Force 1X Only - Touch Pro CDMA

I'm thinking of getting a Verizon Touch Pro when it's available.
Right now, my battery life on my Motorola Q is terrible. I live in an area where the signal is pretty poor and I think that's the main reason for the bad battery life.
If I go into the "secret" settings on the Q, I can change it to CDMA Only and that disables EvDO and probably gives me at least a 50% increase in battery life.
Unfortunately, it's pretty much of a PITA to go back and forth.
So, if I get a Touch Pro, I guess I have to hope that it's better at picking up a signal (probably not, right?) or that there's some way to put it into CDMA Only mode.
Does anyone know, for sure, that'll be possible?
Now, if that's possible, does a program already exists or could someone easily just write a program that would give me a program icon that if I click it, it toggles the phone between CDMA Only and Automatic? I'm thinking something like the nodata program that I've used before, but even better would be just click on the icon to toggle and no submenus to go through.
I know on the Q when I change back and forth, the change is immediate (Ev icon turns to 1x and vice versa as soon as I make the change), so if I had an icon to just make the change for me without digging through 4 menus to make a change, I might be able to live with just activating EvDO when I'm going to use it.
Any help is appreciated.

I just upgraded from a q, i havent recieved my htc yet so ill try and help with your q problem.
First and foremost never ever let the battery run down. My q worked fine for a year and a half until tuesday the battery ran down and i got this
Anyway, make sure its not going out and checking your email every 1,5,10,15 minutes etc. That really kills the battery fast. Bluetooth too. When I disabled those i saw my battery life skyrocket, but it still went down pretty fast when i used the internet and camera. maybe those two things will help you in the interim though.

you think your moto q battery is bad wait til you get to the your touch pro. i forced my touch pro (data speeds sucked big ones) to 1x by going to settings phone and roaming i set it to roaming only? but that is a sprint version i dont know if verzion allows you to pick roaming only

benitojuarez, I appreciate it, but it's none of that. The reason for the bad battery life on the Q is that the signal is low and it's fluctuating between 1x and EvDO. When I set it to 1x only, the battery life is fine.
cjmedina, yes, I'm worried about that.
That's why I'm here. I'm still hoping someone could come up (either it exists already or someone could make it) with a little utility that when clicked would toggle between 1x (CDMA Only) and Automatic modes. I think I could live with that.
I can't imagine that'd be too difficult. You can force 1x on your Sprint, I can force 1x on my Q. The change takes effect immediately. There's got to be an easy way to program it to happen.
It sounds like you might benefit from this type of program as well. I know on my Q, I rarely switch back from 1x only, just because it's about a multi step process that's a slight PITA to make the change. If I had a one step process, I could leave it as 1x while it's just sitting around and quickly change it to EvDO when I want to use the net. At least that's how I envision it.
Lastly, I'm not certain that my Q hasn't just been defective for 2 years now. I even have the 2100mah Seidio battery and if i leave it as Automatic, I pretty much can't get a full day out of it. If I set it to 1x, I can make it though the day unless I use it real heavily.
I'm worried that unless the TP has a better radio, I might not even make it though the day on 1x only mode. I guess we'll see what happens.

Is there anyone who can assist here?
I can't imagine this is something too difficult. Everyone phone I've had so far allows it to be put into a 1x only mode.
With the work all of you guys do customizing, someone must have a good handle on what needs to be changed to put the phone into 1x mode.
Am I in the right place or should I have posted this in a different forum?
Well, hopefully, someone can come up with something...or point me to something that already exists.
Thanks!

I didn't come up with it but I have tested and it works like a charm.
To do this, you will need your MSL number, which only Sprint (or your provider) can provide you.
1) Open up the phone app and dial ##778# (PST).
2) You will be asked to enter your MSL. Enter it, and you will be brought into the provisioning of your phone.
3) From the top left, select Modem Settings
4) Preferred Mode: The Default is Automatic, which is the best available mode (EV that will roll back to 1X when EV is unavailable). There are times when you might be in a fringe area and your mode may cycle frequently and this can seriously drain your battery. Setting this to HDR will force EV-DO only if you demand an EV-DO connection. Changing this setting to CDMA Only will force the phone to ignore an EV-DO tower and maintain only a 1xRTT connection.
*Change your "Slot Cycle" while you are on this page to one so your phone polls towers every 2 sec instead of 5 sec. I did know about this trick but did not know the force 1xRTT was one of the setting on the same page.

