Running short on batteries? - Touch HD Accessories

I'd like to point out this great device, it works perfectly well with the touch HD and it is very handy!

it essentially doubles the autonomy of the touch HD WHEN NEEDED!

i got one when they were on the cheap from ibood, one day.

[Q] Stylus

i want to use a stylus to write a note. but i don't know how gtab suppot stylus.
i hope anyone can help me
thanks a lot.
PS:my english is very terrible
I am also looking for a stylus but so far no luck. Anyway, I will let you know if I find one that works.
Welcome to the forum.... what nationality are you?
You'll need a stylus that's compatible with a capacitive touchscreen. Something made to work with Ipad or Xoom. You can also make your own with a piece of anti-static bag (the silver ones).
do you know any app note suppot stylus well?
I have never tried a stylus with the Gtab. You could try the canvas app in Gojimi's ported adam apps thread, but you'll probably need to search for a notes app that will work on the Gtab with a stylus for your purpose.
Gojimi's Adam Apps for Gtab Thread
2 apps
multiNote and NoteEverything can make notes with a stylus. As the previous poster said, get one that is iPad compatible. I find that the notes don't work as well as a tablet PC stylus.
I purchased a stylus from Amazon which is sold by BoxWave. It's just a generic capacitive stylus.
I've not been really impressed with it, it seems like I have to push down fairly hard to get it to work.
I have not used it with any note-taking apps yet.
REVISED: I've been using it for a couple of weeks now, and I like it. I am using it on my Aria as well. Very good for the price.

This one works. My friend has one for his ipad and i tested on my g tab. Not sure where you can get one though. The tip (unlike my other stylus) is not "rubber". It's soft (really soft) -> can be pushed in with minimal strength.
Edit: It seems to be from 3M and heres a video showing how soft the tip is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiA-pc2ssMA&feature=related
Edit 2: Im now stuck on Youtube because it seems utterly good! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXgxAJf9j-g

