Utility Software For the Shift - Shift Accessories

Hi, I have been using my shift for a week or so now and I have found the 1GB memory to be an issue with lagging screen switches in W7.
One solution I found was to install this free utility called "Minimem" (found here: http://minimem.kerkia.net/Download.aspx)
So far it is working great and my windows (in W7 RC) switch faster, and I can have a few program running.
It's easy to figure out, just install it, started up all your programs, open 'Minimem', then choose all the programs you want managed, choose how often you want to run Minimem in seconds, and what Memory threshold should be exceeded before it takes any action on those programs.
Mid-day update:
I forgot about this, but to stop unnecessary things from opening in Win7, there is another great free utility here: (http://www.anvir.com/task-manager-windows-startup.htm) called "AnVir Task Manager Free"
It lets you choose what to start on start up, plus lets you do a delayed startup of select programs (like Messenger, or other non essential programs on startup)
And I've confirmed that the beta version of Stardock Fences (http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/) works well (very handy for this screen)
I hope this helps those wanting to speed up W7 even more!
If anyone else knows of other great free utilities I would love to know!

thanks for all your great posts, I like the Fences very much.
As for the RAM optimization, I'm using MemTurbo (not a Freeware) and it's working great. I'll try later your suggested app.

Maximize Your Shift
I'm a business user of the Shift, that's why I bought it. I needed mobility, practicality, and ultimate portability. Here are some things I have been researching on how to make the most of your shift.
While the developers are working hard at expanding the features of WiFi/SD/BT, here are some cool tricks for your Shift in the meantime:
First, signup for a Windows Live account, if you don't already have one.
SYNC
Get "Windows Live Sync" - It's AWESOME!
Why Email when you can Sync Live?
I hate email, its useless, and outdated. I like live communications.
(I'm always on wifi, and my 3G is there when needed, so this tool is great for file syncing. I have my PC at work that hibernates, and mini PC that acts as a file server that is on 24/7. Then I have my shift. I simply set up the folders I want to sync and this beauty does it all perfectly in the background. ...If you are on a pay as you go data plan, I would suggest setting specific folders in SYNC to "Manual vs. Automatic" to save money or creating a side folder to move things between) ...what really makes this great, is that you can sync files between anyone else with a Windows Live account. (I'm a mobile professional, and this is great for my team to send me docs. They simply save it to a folder, and seconds later I get it!
ONLINE STORAGE
Windows SKY Drive (25 GB of online storage!)
Anywhere access-Get to your online files from home, work, or on the road.
Easy to use-Password-protected-Keep your files to yourself, or share them with anyone you want.
Drag files into your online folders, just like on your PC.
(Who knows, maybe one day it might even be possible for developers to post and manage their ROM updates this way!)
Mid-Day Update:
Okay, this is just Really, really cool!
Gladinet.com lets you link your PC up to all those great online storages you have kicking around! Windows SkyDrive - Google Picasa - Google Docs - Amazon Storage, and a few others, plus some custom settings for obscure locations.
This means you can use your online drive as a drive letter on your Shift!
More to Come!

Well don´t know if its a "new" utility for you guys, but for me it is and works quite fine...
It´s Virtual Clone Drive, a freeware that can be downloaded from http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html
It helped me install WIn 7 on my Shift and for now, has eliminated my need for an external CD/DVD drive

Software that works on the Lobby.

