New Rom Timeframe? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

I am currently running DCD 3.0.4 and considering upgrading to 3.1.2.
However, I have been reading that a new rom (diamond based or otherwise) is "around the corner".
From those who actually know:
What kind of timeframe are we talking about?
If you don't know anything specific, please do not respond to this post.
As always, thank you for all your hard work on behalf of us undeserving peons.

It'll be soon.
Patience is a virtue.

why do people have to respond like that.
It's rude, disrespectful, and annoying.
he wasn't being impatient. he was just curious.
I've done the same before.
By asking that question, he doesn't mean "hurry up" or "why isn't it ready yet"
he just wants to know, because flashing takes time (to backup and restore etc..) and obviously, he doesn't want to go through all that to flash to dcd 3.1.2, if dcd 3.1.3 is about to get released.
it's really pretty simple

WOW...I didnt find anything wrong with that anwser...In fact I thought it was rude asking that question in the first place..
"What kind of timeframe are we talking about?

Considering GCINCOTTA is a developer/tester in this community and contributes daily... I think your a little out of line here.
Considering when you flash a dcd rom...he will probly be the one helping you..or at least would have
A MOD SHOULD DELETE|CLOSE THIS THREAD ANYWAY SINCE IT HAS NO VALUE

I have to agree with your post - I was new to this only a month or so ago - without DCD and GCINCOTTA - I would never have even attempted doing this to my phone. Due to their help and tireless work/posting/etc, I have a phone that has working GPS, Fast internet downloads, software that I never would have even known about if not for them.
Like the 'OP, I am looking forward to their latest work, however, I can appreciate the time/effort/energy that goes into this and am patiently awaiting their latest release(s).
Due to their timeless help, I have experimented with several roms throughout this board and on other boards, but if they didn't start me off with their patient explanations, I might not have ever gotten to this point (or even known about this).
Thanks and kudos to the experts here that help out - they know who they are.

Holy smoke, no reason to get all butt hurt. the answer was polite and quite good. gcincotta knows how lame sprint is with their time frames and was just letting the person know to be a bit patient.
"feeelings......nothing more than feeeelings"

it has nothing to do with sprint, and their time frames.
he was asking about a new DCD release.
i'm not butt hurt, i've just seen these kinds of comments all too often.
yes, we're all grateful for DCD and all those that help in ROM dev.
I've seen a simple curious question get attacked (as though the attacker is somehow defending - and sucking up to - their idol, the ROM maker)
you get comments like "this guy does it for free, don't rush him, be grateful."
I agree entirely with those statements, but, asking an approx timeframe is just to avoid constant reformatting.
I personally don't care what the answer is, if it's "soon" or "a long way off" I don't care when it comes, as I know it's free. I just like knowing. (I'm sure we've all reformatted, flash, and got everything set up to see a newer ROM release 4 mins later. it's kinda annoying

wooooooah.. someone need to get layed.. calm down peepz we all equalz..

The point of the post was not to get people riled up. I am sorry.
The point was to calm people down and give them a concept of expectations.
We all know that if you think something is coming in 30 seconds and it doesnt come for half hour, you go crazy. If you think its coming in an hour, then you are surprised by the early release.
It's all a matter of expectations.
I only wrote
"If you don't know anything specific, please do not respond to this post."
so that I didnt get replies like "I'm sure it'll be any minute!" which would only fan the flames of people's impatience.
I did not mean to be impatient or ingratious. I just wanted to potentially save myself (and perhaps others) a few hours of time.
I thought it was relevant to the community when DCD (or others) are expecting to release an upgrade and I have still not, as of yet, received any form of substantive answer.

GC is a major tester for DCD and his ROMs. show some respect, he was giving you accurate information as a source.

accurate yes, but the OP asked for specific, if GC had said something like "i work with DCD on the roms, but neither of us can give you anything specific, but it should b soon" we probably would have avoided every subsequent post in this thread

agreed.
as far as 'accurate information' ???
he said nothing at all!

These people dont do this for a living...they have no deadlines or executives breathing down there back for a release...G was stating that i will be soon...like after the major bugs are addressed...There is no timeline....He could have lied and said tomorrow at 12:37 am

Tell me lies! Tell me sweet little lies!