here is the cab for roaming only un zip and install

mrrogers1, I appreciate the response, but, first of all I'm on Verizon.
On my Q, I can do ##*, go into the "secret" menu, to to the option to change it to CDMA only, save it and back out.
It's just too long a process to really do it frequently, so I just wind up leaving my phone in 1x mode and that stinks.
So, what I was looking for is just a program to install that would activate/deactivate that option by just clicking the program icon.
cjmedina, before I install that, can you tell me exactly what that is? Is it for Verizon? What do you mean by roaming only? I want 1x/CDMA only. Will it just disable roaming or is it a toggle thing? I don't want to risk installing something that's not easily reversible.

Roam only wouldn't really address this because if you (at least for me) roam in EVDO coverage the phone stays in that mode. Forcing 1x is something different all together.
Changing in the modem settings is it for now and works well.

I went from a 9c to a Diamond. Maybe the TP is much different but my Diamond signal strength is a little lower than my 9c.
Combine that with the Diamond/TP already bad heat issues, battery life I don't think you'll be happy with it.

Just go to reg and mimic these keys.. It will enable the ability to switch it on and off in the settings panel.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting]
"HiddenModeOperationPage"=dword:0
"HiddenAlertPage"=dword:0
"HiddenNAMSelectPage"=dword:0
"HiddenAlertPage"=dword:0
"HiddenVoicePrivacyPage"=dword:0

I actually found this elsewhere and it works.
---
Here is the Registry edit for enabling Hidden Phone Settings "Mode of Operation" option to pick 1X mode only.
HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting
Change the option HiddenModeOperationPage from 1 to 0
Then go to Phone/menu/option/service/and check in the list, "Mode of Operation" should be at the bottom. You have 3 choices, Hybrid, EVDO, and 1X.
---
With your way, it is supposed to appear somewhere else? You mention settings, but I don't see anything new there.
What does changing HiddenAlertPage, HiddenNAMSelectPage and HiddenVoicePrivacyPage to 0 do?
I'd still like an easier way to do it, like a toggle I can put in my start menu.

What would be really neat is an app that would force 1x unless you were in certain applications (like opera or you tube) and than switch to hybrid for the duration of the session.

For what it's worth, someone posted a mortscript over here

that toggles 1x/hybrid.
Works pretty quickly too. I'm happy.

that post works great, one of the guys on the post made a program that lets you run a script that does it all for you whenever you wanna switch back and forth between 1x and hybrid.

That script is probably the best option. Otherwise there's a registry key that enables the menu option, though I can't remember where it is. Verizon usually has the option disabled so the key needs to be added to the registry.

So I found through the Advanced Config a way to add a 3G on off button in the comm manager, but as we are CDMA it does not work for us. Can anyone confirm what this button is trying to do? Perhaps a redirect to the reg setting for hybrid/1x?

I know you noted that it wasn't your idea, but maan, did it work. Thank you so much. that was the last step I needed for my HTC Touch PRO to work on MetroPCS web... this is the easiest method (rather them editing registry)!! Thank you much.

Has anyone made this work on a Verizon HTC Touch Pro2?
My extended battery lasts about 12 hours (EVDO 0-1 bars in buildings) and I think this could help me.
The *-something and #-something numbers place a call that says invalid number. The registry edits don't make anything for Mode of Operation appear under "CDMA Services" on Phone Settings.

Rom 3.16 Post Installation Issues, Icons, etc

I have seen many, many threads about POST installation issues regarding the new 3.16 rom. I would like to attempt a problem/resolution thread that hopefully everyone will participate in order to create a "one-stop-shopping" thread regarding these issues.
I figure the mods will later either delete dormant threads or compile related threads into one. Hopefully we can get most if not all issues related to post installation here and properly labeled...
Please post problem(s) and if applicable, the resolution(s) to the problem regarding the 3.16 rom w/ Rev. A & GPS compatibility, including custom & stock rom. Please keep the thread limited to calls, data ( Rev. A & 0 plus Ev & 1X), task bar icons, prl's, etc and refer GPS questions/issues to threads like TalynOne's The Titan Internal GPS FAQ (01/30/2008) located here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363431
I have included below some links to start off the thread which includes a link to the definition of what the PRL is and what it does and below that is a site with former & current PRL's for numerous carriers.

