[Update 6/16] Titan Bootsplash Cooking Tutorial - WIKI - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

Updated 6/16/08:
-Created bootsplash kitchen along with instructions.
-Included information about flashing via microsd card.
Little background on Titan boot sequence for those who don't know exactly what this kitchen/tutorial does:
Many confuse the term "ROM" with the OS ROM. The term "ROM" has been used so often in conjunction with the OS ROM, that it's become jargon. When one refers to the "ROM" he/she usually is referring to the OS ROM. The ROM is the read only memory that can only be altered with a firmware flash. In actuality, there are 5 parts that make up the total ROM.
1. SPL - Bootloader
2. Radio - GSM or CDMA radio
3. First Splash - Splash screen that shows Protocol, Rom, and Radio versions.
4. Second Splash - Splash screen after the Protocol, Rom, and Radio versions disappear.
5. OS - The OS, a.k.a. what you flash when you cook a rom with dcd's kitchen etc.
This is how we're able to flash the bootloader, radio, OS etc. separately. You notice this more when you flash with the microsd card. When the bootloader loads and checks the image, it tells you exactly what part of the ROM it is. If you're flashing the OS, it says OS. If you're flashing the radio, it says CDMA (type of radio the Titan uses).
The Titan has either 3 or 4 boot splashes depending on whether or not you use a startup animation. The first 2 are part of the ROM. The 3rd and 4th are the startup animation (if included as part of OS ROM) and the welcomehead splash (Windows Mobile splash, which can easily be changed without flashing anything by copying/pasting your image of choice named welcomehead.96.png to \Windows on your phone).
This kitchen cooks the First and Second Splashes of the ROM.

Enjoy!

Awesome - Thanks GC!!

Nice. Will try later on.
"Below is a guide to cook a tiny ROM which will only flash your bootscreens. Flashing it will cause a hard reset, but will leave your current ROM intact."
So people would read!

Hey GC - This is the same error I got the last time I tried to use this tool.... Hae you seen this, and what does it mean??? I clicked on the nb_image_converter.exe and then these 2 boxes popup.....

Whoa wtf... this program has NOTHING to do with BuildOS. Do you have PPCGeeks BuildOS installed or something?

Yes, but why would it look for that?? This program is a simple executable??

No idea... try to completely uninstall PPCGeeks and see if it still pops up.

Thats the damdest thing..... Uninstalling the ppckitchen and the nb tool runs FINE.....

Haha, well no real reason to have it now anyway right?
You testing this out? If so let me know how the tutorial was and post up your bootsplash!
That goes for everyone, I'd like to get some feedback on how it goes. It seems like a lot of steps, but once you master it, it takes like a minute tops...screw using ppcgeeks kitchen for this.
Also, if you'd like to share your bootsplash, post it up!

Ok - Works great.... I did however make a batch file so that it's just easier to click on it instead of using a DOS box, lots of people may have an issue finding the folder they saved the images in, and it autostarts Duttys.... I can AIM it too you GC....
Here's my screen.....

GC14, was just wondering... You say that there is no way around the hard reset. Well if i remember correctly, quite a wails back, in the 3.27 Leaked ROM era, when i would flash my mogul with the leaked ROM, was the first time i got that annoying "Test purpose only" Boot screen flash.
Well my attempt to change it was to use the official Rom before this, by doing the SD card method, and only wait for it to say Finish flashing bootscreen, and i would reset the device immediately, to prevent any corruption.
This method indeed changed my boot screen splash, and nothing else, and it didn't hard reset anything.
So shouldn't anyone be able to just place the .nbh file into a SD card, and let it just flash the boot screen that way?
I'm only saying.. i actually haven't tried it, since i did it the long way anyway.

I've never tried it. I simply said there's no way around the hard reset if you use the RUU. First and foremost, if people are going to try it, they have to rename RUU_signed.nbh to TITAIMG.nbh. If you want to try it and let me know, go for it.