Some initial thoughts from users

Hi all,
got the Flyer today, after some hours of playing around I'd like to share my thoughts with other users:
- solid thing, just opening the top to insert the cards was a bit tricky for me
- very fast, no problems with the HTC Sense interface, works perfectly fine. Still in applicaitions like Google Maps a bit slower than the Xoom I'm testing in parallel.
- I like the new e-Mail client and calendar application a lot.
- Being an intensive evernote user, I am happy that there is a good direct integration, also with the notes you can take with the pen. Well done!
- The speakers are great, one of the few things where I don't agree with the Engadget review which has been posted today. And: They are extremely loud, louder than any of the - many - devices I could test up to now, including iPad, iPad2, Galaxy Tab and Xoom.
- The screen is great and very bright, together with the loadspeakers a great experience in Youtube or watching one of the HQ movie trailers which came with the Flyer.
- Generally, I prefer the 7'' format over the 10'' of the Xoom and the iPad. I think it is the best tablet format for me. The weight lets you hold it for a very long time without getting tired, the Xoom (which I like a lot because of Honeycomb and the incredible speed) is too heavy for me.
- the typing experience is excellent, the Flyer has the right balance between being responsive, but not over-responsive. The Xoom seems to react to even the slightest touch, this was almost a bit too much for me in the beginning
- there is a significant frame around the screen, much larger than the Xoom has. This is sometimes a problem when using the Xoom because it is hard to hold without touching the screen (and eventually doing something unwanted), but the frame around the screen of the Flyer is really huge. This makes it easy to hold the device in several ways, though.
- The bag shipped with the device is a joke from my point of view, first of all it does not allow you to use the device when in the bag, second the pen is attached outside and somehow always disturbing; also I guess it will be lost soon. I will wait for something which holds the pen inside and can be opened to use the Flyer without taking it out.
- Mixed feelings about the pen: The setup in the bottom right corner is excellent and intuitive and the pen seems to react quite quickly, it is fun to use. But: The hardware is not my favorite at all. Especially the buttons on the pen are hard to reach and it is not easy to hold it naturally
- Some new functionality in the browser including small thumbnails of the open windows, well done. Also pinch out works. I like it, it seems to be very fast and the re-arrangement of the text when zooming seems to be excellent.
- Although I don't need a camera in a device like that and I really don't care, still to mention that the camera seems to be really terrible.
- Installed tons of apps, everything works great, no speed issues at all.
- HTC Sense in the tablet edition is great. Some new additions for books, notes,... first impression everything well done, HTC
My first summary after a couple of hours is very positive. Let's see how I think after a week or two. No comments at that point about battery life for sure, but the Engadget review (and the very first, non-reliable own impressions) give me a good feeling.
Questions anytime, for sure! And appologies for my German English
Got mine today too.
I am fairly impressed and looking forward to taking it out and about with me tomorrow. I am curious to see if I can get 2 days battery life out of it or not.
The screen is wonderful. No other word for it. I used to think Super AMOLED was the best, but this is the best screen I have seen on an Android device.
The browser is excellent. Fast, stable, easy to use.
I find the pen fairly good. Though I keep pressing the buttons when I dont mean to. I cant wait to use it in a meeting!
Using Kindle on the device seems to be a great experience. The inbuilt ebook reader is really nice, but I am a Kindle user.
The updated HTC mail app is lovely as is the weather and calendar. But the software is not particularly tablet friendly otherwise. I like Sense and am using friend stream for the first time on at HTC device (this is my 3rd) and it works well.
The form factor is excellent. Easy to hold in one hand. It is quite a bit heavier than a Kindle despite not being much larger, but I am sure I could hold it all day without too much trouble unlike a 10" 700g device like the ipad2.
It's not all great though. I have had a few crashes through the day and the performance is not always silky smooth. I find the volume buttons a bit rattly and whilst the speakers are good, they are really not that good. There is no search button which I definitely miss and it is a major fingerprint magnet.
Overall, I am really pleased with the device so far. Feel free to ask any questions.
Hi Onkel,
Can you say a bit more about how writing with the pen feels like? The reviews are all saying that it's not that great for regular note taking (as opposed to doodling/drawing), especially in comparison with wacom digitizers on windows tablets. I have a win tablet right now and this makes me a bit
hard to tell for me, as my personal tablet experiences come from an IBM Thinkpad a couple of years ago.
Generally, I guess the Flyer will be for short note taking rather than replacing a tablet Pc. There is no handwriting recognition for the Flyer yet, and even if it will be available later, I think the handwriting quality I produce on the device will not be good enough.
I think there are many scenarios where the pen is helpful though, I had a Pdf document to comment today and the Flyer was a dream to use. Other example, for our corporate website I do a lot of commenting on improvements and bugs, the screenshot & comment feature with the pen is simply wonderful...
thoughts on performance?
i know you both mentioned performance, one as being excellent and the other as being ok. After spending more time with the device do you have any more details on the performance? One mentioned google maps being slower than on the xoom, slow enough to be an issue?
I am a little worried about purchasing a device that is already outdated, especially when there are rumors of amazing releasing both dual core and quad core tablets before the end of the year, the scribe tech has be pretty excited about this tablet, but i think i'm reeling in my expectations after reading some reviews.
thanks!

That was me. If you start to go into 3D and then turn the map with the finger, I see a difference. No issue at all. As usual, once you have used a device like the Xoom, which is setting a new standard as I think, you get used to it.
This is a 1.5 ghz device and couple of months ago I thought 1 ghz is all I will ever need
I an very pleased with the performance up to now, and I started tons of apps yesterday and it works great. SlideIT keyboard, which I am using right now, is a great performance test and it works great also.
The bigger question for you will be whether the pen turns out to be a toy or an important tool. I am not sure yet...

I would describe the performance as similar overall to my Desire HD. It is all the speed you would need, but not the fastest thing out there. I have found it does bog down sometimes which a dual core might not, but nothing to cause me concern personally.

Thanks. I mainly want to use it as a substitute notebook for my college classes so how well it emulates pen and paper is something to think about.
Any impressions on the battery life? The reviews say you get a full day and more of standard use. Is the only batter hog video playback (the stated 4 hours of playback time)?

I'm also looking forward to usage of the pen and found your PDF comment interesting. Did you have to take a screenshot and work with that, or could you open the PDF in the book reader, which I know has added pen applications?

regarding battery life, I am on a conference all day and the Flyer was with me all day, pushing and answering emails, taking notes and doing Demos for my collegues...
after half day battery says 76%. So I guess running out of battery during the day seems impossible to me, as long as you don't spend most of the day with Angry Birds and movies
Did anyone manage to use the flyer in making gsm calls???!!!!!
Hi
Wants about video streaming to TV , does it have HDMI via USB cable or DLNA . HTC web site in official specs does not mention anything about it.

It definitely supports DLNA although I havent tried to get it working yet. I have heard there is meant to be HDMI out through the USB port and the fact the port is Ext-MicroUSB suggests as much, but I haven't seen the cable for sale anywhere.