Hi,
Perhaps it's not my place (Being a newbie )but thought this forum could do with a dedicated thread for comments regarding what software works on the Monet/Lobby and how to load it in.
What software is crap and what software is spectacular.
And where to get it and is it FREE!
I'm sure that I and others will visit frequently for the latest views & opinions.
Just for starters here are some truly FREE ringtones.
Just need to give 'A' email address. Dont bother with Email just download and use 'back-Arrow' to get them all.
Enjoy.
https://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/domore/ringtones.mspx
My 'must have' apps
1. Sprite Backup Personal Edition (Version 5.2.0) - very handy for backup and restore of your Lobby. You can create self-extracting restore 'exe' files on your micro-SD card 'just in case'.
2. Tom Tom Mobile (Version 5.200 (4450)) - brilliant Sat Nav.
3. Automatic Keylock (v3.87) by Danny Baumann. The normal Windows keylock (pressing the Red Hang Up button) doesn't work that good for me. When someone calls you, I had the nasty habit of answering the call before I could see who it was, or even cutting many people off when taking the phone out of my pocket. This app gives you a screensaver that locks the keypad down a little better.
4. RealDice Mutliplayer Championship Poker (Version 4.24). Like playing Texas Hold'em? Why not play against other people over GPRS internet connection? I love this game. Even the AI in the single player is very good. The running costs (in terms of KB playing over the WAP/GPRS) isn't, surprisingly, that much.
5. Avantgo - Sync up all the latest news for your long commute to work.
6. Resco Smartpack - contains System Toys (battery / memory status), Photo Viewer, a more powerful Explorer application and a registry editor. I know that you can get some of these for free, but this pack is trouble free and very well written.
7. TCPMP (aka BetaPlayer) - One big drawback for me is that Windows Media Player doesn't allow you to easily Fast Foward through your movies or music when you are playing them. TCPMP can do this plus it is a fab media player, and there are many other codecs available to play non-Windows files too.
8. CellDoom - If you are as old as me and remember playing Doom on your old 386 then get yourself CellDoom. Dig out your old Doom WAD files and drain your battery playing this
9. Jeyo Mobile Extender for Outlook (Windows Mobile Edition 2.5 (Build: 1258)) - Wish you could text as fast as the Young Guns? If you've got Outlook and a Smartphone then get this. Jeyo Mobile Extender for Outlook allows you to send SMS from your PC (via ActiveSync / USB connection). It will sync up all your Sent, Received and draft texts (SMS messages) on your Outlook too. Excellent for quick, long and multiple recepient messages.
10. Breaksoft Mobile Registry Editor. A PC based application that allows even easier registry access to your Smartphone.
Some of the above applications are free, others you will need to purchase. All can be found via Google
Only the "Automatic Keylock (v3.87) by Danny Baumann" requires the Lobby to be unlocked.
Excellent start to this list ringp3ace.
will def be trying some of these out.
you didn't mention whether or not Lobby needs to be unlocked first though.

HTC S740 many Question!

