PocketSpeedTest - check your cellular packet link speed or hotspot speed :) - Windows Mobile Apps and Games

Here comes the second version of PocketSpeedTest. In new version you may manage your own HTTP-file based mirrors, view speed chart (alpha only; has some problems with scaling), and other details.
The system requirements are:
- a Pocket PC Phone or classic one (e.g. if you want to test hotspots) based on Windows Mobile 2003 SE or newer; a WM5+ Smartphone should work as well but was not tested.
- .NET Compact Framework 2.0 installed on device (on WM6 devices preinstalled by default)
- any Internet connection on device (if no WiFi or Cable, a packet data connection is activated automatically)
Application should also run on a desktop PC if you have .NET Framework 2.0 installed (installed by default on Vista, in case of Windows XP, 2000, ME or 98 you'll need probably to install .NET)
This time comes with a cab installer.
Screenshot contains old version.

no interest?

nice app. how about speedtest in KB/s and not kbit/s? or maybe an option..
KB/s gives a better idea what most people see on a download prompt.
where does the program do, download a temp file from somewhere?

It downloads the file:
http://noc.gts.pl/1mb.gts
to nowhere (all operation is done within RAM, no storage is involved). Maybe I'll add KB/s as an option, I've used kbit/s because most speed-o-meters show speed in kbit/s.
The file is a GTS Energis provider file typically used to check your connection speed via download prompt.

yeah, kbps is ok actually. but options are cool
what about increasing test length?
i think it can be more accurate if you give it more time, the speedtest stops like 8 seconds after and there is no way i can download a 1MB file that fast unless thats one huge burst of bandwidth.
how much is actually downloaded, you stop the test before 1MB or does it download the whole mb?

It gets the whole 1MB unless you stop it yourself. Yes it may be short for high speed connections but I'm going to add larger tests.

i've created website speedtest apps in the past, it's almost the same.
i used php to test downstream and flash to test upstream from client to server.
what about your apps capabilities for upstream? good way to test RevA

Good tool, thanks kartam !

Awesome!
I've been wanting this for some time.
Would love it to record peaks, and support copy from the results window.

Great idea! I get a huge result difference with between this and dslreports mobile speed test (50% lower with this). Any thoughts?

This program also works in Windows XP if you have the .NET CF 2.0 installed

I see that some people report to have lower speeds with this application than they have for real. Seems strange 'cause my speeds seem also accurate. This shows that the app needs more development. I'll improve it maybe this weekend if I have time. But I'm glad that app got some interest This motivates to work! Every feedback is valuable for me, write how much the program showed you and how much it should (based on other test app), and what connection you've been using. That would help me improve

Actually .NET Framework 2.0 for PC (not compact) is enough Thanks for noticing, added to the first post
I think that DSLReports mobile inaccurate result may be because of DSLReports testing files are small (100 kB the largest one), and PST downloads a file of 1 MB

Thanks man! Very good tool, great work

Nice program, I look forward to testing HSDPA and hopefully HSUPA here soon, so look forward to the uplink test!

Are you sure that your app works correctly?
Because I've a 2Mbps Adsl line (250kb/s)... But, using my Touch connected to my router via wifi, your app displays an average speed of 384kb/s........
How is it possible?

I my case program shows half of max speed, on ADSL or WiFi.

it all depends on your location to the file that is being used in the speedtest.
if the speedtest file is located in japan and you're in australia you would get poor results from test.
it's a good idea to have a file hosted at various locations so a user can select the closest server to test from.

Good FTP client/app for HD2? Total Commander FTP 'faulty'?

Anyone know of a good FTP client (preferably finger friendly) for the HD2?
I'm only interested in FTP on my home wifi network, if that matters at all.
I used to use PadersyncFTP on my sammy Jet and i really liked how streamlined/basic and relatively finger friendly it was.
Thats only available for Java, Android and maybe Symbian I think.
I tried installing the padersync .jar but the (Java Engine/installer?) thingy just gave me an error and wont install.
Ive been using Total commander with some success, but its not *that* finger friendly and doesnt looks as good as padersync. I could put up with that BUT...
When I transfer a file from Laptop to HD2 or vice versa, The status bar (percentage transfered etc), stays at 0% until the transfer is complete then the status popup just dissapears, so I know its done at least
I can check the transfre speeds etc on the laptops filezilla interface but on the HD2 I have no way of knowing if the transfer is slow due to poor wifi signal etc, and I just cant live with not knowing how long the transfer is going to take (especially on big files).
So.... Does anyone know of a better alternative to Total Commander FTP?
OR.... Does anyone know of a fix for the 'status bar' problem mentioned above?
Any and all suggestions appreciated
WIFI remote access

Get it from the Marketplace. Free basic or cheap full version. Does a great deal more than FTP as well.

Thanks for the suggestion John....
But Ive already got the Free v1.0 of that remote access app (from the xda market).
Forgive me if im missing something obvious here but doesnt that app only let you access the HD2 file system from any web browser?
I need something which works the oher way i.e. I want to be able to browse and access/copy/edit the files stored on my laptop/notebook using an app on my HD2.
Hope that makes sense and that im not missing a function of the remote access app.
Cheers anyway.
Resco File Explorer has a ftp client built in and in my usage is pretty good. It doesn't have a resume feature or multiple files at once transfer but overall its stable and fast.

