Bicycle Mount for the G1 - G1 Accessories

Any one have first hand experience with any of the handlebar mounts out there?
I have seen a few but I am not sure if they will keep my G1 from smacking the ground.

i Concur with the guy above

Effective...but kinda hard to get in and out of.
Need something so I can see the screen too.

not sure if this would work for you....
i use this for running and depending on where you strap it to your arm, you could technically see the screen riding a bike i would think.

Look up Herbert Richter, they make an incredible bike mount for any PDA phone, and they have a mounting plate specifically for the Dream.

It is actually quite good. Hard to get in the U.S. though. I had to find a company in U.K. that would ship to CONUS.

I too am looking for one, just got a bike.
Ordered a mount for my Garmin 60csx, but there are some AWESOME apps for the G1, and easier to use (auto upload to Google Maps, etc..) and I think I prefer the G1 more for this.
(Apps: My Tracks, Buddy Runner)
Looked up the Herbert Richter mount specific (Dream), looks like the mount is horizontal, which isn't good. You can't auto force an app to go landscape mode, and I don't think Cupcake update does auto rotation.
Actually n/m after viewing the 2 pieces, the phone will be vertical. Someone please verify.
Last edit, great, expansys.com says release date for the Dream mount is JUNE 09!!!

Sorry have not been around for a while. I bought the mount from a UK shop (GPSForLess or something like that) and they delivered inside a week. I got a car mount and the bike mount separately. The G1 attachment connects to the faceplate of the appropriate mount and once on it does not come off easily, I use a hammer to tap it off.
The bike mount goes onto the handlebar and does not rotate once mounted. I am pretty sure you can loosen up the joint while it is not mounted on a bike and swivel it to a new position but you would want to tighten it back up before putting it on a bike. The holder itself is functional enough. It is very similar to the seidio face in holster. I would not trust it for really rough riding such as mountain biking but for city riding it is more than solid enough. The counter point to that is if you are doing the kind of riding where you would be able to jar the phone out of the holster you will probably have a spill sooner or later, which would likely destroy the phone.

What apps are you using on your bike? I am sort of looking for a good reason to get a G1, so if there is something good for biking, my arguments will be bolstered.

MonkeyK: I use My Tracks on my bike trips. Pretty sweet app.
JanetPanic: That brings up another thing...The "clip" you put on your G1, can you use that for both the car mount and the bike mount? Is it a universal one if you get the Richter mount? I am looking for a car mount as well, Stream Furious is my best friend on my drives home from work.

Yes it is a universal mount. So you could remove the G1 clip from the bike mount and move it to the car mount. I would get a separate G1 adapter for the car and the bike mount though. I worry that continually attaching and removing the G1 cradle would weaken the attachment to the mounting system.
The G1 Vibration free tower works quite well for me as a car mount. I do not drive often though so the bike mount sees more use.

JanetPanic: do you have a link to the bike and car mount? I think I am sold on them.

There is also

but I was not too convinced on how well an arm would work on a bicycle.
Note if you want to wait a little while you should be able to pick it up on expansys for less than I paid. (~55 USD for the pair)

Best window mount?

Does anyone know of any cheap suction window mounts that are made to hold Hermes device (8525)?
Personally I would not recommend or risk using a cheap suction mount for a £400 device in case the quality sucks, and it dislodges from the glass and causes major damage to your device. Then the £15 you have saved from buying a quality mount pales into insignificance. I use a Brodit vent mount as these are a lot more secure, have you considered one of these?

The vents in my SCion xB are questionable at best, not sure I'd stick a vent mount on them. I used a suction window mount for my Genio PPC with a CF GPS for years and it never fell off the window.
Does your device not get real hot if you have the heat on in the winter?
My Hermes stays as normal because I just shut off that vent, similar to the one in the picture on the right

on topic, I grab most of my electronic doo-dads from www.eforcity.com
I use their universal suction cup mount. Hasn't failed me yet.
Ebay !!!
I got one from ebay.
First time i drove i had the window up cause i mounted it on the window side of the stearing wheel. But i had no issues with it at all. And it was like $25AU shipped.
I bought a Bracketron Mobile Grip-It Windshield Mount for Mobile Devices from best buy.. was $32 and I'm pretty happy with it. Like the manual says, it works best when resting on the dashboard, 14" arm is helpful with my far away windshield