I flashed this ROM and I have since, jumped to DCDs version of it, and then back to 2.17.
I have, and apparently, a lot of folks have had inconsistent EVDO connection problems. Some times it freezes on "Loading"...other times, I can begin to pull up a web page and it times out. Speeds were good when it rarely did work properly.
The odd thing is that I have loaded new ROMS (including the current Sprint OEM ROM) and I'm still having that problem. (I'm taking suggestions to resolve this)
Also, like others, voice signal displayed fewer bars than usual. More "Signal Faded, Call lost than I have ever seen with this device.
On a kinda more positive note...
GPS worked well (when the EVDO connection did)
New Apps sucked up more of our previous RAM, but I didn't have any
latency or freeze ups.
I myself am experiencing a number of problems with the new ROM version, and will be downgrading to 2.17 soon. It took 3 installations of the new ROM to get the GPS to work. Since then, I've experienced several performance issues, including multiple times where the phone will freeze during web browsing in Opera Mobile. Sometimes, the phone won't even freeze, but will come up with a screen saying that the system memory is low, even when I'm only running Opera Mobile, it'll ask me to close either "Opera Mobile" "Phone" "Phone" or "Phone". Weird? I think so...
Also, there are times where I won't even get the internet to work. I'll have to either go in to the connections menu and disable the data connection, or do a soft reset of the phone completely.
In my opinion, it's probably more trouble than I really need to go through. I will be downgrading to 2.17 until the official release comes out.
Same issues for me:
inconsistent EVDO connection problems. Some times it freezes on "Loading"...other times, I can begin to pull up a web page and it times out. Speeds were good when it rarely did work properly.
Also, like others, voice signal displayed fewer bars than usual. More "Signal Faded, Call lost than I have ever seen with this device.
Spent 30 min with VZW level 2 support today. I called due to ##debug HDR an/aaa was = 0.. I was under the impression was supposed to be set to 1. They did look at my SSDR (I think he said that) and found it had a small issue with the authentication (still reads =0), but after he fixed that I still have issues. My HDR RDX power goes from -71db to -96db.
I also noticed every time I call the phone changes from EV to 1x. I know you don't use EV to make voice calls, but I did not remember (key word) seeing it switch like that before. Maybe someone with 2.17 1.40 radio can confirm.
I have thought about moving back too, but my call ticket history is getting pretty long with VZW and if I needed another A-key (yes I have one written down) it may start to look strange.
I'm on sprint and when I tried to update I was stuck on boot loader so I went online and switched esn over to my Treo for the time being as I worked on my Mogul. Eventually I got to load the rom fully and switched esn back. I noticed afterwards that my internet was only locking at 1x. Upon restart it would say EV but anytime it is connected to the net it is 1x. DSLreports clocked it at 50-90kbps so I know as definitely getting 1x speed. Reloaded the rom several times and still the same. This went on for 2 days. Eventually called Sprint and told them of my problem. They noticed that I was still on the regular Vision plan but I have always been able to connect to EVDO speeds so I never thought that was an issue. They updated me to Power Vision and right after I started getting EVDO speeds. I'm not sure if it was because of the change or maybe a restart of my data service that did the trick.
2 other issues I'm having is I noticed my phone is a little slow with this ROM. Opening programs etc. Sometimes the program using GPS like Live Search or GPS Viewer will lock up temporarily. The 2nd issue is what some are also reporting regarding signal. I noticed I get 1 to 2 less signal bars.
Overall 3.16 has been "ok". No problems with flashing really, and memory usage is "ok", I'm averaging around 17-18mb free with no apps running. It's not exactly the 20-22mb I had free with my prior custom rom, but enough to get by.
I'm not having problems with phone freezes or out of memory errors. I am, however, having some problems with BT and with net connectivity.
Data: I'm using Schap's Advanced config tool, version 1.1, and I've selected the option to keep my 'net connection live all the time. Unfortunately, this is not working, and I'm finding that throughout the day my connection goes down. With my prior custom rom, if I was streaming audio content over evdo or 1x, the connection would stay alive as long as the audio program was running, barring a loss of cell signal. Now I'm finding that about once an hour my data connection goes down and interrupts my audio stream.
BT: I have a Plantronics 320 headset, which worked flawlessly (albeit with less than stellar audio quality) with my prior rom. With 3.16, the volume and sound quality are much improved, BUT I am not able to answer calls on my headset. If I initiate a call with BT on, no problems, I can talk till the call is over, then press the headset hard button to hang up. If I *receive* a call, however, when I press the headset hard button to answer, the call is answered, but the audio is not directed to the headset. Instead, it routes to the handset.
GPS works well with TeleNav, GoogleMaps, Live, and generally locks onto 5-7 satellites within about 60 seconds if I'm somewhere with a clear view of the sky.
I tried using GPS2Blue to redirect the GPS data to a BT comm port. When I have BT enabled and attempt to redirect, GPS2Blue says BT port not open, waiting for BT port to open. If I go into comm manager and turn BT off, then GPS2Blue says BT port is open, and begins to wait for a BT connection to my laptop. If I go back into comm manager, the BT icon has been grayed out as if BT is off, but the little circled "X" icon is not superimposed over the BT icon as it would be when BT is off. If I click the icon again, it acts as if BT is being enabled, but the icon doesn't change, and the BT LED does not begin to blink. Don't know if it's a problem with GPS2Blue software or something else. Wish it would work cleanly, I'd love to use my 6800 as a BT GPS receiver for my laptop.
ETA: I've seen a few folks mention that when they answer a voice call their 6800 switches from Evdo to 1X. I'm wondering if this might be a way of implementing simultaneous voice & data. Has anyone tried taking a call and browsing the web simultaneously? I think this may be dependant upon network services in your area, so this may only work for folks in big cities with the most advanced network features, if it works at all...
ETA2: Just tried the above, and I'm getting the usual message that data connections cannot be initiated while on a voice call. I'm in a large city that *should* have all the latest network features, so if it dual voice/data was possible with this radio then it should work here. I'm assuming it's not presently possible, based on my experiment, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.
with the sprint rom a ton of us have no audio out using an adaptor to listen through headphones
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=363087
is a big thread about this going on the main board.
Took the plunge and installed the "stock" 3.16 on both my phone and a friend's last night. The first thing I want to note is that it went extremely smooth. No issues to note. It took a bit too long for my liking but it was fine. I didn't have to modify any MSID or MSN data - my phone worked fine right off the bat. Data was hosed, but a quick client-initiated IOTA Programming fixed that. (Settings, Personal, Phone, Services, Internet, Get Settings)
I have two constantly pinging(one 15 mins, one 30) e-mail accounts(one imap, one Exchange) that must keep my data connection alive. I haven't noticed a single decline in my data rate, nor a problem with disconnections. Then again, I live in NYC, which may make a difference.
GPS sucked last night - I couldn't get a satellite to save my life. On the way to work today, though, it was perfect. 4 satellites found in GMaps and tracking worked great.
I'm pretty happy w/the new additions to PocketOutlook too. Has anyone noticed that Gmail's IMAP works perfectly now, and that when you have multiple accounts - hitting messaging (when it's previously closed) brings up a choice of which account to go to? SWEET!
Just a quick "me too" regarding both disconnects and getting hung up during certain downloads. I've noticed that both "Live Search" from Microsoft's site and the latest (2.17) OEM ROM from HTC's site both hang up soon after they start downloading. This occurs both on the phone itself and while tethering to my laptop.