Main problem with total commander (for me) is the progress bars during ftp transfer. I could live with the non finger friendly version if the progress bars worked.
Thanks though.

How to limit upload speed in Android?

Really not sure if I am posting this in the right place, so apologies if that's not the case.
I like dropbox's Camera Upload feature, but quite often I find that it will saturate my internet connection and everything else on my network struggles. Especially if it is uploading video recordings off my phone.
Is there a way to place a speed limit to the data upload rate? Kind of like a bandwidth limiter for Android?

Many Android kernels got support for traffic shaping, so you can use the "tc" shell command to implement what you need. Maybe there's some rooted app able to manage this for you, since it's quite a tricky task.
But this is not such a good idea. Instead you should implement the traffic shaping in your WiFi/Internet router. If it doesn't support it native, I suggest you try some other software for it, e.g. OpenWrt, DD-WRT or Tomato.

I have Tomato installed on an Asus RT-N66U router, but the bandwidth limiting options only work for LAN connections and not WLAN it seems.
A rooted app that puts a limit on a per app basis would be something I'd be happy to pay for.

Hard to believe it's not working for WLAN connections, and even if so, you can apply the rules on the outbound Internet connection scheduling on source addresses. I.e. you can chose to implement the restrictions on either the receive- or transmit site. Do some more reading on QoS and I'm quite sure you'll manage to implement it as you need. But it IS tricky, even with the Tomato GUI, and would be as tricky as well using a rooted Android app.
And since I know it's not a such a good idea to implement traffic shaping in the Android itself, I'm not going to write this app.
Hey, I'm looking over internet for this exact thing, problem is my Galaxy Tab is hugging my internet, I need to limit it to say, 100kb/s up and down. My router is A-Link WNAP 3G router.
It would be even better to limit all WLAN traffic to 100kB/s because my computer is hooked with an ethernet cable :victory:
Can someone help me ?

You are very wrong that it isn't a good idea to implement traffic shaping. All new cloud applications have Camera upload feature which clogs the upload of the whole network and then you cannot even surf with your computer while photos are uploaded (not to say videos).
Traffic shaper would solve this things for sure! I would even pay for that app on appstore.
I used bandwidth ruler from the play store to limit upload speed in my galaxy SIII and it works like a charm. but that requires root to work ,
here is the link :

Dear Friend,
did you get what you was looking for?
because i am looking for an App which can control all or Each/ individual app to upload the files. likewise
google+ Google photos, Google hangout, Etc. which i hate the most to upload my photos . for them i have rooted my note4 and install AVAST Anti-Virus + Firewall to prevent the app to access the net .
Because i know what app we allow to access the internet they take away our personal information along with videos and photos which we don't know because our smartphones are 24/7 connected with DSL hight speed internet.
These type of Apps are fully controlled by the remote server to takeaway our data with minimum speed like 10KB to 30KB per mint.
I have already block the apps to access in the internet, but some reason i have to disable firewall, then most of the apps try to get updates, i need an app which can control /allow the app to upload in Bites not in KB or MB.
if you have something like that please advise
awaiting your reply
Thanks

A HUGE Alternative for WI-FI Direct

aren't most people angry and jealous from the xperia s owners who have the w-fi direct on there phone's white papers
well here's the deal....... Sony never actually made any to the xperia s:victory:
and now every one can get a VERY similar service and even better...... without any restrictions like being only able to transfer with this technology to the same phone model only.......etc so lets cut to the chest
here is what you gonna do:
1- download the app wi-fi file explorer pro
2- turn on wi-fi hotspot
3- open the app
4- connect the other device(phone,laptop....all works) to your hotspot
5- on the 2nd device's web browser type the address exactly as shown in the app with the port too
(like http://192.168.1.1:8000/ where 8000 stands for port) i also recommand using the fastest net browser on the device such as google chrome on pc and opera's small version (800KB) on android.................etc
congratulations you can now transfer files without a router or a usb cable and with speeds up-to 50 Mb/s on a non-wifi direct device

correct
the thing to notice too is when wi-fi direct first launched it was saying in the wi-fi alliance web site that this technology doesn't require any special hardware and also can connect to other devices that don't have this software
but now it seems to have change because of there marketing strategy
because if a simple programs such as AIRDROID and wi-fi file explorer pro can do it on any wi-fi device how could companies claim that this is a hardware required tech???

[Beta] Anyone can help us testing our beta product? An Android PC Manager.