Hello Friends,
Yesterday i got my NEW HTC S740 smartphone! I have to say that i'm really newbie to smartphones but i love this phone!!
I found all the features of the phone and i have to say that i'm very pleased with it! My problem is that i can't - fear to connect the phone to my computer!!
When i insert the cd of HTC in my computer it asks me to download Flash player. I download flash player and then i install it on my computer but i still can't open the cd!! Also i have installed Active Sync 4.5 on my pc! What i wanna ask is, can i connect the S740 on my pc with only Active Sync 4.5 or i have to install the program of HTC (the one i can't find because i don't have flash player)?? How can i fix the problem with flash player?
thanks in advance
My Activesync has probs with Vista
Not sure if this helps but from memory my activesync didnt work with vista and I needed some other syncing software for vista. I found it pretty easy so do a google search on syncing problems here.
I now sync my TYTN2 to my iMac and it works great as the iTunes all come across with no probs.
Enjoy
My friend i have XP! What about the problem with flash player? Why i can't read the cd?
In fact, if you've installed ActiveSync, you don't need anything else from the CD (maybe except User's Guide from the second disk). It contains (packed in Flash animations) just sync programs and few links. Anyway, if so curious, try to explore the CD and run start.exe directly from there...
Working ActiveSync should sit (greyed) now in the System Tray on the right side of the XP's bottom Taskbar. Right click over the icon and choose Connection Settigs... On following dialog first check the box Allow USB Connection.
When you'll connect your Rose to the machine now, it will start working without hassles. If any problems, first check the manual and if lost anyway, let us know again.
Ok i will try to connect with Active Sync!
WOW it worked!! thank you my friend!! Does the cd contain anything else useful?
Not really... Just links to WM 6.1 Home on Microsoft... Have a look there on TotalAccess, they're some freebies avalable.
On little trick for other places - open the connection dialog (as above) again and have a look, if the last box (Allow wireles...) is UNchecked. If so, hanged on USB your Rose will connect to internet trougth PC - it's faster and 100% "free".
And have a look on your built-in mobile favourites on Rose - you'll find a HTC page with few links. One little warning - you'll find there a link to Adobe FlashLiite, which does not work on Rose... Good tip is to check Google Maps application and maybe SkyFire (alternate browser with YouTube support).
As Pocket Internet Explorer tends to ignore WiFi connection, alternate browser is good to have anyway. Another, very solid option is Opera Mini. Just be aware - it's Java application. After installation you'll find it in Java console (it's in Accessories folder).
Enjoy!
thank you me friend for giving me these useful tips! It's really helpfull and will help me understand better my smartphone!!
P.S. How can i see youtube and generally streaming videos on my S740? I visited youtube but i couldn't watch videos!!
Until Adobe will understand, that WM 6.1 Standard has no limitations in that (the FlashLite just denies to install), as far as I know, the only way I see is the SkyFire browser as mentioned above. Just read Privacy statement on their site first, you'd probably not like info they're collecting...
Oh ok! And something last...
I want to buy an extra card because i need more space! What kind of card does it take?? Micro sd or Mini sd?? Confusing!
Micro. Don't be confused, on commercial photos they look the same, because usually sold with adapter in Mini size (micro is then just delivered inserted in the adapter).
Crossfingers with inserting card into the slot as this is only thing which drove me insane on early beginning...
Therefore I would recommend you the largest possible card to avoid a need to change it. As Rose supports the latest standards of SD Cards, you can use any size up to 32GB. Speed of the card isn't really critical - major snail in file operations is Windows Mobile file system. But this is area of little wizardry, because it depends on size, brand etc. With hight probability the most critical operation from this POV is video capturing by built-in camera.
So my recommendation is - don't spend money for useless speed, prefere size (otherwise you'll after few changes of cards in the slot throw Rose against the wall ;-) ). And if possible, just for sure, try to record some video on the card in highest size first directly in the shop and you'll see...
So, what i need is a Micro Sd card 32GB? Right?
Yeap. First word of my previous post...
Obviously, smaller sizes works as well and some (1-2 gigs) are today sold for nothing...
Maybe it's time to open 2nd CD with the manual (promise - no flash, just PDF file). I understand first confusions if somebody meets first Windows Mobile phone and enthusiasm (especially in combination WM + Rose ;-) ) should be supported.
Nevertheless in this stage manual would be faster than me (leaving for single malt "dinner" with friends ).
Ok my friend. Thank you for all your help! I will open the manual!!

First Impressions / How to make WP7 Perfect (perhaps)