So the phone made me out to be a liar. The LiveSearch download from wls.live.com failed now. It definitely worked last night on my roommate's phone however. Hrm. I downloaded it from my pc and emailed it to myself and it actually downloaded. That's odd.

Had trouble getting my phone to flash, because I flashed the radio before the rom. Once I got phone going is working perfect. Hooked up to pda net on laptop downloading at 1.7 uploading at 500K. Use Holux to get gps started all programs work, Tom Tom is more accurate with my mogul compared to the external gps. Have not tried my s9 headphones yet. Running the DCD beta and I have no complaints except for the memory. Phone quality is the same.
v3.16+ ROM puts a voicemail icon on the 1 key which screws up the keypad if you are using the BlueFrog Big Button Dialer. To fix this, change the registry DWORD value at
Code:
HKCU\ControlPanel\PhoneExtendFunction\CDMA\EnableVoicemailIcon
from 1 to 0, and soft reset.
I was running Custels V1.1 2.14 and radio 1.47.00. I had my data set to connect all the time (which never idled btw...)and had Ev service everywhere. After installing Dcd's 3.16 & radio 3.27 I first recieved the "twin towers"... One had data connection and the other looked like the searching-for-signal tower. Plus my roam indicator was constanlty blinking.
After searching the forums, a helpful soul recommended *228 then press 3 which programs your phone. Remember that you are not upgrading to a new phone.
I then *228 and pressed 2 this time to program the latest PRL (which was 30029 before and still then). After searching some more, I saw that there was indeed a newer PRL which is 40029 (link in the first thread). I downloaded the PRL to my Sd card, dialed **775, entered my Alltel Unlock Code of 000000 and and the first screen I saw was update prl. Click on "Menu" in bottom right and hit the "Edit" button. Now you should see a empty value with "Browse" below it. Browse to the location where you placed your prl, upload and if you exit out correctly, you should be soft resetting your device.
After completeing the steps above, my roaming triangle was gone as well as the extra tower. I still have my data constantly on with Ev coverage all the time but my data actually idles now. Call quality has been noticed by myself and others as clearer and louder than before.
That Reg Entry doesnt exist on mine.