Thanks gc14 (aka gcincotta ) for the tutorial. Worked great...now to play with some different splash screens!

Just to be clear this will hard reset the phone but will not erase the ROM. This means all contacts, programs, settings, etc... will be left intact?

great tutorial! worked like a champ! Thanks!

Does the microsd flash have the same issue as others where it has to be a smaller card? Sorry for not being more specific. I haven't looked too much into that issue as I don't have a smaller card, I'm a 4gb microsd.

Flashing via the microsd card is the same whether flashing rom, radio, or bootsplashes. Non microsdhc card, formatted to FAT32, with cluster size less than 4k.

Which splash screen is this? The Windows one or the (on DCD Verizon) the white verizon screen?

Damaged Extended ROM - no boot

Tried the last build of SK Tools to benchmark unlocked Extended ROM. It hung in the middle. After soft reset, the phone hung on the HTC splash screen, WM splash will not show up. Hard reset restored phone boot, but unlocking the Extended ROM leaded to the same hang.
I've downloaded a version of my ROM, and, using the tools and instructions from Wiki, extracted extended ROM nb, and created an NBH containing only Extended ROM. Flashed it using SSPL from MicroSD. Then restored the latest backup and the phone is up and running again!
All was done using Windows 98SE computer, so no ActiveSync working.
So, this is one more reason why phone may hang on HTC boot screen that is not in the Wiki.
I just wonder what does the number (700 to replace 900) in the text file to pass to nbhgen mean, but it work.
I had a similar thing, the phone hung whilst writing something to extended ROM. It would then not go past the HTC splash. Like you, i got a bit nervous when i realised this wasnt addressed in the wiki!
I took a slightly different approach, using mtty.exe and 1.01mfg bootloader to flash a new extended rom to the appropriate address. Let out a real cheer when i saw the windows mobile splash appear!
Could one of you add this to the wiki perhaps?

Header type for ExtROM inside NBH file is 0x700 for Hermes, 0x900 for Trinity.

Would love to contribute!
But which section? This isnt an upgrading problem per-se... its more to do with writing to the Extended Rom and dramas which arose because the phone hung whilst doing so.
That section could be renamed to something more generic, although I'm not sure that's a good idea. For now, you could just add it in there, it's possible to come up with a reason for it being an "upgrade"
OK, ive put it on the problems page, under "other problems".
Have never edited a Wiki before, please feel free to dress it up a little (i.e. i dont know how to turn words into links to other wiki pages, nor do i understand how formatting works etc etc).
Cheers
Martin

Help!!! Mogul Stuck On Splash After Radio Upgrade

It Seems Like Im Not The Only One To Have This Problem, I Upgraded The Radio Version To 3.27 (the New One) And I Couldnt Find The Hard Spl 2.40 Olipro Since Ppcgeeks Is Shut Down, And I Crossed My Fingers It Would Work And To No Avail....stuck On Splash Screen, Cant Run Sprint Rom, Or Any Other Rom Because It Doesnt Load Up To Be Able To Sync

Well when i first tried to install it didnt really work because i didnt use the newest bootloader. I dont think its going to work for you either unless you use it. I would just go back to the stock rom/radio and use then install the newest boot loader/unlocker, then radio, then gps rom.
But if you want to try, your going to have to get a sd card, format it to fat32 then put the .nbh (the largest file in the rom download) file on the card, but name the file TITAIMG.nbh. Then put the phone in boot loader mode (hold camera, power, and reset)
When the phone starts up this time the bootloader will load that .nbh file to the phone just as if you had done it through active sync (close).
You can use this for anything really. If you want to go back to the stock rom, download the rom exe from htc's website and extract the .nbh file with a program called zipscan. If you do this you will be back to stock everything except maybe the BL im not really sure if.
If you want to try the newest rom (which most likely wont work since your not using the newest hard spl) just take that .nbh file and name it TITAIMG.nbh and put it on your sd card and put phone in boootloader mode and it should copy that image.
I tried to explain the best i could just ask if you have any questions.
for the life of my i cannot see why people cant search for a problem before they post about it.