I hope no-one minds but I got my Mozart yesterday and the only link that seems to talk about what is good and bad about it (here) hasn't had a new entry since November.
I also reckon that the Microsoft Developers know that xda-developers is the only place to go for sensible smartphone discussions and hopefully they will read this and make some changes.
I wasn't convinced that the Mozart would be better than my HD2 but actually....
Good:
Great Screen Resolution
Fast
Internet Explorer is better than I expected and the Pinch to Zoom is great
I like the start screen and the way the 3G signal gets out of the way
Bad:
No Comm Manager - switching on WiFi, Bluetooth, Flight Mode is a real pain
No Internet Sharing - AARRRRGGGHH!
Can't find my WiFi with hidden ESSID - GGGRRRRR!
No MyPhone Sync
I'm not sure I'm keen on the lock-down on apps - it's probably the only thing that will force me to Open Source Android.
I used gyrator2 to switch the screen off when I turned the HD2 vertically down - it saved on battery.
Thank goodness MS don't seem to have made WP7 into a steppingstone to a proper OS (like vista was to Win7!). The way I'm using it, it's the almost finished.
I'm hoping that someone will come up with a Comm Manager App. But I don't know about the other stuff.
Has anyone else got anything to add? What would make WP7 work better for you?
PS Please move this if it's duplicated elsewhere.
Thanks for the heads-up, just brought a Mozart today expecting delivery on Tuesday, I've come from the Android phones Galaxy S & X10 Mini, will be interesting to see how this shapes up against them.
anoyances
i also bought one and generally i think they realy solved the job doing a MS based phone that works. (i moved from a diamond2 with os6.5)
but what realy makes me angry is that i read in the commcersials and specs that i could use mp3 for ringtones (wich phones cant today anyway). but even if being a trivial requerent i would not go with out it.
now i realize that i can use mp3 - BUT ONLY IF I BUY IT FROM ZUNE WTF!!!!!
are they trying out the apple business plan?
im aware that i can "jail break" (where did i last hear about this.. og iPhone/apple) .. but i risk brick´ing my phone and thats a bummer.
still realy nice phone.
a file handler would be nice though and some grouping functionality. the start screeen cannot collect all your messaging and mail in a single icon for access. you have to add evry single one of them in the shortcut list for ease of access.. thats anoying if you have 4 mail and text messaging like me.. grouping would rock..
another thing is "People" its a looker if you want to see contratct and facebook updates, byt anoying for phone contact list
and whats it with the contact list? you cannot sync with outlook only exchange serveres. otherwise you have to expose your full contact list on windows live or facebook to get it synced to your phone.
now i believe i should be paid for using my phone then.. they get to know me and all of my friends including phone info, full name, job detaisl address etc etc. thats something that valueable.. and i dont get to choose if i want to take part.. i want money Zune/HTC and Microsoft!
im semi pleased .. nice phone but realy creapy business methods
A week later....an update
I can see what you're saying js0937.
I'm not really into changing the ringtone but I did notice that you couldn't do it. I can't believe that it has to come from Zune - it does make Android seem very attractive!
I've coped with the Outlook / Live syncing by having a separate account for my contacts but it is a bit long-winded.
I'm waiting for the update (due in Jan 2011 but when??? we're already two-thirds through!) to see whether these problems get solved.
Given that I worked with winphone 6.5 for so long, winphone7 is still much, much better but I still want Internet Sharing and a Comm Manager

Update whill be soon (7 feb.?)
h..p://microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/features/update-info.aspx
Hoping the update sorts the voice dialing out as its rubbish compaired to 6.5. This is a big step back. Be nice to get more info of what the update will bring. Roll on the 7th, fingers crossed.
My 2 cents
Ye, here you have the list:
MUSTS (otherwise I will NOT use the phone for my business):
- Network sharing
- People view by company OR search by company
- copy paste OR use selected text as signature
- outlook categories (seriously!) sort/show calendar, ppl, by category
- tasks list
WANTS (It would be nice to have it):
- activesync with desktop (mailny notes, and such)
- messaging hub (it is enough to group it together in one tile displaying summary of all unread messages, no matter from where they come. It can link to selection screen, where I can pick the mail/messaging account).
- connect tasks with SharePoint lists
- see Active Directory coleagues callendars (or at least simple meeting assistant that shows free/busy for attendees)
- Remote Desktop Connection (it is a pity that having that screen I cannot connect to my virtual desktop if needed)
I am business guy, and always used WinMo as a nice tool. Now... I have waited so long for WP7 and I cant use it for work. I gave it to my Woman, and now I am considering other OSes...
Microsoft, you are pissing on your most loyal customer segment!

