. I was hoping there may be a way to use the usb cable
to plug up the tablet to the computer and simply use it as a
editable surface to draw on .
If this is obvious, I 'm sorry. I have just been thinking about
this a lot as I currently own a Bamboo Fun tablet as well but
I' d like to see more detail on the tablet itself.
I tried iDisplay and it 's too laggy. A usb method would
be optimal and I figured since I'm rooted someone may
have figured something out ...
Also, I have USB hosting active on the tablet if thats
necessary.
I know it has come up before (about 6 months ago from my searches) and was wondering if anything has happened at all. I would prefer that I have the option of extending my screen (for entertainment) or duplicating it (for art work)

I wish I was bringing you an answers but instead, I'm asking the same question. Every few weeks I scour the web for an alternative to iDisplay, specifically something that is wired for speed. I travel over half the year and I'm in the habit of lugging a small monitor with me so I can work efficiently. I know Toshiba has a portable usb monitor...isn't there a way to make our tablet's function this way as well?
If there is anything out there to try/buy or support? I'm in. Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks for putting your name on the list! I have been looking everywhere for something that could work with no luck. It doesn't seem like it should be hard to tap into the screen of a tablet through usb. Especially seeing as we have the drivers and what not.
Tapping into the monitor would be nice but to take it a step further, integration would be optimal. Such as the integration of the two touchscreens in the acer notebook. Your android device could be used as a virtual navigation device, you could use it to hold windows or play media, or you could even use it in art related programs as a drawing tablet.
It seems like there should be a bigger demand for this. I'm surprised there isn't
I've been interested in developing stuff like this for a while now, but unfortunately, I just haven't found the time to devote to such Android development.
For this to work, your PC would be acting as the USB host. The tablet would still just be a USB device connected to your PC like it always is (you would not be using your tablet as a hosting device for this). The PC would need the proper driver software (which, as noted, already exists). But software on the tablet would also have to advertise and implement additional usb profiles/protocols in order to inform the host that it has additional USB monitor/touchscreen functionality. This is the part that to my knowledge, does not yet exist. (if it does, let me know, ya'll may have done more research on this than I have)
In other words, yeah, there are drivers for a PC that know how to talk to a usb monitor/touchscreen. But on the other end there needs to be software that knows how to act as a usb monitor/touchscreen and fulfill the other half of that conversation. When you buy a usb monitor/touchscreen from Wacom or Toshiba, they're providing a device which already knows how to act and talk as a usb monitor/touchscreen. But that software is running on their device, so unless they've made some libraries available somewhere or there are some standard libraries available somewhere for this, it isn't as easy as one might think.
This might make more sense if you consider a simpler device like a usb keyboard. Your PC knows how to receive keystrokes from a usb keyboard because it has the appropriate driver software. However, if you wanted your tablet to act as a usb keyboard, you would need software on the tablet that knows how to send keystrokes over USB using the standard usb protocols/profiles.

You need to know if the Flyer supports OTG or not, the Xoom does. That's the cable that guy is using in that video. I'm not sure if it's supported on the Flyer.

It looks like the Flyer doesn't support USB host, as some things would need modifying from the searches I've done. You could buy the $2 item and try it, but it most likely will not work.

The two are not in any way related, however when I looked at the modules loaded it appeared that the HC rom would support usb host.
I sent an email to HTC this is what they said:

I think the port does work in usb host mode but it is not powered, so you need to use a powered hub to get anything to work. This has been discussed before, do a search and see what you find.

Anyway, can I hook up a hard drive with external power or do I have to have a powered hub? I have successfully used a portable usb drive and a Y-cable with power end plugged into a usb battery before where host was enabled on my Gen 7 Archos, but there wasn't enough power to actually run the drive. Do you think this setup will work on the Flyer with HC?
AS long as your hard drive will run without any power from the Flyer and is properly formatted (FAT32) it should work with or without a hub

It should work with any device that that does not require that it be powered by USB for example the external powered hard drive you mentioned. For directly connected devices only low power devices such as pen drives would work, rotational disks will most likely require a powered hub/battery to operate.

It depends on drivers, and how vold works. Ext3 should work, or could definitely be made to work. I've never tried NTFS so can't comment on that.

Some people have reported success with USB host on Flyer with Honeycomb using a powered hub. I have not tried that myself.
Most NAS (network attached storage) drives can be used with android, but i recommend you get one of the file manager apps that supports them from the app market. Most have a web based interface as well, but this is usually slow and clunky.
Many are way cheaper than this Seagate item.
I use Dropbox cloud storage with great success.

are you 'sure' there is, or are you just assuming? because i can't find anything
other threads on xda say that a powered external drive 'should' work (but no one who has tried it has confirmed), and on androidforums they categorically say that it will not work
If you are only concerned with videos or music, get a DLNA compatible server and that will work with Flyer, problem with all of these is they need a wireless LAN and its hard to guess if they will work with the Flyer or any other device in a standalone mode. I"m betting the Flyer will refuse to connect to them ad-hoc.
This Seagate device does appear to have a unique ability to setup its own network allowing direct access without another router. Might be useful in that regard. Of course performance is going to be slow, but fast enough to stream one file.
Be sure and read the reviews of users for the android app before you buy one, they are very poor.