Did you try to hold down the power/camera buttons and do a soft reset to try and get back to the bootloader screen?

This worked for me too!!!! Simple too. You can extract the .nbh file using winrar too.
And to comment on why people don't search for answers first before posting.....
I read everything I could before trying all of this out. My computer experienced the BSOD in the middle of the relocking process. The above listed methos was the only way that I could get my device to work. And yes, I asked the same question that hb1774 asked. I had read about this method in another post, but everything is so spread out and very new to me and a lot of people. Lets try not to be sarcastic. People come here to learn and hack. I know a hell of a lot about computers, but I'm not Yoda, so I'm going to need help. Until there is a well organized post with a solution to every issue that comes up, there are going to be repeat questions. If you know that it's a repeat question and you know where the answer is burried in the forum, why not post a link to the answer? Just my 2 cents worth.

flash

Before I flash my phone for the very first time, I need to know some things.
I know there are threads who give info, but they aren't always up-to-date or handeling about my phone.
So I want to know, I heard about a third version of HSPL.
What are the things that I need to do?
If I want to install a new rom, I first install HSPL, then the rom, but do I have to install something like a radio too? or something else?
Will a custom rom always work in my language (BE/DUTCH),
and which rom is good for texting (no lag etc).
I want a clean and smooth rom, with not much BS. Any advice?
I know it's a lot of questions, but I'm stuck with them for a long long time and I want to be well prepared.
Version of OS: 5.2.21869
Manila: 2.5.19211619.0
ROM: 1.66.404.1 (76641) NLD
RADIO: 2.06.51.07
Follow this thread step by step and you cant go wrong.
Its link you to HSPL3 and anything else you might need.
It tells you how to flash a radio (if you need to).....
It will tell you which radio you need in the thread for the rom your going to use....
You just have to read through all the rom threads to find out which one is going to be best for you...... I'd reccomend energy roms... I think they might only be available in english though. Different languages available will be listed in the rom thread...
The flash only takes 10 minutes...its the reading up first thats the time consuming part....
Hope it all goes well for you
thanks for the advice, I will follow it and read everything 10 times before flashing anything

So here are the steps that I'm about to take: (first off I saved all my data, sms, etc elsewhere).
1) flash HSPL 3

My ROM is 1.66.404.1 (76641) NLD, so it seems that this is okay to do. I think I have the 'usualleo', can I check this somewhere?
When I look into RAM SIZE, it says 512 MB, and I don't know what telstra is, but I definitly won't need the last one (1024). I also think in HSPL itself, I need to choose 2.08.HSPL.
Next, I'm about to flash my first custom rom, and will follow the steps given here:
Flashing Via ActiveSync
1. Download your prefered Rom from the LEO Rom Develpoment Page and unzip/unrar it to your computer
2. REMOVE SIM and microSD CARDS!! (this is a precautionary measure and is not compulsory)
3. Turn phone back on and wait until it syncs with your PC
4a. If your Rom is a .exe (customRUU.exe is already included in the Rom file) then run the file
4b. If your Rom is a .nbh file then run the CustomRUU.exe from the Roms Folder (if one isnt included then download it *HERE*)
5. Follow onscreen instructions to set up your New Rom
6. Once phone has gone through the customisation procedure then replace Sim and microSD Cards
7. Perform a Hard Reset to clear any leftover data from your previous Rom (see intructions at bottom).
8. Set up phone as required and job done.

