Newbie question: opinions on which ROM? - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo ROM Development

Hi all,
I've been looking around the threads for a while now and while I'm excitedly waiting for my U1000 which I just bought on ebay I'm wondering if people have an opinion on which ROM to use. Are there pro's and cons on each or is it just mostly visual?
So far I've been reading about Black Dual by PK 3.0, AP ROM v4.0, v3.0 and the older Black one.
I thought it would be simply a case of going for the latest but that doesn't seem to be the case. The 4.0 and Black Dual seem to be the same age but don't seem to be the same. Is one better then the other? Does one suit a different use case better than another?
Thanks for any guidance.

Before deciding which ROM, I felt it will be safer to use your newly bought U1000 for awhile to ensure set stability and it’s characteristic. Then when you flash other ROM, you will have better understanding of your set.

PK is the head chef for the Athena Project (AP) it is not PK Dual 3 it is AP Dual 3 and it came out a long time before AP4 which is based on the 7510 ROM and is, by far, the latest and greatest.
AP4 is the one to go for IMHO.

The answer is always the same in ICT: the best is the second release of the latest so AP 4.1 (some bug fix, more ram and more system resources, may latest opera, and ..., SPL with a way to go back to the standard one, just in case). I am still using AP2 on mine but AP3 also works fine

How come you're still on AP2 if you don't mind me asking?
I thought I may just defualt to the latest and greatest and go with AP 4.1 but the black dual screen shots look nice and I like some of the Dual Touch features that seem to have been added to that one (I'm guessing they're not in the AP4?).
If it's the 7510 ROM does that mean the front camera on my U1000 won't work as the 7501/10 don't have a vga camera?

I haven't checked the video call application but in the camera application the Front Camera could'nt be used. In AP2, in the camera application, I have the front camera too

Video call doesn’t exist in AP3 and 4 unless the dial skin has the video button.
About the Front Camera (secondary VGA videocall camera), if that is what you are referring to,
can be activate from camera application top centre 3 buttons, on the left.

OOOPS! I haven't fully checked the camera app, I checked it now also in standard resolution. Yes, it has the video call feature, just uncheck "disable phone skin" button in REALVGA (and use the 192 DPI resolution)
If you leave the phone skin enabled in 96 or 128 DPI you can't check the number you are dialing, because the SKIN isnt' designed for 128 or 96 DPI.
But you STILL have video call feature

Video calls working great!
After reading, today I untick the “disable phone skin” on Real VGA before switch to other dpi.
Surprised to find in both dpi 192 and 128, I have the video button and can make video calls.
Video was clear and sharp provided the other party stay put.
Very happy to find it working wonderfully, many thanks to the AP teams.
Thanks sergiopi, otherwise I may still thinking it it not availabe.
Oh, why there is the need to tick the "disable phone skin" in the first place?
Find it strange way to disable a feature which is available all the time.

Looks like you've got one more choice to try, courtesy of Irus. Especially if your unit is still under warranty.

I found the reason today, bad experience with the video button available.
Contact name list and keyed phone number most of the time not shown.
Revert back to normal, without video button...sign.

I think it's sort of worse now
I have seen so many choices, vanilla 3, black dual, AP2,3,4 ahhhhh.
I might just try the stock one with the spb or whatever that add on is called and see how i go for a while.
p.s. what's an SPL?