The problem is that I now use my Flyer too much! Love the note taking and ebook reading. The size is perfect. So the battery does last a day, but I always give a quick charge during the day just in case.
Hi. With regards to the Evernote integration on the Flyer, is it possible to maintain a copy of the created notes locally on the Flyer in addition to having them synced with Evernotes on the web ?
Having a local copy on the device will definitely speed up the retrieval of created notes and give you access to these notes when there is no internet access available.
A suggestion and a question.
The suggestion is for those who keep clicking the button inadvertently. There are pen/pencil grips you can buy that will cover the button so you have to press down firmly to activate it.
The question is whether there are any options to control pen vs. finger input. For example, on my tablet, I can set the N-Trig control to "auto." At this setting, the tablet will recognize finger input until I use the pen, at which point it will switch to pen-only input. When I want to use my finger again, I just tap twice on the screen with my finger. That way there's never any palm recognition issues.

As others have said elsewhere, NO you don't even have the dial button or app in the list of applications to make a gsm call.
Perhaps when the flyer is rooted we will have some devs working on that.

How is the multitouch? How much points does it have? Could you test it for me? I want to buy one too.
Thanks Tbo-art

It is heavy, do you forget it in your pocket?

the price is high and the temptation to buy an ipad2 honestly is present (despite I love droid) I would like to see a flyer vs ipad2 on the tube, in the meanwhile the most important factor for me to make adiscrimination between the two(I would always use my hd2 of course) is the weight..I would like to know by the users if you evaluate him really portable or your little bag burden on your shoulders.
Definitely. If you're concerned with weight and portability, Flyer is the choice. Apart from the screen (scratches, see other thread ) it is solid and lightweight compared to the iPad 1 (which is a few gram heavier than the new one). With the iPad I always needed to decide whether to take it with me or not, even though it is considerably lighter than a notebook or a netbook, but taking the Flyer with you is a no-brainer.
thank you
I really urge to buy something, because at the moment my hd2 has the touch screen that does not work anymore( ) and I cannot wait 4 weeks to repair( maybe I ll find some shop here in adam without assistance) well the price is definetely high, especially considering all the models that are coming out, also if HTC remains for me the best android choice. Ill think thank you
I can definitely attest to forgetting its in my pocket. I put it in my back pocket the day after I bought it and i sat on it and freaked out because i thought i damaged the screen but it was OK.

Yes, this device fits in the back pocket of jeans or khakis without a problem. As far as I know, the iPad 2 can't do that trick. I like keeping my devices naked with just a thin film of invisibleshield and screen protector.
If you don't need the pen integration, then by all means there are less expensive 7" models out there. If you're looking for a "boardroom" device, the pen integration is a great, but the HTC won't have as much clout as an iPad.

I really do not need a pen integration if there are not dictionaries inbuilted, since taking notes and recognize them in digital format is something will be probably possible without frustration in 5 years at least, but I feel loyal to htc and I prefer android. But since I have already my incredible hd2 and an outsatanding sony reader, maybe I will choiche archos 7 internet if I ll found a way to connect with my 3G hda2 and swype will go, but do you think really that archos 7 screen is brighter, and touch responsive as htc flyer? otherwise which other 7 inches alternatives you have in mind? I need battery, screen readable outdoor, great touch experience, complete compatibility with droid(without swype I am lost)

The HTC screen is nice. Others have posted that It's fine outdoors. HTC has a few feature called Trace which is very similar to Swype.
The pen integration is only available in certain apps. It's not like the pdas where your handwriting is recognized into letters. What you write on the screen is what you get. More like pen and paper.
I don't think the archos has a capacitive screen. It should connect to your WiFi hotspot with no issue. Its a lot less expensive than the Flyer. Again if pen integration is not necessary the Archos would be fine.

I've never used the archos 7 but the archos 5 was a fantastic media player. I'm referring to the android version. I seriously doubt the screen on the archos 7 is brighter than the flyer. I have yet to take this thing off minimum brightness. It is INSANELY bright!!! Its hard to even give and example. If i had a video camera I would show you a comparison between the Thunderbolt, which has a great screen, and the flyer. It really is crazy!
On the compatiblity with swype i'm not sure but I would mention that swyping on a larger screen has to be more time consuming than using thumb keyboard which gives you tablet keyboard options. That is a personal preference though.
The last part is the battery. I've used quite a few android devices that include the galaxy tab, motorola droid, droid incredible, thunderbolt, and galaxy s (fascinate), and i would say the battery is a little bit better than the galaxy tab and that battery life was great!!! I used the Flyer pretty much all day yesterday at work, I'm an engineer, and I was drawing circuits all day and it was tethered to my thunderbolt all day and when I got home i was still at 40%. So battery life is great!!
I hope that helps.