Now watch it come out tomorrow at 12:37 am...lol...would be sweet if it did though

I thought the OP was a fair question because he wanted to know it he should flash dcd3.1.2 or wait for the diamond inspired roms. I though gc's answer was also fair. He said "it will be soon... (so).. have patience" i.e. don't flash dcd3.1.2 if it is a hassle for you because, with patience, the diamond inspired roms will come.
Now if you really want to have a laugh at people getting their hopes dashed by a missed timeframe you should check out the Athena Project thread. I had weeks of amusement reading that thread. And you know who they were flaming for missing a deadline? - olipro! yeah they guy who made it all possible was getting flamed because he got hammered instead of meeting a deadline. (For those who dont know, without olipros hard and soft SPLs we could not unlock our HTC phones and flash unsigned roms)
So to save themselves the flames and disappointments it is normal for dcd et al to say "soon" rather than "12.37am tomorrow".
As others have pointed out, these guys do this in their spare time, and with the wings in stanley cup finals, some of them are busy at the moment.
Now my 2c worth on the OP question. If you have dcd3.0.4 working well and you are happy with it, I would not see much reason to flash dcd3.1.2 just at the moment. I tried it and have since gone back to dcd3.0.4 and am very happy with it. Although I did flash and keep the new radio 3.39 but to be honest I don't see a great difference.

Um, I believe the OP said....

I would like to believe that common sense would have been applied when I responded.

I think my question was fair. I was, and am, being patient. I wasn't trying to be rude or obnoxious or ungrateful.
I think that GC was trying to be helpful, but his post didn't add anything useful as it ignored my request for something specific. Had he not responded at all, I would have known what I know now about the release date - namely nothing.
The great irony is that not one of you knew anything specific, yet you all replied to my post.
Thanks to maccaberry for the constructive input.

I'm afraid "soon" is as specific as it gets at the moment. When work is being done, there is no specific timeframe. Whenever it's tested and working up to standard, it gets released. I could have said something like...in about a week, though something could break in a week that puts if off for another two weeks. Then we'd have new threads and posts saying "I thought it was going to be in about a week..."

gc....you and dc etc. are the reason why meatheads like myself dont still use a rotary phone lol. keep up the good work and keep the good replies coming witt is often needed but not often understood.

HTC finally prints the truth...what's VZW gonna say now?

For months and months since I got my xv6800, I've been asking vzw reps, tech support morons, and WDTS people when OUR RevA/GPS software update will be released. Every time I ask I get the same response.
"Your handset is not EVDO Rev A upgradable"
"Your handset doesn't have GPS in it"
The HTC website never helped either because under specifications it never said anything about RevA capabilities, so I was forced to bite my tongue and just accept Verizon's stupidity.
Well HTC finally added it to their list of specifications. It's been like that for the Mogul and other Titan variants now for a while and now it's there for the xv6800.
http://www.htc.com/us/product.aspx?id=11150
What's Verizon gonna say now when I whip up that website and ask why the MANUFACTURER would list it as a capability if supposedly "my handset is not EVDO RevA upgradable?"
They'll be forced to look me in the eye and tell me the truth. They're too money hungry and lazy to step it up and get the software update going. They're too busy thinking up their next piece of **** application for Get It Now and developing new ways to screw their customers out of more money.
Granted I've had RevA and GPS working since the leak, but still...it's the principle!
/endrant
please let me know what they say when you call. I would love to hear it.
now, if they would only put something that says to some extent "upgradeable to 128mb ram" (one can hope...)
thanks
Please remember, you are talking to some lowly, near minimum wage customer service employee. Even if he wanted to give you a truthful answer, the truth is, he probably just doesnt know jack s***.
Save the effort and frustration, go with a custom ROM and live a happy life.

Who gives a ****? We know it's capable and to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't run their bloatware version of WM even if they released an update. Verizon sucks ass, we all know it. So why beat a dead horse?

I've spoken with people high up on the food chain before that actually do know a thing or two about this stuff. In fact, one time I spoke with a tier 2 WDTS rep who was intrigued when I informed him that it in fact WAS capable. I stayed on the phone with him as I directed him to these forums while he read all about it. He said it's bs that they're being told to inform customers that it's not capable after reading.

there are some things i want for vz that i can only get from a vz update.
carriers supporting their products is a good thing, whether you run their firmware or not.

Hence the comment "Verizon sucks ass, we all know it"
My point is why complain about something that is already known and established. I don't see you *****ing about Verizon. You know they suck, you wish they would support their hardware more, but you also know there isn't alot you can do about it. There has been so much put into the Titan community lately and yet people still *****. Sorry I just get tired of all the complaining done in these forums. I just think it's stupid to waste data space and a thread in this site to complain. I think everytime I'm unhappy I'm gonna start a thread just so I can ***** about it. You really need to learn to get a clue. In no way was my post "*****ing" or "complaining" about Verizon. I was merely pointing out that the times in the past when I was told certain things have come to an end because certain facts have finally been made public. If you can't see that then you need a lot of help my friend.
This site is for "technical data". What exactly is "technical data"? It's people like you that start the flames in these threads, not me. If you knew anything about this stuff you'd know that with carrier software updates comes updated radio roms, pri updates, driver updates, os updates, and more. Do you think these roms and kitchens just popped up out of nowhere? They magically created themselves? No, they came from official carrier releases and were extracted, cleaned, and tweaked. dcd and I have been looking for a solution for people to refresh their pri in case they accidentally let customizations run. A Verizon software update may contain something very useful in the extended rom that could help us develop it. I bet you didn't know that though right?
You've made it clear to everyone that YOU are the one who likes to "*****" and "complain", not me.