thanks i been looking for one for when i got the gps running.
On really hot days my ebay bought mount falls off. :/
I had to put the bottom of the mount resting on my dash for it to not fall, i wouldn't recommend the ebay ones.
hmm, i havent had this problem at all, even though I expected it!
Its sometimes hard to get the suctioncup off the windshiled even AFTER the mechanical lever is released!
How close does yours look to the picture of the bracketron universal at bestbuy.com?
I've got the Best Buy one as well - seems to work fine. One thing I liked about it was that the rubber pads on the sides can be moved up or down the phone to avoid pushing the buttons on the sides when squeezing down on the phone (like the PTT button).
ive had pdas in my cars about 5 years now, and ive found even the expensive suction mounts arnt all that!
So i tend to find a suitable plastic holder, attach a bracket to the back, home made bit of bent metal, and fix it in behind a panel or vent to leave no marks in the dash!
Ive dont plenty of track days and the phones have been safe.

HOLY DASH MOUNT!! You are going to have to use street view instead of the windshield to see where you are. LOL I'm sure there will be better options soon
Hi,
I'm using one similar to that but mine's a vent mount and its pretty awesome i think. The reason I got one of these friction beasts is so that i can use it with my gps and phone. Yours seems to be better than the vent mount because it swivels. Mine doesn't swivel. But overall it works and its a very good multi tasker. I usually have it on landscape and don't use the little prongs. The foam pads are good enough to hold both my phone and gps.
I bought a cheap one from Frys for $15, it has a very similar clamping design but uses a flexible gooseneck and a suction mount. It works well, the friction mount part holds the phone well. I am not a huge fan of the gooseneck though. I cant wait to get back home and start modding on it, I think I can make it much better!

This type of mount actually blocks the charge port so you can't charge it while in the car. Kinda a deal killer because GPS uses so much power. Phone will be dead when I get to my destination.
I ordered one of those that said it had 3 clips instead of the 4 but they sent me one with 4. Then the ebay seller, lovelypriceelement, emailed me back saying that the 3 clips one doesn't exist EVEN THOUGH IT SAYS ON THE PAGE THAT THE USB PORT ISN'T BLOCKED!
Don't buy this if you want to charge in the car.

I wish I remember where i got mine. It took me 3 different ones before i found one i liked, bought them retail....just kept returning them until the 4th was the best (around $25). It has 2 clips that clip onto the vent, and a support arm between the clips that rests again the vent, doesnt move at all and the charge port is completely accessible.

If you could find out where you got that one, that would be great. Looking for a more elegant solution to mount my G1 in my car.
I've seen the vent mount one at Staples but I don't know if it would work in my car. How long are the arms that clip onto the vent. I have a Mazda 6 and my vents are like the one in the middle of this picture:

Gooseneck Floor Mounts for G-Tablet

The Mount Guys customer support says it will adequately support up to about 3 lbs.
I know that other companies make these types of gooseneck mounts. Is anyone using this one or one from another company and how happy are you with it. How stable are these mounts? Is there a lot of movement and shaking of the tablet when driving with the gooseneck mount?
I purchased the Mount Guys cupholder mount for the G-Tablet and it just isn't cutting it.
It's not stable enough to hold the G-tablet. The tablet moves back and forth with just the slightest touch. I think if you hit a big pothole the tablet could potentially be damaged. Also one of the plastic pieces that was glued came off. The glue just isn't strong enough for a tablet that weighs 1.8 lbs.
I just picked one up myself. I have a Camry and really saw it as my only mount option. I do like it. But it does move a lot as driving. I plan on going to ace hardware and picking up something like this and mount it to the console. It should keep it in place a bit more.
I gave up trying to mount this thing. The last one I put my tablet on flew backward on first acceleration.