Stylus?

Has anybody tried a stylus with the NT? I read that they have an improved touchscreen controller in the NT and wanted to see if anyone has tested it out.
Yes, I use a tegra stylus from walmart constantly. I love it. Keeps smudges off my screen, I can be more accurate then with my fingers and I love the sketchbook app from autodesk.
+1 I got my targa from Radio Shack. It works fairly well. I will say it dosnt work as well as my Evo 3d, but it is still satisfactory.

Sketchbook is great and in my opinion a bargain at a dollar. I haven't tried the new adobe stuff on android, that might be what I end up doing tonight though. There's also autocad avaliable if that helps you any(made by same company as SBM).

Tried to buy Photo shop I got the dreaded your device is not compatible, if I remember correctly it was designed for Honeycomb.
I can't think of what brand stylus I have...pretty sure most of them are the same anyway...but it works much better with the NT compared to the NC.
how much better? i mean your stylus on nt versus the nc. i have a nc and may switch to nt if the screen sensitivity is better and also has a custom rom like cm. thx.
Thanks for the feedback, I have two stylii that i tried on the NC (Dagi) and they worked OK, so will take them to the store and try on the NT. Sounds like if they worked on the NC at all, they should be much better on the NT.

I, too, use a Targus Stylus. It works well, but it takes some getting used to. I keep selecting items in the market (and other places) when I'm trying to scroll down.
I just bought a pogo sketch pro from TenOne. It seems to work ok on my phone but it is horribly slow on the Nook Tablet. I've tried it with Handrite, SketchBook Mobile, and Skitch. Anyone experiencing slow response with a stylus?
By contrast my finger seems to work much better so I'm stumped as to whether I'm having a stylus problem (works well on phone) or a tablet problem (finger works fine).

If your finger works fine, it's probably the stylus. I picked up a tablet yesterday (did the trade in deal with my original nook) and will try out my Dagi stylii this weekend.
Rather than risk buying another stylus I made my own following these instructions. The response is better but not by much. Same story though.. the homemade stylus works perfectly on my phone. I wonder if all Nook Tablets have this issue. Might wander into a store and see how Skitch works on some others.
Just a quick update. I stopped by BN today and bought the official stylus. Pricey, but it works really well.

What official stylus? I couldn't find one on the bn site. I tried out one of the targis stylii at best buy and it worked well but the tip is too large for my tastes. I'll try the dagii tomorrow night.
I'm using a Bamboo brand stylus I bought at Best Buy in the iPad section. I picked it because it has a smaller tip than every other stylus I've seen so far. It's very fast and responsive with every app I've tried it out on except for Sketchbook. I don't know if it's because I'm used to drawing on a convertible tablet laptop with a hard stylus (using the PC version of Sketchbook) or with regular implements on paper. It's not bad, but I get better results using my fingers in Sketchbook on my nook Tablet. I do like the Bamboo stylus quite a bit, but if it worked better with that one program, I'd be so much happier with it.

What official stylus? I couldn't find one on the bn site. I tried out one of the targis stylii at best buy and it worked well but the tip is too large for my tastes. I'll try the dagii tomorrow night.

What official stylus indeed. I did the same thing which is why i walked into a store to ask. They sell a nook branded vara stylus. The box says it's "Made for NOOK 2nd Edition". It runs $20 or so but works way better than the other one I have. Jury is still out on whether it's better than my finger but it is good enough for me to not return the NT.
I was interested in trying out the nook branded Varga stylus since I got a bunch of B&N gift cards this Xmas. When I asked at one of my local stores tonight, I was told the stylus is not out in our area yet and not expected anytime soon. You can't buy it online either. What the heck?!
I've got a makeshift conductive foam stylus. I kept reading reviews of rubber tipped stylii that complained it was difficult to get it to register and drag it across the screen because they had to be pressed down to register but the friction at that pressure was a pain. I read a few complaints that claimed the NT was especially problematic with some stylus or another, that it would register on other devices but was iffy on the NT.
I had some foam from a previous PC build (the CPU shipped in it) that worked no problem. Cut off a piece, folded it, stuffed/screwed it into a small LED flashlight housing I'd emptied out as the pen body. It was a spur of the moment thing so I may find a better housing later, but I quite enjoy it even as is. Very responsive even with a light touch.

The keyboard case is about the only way I carry mine. I have a nice laptop that sees almost no use now. Great keyboard btw.