yes, i had read those app reviews, which has simply brought me back to the most basic of questions: other than 32GB SD cards, we have zero confirmed options on extending storage?
Unless you are sitting on a LAN via wifi, or you are running Honeycomb with a powered hub, you'd be a lot better off carrying extra SD cards. This is the same for MOST, not all tablets. Except for a couple of heavyweights, even those that have USB host don't have the power to run a external USB drive

It has 2 usb connectors one for power and data the other for just power.
I formatted it in Fat32 and found a 2 dollar adaptor to plug the data connector into my flyer.
I then plug the power connector into a usb power source (I’m using the charger from my EVO 4G phone)
Works great … all the files are displayed in Astro and Root Explorer.
I’ve seen the drives as cheap as 75 dollars. Just search around.

It’s really simple … if the device you are trying to use doesn’t have its own power supply it will draw power from the usb connection, however the Flyer doesn’t provide power.
So you will need to use a powered hub for your device to get power to operate

but if the external drive is connected to the powered hub, how will it also connect to the flyer? Y cable?

I’m running FlyHoney (haven't updated to latest leak yet) and after plugging in the device I go to settings > storage scroll down to usb storage then mount usb.
Then open Astro and scroll down ... there is new folder labeled USB.
OK, I have Honeycomb too, stock version, but the Host USB does not come online with either a standard cable or an OTG cable. The disk is powered by a Y cable or I can connected it the powered hub. The disk is formatted FAT32 as it should be , looking at the dmesg in terminal , the USB interface never even activates. I wonder if FlyHoney does anything special that stock HC does not do?
I have the Seagate satellite wireless hdd and it works with my flyer. Can stream movies and download from it. Cannot upload. App interface not great, but works

Now as the Nook tablet does not have a camera, I was wondering if there was any thought of the possibility of somehow getting an external camera to work with it. Whether this be some sort of webcam or what I have no idea. I just thought I'd throw the idea out there and maybe someone has some brainstorming thoughts that could help.
So, any thoughts on rigging up some sort of camera setup or how we could approach this?
It's not possible atm with the stock B&N os. USB hosting has to be activated with custom ROMs in order for you to connect the digital camera via the micro USB port.

Any digital camera should be able to connect to the Nook Tablet once the USB hosting mode is enabled in the custom ROM. The Nook Color with CM7 allows users to review digital camera pics when connected to the micro USB in host mode. Fattire and other devs are working on CM9 for Nook Color to allow USB host. Now that the bootloader is cracked, custom roms and CM9 are sure to follow. Patience.
I'm perfectly patient thanks. My question was simply to do with if its possible at all and if theres any precedence in the matter. After doing some research (some of which was I found similar to what you stated) it seems that it is, it'll just take a bit of work, as with any of this tinkering.
Apparently the hardware has Bluetooth, so it CM9 can harness that power, there will be another potential connection point for an imaging device.
Looks like no antenna though, so range will be <1m.
That wouldn't be so bad for such peripherals like a camera or keyboard.
In fact, the only bluetooth devices I use with my Xoom are my keyboard and mouse.
tinycam sure works well and is visible in the market so no need to do the tb/db shuffle. I haven't tried it for a dedicated cam but if it works with all the others I don't see whay it shouldn't.

I have both the original USB 3.0 Samsung cable + USB 3.0 Ports on my PC ( Asrock Z87 Extreme4 Motherboard).
USB 3.0 enabled in BIOS and everything. My computer detects it as 3.0 cable .
But whenever I select USB 3.0 mode on the phone and transfer large files,
I noticed there is barely or no difference in transfer speed at all, as compared to MTP (regular) mode ?
Is anyone in the same situation .
I heard this 3.0 feature is actually just for charging speed not transfer speed on the S5.
Can somebody clarify ?

I transferred a 9.8 gb file last night in under 5 minutes. I don't know exactly how long it took but I know after my 4:27 YouTube video it was finished. I have personally seen much faster speeds. Are you missing drivers for your mobo?
As for charging, I get the same voltage irregardless old which USB port I use. Only USB port I know that would make a difference is one of those new high voltage always on ports I hear about.

Whoaaa, the speeds are at minimum double than regular mtp. But where the 3.0 really shines is transferring a bunch of small files as opposed to a few large files.

WELL...Apparently USb 3.0 is not supported by MTP w/e AT ALL :
"From what I see it's a technical issue with the Android OS. Certain android applications are restricted from being moved from the internal memory to your internally mounted external SD card. That's part of android's protection: your "external" SD card is no longer considered as an USB mass storage device. The reasoning popped out at me when I began to think about my HP Touchpad running CM10 (ICS). When I mount it to my Linux Desktop, it's still recognized as USB Mass storage device.
Using MTP protects permissions, users, groups, and other file management parameters. Unfortunately, libmtp has not yet been updated to support USB 3.0 speeds. We can only hope it will be as USB 3.0 is becoming more and more prevalent.
The only way I see one can benefit from USB 3.0 transfer speeds to and from android devices (Kit-Kat and beyond) now is to use an OTG 3.0 thumb drive, until that glorious day when USB 3.0 is supported by libmtp."