Sorry to be asking this, can you be more specific on the improved speed? I understand that in V1.0 page pool size was the same as standard ROM, so how is it possible to have improvement in speed? If it is the regular registry tweaks I'm doubtful that it will have any noticeable difference compared to standard ROM.
I have tried out the applications such as HTC X button and agree that the application were poorly chosen. In fact, it will be my preference to NOT remove any standard application such as Opera, and not add any new application at all. I personally think that it an 'improved' set of application is a 'deproved' to another. I hate the green theme for comm mgr and audio manager, but others want to keep it. I like pBar over HTC X button, but others think otherwise. I want to remove voice commander but others hate microsoft voice command. Therefore we should not add or remove any application as this could only introduce bugs and instability.
Speaking of bugs, I don't find the standard ROM buggy at all. On the contrary, there were quite a few reports of bug in version 1.00, which hopefully will be addressed in version 2.
The only common denominator for all, is improved speed. If we want to add anything else, it will be the black theme, real vga, and dpi resource packs, and plenty more icons.
The most important thing that I look for in the ROM is speed. All others I could easily customise by myself, including registry performance tweaks, which unfortunately could yield only marginal, if noticeable speed improvement. I could be wrong, but I got the impressi that dramatic speed improveme is best achieved by changing the page pool size.
Another thing that I observed is that it is not uncommon for us to declare a new ROM 'blazing fast' minutes after we've loaded it. In fact, when you try it out, you don't feel the same way.
Without that noticeable speed improvement, I won't rush into voiding my warranty.
Just saying what I honestly think.
It is all subjective - I love the apps in V1 and am sure V2.0 ( due out any tilme now!) will be even better) these guys know what they are doing and have listened to the comunity which, of course, means it's a consensus and so may not suit you. I am not a hacker and so am comparing the speed to the standard ROM with NO speed tweeks.
I don't know what they've done, but for someone like myself, who just wants to install a new ROM and have the best (by consensus) apps and speed PK Black Touch is the way to go. If you are willing to do your own tweaking you can cook yor own but I'm a lazy sod (I'll blame laziness rather than stupidity) so I love the Black Touch ROM.
If you want something different and know what you are doing there is nothing stopping you.
As for warranty, IMHO here in the UK, the first thing they do is a factory reset and flash with the latest official ROM - they don't even check to see what was on it and 'probablly' wouldn't know how to see if it was CID unlocked - I've never had a problem - but then I don't have a warranty on my Ameo so that's easy for me to say.
Good luck.
its already out(2.0)

Blackstones TouchFlo is beeter than Touch Pro!!

check out http://www.theunwired.net/?item=videoview-hands-on-with-the-htc-touch-hd-windows-mobile-smartphone
looks like an improvement over TouchPro and Diamond. Someone needs to hack this for a Touch Pro Rom
Hope manilla will be supported in landscape mode, otherwise we'll have the sam problem they have on the Kaiser forum, with manilla2D only working portrait mode. I guess it's still being developed, but wasn't blackstone supposed to have new tabs, like stocks and what more. I'm not as impressed as I though I would be (the new Oprah looked nice though), but who'll know what the futere will bring, Cheers

Huge, I'm glad I went for the touch pro, however some improvements could easily be placed onto the pro and I agree that they should be.

You do know that Resco Audio Recorder will do it right? It also will store them in folders for each day if you wish and it does it automatically with each call.
Check it out if you really want to try it. It has a trial for 30 days.
No Resco Audio Recorder doesn't do it right.
I agree... and i propose Vito Audio Notes Touch!
No improvement? 5MP camera, bigger screen, headphone jack, those are 3 improvements right there.
THAT BEING SAID
It's the same old TF3D (with an extra row for the bigger screen OMGOMGOMG), it won't be nearly as exciting as the Diamond/Touch Pro because they were the first of their kind. For that reason, I'm getting a phone with Android.

Can a FUZE use a Tilt 2 rom?

Since the hardware is almost identical, can a Fuze use a Tilt 2 rom?
-Matthew
Well... Is the device in question a Fuze or a Tilt2? It's a Fuze, and needs to use a Fuze rom. If you look around this forum you're sure to find many well built custom Roms for a Fuze that incorporate bits and pieces of the Tilt2's new toys.
I was hoping to take advantage of the Tilt2's ability to capture video at 640x480.. Possible?

Never, if you want to take out the video camera from the Tilt 2 and put it in the Fuze without breaking your Fuze, its the only way.
No, the size of screens are different.

I don't know what that has to do with it.. When I record video on my FUZE now, it displays the footage in crisp, clear 640x480.. But when I play it back, it is half that resolution.. The Tilt2 has a setting to capture at 640x480, I was hoping to use the camera utility from the Tilt2 rom and test it...
-Matthew
Not possible. The ROM won't help you with it even if it was possible. It is a hardware limitation of the MSM7201A chips. The ones for the U.S. can not record 640x480 video and neither can the Tilt2 because of some patent infringement.
You can not load a ROM meant for some device on to another device. The ROM have all lot of stuff which is device specific. Trying to load a TP2 ROM on a TP device might even brick your phone.
As far as similarities go. TP2 is a WVGA vs TP which has VGA display.

[Q] Rom Supporting The HD2's 5m Camera??