RE: Rev A and GPS
Both the HTC site and Verizon say nothing of being GPS capable, yet there are people using GPS right now through avaialbe kitchens.
I love verizon. I have gotten nothing but "great" support from them with all 19 of my phones. (Starting with MotoV265 (5) MotoV710(4) MotoE815 (1) MotoQ (4) Treo700wx (3) and finally my XV6800 (2) all in only 3.5 years)
On a serious note though, the reason that they won't release GPS for it is because they can't regulate its use very well on their system. Their other phones use VZNav on the BREW enabled phones but, as far as I know, our phones don't do BREW.
PS. Can I ***** and complain a little too here?

i just talked to a verizon tech suport rep, she helped me reset my data after messing it up.
but at the end of the call, i asked "i heard about this rev A thing...is our phone capable of that?" and she looked it up and said yes it is.
she also said she wasnt aware of any plans to do any kind of software update that would enable it, and she said she wouldnt know about it until it was released..
then just for $hits and giggles, i asked, what about gps. can this phone do that? and she said like for what? navigation? i said, yeh, for navigation, for google maps, something like that.
she said since google maps is 3rd party software, she wouldnt be able to tell me for sure if it would work. But i asked is our phone capable of gps?
and she said "yes, it is capable, but its not supported"
i guess that means since they dont have any software that could use it, and since they dont support 3rd part software, the can still say its capable, without actually enabling it on a stock rom.

You'd all be smart to switch to Sprint with your xv6800s. I think they'll let you do it. you may have to pay $100 to $200 to get out of your contract with Verizon. It will be worth it once your accounts are set up properly. Sprint has the worst customer service, but at least they are trying to get WM6.1 up. The GPS works great on the Mogul. Your xv6800 hardware is identical to the Mogul. You should be able to Hard SPL, flash a Sprint ROM, and then go in and get you phone set up on Sprint. Check this forum carefully for details and follow instructions carefully.

I agree with you. started with LG VX6000,8000, 8100, 700w 700wx and now this one XV6800...may some day they will tell me the truth and stop and do the right thing
Switch to sprint? Haha, the development community surrounding this phone is so immense that within hours after any carrier releases ANY update, it is ripped, stripped, and rereleased with unicarrier availability. I am running 3.49 on my xv6800, with radio 3.39, so..
Now, Sero is very, very appealing. $30 a month for unlimited Data is heavenly. I have free data due to some technical complications, but my family share plan with 700 minutes for 3 people costs more than 30 times 3.
Lmfao is it really going to make you feel better to take up the time of a rep that can't magically enable the gps function for you? Custom rom is the way to go, it's easy and you don't have to give anyone a headache in the process.
I swear, some of you are either illiterate, or just choose not to read certain parts.

[GEN] Why is XDA-Raphael Rom Development section ungrateful?

I'm a XDA lover
i love to flash ROMs
I'm greatfull to all the wonderful Chefs/developers/users/co-members at XDA
(mostly for the Raphael Forums as thats what i use-99% of times.)
But recently i've noticed that the Forums and developments here on this Forum is not SO lively and ACtive as it used to be i wonder why should that be the case...
I remember the time that there used to be ROM releases every other day but ow its come down to once or twice a week...and sometimes even longer...I've no grudge against any of the Chefs i'm totally aware of the fact that ROM Development ETC takes heck lot of time and effort ...But i feel that its not about the time its about the passion with which people respond to these ROMs they have kind of got dispassionate towards the ROMs and take it for granted and don't appreciate the work of the Chef...
I could be wrong absolutely wrong but this is what i feel.
I'm really sorry if you don't think so...
But i feel we should be greatfull to the DEvelopers/Chefs/Co-members here at XDA they are the ones who help us.
We should not take them for granted.
We should help a person who is in problem rather than thinking that someone else will ofcourse help him/her.
If we are good to people then only people will be good to us.
If we appreciate and praise a Chefs/developers Work then only he/she will be motivated to give us all something even better the next time otherwise he will feel he is just wasting time.
Show respect and regard people XDA is a wonderful place for all of us.
Thank you.
Please feel free to express your opinions.
I'm sorry if some one doesn't agree with me or dislikes this post.
This is not meant to offend anyone.
Thank you everyone.
To MODS: Please let this be here i need an opinion. But if it offends you or is unappropriate its upto all you wonderful people.
I've been coming here for a few years, and it seems as something gets more popular, the more it seems the people involved are less appreciative. I see a LOT of "dang, it's taking you forever to build this rom" or "it's got a bug and sucks, why can't you fix it" and that type of mentality. but on the flip side, some people draw that type of person. I've been using RRE roms for a long time. and while I've seen a few people piss in aruppenthal's post toasties, for the most part, most of the people who use his roms are very appreciative, and supportive.
I know some people won't agree with me, and I'll probably piss off a few people, but when you get this many people in 1 place, you are ALWAYS going to have dipsh!ts and idiots and the like. I mean we're talking about 250k active accounts here. think about a superbowl game.. 30-50k people and there are tons that get arrested, or beaten down cause they're drunk and stupid (or obnoxious) or whatever. I think we're doing exceptionally good here. a TON of people and most of them are nice, supportive and stuff.
Me? I love this board. it's what I consider home. (thanks ryan.)
I agree with u but what did u make so upset my friend. Its true that we have some a..holes in xda. But as jaguar says, u will always have them somewhere.
I still think the raphael area is still in pretty good shape, with helping people and being greatfull to the cooks.