Hi,
Sorry to interrupt here! I'm Sabrina from SnapPea. (I probably shouldn't made this other thread..) I've posted one thread at the APPS section in XDA about our PC manager, we compared some main metrics with Mobogenie. You can read this post to know more about SnapPea
The reason why I'm posting here is that, we know Micromax is a big brand from India, and we really want to make sure that SnapPea can work on Micromax devices as well, but we can't test on any Micromax devices here in Beijing. We actually tried to buy some from Flipkart but the order got cancelled, and we tried to have friends send some devices over, but the customs wouldn't let the package through...:crying::crying::crying: So I'm wondering, if anyone can help me test out our beta version? The download link is here (dropbox link, since it's in beta, we can't put it on our website).
BTW here is some main metrics comparison between SnapPea and Mobognie:
Package size
The package size for SnapPea is only 4.5MB
The package size for Mobogenie is 30.4MB
Installation time
It takes only 2.94s to install SnapPea on your PC (here is a video to prove)
It takes 6.87s to install Mobogenie
Photo loading time (tested on a phone with 2000+ photos)
SnapPea takes 1.25s to load pictures
Mobogenie takes 8.16s
×a word here: we have made improvement to the logic of content loading, which means the photos won't be necessarily loading from the top to the bottom, instead, we load where your eyes are at first
Contacts loading time (tested on a phone with 3000+ contacts)
SnapPea takes 1.48s to load pictures
Mobogenie takes 57.75s
Memory usage
SnapPea uses only 70MB when in use and 24.7MB when not
Mobogenie uses up to 146MB when in use and 70MB when not
As windows users, you must know how it sucks when some software takes too much memory...
Give it a try! I'm sure you won't be disappointed! And we are ready for the toughest feedback and willing to improve SnapPea the way you want it!
Thanks very much

It seems that you like to connect via Wi-Fi? May I ask why you prefer Wi-Fi connection than USB?
Btw our new beta version has even nicer UI Try it :highfive:
A simple reason
I dont have my usb connected to the px evertime and my front usb ports are dead and for me wifi is easier though a bit slow but it just does the work and i am not restricted to keep my phone at one place

OK, I got it (seems like we need to add wifi connection back for the new version) Just curious - what about other Indian users? Do most of you prefer USB or Wifi? At first we thought it has to be USB:silly:
USB has its own advantages though
Ex. better read/write
but still wifi lets me copy my files without much effort :v
only thing that craps me out that i have to put in the wifi passcode for connecting it

[GUIDE] Turn your Android device into a Cloud storage server

So, today im back with another guide, today ill be teaching you how to turn your Android TV Box into a personal Cloud!
A few of you may ask, why? Well theres a few reasons
1. These devices run off a 5v power supply
2. For the price they are, its definately the cheapest alternative to purchasing cloud space
3. For the specs, they are quite impressive
4. Not only can you use wifi, but these devices have LAN aswell
So for anyone who wants to do this, simply check out my youtube video, it takes a total of less than 2 minutes to set up(Deducting all my explaining)!
https://youtu.be/D_yPGkAmtII
Step by step -
1. Download and install SSHDroid on your device from the playstore or link below
2. Open the app, if the service is not started, click start at the top right, the status should change to ready
3. Download the setup server files i created from below and open the SetupServer.bat file
4. The script will prompt you for an IP address, in the SSHDroid app besides address you will see something like [email protected]:2222 your IP address is inbetween "[email protected]" and ":2222", in this case 192.168.1.109, type it in and press enter
5. You will notice 2 scripts are generated from that and a file, you can then run the CloudFileManager.bat or the CloudTerminal.bat depending if you wanna upload/download files from your cloud or do things within terminal
If you do wanna access the server from your device, you can download ESFileExplorer, open it and open the FTP tab
Click "add" and choose SFTP, then input the details that the script generated in details.txt
You can then transfer files between your phone and cloud!
Here are the files i said i would share for this
My setup server files - https://mega.nz/#!fUVQEK5L!57B2fs7qjI0-LhAUfWk014r90KzEJ-P4902Sfa6vZr0

I'd never even thought of that but been looking for an option of network storage. This could be perfect as I have a few spare boxes. I'll let you know how it goes
Okay got it mostly setup and can access via my desktop. Just trying to work out a way to make it network accessible to Kodi on my main android box. Same network of course

Definately a worthy solution to a cheap cloud storage
Any luck figuring that out?
I used Armbian+apache2(with PHP7.2)+Nextcloud server before but your cloud is runing on Android right? This is good idea. May be need a NAS drive like 2TB for storage. Android devices got poor wifi performance. I recomend LAN connection for cloud.

seems to be very minimal difference between WIFI and LAN, im guessing its using the hardware at its limit, i got 2.9mbps upload speed while the Beeting S1 was using an SSD as primary storage(apollo lake processor and 4GB RAM with Samsung evo SSD)
if i find a way to improve performance i will let you know, i just feel using TV box as a cloud server is a very efficient way of doing things for both the price, simplicity and flexibillity
My box has gigabit lan and I don't agree with you
There are good webservers for android that support php/database. I guess we can install Nextcloud. I'll try at my spare time.

What im saying is i think its a hardware limitation, the processors and the amount of RAM your device has will surely limit speeds(Upload/Download) somewhat.
I just have no idea what the limit is, but then again my internet is actual trash so you may be right, who knows

You need to open the port it uses in your modem or router. The use your external IP and the port to connect to it outside of your network. Password protect everything though to be safe.
P.S. can anyone reupload the files?