Thoughts on Keyboard Folio
The main problem for Android for me has been typing. I've spent hours getting used to swipe technology because I hate softkey keyboards, then came along this little keyboard folio.
At first I regretted buying it. I spent $90+ to get it, and as soon as it showed up I was unhappy. But then I started using it. The way that the tablet itself is not connected to the keyboard is a little bit awkward. You only can place the tablet at 3 viewing angles which vary by only a few degrees, rendering them almost useless. The folio case also takes up the full size USB slot, which was one of the best features of it imo. Also, the way it slides in and out of the slot does not seem like it would stand up against a lot of use.
That being said, getting this case literally redefined how I use my device. UX is now no longer a problem at all. The keys are individual, and spaced at a perfect distance so typing on it comes very naturally. Instead of a tablet, it seems like I have an android netbook now. I am a web designer/developer by trade. Using the tablet by itself is perfect for designing, the adobe touch apps are great, however I was never able to code due to the lack of a keyboard. This folio has changed that.
I recognize that half of my excitement over the folio is just the fact that I am using a keyboard with an android device, and that can be achieved simply by plugging in a regular USB keyboard into it, however after a little use, I rarely take the tablet out of the folio unless I am designing.
I like the keyboard. But I have in my bag and use it when I need heavy typing. Very impressed with the quality of it, there is some issues however, if you don't use the native english version. Then you'r at times stuck, with ENG layout, which can be rather annoying.
I find mine indespensible. If I'm not mistaken, it's the fastest for coding in Android from powerup to first keystroke, even on pokey stock ROM. The speed of getting hooked up with BT isn't something I like. The battery drain is a hassle for me, too. Granted, I use it mostly for typing rather useless stuff like this, but I really like it. It's a one-of-a-kind at the moment.
Yes, it's about 1.25 inches (33mm) thick, not counting the magnetic flap closure. The TPT in my Sikai case is 15/16 of an inch (23mm), but it doesn't seem like it thanks to its design. They could have worked a little harder on either the aesthetic or the actual depth. It's definitely not slick looking, but its a great workhorse. For criminy, it's Lenovo. What do you expect?
I think it's a transitional gadget, perhaps ahead of its time. They will get thinner. We will be jealous. We'll get the fourth gen and be smug for a month or two. But for now, we have the only one.
I just got my tablet yesterday, but so far I really like the keyboard folio. I do a lot of posting on various forums as well as document editing for clients. My only complaint with the folio is with the trackpoint. I was hoping it would be a traditional trackpoint. I find myself having to get used to rubbing my finger over the trackpoint instead of just pushing it in the direction I want the mouse to go. However as I use it more and more, I will get used to it.
In the realm of what I really want is a backlit keyboard. I would prefer if it was kind of like the Asus keyboard dock in that it offered additional battery life when in use. That beings said this is a rev 1 product and I am sure in the future things will improve. As it stands now I am about 90% satisfied with it the way it is.
Regarding the tablet in general I wasn't too sure about moving to a 10' device over my Nook tablet, but last night I read a book on it just fine when it was out of the folio, and difference in weight didn't bother me one bit. I love this thing.

I also bought the keyboard folio and it makes the TPT heavier and thicker. It would only fit(snug) on my 11 inch sleeve case.
I like to use the keyboard folio when I am replying to emails, but it drains the TPT battery faster so I always have it plugged in to a power source.
And the magnets are very strong (compass apks will be useless)
Function keys
Has anyone found a solution to using the Fx keys? (F1-F12) I need them to use some work apps in Citrix. Besides that this keyboard is awesome.
Great for travel
I use mine quite a bit for travel when I don't want to bring a laptop and a tablet. This gives me just enough laptop functionality on the go and tablet when I need it.
Bummer, I wish I'd seen this thread before I ordered my keyboard today. It was on sale on the Australian Lenovo site for AUD$60, reduced from $90 and freight was free. I have a 10" netbook which I have just upgraded with a Vertex SSD but I prefer not to cart it about everywhere with me as it needs to go in my motorcycle backpack. It seems like they will be about the same size in the end. Sigh..
I can't really complain though, I picked up the 16Gb ThinkPad on a 1 hour sale for AUD$249 so in the end it's a pretty cheap solution for an iPad killing android tab, especially now I've upgraded it to ICS which I much prefer over Honeycomb.
All I'm waiting now is for a rooting solution for ICS on this pad, that will be brilliant.
If anyone has one of these they want to sell, i'll take it for a good price.
Better than it just lying around ya?
I received mine. It's not too bad and protects my tab in my backpack.
I don't use it at home unless I am using a citrix client in a window where I am unable to use the native ICS keyboard.