I think the board activity is representative of a normal product life cycle.
There was growth and a lot of development as people flocked to the Raphael.
Now, we are in a decline as the next generation of devices are coming out.
Big words , What has to be taken into account is that a lot of the chefs are moving on the newer devices, like Topaz, rhodium and HD2. This is a cycle, this has happened to the Kaiser forums as well but that's still active as well. Now the time has come for fresher chefs to cook their ROMs and grow. Where there is a need there shall be new ROMs. I actually think the kaiser forums are more stable nowadays but I could be wrong.
On a side note I cooked and then gave it a rest because of the the amount of work it worked out to be to make sure new changes wouldn't affect stability. Aside from the work it is to create a kitchen and find the newest\best packages. The testing process it fairly intensive. I don't think any good chef can whip up a ROM from scratch with in less than two days of hard labour, and that's if their experienced.
Appreciation threads are always welcome I think

"Why is XDA-Raphael Rom Development section ungrateful?"
Unfortunately, nobody will visit this place if was happy with his phone.
So the facts are:
1) Everyone has a hope for better image (software)
2) The hardware has also many disadvantages
Even if the chefs make perfect images, the phone+software will be under the general
expectation of the users.
Personaly, i beleived the advertisements and the reviews of this phone and

Do you yell at the mechanic who is working on your car just because you bought a lemon? NO.
Do you take it up with the person from which you purchased the care? YES.
You seem to forget that XDA is not responsible for the design and marketing of HTC products. They are simply trying to get the most out of their devices.
If you are so greatly upset by the device, go get an iphone and quit complaining.

My thoughts exactly. I find this poster's posts annoying because of that.
The site is as it has been in the lifelines of devices. New devices come out, and people move on to the next best thing. I think it is rare that there is griping - though it happens everywhere. The OP might be misinterpreting excitement to see new things in new builds for griping.

I mean that most people are passionate here about seeing what's next, and what is tweaked on new builds. I flash multiple times a week still, and love to see what I will find on a new build.
I check here multiple times a day for new things to appear. I can see people getting vocal about wanting to see new cool things. "Where's build 23085!!!" is what I am thinking, but not to piss anybody off or push people. Rather,to want to simply get my hands on it to play.
Also, complainers complain. 99.99% of people are fine with things, but the couple of schmucks complaining may make it appear that most people are ungrateful.

Ah ! I see.
Sir i agree with you mostly on that.
Indeed newer ROMs and latest developments excite most of the people on this community, But I feel most of those people who download these ROMs/Programs/Developments and are so called "Flash-junkies" are taking things for granted as in i mean if they see a build 23081 they will try it maybe say its good, but it lacks this this and this... And then after a little while say please do this is 23085 please do this and this this are taking the fact for granted that the chef for sure will write a 23085 build without appreciating the effort he put in the 23081 build
In simple terms i mean is that they JUST demand with little or no apprecition of any sorts (i'm not saying that nobody appreciated anybody i'm saying this trend has crept in ....and there are a bunch of such people---> like the 4 people who said "they don't care about appreciation, they just want appreciation ! " that in my view is pretty ridiculous and then the Chefs should sell their ROMs rather than make it availible for anyone and everyone !
Anyways thats my way of showing appreciation and respect.
Maybe this will improve some people NOT that i'm trying to be a "Gandhi" and bring about a revolution at XDA. All I'm doing is just giving a matter a thought which might change the views of others.
Again i repeat NOT to offend/hurt anyone.
If you don't agree with me its absolutely ok.

Time Frame for CM7?

Once a phone is opened up how long does it typically take before we see custom roms like CM7?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Every phone has it's own dev. Who knows. It happens if or when it happens.
Is it possible to get an official CM7 and not just a port?