Yeah, that's why I am not even going to bother with this for my daily driver.
It is a convertible roadster and I drive at 9/10 most of the time so the tablet would be on the floor a lot.
I have yet to have it fall out. but when I first put it together I put the head of the mount on upside down and it fell right off. I turned it around and it went in fine and I have had no issues with it.
I recieved this mount yesterday and installed it this morning for my drive to work. I installed the holder to be in the portrait mode. Of note I have a very stiff suspension, what would be considered uncomfortable to the majority of normal people.
The actual head held the tablet very well. I made sure it was tight, and am a little concerned becusae as tight as I made it there is a bit of flex in the plastic. Really cranking down on it though kept it secure in the vertical, except for one very large bump o nmy drive that caused the tablet to slide down about two inches in the holder. Once moved back up had no problems for the rest of the drive.
As mentioned above, with the length of the gooseneck this thing moves around a ton. So much that it is almost unusable right now. Again, very stiff suspension here, but I feel because of the length it wouldn't be stable in any car. I knew this going in since it was a single point mount, but was willing to give it a shot for the money.
I have to play with it a bit, but I think that I will be able to greatly improve the performance by doing something to tie it into the center console of my vehicle. Even just a piece of string from the mount to a solid point on the dash would help out a lot I think. The key is maintaining the functionality without making it look like a mess. Once I come up with something I will attach some pictures with results as well.
Of note, it worked great for navigation (Pre-loaded Google Maps via the cache for now) and my bluetooth OBD-II scanner as well.
Well, quick update, just moving the mount around a bit so that one corner was resting on the center console did wonders. It puts the tablet a bit low due to the stick shift, but it's a compromise for right now. I personally think it's the right price, I am not going to he working on this thing while driving, but the large display for navigation is excellent and with the current positioning it is right next to my hand and makes simple quick navigation easy while in the car.

Car Mount

Using this when I want to have G-Tab act as large GPS unit (or watch movies while driving):
It is a tad wobbly but seems secure enough with the bean bag holder.

No, I just got this mount in after two weeks in shipping and it does not fit properly. My G-Tab is just a bit wider than the maximum distance the mounts arms can be extended. A G-Tab can BARELY fit if you force the arms apart a bit wider but it is stressing the plastic a good bit. Plus, with the mount joining the mounting bracket being off center it stresses the stability of the assembly once mounted and the G-Tab bobbles noticeably on rough roads. I have mine mounted with the tab up as the suction cup is mounted to the console of my truck. My advice is to avoid this and spend your money elsewhere. I most likely will be getting a different mount simply because the tab is in the mount so tightly that it is inconvenient to get in and out of the mount. Also, the brackets interfere with the on-off switch of the Tab, as well as some of the buttons on the front of the Tab.

Are you sure we are talking about the same product ?
I have the mount and I can get my gtab in/out (even without removing it from its leather) without a problem.
The mount is advertised for the ipad (7.31" width) and can't see how it should not fit the gtab (10.5" wide).
Also the brackets (as can be seen in the OP) attaches to the gtab from bottom and top (midway) there shouldn't be any interference with the (left/right) sides (where the power button is location) or with the bezel edge (where the buttons are located).
The holder works for both gtab and much wider ipad, I highly suggest you contact buyincoins.com and make sure they send you the correct product.

Car Dock Arm Change?

Does anyone know if there is a compatible 'arm' that will work with the Car Dock? The one from Moto is too long and lowers the phone too much for where I want the phone to go. Looks like anything with the right size ball-socket joint would work, I just need need to find mounts that use that style. I'm tempted to just take a Dremel and epoxy to the arm included with the dock, but I'd like to have a spare before I did that.
Curious if you found anything?
I was able to use the arm from my father-in-law's old droid mount, but I have no idea where you would order such a thing.
Any Garmin Nuvi mount should work with the car dock.
I use my dock with a cheapo "i.Trek Garmin Nuvi Sticky Mount" and it works perfectly.
Where are you guys putting your docks that you need to change the arm?

I actually have mine mounted from one of the cup holders, just below the center console. I used a couple of hockey pucks, duct taped together, with the suction cup mounted to the top. It wedges perfectly in the cup holder, and holds the phone perfectly below the center console, right in front of the gear shift. The weight of the hockey pucks holds it pretty securely.
I also have a mount for my bike that I got from my father-in-law. It's the exact same size as the ball-mount thing on the car dock.