Mine has the following instead:
"HKCU\ControlPanel\PhoneExtendFunction\CDMA\VoicemailIcon
Value name:BtnDN_LAND Value data:Windows\_VoicemailBtn1_Land.bmp" and three other similars.
Should that entry be added in it's entirety or should I remove my current entries? Any body else find they have entries like mine?
I thought I had that problem at first, but when I looked more closely, the reg entry is *in* the CDMA folder, not in a sub-folder below CDMA.
!!Major Bluetooth Issue!!
recently installed DCD's new GPS enabled ROM for Verizon. Everything has been working well even the GPS !!EXCEPT!! Bluetooth OBEX. When I try to send / beam any type of file my XV6800 stops responding and I am forced to soft reset.
I don't know if this only affects the Verizon ROM or all carriers for that matter. Is there any one here that has a fix or know's of a fix to resolve this issue? Has DCD released any news on this? I would Gladly appreciate it, as all the people with this issue.

I loaded the Sprint Test Rom. No when ever I boot my phone it takes ~4 minutes for the phone to lock onto the network.
You are may differ with this situation....
PRL's didn't change. Even reloaded 60610. EVDO roaming is gone. Guess they didn't like people forcing their phone to roaming in areas where Alltel has EVDO and Sprint doesn't. 60611 also removed EVDO roaming in my area. 60610 and 2.17 work fine with EVDO roaming.
CardExport & the My Documents-redirect-to-SD-card reg tweak:

Wanted: One touch switch from Sprint Only to Automatic Roaming

Hey all. I use the old cycleBT utility to turn BT on and off constantly. I am looking for a utility that could sit in the start menu as a single program that would change my roaming settings from Sprint Only to Automatic, etc.
Has anyone come across such a utility. If not, is this something that could be done in Mortscript? Could anyone take a stab at it?
Thanks,
Josh
PS-I want to have this to save battery life and turn on roaming easily only when there is no signal at all. I work in a hospital and there is NO cell service in the basement and then I get one bar roaming and then back to sprint, etc...and it fries the battery
i too would like to request such a feature
I am not a programmer, but I have dabbled a little with mortscript. I was tweaking TalynOne's GPS script. I noticed that he made some registry edits, which worked well for changing battery and backlight timeouts. I don't have time to figure it out now, but if I did, I would start by getting cregedit (http://ceregeditor.mdsoft.pl/?lang=en) and saving a copy of my registry. I would then change the setting to the other one, and compare the current registry to the saved registry. This would show me what key(s) were changed by changing the setting. I would then go about learning how to write a mortscript to change the registry settings. This is the hard part for me but I'm sure it's elementary for the programmers. There are lots of examples on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=289197
EDIT: dcd is right, no setting in registry. I'm out of ideas.

i believe that changing the setting sends a command to the radio. notice this setting survives a hard reset? my guess is that you will not find a setting in the registry. need to find a way of scripting epst or sending the command to the radio.
I hope this isn't too terribly off topic, but I really don't want to try this and incur a huge bill.
Does sprint still charge for roaming? Or is that a thing of the past? I remember accidentally making a couple roam calls not not seeing anything on my bill but I don't stay on the phone long to begin with sooooo....yeah.
I guess the main point I'm trying to get to is, are there any negative consequences for making roaming calls?