THERE IS NO ETA. IT WILL BE DONE WHENEVER IT IS READY
If you want it quicker do it yourself and see how its done

Off topic: That was the coolest video ever.
On topic I'm betting we will see some CM7 roms (very buggy ones) within the next couple weeks.
I was just over at their forums. I see an old post that was revived asking for an atrix version, but no other threads. so who knows...
Also when it is done on the At&t atrix, will international users be able to flash it when our bootloader is unlocked or will we have to wait for another port?
There's already a Tegra phone out in the wild running CM7.. oh wait i have one sitting right next to my Atrix. That should make it a decent bit easier to get CM7 working on the Atrix.
This thread should be deleted - the cardinal rule of CM is... do NOT ask for etas!!!!!!!!!! It will be ready whenever its ready...
Devs are working hard on that.
I believe these kinds of threads are VERY necessary...it reminds the devs that we are still wanting CM7...if nobody wants it nobody would post...so this is a way to push the devs....supply and demand =)
I'm not trying to step on anyone's foot, but i just don't understand why u guys get mad simply cuz a guy is asking for an ETA, you never know, maybe one of us may be almost done porting CM7...

So you mean.. you like having a waiter drop by your table every 5mins to see if you are done with your meal because there is a queue forming outside the restaurant? Because what you're saying is basically the same thing.
Devs are doing this on their free time. They are not obligated to do so and even less so to tell whiny little brats when they will be done with it.
IF they're done with it. THEN they're done with it. All this asking for eta will just piss them off and waste valuable time that could have been spent dev-ing instead of replying dumb posts.

Wouldn't it be MORE of a waste of time complaining instead of using that time developing? If people are asking for an ETA that means THEIR INTERESTED...if not, then it would be a big waste of time for you and many other developers investing time and money on something people do not want.
I'm a game developer and i go through the same issues as many developers have here. I don't complain from "potential" customers asking for an ETA...it's a little rude even though asking consistently for an ETA is even ruder. Remember those guys asking for an ETA may be donating money to the developer that completes the Rom, so why shun away the people that ultimately may pay for your living.
I'm pretty sure some and possibly most developers here have aspirations to do this sort of thing as a living; and if so, learn to deal with and grow up, you'll be asked for an ETA numerous times in the business world.
your analogy makes no sense to the topic. If i were you i would sit and think a little before saying the first thought that comes to mind.

I don't think majority of the devs here are doing this for a living, more for interest. I personally don't do any dev-ing so I'm not even sure if I'm right to say this but as a game developer, you yourself have admitted that it rude of people to consistently asking for eta.
But if I were doing this for my personal interest. It won't really matter if nobody wants my work. Because I would be doing it because I wanted to, not because I'm hoping to earn a living from this. I would be pretty god damn pissed every time people were to ask for etas especially if I didn't owe them anything.
Rather then to ask the devs to grow up and "deal" with it. Why not ask those people to simply sit tight and wait?
The analogy is apt, you just probably need a few more cycles to process it.
You mentioned that it is good of people to create these threads so that devs will know that there are still interest in porting over CM7. So similarly, would it be good if someone were to come over to your table every 5mins to ask if you are done with your meal because there are people queuing outside? Think it through. 1) People wants cm7 so they keep creating eta request threads. 2)people are queuing outside the restaurant so the waiter keeps coming over to see if you're done.
That analogy wasn't correct at all.
You've said yourself, they don't cater to us. They do it for fun and because they're interested. I'm a waiter, and it's our job to bother you. We're required to make you as comfy as possible during your dinner or lunch. We're required to get you whatever you need. Within a small amount of time while doing the same for other tables. Even if it doesn't look like you need anything we have to bother the crap out of you. Regardless of queue or not.
Devs are not waiters. They don't have to cater to anyone. But at least the devs will know that we're interested in their work by asking ETA's. I can understand if the whole forum was crying for CM7, but one or two people can't hurt anything, and biting their heads off and throwing bad analogies around won't help anyone.

Video is hilarious lol
Guys I know I am a newbie on this forum but come on... The OP isn't asking for an actual ETA, hes just asking the community if through past experience anyone has a gauge on how long it takes for a Cm7 port to pop up after a bootloader gets unlocked. How is this not a valid question?
Just like on any forum I am sure it is tiresome for the senior members to see the same questions being rehashed with different variables inserted over and over. At the same time however, his subject made it perfectly clear what he was asking for, why bother to even open this thread if you don't want to constructively answer his question?
All of you were new to the scene at one time try to remember that.
In my case I have been wondering the same thing, while I have spent plenty of time programming in .net languages I haven't done any work like this before so I am struggling to wrap my head around the steps needed to port a rom over. (might just dive in myself and take a look though!)
Anyhow guys my intention is not to offend anyone just remind them that we are all not of the same tenure in this android / dev world.