2 qns please - Dropbox and Apps

So then:
New to the Prime, like it so far, not in love with it, but it's pretty good.
2 qns please:
a) I have a desire HD and like the apps you can put on the screen under ICS, but don't know how to do it on this one, e.g. a twitter feed etc. Is it possible to do? It is a right click and hold down on my phone!
b) I have dropbox and was hoping there was some way of syncing files from my computer to a part of my SD card - just work files, so I can leave my work laptop and move onto this. Is there a sensible solution to this?
Am hoping both of these are solvable, please put me out of my misery!
Thanks
A) Ice Cream Sandwich changed the way you add widgets to your homescreens. Instead of long-pressing on the home screen, they're in their own section in the app list. Bring up the app list and you'll see a section for widgets at the top that you can scroll through.
Are you asking if dropbox works? Yes it does.
B) put your files in dropbox.... done works perfect
if you favorite something on your TFP's dropbox app, it has it always downloaded. Not sure how often or if at all it downloads the latest version, but that's waht the features says it does. Also, if you won't have internet, tap an item once to download it to your dropbox cache and after that it'll be saved on your prime so you wont need internet to access those specific files from your device.
ps i'm rocking the same TFP/DHD combo and i'm loving it
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
I have dropbox working (the app), but am wondering if there's a "deeper" setting more akin to the PC where I can sync and monitor folders rather than be able to passively log in and select which file I want to download/view?
I work in education and as such have about 5 gig of work files I could do with on my computer, mainly lesson plans, resources etc. The original idea is that I sync my (non asus transformer) laptop with my computer at home so any files I have automatically are the latest version; e.g. a lesson plan I update during every lesson, so when I am home I can carry on working on it, as it has downloaded the latest version automatically.
Then in my head I would extend this to include my transformer prime, where it stores the latest version of a lot of files and updates with dropbox so I can use my prime as my primary laptop for work use...
I hope that clarifies it a little?
and thanks to everyone who has taken the time to post - it's very kind of you.

As nhshah said, if you favorite something, it will stay synced to the most recent updated version. The only thing I can not find an answer for is if it automatically updates the file to your computer also.
I get what you are looking for, basically she wants dropbox to run as if her TFP was a desktop/laptop computer where it automatically syncs as the file is updated. Unfortunately, dropbox has limited the due to saving data and battery.
600 MB additional free storage
Hi all
Just found a smart way to increase your Dropbox account with 600 MB:
1 Sign into your existing Dropbox account (or create a new account)
2 Goto https://www.dropbox.com/free
3 Follow instructions ... and voila 600 MB additional free storage
Old news.. you can pretty much do this stuff from within Dropbox web interface to increase storage space. It not new offers.
Also as much as I love DB some of those items are pretty invasive as you give them certain control if your account to post stuff as they want on your behalf... pass

Apps and syncing

I've copied out my.local share folder and can see the program databases IE I want to rsync the database files for the program memories to use as a journal
Ive run Ubuntu touch apps on Ubuntu desktop question is can I apt get memories and run it on my desktop or would I have to install it on emulator and sync and run my apps from that ?
Sent from my awesome Ubuntu Touch device using the Forum Browser app
You can copy the databases to the same path on your desktop as they were on the phone. The apps should be able to find them then. However, that won't automatically sync them again if they change later.

ive done it i got the memories app running on my laptop and copied in the database
it puts it in the same place so i made a entry and copied it back and it works fine
although on the mobile pictures dont insert but on the laptop they do but dont show when i put back to the phone
im more interested in using it as a syncing journal like i do daily with lifeograph, again i just use text in this..
so im going to set ssh keys for now and just use scp to push and pull the files till i find a better way for automatic sync maybe rsync or something i see that its available on the phone
im probably setup a rsync server on my main server computer and sync my laptop up and phone (and tablet later) by making a simple bash script that specifies directories
as so far the whole .lcal share directory is 500 meg so better selecting what i want to sync
im thinkinking
memories
tasks
edit (this holds its notes in the local share)
music - i can specify a music directory to sync maybe
other items maybe handy would be calendar but not sure if notifications show up on the laptop yet ill have to run the app and test adding a date with reminder
but happy enough to get my journal sycning to start with
three apps syncing
ive got three apps syncing nicely
i have memories, notes and tasks syncing and probably can sync anything i like now i have the apps running on all devices
it seems a shame they dropped ubuntu one
is there any other better ways anybody could think of as apposed to manual ssh sync scripts
i have one to send and one to receive
im thinking rsync ...
something like drop box or google drive sync mechanism would be good also that would detect file changes and update the latest version automatically?
any thoughts is grateful
im know its early days and can imagine these being added in a way of a app??...

Sadly, that won't work, at least if you want to be able to install the app from the store.
Apps are run confined on Ubuntu for phones, which means that they can only read and write to their own subdirectories in ~/.local/share. They cannot access anything else.
If you want it to run unconfined, it probably won't be included in the store.
Therefore, the best place to implement that is probably in the OS itself.