I really can't find what ROM I should use..
I want a rom with landscape built in and the sms client 2016.
Are there much roms which include this?
yea thats all OK, except you dont really need to remove sim and sd. Only if you're stroubleshooting.
Plus, most cooked roms support 'autoinstall', , , create a folder on your sd card called autoinstall, put in there any cabs that are essentials, and the rom will install them as part of the post flash setup process.
as to which rom for what, thats gotta be down to you. Theyre all good, theres no such thing as a best rom, and what works brilliantly for one person makes the next person weep with frustration.
Flashing only takes 5/10 mins, you can try out a dozen roms in an evening.
Dont forget you only need apply hspl once. It will stay there till you either flash a stock from sd card (dont do this, theres no need nowadays) or you can run hspl2 (yes, hspl2) and choose your stock spl (1.42.0000 or 1.66.0000 or whatever)
can I run HSPL 2 after I firstly installed HSPL 3 for the custom rom I'm about to choose? And I'm guessing roms come packed (7z/zip/rar), need to unpack those files I guess? How do you actually start cooking a rom?
edit: I also gonna remove everything (hard reset) before I start flashing anything, so I start clean
Okay this is coming really close now:

Download Artemis 23.0 level A NLD (this I'm about to use)
I'm gonna go with artemis, but I also want a higher radio version. should I update my radio or my rom first? And how do I know which radio is compactible with that rom? the ones adviced in the rom? http://www.pilotlogic.com/artemis/htc_hd2_radio/ these?
I'm a bit confused what steps to take, in which order.
I know I have to HSPL first, (gonna use HSPL 3)
but then I doubt which to do first, rom or radio. And is it easy to install? Can I make any mistakes on this? what are the things that need special attention? thanks in advance guys, for all the help!
doesn't matter which order, except if you do rom first your phone will hang till you enter bootloader and flash a matching radio so most people say radio first.
heres how i'd do it
1 hspl3 (only needs doing once, not every time you flash)
2 enter bootloader manually
3 flash the radio
4 when it gets to 100% and is about to reboot, hold down voldown to go back into bootloader
5 flash the rom
6 allow phone to boot properly

Help! Broke phone :/

... I knew messing about with ROMS would do this one day..
I Started to flash the 3.14 (I think) update from the HTC site this morning, I realised after I started HSPL would get in the way of that...
SO now it loads to the coloured lines screen, I tried coping a image to the SD card to flash straight from that but I cant get it to search the SD card. All I get when I hold down the power and volume button is a "loading" message for a split second, then nothing else!
Help! Any ideas what I can do now?
Thankyou!
Ok, so I can now get it to read from the SD card that there is a image there - but it just sticks at "loading"
Ideas?

2 Options.
Previous flash has gone wrong, so reflash the rom you was flashing using sd-card (also check on what SPL you are).
Get a goldcard and reflash any other stock rom.
SPL-2.08.0000
Is whats on the screen, previously it said HSPL so I think one of the roms may have been successful enough to change to SPL... But im guessing this is bad now as it wont flash again from the SD card!

This updated it to 2.08.HSPL

Thanks,

you'll need an updated radio for nand android or wp7 (each has its specifics - see threads).
but what wm rom won't matter, as well, it will be erased
no limits. if you have hspl you can flash any compatible rom, etc.

htc HD2: I want to switch from Android build to WM.6.5 , no guide on forum.......

I installed android and it sucks, it reboots all the time, apps are useless, there are of course more things that made me want to switch but i dont want to go into details.
i almost turned my phone into brick when i installed android so i just want a step by step process on how to go back to windows mobile 6.5, and what version is recommended for best performance.
Ok I sugest going back to the stock ROM for your HD2 as you can flash it via SD card anx make everything stock with ome flash. But if you want to go with a custom ROM I suvedt any oc the Energy ROMs they are great. You can flash either of the ROMs via SD card or just put your HD2 into bootloader and wait for Serial to change to USB in the white bar of bootloader and then flash the ROM of your choice. If you flash via USB with official ROM it willnot revert your HSPL to SPL bit via SD card it will. Here is a link to tbe thread on how to flash via SD card.