I'm Just Saying...

No Offense to Anyone in particular but I've been seeing Alot of threads Knocking Developers Roms... Now in My Opinion the Only way Anyone has the Right to say Anything is... If you can Cook your Own Rom up! Until then, Give them a Break guys there doing it for Free for Everyone to use!!!
good point. Many think rom development is like washing a car..little bit of this little bit of that..dry off. First build the damn car, test to make sure it runs...then wash it..and poeple still tell you the car is dirty!!! sheesh...
I have never personally knocked someone's work, but one problem I see are ROM "chefs". Not only do they know nothing about Android's framework, but don't know any programming language enough to write their own code. They are taking bits and pieces of other peoples work and pasting in, and calling it theirs', and calling it new. Hence the term chef. That really doesn't add anything to the community, it is also unethical in my opinion.
Testified.

This. Most of the XDA twelve year olds don't know that. The OP of their favorite colored ROM is a god like "developer" to them, when in reality they are just wizards at cut, copy, paste, zip, unzip, ASCII images, ****ty changelogs, etc...
I said most though, not all. And I agree, they all put hard work into it, so appreciate it or just stay quiet and move on.

I gotta agree with this. There's very little "development" happening, and a lot of "cooking" happening. We need to have two separate sections. One for actual home grown roms, and one for things made in a kitchen.
I don't eat copypasta
I'm okay with some of the cooks as they add another element to let users find more combinations of roms bc not all the ones hard dev'd have everything you want or sometimes you would like to add a certain customization from another rom.
Now as long as proper credit is given in the OP all is good. Android is open source and sharing moss is what its all about. I personally don't think you should even ask to use polar mode long as u give the proper credit to them to begin with.
The issue I have is when people cook a ROM and then give zero credit to anyone claiming they did everything.

Well its hard to say good rom to someone if their rom is buggy. We have to post feedback and let them know if there's any bugs. Not to be harsh and say your rom sucks but to say this, this and this doesn't work.

agree. this is another reason why chefs are kinda annoying. they can't really provide support on a rom because they didnt make it. and with all those things pasted in it's harder to find whats making the problem.
ummm... i haven't seen one thread on here created to specifically slam or complain about a rom.
BUT that being said, i still have seen a lot of complaining about other crap... it gets old. there is no purpose in starting a thread simply to complain. it contributes nothing to anybody else.

Yeah, I agree. Open source is fantastic, and frankly as I see it nearly everything should be open source. But like you said just because we develop something and open the source to be read, used, improved, etc does not mean it is at all ok to call it yours, or take my license agreement, or source citing out so you can be the cool developer who took features from 5 roms to give people what they want. That is no different than stealing my patio furniture that is left out and I let other people sit in, ****ing bastards!
The thing with open source, if I can use an analogy to describe my thoughts and personal feelings:
Scientists will study and develop experiments that help prove something or develop a new technological process, or invent something new will keep things to themselves during the initial startup but soon after the entire community knows what they are working on, their journals are made public, their papers are published to be critiqued, reviewed, improved upon. Sources are always made to stay, and credit is given and kept through every part, and every future discovery. If we didn't have this technological advances would be slow as balls.

agree. this is another reason why chefs are kinda annoying. they can't really provide support on a rom because they didnt make it. and with all those things pasted in it's harder to find whats making the problem.

Another perfect point. How do you support and fix bugs if it isn't yours and have no idea what you are doing?

BUT that being said, i still have seen a lot of complaining about other crap... it gets old. there is no purpose in starting a thread simply to complain. it contributes nothing to anybody else.

Don't kid yourself. All it takes is roughly 20 minutes to set up and build your first ROM. It requires no skill, no college degree, and no unearthly talent. Virtually anyone could do it.
While it does take a bit more knowledge to port things over, the end result is always lackluster and very much lacks in the "I_need_a_working_stable_phone_where_all_things_included_with_it_actually_work_as_described" category. There's nothing more annoying than needing your phone at a particular time only to discover that one of a few things are happening:
-your phone has managed to lock up
-your phone is in the middle of a random reboot
-your phone has a missing feature that doesn't work because of the ROM you're using
I suppose all the ridiculous disclaimers (who's seriously going to go after a person for not having one?) try and warn you, but the cute taglines trump the disclaimer anyway.
There are few development projects going on. However, there are plenty of "let me try and frankenROM a bunch of crap together, throw it into a cute thread with a tagline indicating that it's a work in progress and that there are nightlies."
Judging by the number of replies these threads get, you can deduct the following:
-the average person on XDA doesn't have a smartphone for it to work properly.
-the average person on XDA enjoys interacting with other people on a thread even though it's mainly a bunch of back and forth replies that are limited to such wording as "yeah, ___ is broken for me too", " _insert_app_here doesn't work properly and fcs a lot"
I don't know about you, but I'm not the average XDA person and I most definitely enjoy having a working phone, so with that said--Stock ROM with modifications is all that's required to satisfy me.
To be honest, there isn't anything exciting going on aside from chad's kernel development.
This is not directed at any one person, and the true developers know that this isn't about them. Quite frankly, we need this type of work going on because it pushes the envelope and tells companies like HTC that we won't settle for less and know damn well that it's possible to push our phones further than they would have us think. Which is why sometimes, HTC gets caught with their pants down and are forced to give in. EVO 4G fps fix anyone? So I do appreciate all types of work that goes on here at XDA. But there will always be a small percentage that are in it for the internet fame (and they seem to get it quite frequently) and really bring nothing to the table except a bringing together of various other people's works.