Hey all I am living in the UK and have been trying out alot of the different Roms for the HD2. However I have yet found a Rom that supports the 5m camera. I find that the Stock Rom is much better for Camera and Video.
So my question to you, Is there a Rom out there that is as good as the 'Core Series' and 'Energy' Roms that support The 5m Camera on the HD2???
Every rom supports 5m camera. What's your problem ?
No it doesn't the core series v2 and v3 only support up to 3m on the camera and same as the energy. The pictures you take with those roms is nothing compared to htc stock

Don't you think it would be better to open your eyes and flip to the second page of the settings where the 5MP are clearly selectable?
lol, yes i tried that but it still does not look half as good as the stock Rom. Surely other people on here agree with me?
hang on while i force my way through the people fighting to agree with you,,,, oh, wait there aren't any,,,,,
hehe
i think your issue must be something else, since no one has yet mentioned anything similar, and i think it would have been brought up a long time ago if it were really the case.
Could it be something simple like maybe a tweak that you always apply whever you flash that is affecting it? sometimes something seemingly unrelated can cause issues in something else.
care to post a few examples of stock rom vs cooked rom images?

i just wrote a tutorial in this thread (post 26) that should significantly help improve the camera's quality:

[Q] Future owner, need some help setting up

EDIT: This is for X10 Mini Pro
Greets
So, I've looked around for a phone and while I can get other phones like the LG P500 (Android 2.2 capable) or the Galaxy 550 (cheaper 2.1), the keyboard, the whole design and all, it has gotten to me. I have a low-end touch only and it really annoys me to type with a touch keyboard.
So I've been looking around for all the goodies around and saving all the files on my PC, all organized and ready to be used. So far I've taken care of:
- Rooting the phone;
- Installing Link2SD, from what I read, 2.1 can't move an app to the SD;
- Installing Skyfire 4 so flash videos work.
Now, slade has a fully functional ROM out. How beneficial would it be to ditch the phone's 2.1 for this or any other ROM?
I've been keeping my eye on the CM7 ROM as it seems to be 2.1, right?
So, long post short, what else do you recommend and how beneficial is it for me to dive into the custom ROM environment?
Thanks
Az
It depends on ultimately what you want.
CM7
Fast
Camera LED doesn't work
CM6
Decently Fast
Most everything works (except Google Voice SIP and Angry Birds)
Custom ROM also doesn't have the SE SMS issue when a draft exists, it crashes SMS with the keyboard out.
angry birds works on both cm6/7
also sms app doesnt crash on cm6 when keyboard is out.
which version are you using?
Well, from slade's CM7 post, the camera is stuck at 0.3MP, right? I mean, I will be paying for a 5MP one. Is it fully working on CM6? Cuz I don't really care for the radio or ANT, will not be using those for sure.
Yes cm7 camera is still bad. In cm6 which is froyo btw it will work.
Sent from my U20i using XDA Premium App
Your latest CM6 ROM is flawless, CM7 has bad camera, that's pretty much all I'd notice. So installing CM6 will give me 2.2. I guess that pretty much closes the deal, I guess I'll take your hybrid ROM and wait till CM7 is complete. CM7 is 2.3?
Slade CM6's ROMs (there's 2 flavours) are the most suitable for daily use IMHO.
The camera issues in CM7 prevent it from being a daily use ROM for me.
Almost everything is working perfectly in CM6... only bug i've found is when playing music for a while, sometimes phone crashes.
The great thing about playing with dev roms is that you can always revert back to your stock 2.1 backup (or any other backup) if you don't like it. So give it a try, if you don't like it, just revert back... takes a couple of minutes

Well, my previous phone was an HTC HD2 which I ran with an android nand rom. Although it was quite a machine I find myself happier with the mini pro, the key points being the hardware keyboard, better 5mp camera and better music quality. Low points are the tiny screen and that the mini pro is slower and also the inferior battery life. Still though, I dont regret the change one bit
I mean, maybe better phones feel better, but I guess I am one of those people that won't feel good without the physical keys. I've seen some differences in prices from shop to shop, I found it a little weird. Like, 20€. But it's okay.
And MT is being worked on, I think awsomeness is on it's way

I just notice that Mini Pro's keyboard perhaps seems to be too small but in real life it is flawlessly useable.
My second note is that: is OK for English only - special characters are pain in the @ss.
Third notice is that: HW keyboard usable only when You using phone "horizontally". In practice I using phone in "vertical" position and if want to type, I must to slide-out HW keyboard, type fast, then close HW keyboard and continue work in this comfort orientation.
If You type much SMS or e-mail, HW keyboard is a _must_. If You browse web-sites often in 320X240 and every time You visit totally different places, typing fast also would be good - but this is real?
For me, my any other uses in "vertical" orientation - so I almost no using HS keybouard
Considering I am Portuguese... I've looked around, special characters really are a pain, but I'll find a way.
I think I can combine horizontal and vertical, I don't really mind the little screen. Internet will be seldomly used, MSN and Skype mostly.