It is off topic, but it doesn't bother me. Hopefully won't bother others. I have gotten several bills over last 6 months with roaming calls. They reimbursed me because it's included in our plan. I would disable it on the phone and call them and see if they can disable it. If so, then then they will flag your account so if you get roaming charges, they can easily reimburse you.
Try this script - One Touch Toggle
You must have mortscript installed on your ppc in order for the script to work.
There will be two files in this zip.
1. Roaming Shortcut.lnk
2. Roaming Selection.mscr
Place the roaming shortcut.lnk in your \windows directory of pocket pc.
Place the roaming selection.mscr anywhere on your phone. You can tie it to a button if you place it under \Windows\start menu\programs
Run the roaming selection.mscr. It will aks you which of the 4 you would prefer Roaming, Sprint Only, Automatic or Toggle
It will default to Toggle if the time runs out.
Once you make your choice it will open the phone settings by use of the roaming shortcut.lnk.
It will then choose roaming and then it will pick the correct roaming selection and then exit out of both of the phone settings windows.
Before Toggle can be used you must first either select Roaming or Automatic.. from that point on the Toggle selection will go from either
Roaming or Automatic by itself.

Nice script. Great idea. It doesn't work for my Diamond because the screen mappings are for QVGA. I'm currently using your shortcut to at least save a few steps.
I looked at your script, and the Mortscript commands. I think it's a simple matter of remapping the mouse clicks for VGA. How does one go about determing the x and y locations on the screen?
Thanks!

Instead of trying to determine x and y locations, you could just give it commands to go up/down/left/right/center on the d-pad.

All credits go to andason. I took his script and modified it to work with VGA. I remapped the screen coordinates and change the wait time on each action. I found the wait time did not need to be so long.
To use w/ VGA:
Download andason's zip, install as instructed, download my VGA script and replace his with mine. You will still need the .lnk file.
prerequsite:
You must have roaming enabled. If you do not, follow this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\InitProv\PhoneSetting
1) Change ItemCount to 3
2) Create new string (if doesn't exist): ItemName3 = Roaming. (Default = Automatic-B on my Diamond)
3) New Dword: ItemValue3 = 3
Soft reset. Go back to the settings you should now see roaming option.
Enjoy...
snovvman, you are the man! thanks for the VGA roaming script.

I've attached a modified VGA roaming script that simply toggles between Roaming and Automatic without showing the Mortscript choice menu. I have it mapped to a softkey so I can quickly toggle between the two.
andason or snowman,
Installing the zipped files as well as mortscript I get only as far as the Settings menu. I then have to manually toggle to Roaming, Settings and make the change. I made sure to insert the shortcuts file to the windows directory and the .mscr file to the programs folder so that I could shortcut to a button. Any ideas as to why it will not complete the toggle for me. Thanks in advance,
Gordon
I've been looking for something I can put in my startup folder to run when the phone boots to do the opposite. If I change my phone from "Automatic" to "Home Only" as soon as I even soft reset the setting is changed back.
Just recently called Telus to have them remove the roaming data charges ($32 for 4mb!) I got when I was near the border (didn't even cross). The person tried to look into a way to permanently disable roaming and after talking with their data department she said it was impossible and then tried to tell me I should get a BlackBerry.
I'll have to try some of the stuff in this thread later tonight.

Questions regarding Hero

hi all,
just recently bought a hero and sorry for the noob questions. any help will be greatly appreciated.
1.) How do i activate the green notification light for any new notifications? so far i can only use the trackball to flash for a number of minutes and thats it.
2.) how can i permanently use 3g as a signal without switching back to edge? i prefer 3g because it is faster, but when i use the web, it reverts to edge making it slower when browsing. i want it never to switch back to edge just 3g.
3.) How do you update radio and rom? is it the same with winmo? i have a topaz and im currently using hero.
Thanks for any feedback!
So far the only answer i found was the notification light as a bug or a defect. line switching is still unsolved and updating.

1) It works as it is stated in the user's manual. How can you state that it is a bug or defect? Funny... Just because it works that way on Magic or G1 does not mean that it has to be the same on Hero.
2) You cannot as your phone will automatically switch between them when one another is not available. You phone will select 3G only if it is available around where you are. If it switches to Edge/GPRS/whatever, that means you don't have 3G signals around you.
3) There are 1.000 posts on the forum here regarding updating ROM, etc. Search is our best friend.