OaT's Light n Tasty - the master Chef! R.I.P :(

Just a quick note of thanks to OaT for his superior builds and the sadness he's now discontinued them .
I was first in line of the hungry hoards who insatiably devoured every mouthwatering release - from LnT_Beats to Linaro experimental builds, and to my shame never got a word of thanks or feedback out to the master chef! Unfortunately this pattern of general behaviour I believe contributed to the demise of this coveted build.
I tried a number of times to feedback on OaT's threads but was blocked by forum rules (hadn't hit the 10 x post threshold) and frustrated by this it was easy not to make the effort and feedback on this fine ROM. Apologies for this!
Nevertheless, OaT releases won't be forgotten, and my sincere thanks for his superb efforts on a thoroughly enjoyable and expert release.
Cheers,
P
I'm going to get eaten alive for saying this, but I think the whole quitting due to not receiving thanks was a bit childish... He knew people liked his ROM, mostly by the number of people he knew downloaded his ROM... If he wanted to quit for personal reasons then whatever, that's all good, it's his life. Just, I don't really get the importance of a thank you button on a message board.

Certain people just get a rush out of being able to show other devs how many "thanks" they have. It's the same as like-whores on facebook.
He wanted feedback on the ROM as well, not just thanks.

What bananagranola just said is the biggest reason the man pulled the ROM.... Just as most users here are too lazy to search before asking questions... they're too lazy to fulfill the development request for feedback so he can make the ROM that THEY like using better... and those same people whining about the links being pulled are the same ones that conveniently forget to remember that's why he pulled links... not for the THANKS but for THEIR lack of ability to provide a simple request
For anyone with several devices can see... this is happening all over xda... the devs are tiring of the leeches that download and then simply whine and complain when things aren't all roses with their devices

I said my thanks, and never complained. I didn't provide much feedback, because to me, it just felt like complaining and I knew I didn't have that right. Oh well, water under the bridge now... RIP touchpad for now. These days remind me of when bumblebee stopped supporting lg v500. Development died for months and I ended up selling the thing due to it.

Is the TP on its last Android leg?
It doesn't bear discussion as to the "why" OaT took down the ROM. It was a personal decision made by an individual for whatever rationale he/she determined was in their best interest to have a happy life. I have to respect that if I want others to respect my discussion and decisions as well. Many thanks for the time and effort that OaT put forward, but I'm not sure where to go from here.
The TouchPad isn't going to move forward. It's a static technology that HP as a manufacturer isn't going to come back to. At least not in its current incarnation. HP is coming back to the tablet world - just not at this moment, and not with WebOS. If you read the news, HP will be back in this space with Win 8 and tablets in the future.
Tech doesn't stand still, and as people's interests change on a non-standard / open sourced product - it's lifecycle is only determined by the people able to move it forward, and the demand people are placing on a limited supply item.
Reading the writing on the walls, the HP TouchPad is reaching the end of its (Android) life - for better or worse. Now it's up to those of us who own the TouchPad to determine just how long to hang onto it before moving on. Do you settle on a latest release of CM9, or hope that someone pushes CM10 forward and gets audio, HD video and all the other bells and whistles to the point of CM9? (Let's just all assume the camera is the great white whale for devs.)
It's only after the death of an artist that the world mourns their contributions. With OaT dropping out - I don't know where to put my focus. I don't know which devs are still around working diligently on CM10 versus the crew working on CM9.