Fist off make sure not to confuss putting your HD2 into bootloader and preforming a manual hard reset. To hard reset you have to power on and hold both volume down and up buttons down and the tricolored bootloader will appear for a brief secound but then another screen with instructions will appear. To put it into bootloader just power on holding down the volume down button and you will get tbe bootloader.
Flash the radio you want either before or after you flash the ROM. It really does not matter wich it will still preform it's function the same. I suggest radio version 2.15.50.14 as it is the latest radio version. You don't just have to flash another radio though if you don't want to. I say if you are not having problems with your current reception then your current radio should do fine. You can flash the radio tbe exact same way as the ROM using your SD card. Just rename the .nbh file for the radio to leoimg.nbh and copy it to your SD card. Or you can flash it via USB cable and your computer by using bootloader.
I checked out the link you posted. To download the zip file for the ROM you have to lick on the appropriate download link with the flag that applies to you. Let the page fully load when you go to the first page of the thread and look for the download button links toward the bottom of post #2. You will have two zip files to choose from I would say go with the largest of the two files as it will probably be the one with the start button at the bottom of the screen. I can not be certain of this though as I have a TMOUS HD2 and can not flash the ROM to check.
thanks for the reply, but i turned my phone to a brick yesterday before i read your post, turned out i didnt install HSLP (or something like that) which you need for installing new roms... immediately i went to a shop to get it fixed and luckily they had software that erased everything and installed original software
Glad you got your HD2 up and running again. I was wondering though if you checked to see if you could still get the bootloader to come up by holding down the volume down button down while powering on? Reason why I ask is you said.

I think when you flashed the custom ROM with out HSPL it ran a task 28(it is some debate wich is bett3er task 28 or task 29) before trying to flash the ROM which removed the current ROM from your HD2 leaving it ROM less. If your HD2 was truly bricked the place you brought it to would have had to disassemble your HD2 to get the main board out so they could use a JTAG on it. For that is the only way to revive a truly bricked HD2. So you see I am afraid you paid someone for something you could have done yourself. But the whole point was to get your HD2 up and running again so it is probably worth it to you. Peace
i've read what needed to be done in my sitation, and i ran into a big guide with some info about a program i needed to have fo 30 euro, it was then when i decided to go with the shop.
i had a RGB screen with some info on it, but i dont remember what it was, i'm just glad i got it fixed.
what free procedure have you had in mind?
Get HSPL back on it, Follow Energy ROM recomendations regarding radio version & get 23699 ROM Dinik from ROM repository.
With a few aditional registry tweaks this is one of the best performing ROMs put together.
My HD2 runs supurb on this ROM with over 40 aditional softwares loaded & used daily for work & leasure.
Simply blows a stock ROM away & makes Android only a SD card loaded plaything.

2 ways mate:
1. enter bootloader (press and hold volume down then briefly press power menu)
and flash a custom ROM
2. if you follow other peoples advice here of flashing a stock ROM via sdcard,
you will loose HSPL. or you can just flash a stock ROM via USB method and
keep HSPL on your device.
I personally recommend step 1.

What I was refering to in my other post is this. I feel like the shop probably just ran a task 29 (Google task 29 for HTC HD2) and then just flashed the stock ROM for your HD2 Wich can be downloaded for free from XDA, HTC.com, and probably your carriers website. These are all things you can do yourself. But like I said if the shop had to take your HD2 apart you did theright thing.
eh, i think they run the thing you said, so i am like 40$ lost on this... this solution should be easier to find, i searched google and xda for the problem i ran into, i typed different keywords, searched for an hour and found only some big guide with one of the steps requiring to buy a software for 20 euro. This forum should be better organized when it comes to HTC errors. Some screens and direct links to solutions.

Just an humble suggestion, users should read "stickies" before they do something to their device.
Almost all of guides, video, tutorial or references links are stickied at the beginning of the the forum/subforums
cheers