You can force HSDPA, but you do so at your own risk!
You need to download AnyCut from the Market and create new shortcut to the activity "Phone Info". From this short cut, you access a screen which gives lots of diagnostic info about the phones state and there is an option to "Set preferred network type". By default this is "WCDMA Preferred", but if you want to force to always use HSDPA you should select "WCDMA Only".
Note if you do this, your phone will never drop back to 2G, even if a 2G signal is available and a 3G one isn't.
I wouldn't advise playing around with any of the other options in this screen unless you know what you are doing!
Regards,
Dave

very interesting. because for my topaz i always set it to wcdma only. willing to give it a try. where can i download it? do i need a gmail account for this? cant find it any website where it can be downloaded.
Android software is downloadable via the Android Market application on your hero - any purchases are made by using a google checkout account which is set up like paypal so you don't need to enter your details all the time...

[Q] Signal Bar Mod

Does anyone know a signal bar mod that removes all signal bats so I only have the 3g signal?in my school everything but phones is allowed so ,I wanna be able to use my phone.
Please,do not say something dumb like, well why don't you turn airplane mode on?
I'm running gingeritis 3d beta VIII
I'm assuming that, contrary to your description, you don't just want to "remove the signal bars" since that would just be a visual change.
As best I can tell you want to still have 3g data without phone? In that case you would just set your preferred network to "EVDO only" either through Settings->Wireless&Networks->Mobile Networks->Network Mode (use this method if your rom has this menu) or opening your dialer and dialing *#*#4636#*#* -> phone info -> prefered network.

No no no, I want the bars to not be visible, as it would be a clear indication that its a phone

Hmm...so it was just a visual change you wanted. Guess I missunderstood.
Well, overlooking that you feel the authority in your school will believe it isn't a phone just because there aren't little bars up there (and btw, if they buy that you might want to consider transferring schools )...
Use Ninjamorph (or look up how to manually theme apks if you want to do it from a computer) to remove the corresponding image files and/or edit the xmls of the appropriate apks (which apks will depend on the rom and I'm not personally familiar with Gingeritis much less your specific release but I'd look for SystemUI.apk in /system/app first). I'm not completely sure if this will fall back onto some defaults or not but it's easy to test.
If just removing the files doesn't work, you could always just replace all the images you want with a replacement clear filler image so that all you see is the statusbar.
Either way, you may want to do a little reading up on theming apks so you have an idea of what to look for (i.e. res/drawable-hdpi where the images are located and how to edit them)
Maybe I should make a TMo theme for this...lol
I actually don't have much time right now or I'd give you more details (or at least check #1). But IMHO, it's better to learn this stuff than be told anyway. If you need more help, I'm sure there are themers out there that will help you further.

[SOLVED] Fulmics 7.0 hidden menu caused phone to lose cell/text connectivity

I really need some assistance ASAP on this one, folks. My phone/text is not working at all ever since I did the following stupidly today.
I tried to see if there was an option to get 2G/3G/4G working on the VS985 on 7.0. Guess I shouldn't have been so curious.
The only real steps I took to see was going to: Settings>Fulmics Tweaks>Advanced>Hidden Menu>Modem Protocol>Changed to Automatic..........now I have NO talk/text. Only 4G LTE data. Does anyone know what I'm referring to here? How do I get back to the original settings which worked fine!?
There must be a way out of this mess.
EDIT: there is! seemingly random combo led me to a solution.
Under the phone settings for mobile network - network mode: select CDMA+LTE/EVDO, and under the access point names: use VZWINTERNET. Make sure both of those are also the same in the hidden menu as well as selecting AUTO under Modem Protocol. That seemed to fix it for me.
Mods can close this one up.

So far, so good. I haven't been to any areas with 3G coverage, but I hope to have that working as well now. I'm traveling halfway around the US this week, so it should make for a good test. Also installed Greenify - does voodoo magic for the battery life.

Thanks! If the combo above doesn't work, you can also try auto under the hidden menu frequency, and auto (or global) in the phone APN settings if LTE/CDMA don't give you a good signal or only give you data but not voice. For some reason the phone APN settings may look different depending on what you have previously selected or when you reboot. The access point should always be VZWINTERNET and you should not change any of those values in either the hidden menu or the phone network menu.
Once you get it figured out, you should not have any further issues or need to tweak these values unless traveling internationally. If that is the case, check the LTE bands carefully 1st and adjust frequency 2nd.
I'd be extremely cautious about changing any of these values. If you make any mistakes, recovering can be a slow process as these are system level changes that will impact the phone - no matter what version of android, rom or nandroid backups you had previously - cannot override these changes. Also, screenshots won't help because the changes in the hidden menu aren't reflected in the UI.