I'll try to make it official and clear here. The primary reason for me discontinuing development and pulling the links was the lack of feedback on the new Beats Audio in the new LnTBA. I don't have the hifi sound equipment to test that, and with 60 year old ears that are only able to hear middle range sounds, I'm not sure even if I did I would be able to tell if the new BA was an improvement or not.
The lack of feedback when specifically asked for, even initially when I asked for testers when I began to consider publishing the ROM, has been a real disappointment. In fact I initially expanded my testers list from ~20 to ~40 because of people asking me to 'please' let them test and 'promising' feedback. In the end I got at most a handful of thoughtful responses.
So in this last round where I requested feedback on LnTBA, I set the bar pretty low the day I posted it; I told myself if I only got 1 response when the download count reached 100 or more that would be enough, understanding that not everyone flashes as soon as they download. Ultimately there were ~250 downloads of LnTBA within ~24 hours of it being posted. Still, there was not one response, "none, zero, nada"!
In regards to the lack of folks hitting the "thanks" button, it should be obvious that if that were the real reason to discontinue development I would have stopped publishing the ROMs long ago.
Let me end on a somewhat positive note saying I do not know if or when I will restart publishing, after all the thread says "discontinued" and not for example "abandoned" in the CM sense. But rest assured development on my end for TPad is certainly still continuing. In fact I had the first bit of progress on sound for JB last night/today.

OaT, that's awesome!
I do respect your decision to pull your ROMs due to lack of feedback. It goes back to something I say almost every day... If I don't know there's a problem, I can't fix it. I'm trying to get my 10 posts in so, hopefully, when/if you do make another release, I am able to provide input in the dev forum.

This is unbelievably great news. Many people like your Roms and have great experiances with them. As you said I don't flash right away. i dont have alot of time to play with my touchpad so when I get around to it, all the issues that I have seen are usually already posted. Plus I'm not a heavy user of so I dont see many of the issues.
As far as Beats Audio, I've only flashed it on my LG revolution and it made it worse. Otherwise if a Rom has it in it for the touchpad I haven't noticed. I also don't use audio that much. I'm basically explaining that I do like your ROMs but i think my feedback might not make an impact.

OaT,
I was out of town during that release (in Alaska, no internet), and I don't use BA at all, ever. I think it's a gimmick. I will say that your 829 build is amazing, and probably the best OS I have used on any tablet ever.
I don't agree with your decision to pull all your roms. It IS your decision, but I know hundreds of TP users out there (most probably lurkers that don't even post on XDA) have benefited from your superior roms, and it seems like helping people in the future (or even just currently) would be the "right" thing to do.
Thank you for:
A) Your roms
B) The explanation of your sudden disappearance
C) Giving us some hope for the future
D) Continuing your development
I can understand your frustrations about testers. Doing a bunch of work and not getting feedback can be a real drag. I'll try to be more vocal in the future. Hell, I'll start right now.
The 829 build is GREAT. The battery lasts forever. I have been getting occasional FCs here and there, in particular the holo launcher is DOA on this build. Apex works great (as usual), I don't really like GO launcher. I think it's kind of a mess. This is my daily driver now because the battery is so much better than the 819 JB build. Google Now voice input doesn't work at all for me (using OaT gapps 429). The rest of Google Now works great.
Feel free to let me know if you need more testing with something specific, but don't expect it too quickly. I'm married, new baby, play in a band, and have a full time IT job. I will get to it late at night on Thursdays or Sunday afternoon though, if I can.

I for one am guilty as charged in the "no feedback" issue, my bad. I've used and enjoyed your roms and most definitely should have participated in helping squash the bugs. Sorry buddy. On another note though, the stupid rom is just so damn solid I really had nothing to say I would kinda feel like a whiner if I mentioned the occasional fc. I am still amazed that this old webos tablet can even run android, let alone run it well.

I. for one, could not leave feedback because I didn't have enough posts. They should remove this requirement from the forum because I think many people can't leave feedback because of this requirement. Some people (including myself) don't like posting random comments to increase their posts and want to get to the point.
Regardless, thanks for everything you've done so far OaT.
Sad to see that on a weekend when I don't check up on OAT thread I miss out on an update. As far as beats feedback goes off the top of my head I ran with the beats build of 7/06 and 7/29. Before that I ran the standard version of 6/03. On a whim I switched over to the non beats version of 7/29 and never looked back. I believe I stuck to the standard version of 7/29 because overall audio clarity seemed to be better on the standard. Easiest way for me to say that is at equal volume the standard seemed louder? Again this was from memory, the testing was conducting in the best setting, and I wasn't trying that hard. In all honesty I think what I was trying to see if there would be a significant difference between the two and if there was I would keep my preferred version. Since I'm running the 7/29 non beats still I assume I found no significant difference. I would like to add that I found no difference even in webos with beats on or off.
This is too little too late, but this has been my personal experience. I used Audio Technica CKS77 iems. Thank you for all you have done OAT, your light n tasty philosophy was something I really appreciated when I was looking at roms and was what made pick your rom first. I never bothered to try the rest

I second that. And the "thanks" button does not show until you make your first post. I went crazy trying to find it.
It's just sad that I never cared for oat's roms until now that he disappeared. I also don't think it's fair that a small portion of people were able to download the latest build and others were not. In case someone has the latest build and it didn't break any rules and disrespect the developer then please share.
